thank you I'm excited to be a part of tonight!
Great to see you again Lori! Always great insight
A1: seeing the graphic I LOVE how empathy is out front. Must understand each classroom's unique challenges before taking action
A1 Surplus of forward thinking ideas generated and less "no, that won't work" - optimism, hope, teamwork, meets
A1: The ability to see an, "organic" creative process, approach is similar to
I was there last month - thanks to and
A1 Less wasted time if outcomes & expectations are clearly defined. Haven't seen this implemented outside of KSU. It'd be great!
The Regular - thanks for being here
A1: Too often students aren't given the chance to understand why we're exploring something. Building empathy builds understanding
Alisa Program Coordinator, Glad to be here!
Thanks for helping our tonight Summer
Absolutely! It starts, ends, and is wrapped in empathy!
Hi all! I'm Akilah Ellison Professional Learning Specialist, VA. I'm just leaving another chat...sorry for being late!
A1 Deeper perspectives from users
How are your finals? Are you done or do you have to go tomorrow?
Did they bust a specific myth? Or just hang out and record? meets
Exactly how I've implemented Wright State's Comp essays--all about empathy.
A1: DT-ing strengthens relationships and deepens understanding through empathy work (w/team and end-user)
A1: DT slowly removes the "I Failed I'm done" and replaces it with "That didn't work - what's next?"
Love the notion of - reminds me to say yes and then find a way!
Best of luck with all of it!
A1: the learning process becomes cyclical. There is opportunity built in and understood for trial/error and redevelopment
In my head, I imagined only Ts. Using w/Ss makes sense, too.
Thanks for being here again Dennis!
Listening and learning tonight from fantastic educators and admin
A1: translating prototype into lesson design with built in flexibility for Ss to revise/reflect & try out their thinking
A1: A very deliberate, focused approach to facing challenges & problem-solving.
indeed. I think too often people forget that empathy before designing approaches to solve issues
Love it - talk about a true growth mindset framework!
Thanks for jumping in Abbie! Should be great PD for you
A1: Benefit-using empathy to learn solutions. Ss having a voice in school decision i.e.handbook https://t.co/Pb9los1qmF
A1: DT encourages taking chances, making mistakes, trying again, making it better, trying again....
Yes and helps Ss find value in failures
Thanks for being here Miss Wallace!
Wow! You have students help in the handbook design?
Glad you can join us! Welcome!
A1: DT also helps Ss and Ts keep an action oriented mindset. Ideate, prototype, feedback resulting in solutions.
A1: Reflection....empathy...improvement
Great tools for teaching and learning practices!
Chris, thanks for being here from the
A1: I googled this.Had no clue. ❤️what I'm seeing & can't wait to learn more! Ideate is my new fav word! https://t.co/9zBmkG01I0
A1 This allows everyone in the educational process to understand the expectations and all the factors in the learning process.
Absolutely! It's a process!
Absolutely. Tt voice is strong, too, with using Design Thinking to design learning environment https://t.co/CPbKqmpD2I
A1: Benefit-using empathy to learn solutions. Ss having a voice in school decision i.e.handbook https://t.co/Pb9los1qmF
A1: #1 they are a team! #2 they are systematically thinking together through a specified process
Thanks for joining from South Dakota! What an amazing state!
A1: Your average curriculum loading scares teachers away from the time it takes for exploration (sadly). Need courageous tchrs.
Jaime; thinking the same thing! I could use more background on Q1
We have 4 students that bring voice to the policy. Staff weigh in-Ss weigh in. Very interesting process
YES! Great to see you here, Kate!
Good to see you again Danielle
Glad to live in a city where a stadium is named after you
A1: I find working and collabing with others is a great way to focus on the pros and cons and improve issues
My instructional design class at KSU talked about it, but I'd never tried in "on the ground." Can't wait to hear more.
Great to see you Sierra! Great insight as always
A1 Implementing DT allows teams to be strategic with their creativity, it provides enough structure to allow the juices to flow!
Jaime - I love the concepts and learning/using design thinking to move teams!
Students can go deeper in their learning - but that takes time. Will tchrs understand pacing required for that? Dunno.
A1 benefits include: team cohesion; individual empowerment; shared commitment to identified solutions
Sorry...missed Q1...can I get a retweet of it?
A1: It is purposeful and intentional to focus on student learning. Cyclical and ongoing-an integral part of culture.
Thanks for being here Ray!
Probably not at first. Too much emphasis on "test data."
Phil, great place to grow! Thanks for joining!
The point of intentional is key - the strategies are necessary to move forward.
Wow! This moves fast. Glad I'm on Tweetchat to handle the flow. Great stuff.
Ashley, thanks for joining tonight! We love SC
Hi, ! Joining in a bit late. Grad student , joining in for my class.
this is an amazing midcap to the week
Hopefully, we are just getting warmed up!
