If you haven't done so already, introduce yourself to the group - who you are, where you are, what you do, and what is your "why?" Tag a friend to join us! #IDedchat
I am Janet Avery, Curriculum Director in Jerome, and your moderator this evening. My "why" for being an educator is to empower others to become the best versions of themselves! #IDedchat
Be sure to introduce yourself even if you are lurking so we know you are "listening." You might even try to stretch yourself and join us. :-) #IDedchat
OK - before we get into our Qs tonight, we are going to address the elephant in the room...Teacher Pay. Our goal tonight is to focus on things we can control when it come to teacher recruitment and retention... #IDedchat
A1 A sense of camaraderie and positive affirmations from people they trust that they are doing good work, despite and limitations or flaws they may see. #idedchat
Whether it is support from fellow teachers, administrators, or even students. Support could be simple as effective feedback and words of encouragement. Or it can be the ability to try out new things and being encouraged. #idedchat
A1: New teachers need a lot of feedback and positive affirmation for what they are doing in their classrooms. Celebrating successes, no matter how small. #IDedchat
A1: When teachers feel valued both for their opinions and their uniqueness, they have a sense of belonging. This will be different for each teacher. #IDedchat
R1: ALL stakeholders are listened to, Ts, Ss, Ps, admins, custodians, lunch room help, coaches, sponsors of clubs, members of the community. Nobody is bigger or smaller than anyone else. #idedchat
We have a new principal and she is very open to suggestions for change - she listens and has even let us implement a few ideas that our team had. #IDedchat
Some teachers personal devices are far superior to what is in the classroom...and Ts are comfortable with it. Also, ELA standards can be taught with History, Science, etc...but we all know that, don't tell me it has to be just in a story...#IDedchat
Q3: In Quaglia's Teacher Voice research, he talks about having Heroes.... What does that mean - why do we each need teacher heroes among our colleagues? #IDedchat
R2: honesty is important also. Sometimes things can’t happen, but if there is genuine respect for something that can’t happen, it goes a long way. #idedchat
A2: I fill I support administrators by making the most out of the resources I have access to and they support me by trusting professional judgement in utilizing, seeking, and creating new resources.#IDedchat
Hearing stories from other new teachers about their struggles and connecting through shared frustrations/experience made a huge difference for me starting out. #IDedchat
A3: We need to say to ourselves, "I want that to be me..." gives us something to try and work for and it will help Ts be better and Ss to gain from it. #IDedchat
A2: should there be a trust factor? Admin has a vision and hires those that can help build and support that. If that happens then it will be As supporting Ts and vice versa #idedchat#edtopia
R3: it gives us someone to look up to, voice concerns, bounce ideas off of, vent. I feel like I have this with several people at @LCHSBears. Some are in my dept, some are admins, and some are people who are just stakeholders. #idedchat
A3: teacher burnout is a reality we deal with. T need to find the hero’s in their school that builds them up and helps them through the difficult days/years. Everyone needs a hero- T and Ss #IDedchat
A3) We need hero's to help guide us to that next level. Like a mentor but much less formal. Find someone that you "steal" ideas from. Fill your toolbox with their ideas to help create your own. #IDedchat
A3: we all need someone to turn to. Classroom centered Ts are so 80s. Find exemplars, just as we try to get our Ss to do. Find a champion of the cause. It’s always ok to grab someone else’s cape, as long as eventually you fly on your own. #idedchat
A3: For better or worse, I’d argue that all teachers have to be heroes in our country today, especially with the implicit understanding that they’re willing to lay their lives on the line. #IDedchat
A4: Admin can show value by showing their support, constructive advice, and allowing Ts to ask "Why" with an answer that doesn't make us feel like we're simply an employee. #IDedchat
A4 Don't bring up money. I don't need a reminder of my pay, etc. Tell me what the solution is or what has been tried and come up short. Their EFFORTS are what I value. #idedchat
R4: clear and consistent expectations, support when needed, criticism when needed, feedback that shows how I can improve, “Good Job” and “Thank You!” #idedchat
A4) @melanie_korach has this great idea about #StarfishClub and how administrators and school boards should do more to recognize teachers. Most ppl want to be acknowledged for their hard work. Appericate your staff, cheaper than having to hire new ones.