***Q2 is coming up in one minute!
Thanks! I'm learning with the best for sure!
Reuben, great to get your knowledge again!
Thanks for being here, Keira!
Well, I'm learning about DT tonight. Won't hear much from me.
We are a data driven country. i started with PBL in math 8 years ago. Now facilitate training for PBL. New to DT.
A1: How come I've never heard of this?? I can see so many students gaining from this! Excited to learn more tonight
A brilliant summation https://t.co/dPdI8VGjtY
A1 This allows everyone in the educational process to understand the expectations and all the factors in the learning process.
great, simple article. Thanks for sharing!
A1: Strangely enough I see this as being very similar to the Ohio improvement process....
Bubba, thanks for joining
yes sir! Implementation is the key!
Business sector uses this - it is time for us to use it in our work!
Q1: Design Thinking provides groups with structures and protocols for achieving something powerful together.
A1: Ss have a large role. Ss having a voice is essential to developing a class routine and curriculum. Sorry for being late!
Hi , I am also from . Hello.
I think that's important to understand. It isn't new but it IS new to education. Especially with students using it.
Nothing wrong with data. I wish it was less time consuming to collect & understand its meaning.
Hi, Ricardo - thanks for being here!
A1 benefits include a focus to ensure Ss receive engaging instruction as well as an opportunity to be authentically assessed
A1: We need to be teaching students so why not model it with teachers and administrators.
You're very welcome! It helped when I first started using Design Thinking last summer!
big learning curve for me at 1st, but once started teaching Ss to use to learn vowed never to go back!
Excited to see with to learn about design thinking approach. Just learning about it and ready to know more
Joining a bit late. Chuck Banks, HS AP from Gahanna, Oh
I incorporate tools in my meetings with staff and explain how and why I use them - hoping it will be replicated
A1: I've tried design thinking in English 9 the past 2 years...it's scary to give extended time & room for ideation but rewarding!
Wow, feel we've lapsed by not telling group more about DT earlier. Surprised me. Good call
thank you! The learning never stops😜
A1 W/o understanding the needs & motivations of an audience, a product will inherently fail. (how I feel about OTES and lawmakers)
A2: Empathy is at the heart of DT. It allows us the POV of the user in order to best meet their needs
A2: without empathy in design we discard the human aspect of leadership and motivation. Relationships move mountains not data!
A2: we need to look at all ways that our Ss will see something. Narrowing our design narrows a S's growth mindset. Look at all Ss.
Great perspective! https://t.co/znQr7GyZwO
A2: without empathy in design we discard the human aspect of leadership and motivation. Relationships move mountains not data!
At late -Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island
Looks like a great topic to engage ideas - glad is joining tonight!
A2: empathy needs to be out front. As the team assesses they need to be sure empathy leads (culture, Ss, Ts,relationships)
Sure, that's where I immediately went when seeing the process....it's continuous &about improving outcomes https://t.co/nwQPI1viVG
they are both base on continuous improvement theories.
That's a shame. We love ya!
My BEST experiences, as both participant and coach, have been active challenges! meets
Yeah! Thanks for being here, Carol!
A2: As teachers, our decisions affect many others and have significant consequences.
Welcome, Chuck! and I are moderating tonight's
A2: empathy is a door opener to propel the conversations that need to take place. Empathy helps draw opinions from the Ss
A2: Empathy means considering something from other viewpoints. Solutions can be designed with those viewpoints in mind.
A2 W/o understanding the needs & motivations of an audience, a product will inherently fail. (how I feel about OTES and lawmakers)
A2: Students ask - Why are we learning this? Let's examine that ? - Who cares? Who is affected by it? What is it related to?
reading about DT now-empathy-about understanding the needs &motivations of people-must build on empathetic questions and insight-
A2: Empathize involves seeing problem from many perspectives- even those you aren't comfortable with.
A2: Empathy is the "why", allows us to unleash our passion and ability to inspire (reading Sinek).
The more I realize it's not about me and all about them, the better I am as a leader!
Hi everyone. James from in for a little bit. Ready to go!
A2: I call it strategic outward lens: focus on the recipient of the innovation; understand their needs / perceptions
A2 From a coaching standpoint, for those more familiar with , empathy is the primary difference b/t PBL and
Or let's reimagine 'data'."Maybe stories are data with souls." - https://t.co/ChvJqfRNPB
A2: without empathy in design we discard the human aspect of leadership and motivation. Relationships move mountains not data!
A2 empathy as part of design thinking is crucial bc you are planning with the S in mind; purposeful, meaningful instruction
A2Utilizing empathy causes us to move beyond surface, band-aid approaches & engage in processes that lead to sustainable solutions
not sure it can be considered "true" designthinking Ss have produced film based on their writing & used for revising
A2 empathy allows understanding of all factors and should drive decisions of planning & implementing instructional strategies!
I love how you put the question back on them in a way to invoke deeper thinking!
A2: I think it goes deeper than just the specific product. Build empathy towards anything related to the product.
the Wo-Town crew out in full force tonight
YES! Students are at heart of education. Empathy needed. A2
A2:taking an empathetic stance allows you to take into account needs of others involved in the process. Better chance for success
A2: Empathy is so key...in design process, playing to our students strengths. More broad and important, empathy creates S buy-in
Yes, and it forces us to be observers of the world, w/out judgement
Agreed! Love it! https://t.co/hg63W5u1TN
A2: I call it strategic outward lens: focus on the recipient of the innovation; understand their needs / perceptions
A2: Empathy essential for team members to truly understand problem/motivation in order to move forward solving it.
A2 Empathy is a necessary component of persuasion, which means it is one of the first things to discuss with DT.
A2: without empathy everyone would be out to satisfy his or her own agenda this leaves little room for collaboration.
A2: Makes 100% sense why the process begins with empathy...it's all about the users!
A1: As citizens of a locally and globally interconnected world, we must empathize with others. Important for 21st cent. learning
A2:Perspective.It's nearly everything.U don't know any1 else's journey.Understanding must be multi angled. https://t.co/V9pgAnp2dn
Ooh-I really like that as an idea. Stories are > data to me all the time.
YES! e.g., team of Ts used to address "how might we bring joy back into the classroom daily?"
when used correctly and not ou agilely data is beneficial... Use it to teach not to preach!
A2:I haveTt use Design Thinking to design joy in their learning environment; empathy plays a critical role https://t.co/zFCDFXtDFA
That was hard to do during the challenge - but worth it!
A2 Design is synonymous with structure; but empathy puts the human touch w/ feelings to the design process.
A2 still not clued in to process, but I believe empathy closely relates to student voice and student agency. Never ignore!
Would love to see those answers!
A2: We do a LOT of "Yes, and..." with our DT students. What more? How else? Is that all?
Right, Chuck. Requires using interpersonal skills to connect and support others during the journey
A2 part of empathy is mindfulness, awareness of self and others; IMO that's a MUST for Ss
The collaboration generated fantastic community-building and curriculum ideas for coming semester
Teachers? Have them attack a problem, like rethinking bell schedule to go to a block, using the D process.
and also empathy btween Ts and Admin
***Love the collective genius of ideas! Q3 is coming up in 1 minute!
Joining a bit late - Jay Young, New Lexington HS chatting from Reynoldsburg!
I have those too! It's a long list! haha - DM me later & I'll share the Google doc :-) meets
Truly soaking in the application of Design Thinking with and tonight on . Better for being here!
Just imagine if we didn't plan with the Ss in mind! Not very purposeful! https://t.co/lkJSuv3QvN
A2 empathy as part of design thinking is crucial bc you are planning with the S in mind; purposeful, meaningful instruction
Cultures of trust build relationships. Empathy is modeled so students can relate and act in caring ways.
Been seeing you fly by here. Wanted to say hi!
Data is not just number sets- it is any evidence that can be used to identify or solve problems
Absolutely. I love this statement. https://t.co/ILJaLIQeiv
A2Utilizing empathy causes us to move beyond surface, band-aid approaches & engage in processes that lead to sustainable solutions
used correctly not punitively it's beneficial. Use data to gauge, but more importantly use it to teach not preach!
great seeing you in a different
The "why" is everything for our Ss. https://t.co/pWic5OYj03
A2: Empathy is the "why", allows us to unleash our passion and ability to inspire (reading Sinek).
Not a whole lot of sense in moving forward without your students moving with you. 👍🏼
*Generally* speaking, is more product-oriented, whereas is more human-centered
A2: empathy is so important when it comes to be an educator and collabing with others.
I love data!!!i thrive on it... When used correctly.
A3: prototype is synonymous with "untested". I think teachers fear failure as much as students do.
possibly how to explain the new designs to Ps who didn't learn it that way & still latch on to point system with behavior a factor
Learning alongside all of you about design thinking
A2: Building empathy w classmates, w the subject matter - that personal connection really kickstarts the creative process for Ss
A2: Empathy is like starting with the end in mind, forcing the designers to think of those for whom they are designing.
A3 Making is messy. It's difficult. It takes time. It's hard to justify.
How do you combat that attitude?
A3 as much as Ts say it's ok to fail, they really have to mean it, model it, & encourage it. Fear of failure might be the obstacle
A3: Might seem like a lower priority compared to more immediate classroom concerns like lesson planning and providing feedback.
A3: Money. Teachers are broke. There's only so much prototyping you can do with paper towel rolls and string.