#IDedchat
A4: Allowing for T to make professional decisions and trusting that they have the S best interest in mind. Often times T feel like the have to conform and are unable to be themselves. #IDedchat
A4: Admin can show support by supporting in failures and successes. New Ts get frustrated always hearing what they need to be doing better. Let the positives be louder than the negatives. #IDedchat
A4: I feel most supported by administration when they come along side as a coach and colleague. Truth is I love talking shop and so when they engage me in conversation about education, I feel energized. #IDedchat
I was an admin for 10 years and went back to the classroom. I’ve been back in the classroom for 4 years. I would be a totally different admin today versus then based on my teaching experience now versus 15 yrs ago. #idedchat
A3: Admin needs to remember for every “grow” (critical feedback) they should give a “glow” (something you’ve done well) we do it for our students...teachers need it too! #IDedchat
Q5: Quaglia talks about the importance of "fun and excitement" and a "spirit of adventure" being important in Teacher Voice (retention) How can we (or admin) help foster this in a school/district? #IDedchat
#IDedchat Yes and professionals will realize this is part of their job. I hate when I hear teachers refer to administration as the dark side. We can all have more mutual respect for each other.
Love this! Seeing ed from a different angle is imperative! I’ve now seen the sausage being made and have a totally new appreciation for so much more, from the top to the bottom! #IDedChat
A5: Our admin keeps it fun and exciting when they give words of encouragement, bring us food, and provide feedback to help us become better educators. #idedchat
A5: Plan for team building opportunities within a building. It doesn't always have to be boring. Make PD fun!--then you're getting fun in while still learning.#IDedchat
I had a place of employment once where I was expected to let someone know where I was 24/7. It was several years of time I wish I would have made a change. Hence I am back in the classroom, in a setting where I feel valued, and I can mold Ss of all levels. #IDedchat
An amazing leader used to come into my room & say “tell me what you think about...” then come back the next week & say “I was thinking about what you said & I wonder...”. I read, listened, & learned more from that interaction than years of grad school:) #IDedchat
A6: Flip the Staff Meetings...Record the "nuts and bolts" that need to be said, then allow the rest of the time for T collaboration led by Teachers. #IDedchat
A5: When I was a principal, one of my aims was to make sure every teacher in my building woke up each morning excited about coming to work. I was always asking myself how I could accomplish this via my messaging, meetings, PDs… everything I did! #IDedchat
R6: leadership takes many shapes. It isn’t always the vocal person heading a committee who is a leader. Great admins find opportunities for all to be #sevantleaders to lead in their own way. Finding tasks for all that help move the needle in the positive direction. #IDedchat
A6) I had an administrator that set up a once monthly mentoring session for those that wanted to learn more and maybe become admin at some point. One hour a month. If someone has an idea, let them explore it. #IDedchat
YES! @gcouros and @casas_jimmy and I am sure a few others have talked about building a culture where everyone is breaking down doors to get IN instead of running OUT. #IDedchat
R6: a really good admin delegates activities to all. It builds trust. Again, not just busy work but something that truly helps build the school. #IDedchat
A7: Don't be negative when talking about education, don't discourage them from becoming teachers..encourage them to. Let them in classrooms to see how awesome being a teacher is #IDedchat
A7: Make Teaching Fun Again ... Stop with the meaningless tests, prison rules, and silent classrooms. Time to have some fun and allow teachers to be creative and lead the students. #IDedchat
A6. Use transactional leadership to slowly build trust. Then identify and develop their leadership strengths. Put them in a position to succeed BY LISTENING FIRST. #IDedchat
A7: Be positive with each other. When you need a "thinking partner" to work through a problem, find solutions. Help each other think outside the box - be an encourager. #IDedchat
A7: Be the hero in your school. Be the positive force the pushes T and S to be their best. And surround yourself with great people @_datagirl@goodn3rd#IDedchat
R7: what career has the chance to shape the future, to encourage the next Ss to become drs, lawyers, entrepreneurs, innovators, accountants, gov officials (it has to get better, right?). It isn’t a job, it’s an adventure. #IDedchat
But more than listen. Use the information you gain as an insight into the needs and motivations of those you work with. Knowing the people means you can lead the people. #IDedchat