A4) Fear-->Of being wrong, leaving someone out, including someone unwillingly, stepping on toes, going against the grain.
A3: some leaders believe they have all the answers and jump in without a prototype. They know it all & blame others for failures.
A3: Concern about the time it takes to test prototype, or concern about fairness.
That's been the toughest for me this year. 7 years of PBL and now DT. My mind wants a product!
Love the notion of "hard to justify" - how do we get over that hurdle?
New fav word!Collabing!Empathy is a lesson I find myself repeating over&over again. It's extremely vital! https://t.co/BSzVlqf8r3
A2: empathy is so important when it comes to be an educator and collabing with others.
A3: building also makes you vulnerable to criticism no matter how constructive.
A4:fear of failure?Higher ups w/no patience for the process?Ts who don't want the "flavor of the month" routine? All get in the way
Not100% like if P is problem vs project, but usually has specific user whereas PBL might or might not
Agreed! I think fear of failure is the biggest road block for some. https://t.co/mW9TUDkr8K
A3: prototype is synonymous with "untested". I think teachers fear failure as much as students do.
A3: fear, unwilling to relinquish control, funding, unsure of the unknown, "what if this fails?"
We all need to believe that Failure is but a steppingstone to success... A3
Maybe I will learn next week-attending :) Take time for solid reflection
See how I was wrong with A4? Lol :-)
Excellent point . However, strong empathetic leaders inspire Ts to take risks https://t.co/lPdsGvSJef
A3: prototype is synonymous with "untested". I think teachers fear failure as much as students do.
Not sure. I'd love to hear more from other Ts.
A3: I would say time, leaders feel they don't need a series of prototypes.
A4: Fixed mindset. If you think there is only 1 way to do something then why bother with trying something else
I agree about the fear - mine is fear that people think it's a waste of time.
A3) I think fear and time are both factors... The world moves fast and it doesn't wait for anyone. It's easy to be left behind.
A3: Unfortunately, there are times when thinking outside the box is frowned upon. It's "not the way we've always done it"
Fairness - that's interesting. How can we overcome that?
A4: fear of failure!!! Plain and simple... Trust your teachers! They know what they are doing... Give them a voice and allow risk!
Two office pranks built today that'll be hidden n the bosses office tomorrow AM. Video 2morrow https://t.co/Ph3Rr6Grn8
A3 Prototype, here, implies an iterative, long process. Often, we want solutions now. This may cause some not to engage in phase 4
great take, Lori. Agree whole-heartedly.
A3: Leaders want to discuss and come up with an definitive answer. They don't want to hear "Let's try this one."
A3: It can also be the idea of trying something new. Change isn't always everyone's friend, but in education that's all it does.
One of my banned sayings "the way we've always done it" .... https://t.co/y5WXwaPOVp
A3: Unfortunately, there are times when thinking outside the box is frowned upon. It's "not the way we've always done it"
A3: not allowing time for experimentation. there needs to be time for trying, piloting, risk taking
You weren't wrong at all. If I have kids making sidewalk poetry, what will my principal say?
A3 Admin time, OPES & being spread to thin seem likely hurdles to success of the prototype phase.
A3 As T, some S ideas are simply hard and costly to prototype! & Ss may have the idea but lack the logistical know how
I completely agree - how can we change that perception?
A3: They can be concerned about the amount of time it takes to make prototype as accurate and beneficial as possible
A3: using trial and error to solve a problem could be misinterpreted as weakness. Leaders are supposed to know it all
...all depends on the culture. If it encourages risk & inquiry, Ts won't fear failure https://t.co/caujYdosJP
A3 as much as Ts say it's ok to fail, they really have to mean it, model it, & encourage it. Fear of failure might be the obstacle
I agree with that - we have to teach not just the process, but affirm that trust needs to be built.
A3-I love the prototype phase! Love, love, love it
what if culture was based in trying something new?
A3:Fear of failure, cost of time, fear of credibility, not understanding how to follow through, fear of completing.
A3: Time; perhaps also a lack of shared leadership skills; lack of support or fear of failure.
I 100%agree...it's a culture issue
Ray, you don't "hope", you "expect" - bring 'em!
Sounds very similar to projects Good point.
A3 Sometimes the prototype phase ends up being the "final product" b/c you run out of time meets
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to the summer reading list!
valid research is outdated. We wait for validation to innovate we passed up a chance!
Thanks for the resource! This chat has me ready to learn more about DT
YES! That is what has to happen. Change the mindset.
A3: It might have something to do with relinquishing control, but I'm guessing.
Great bosses encourage growth mindset. Sounds like a wonderful place to work.
I say hurray to sidewalk poetry!
I agree - that critical mass is huge!
I'm so glad! You will love Design Thinking and its endless possibilities! https://t.co/hGv7UQ7HE5
Thanks for the resource! This chat has me ready to learn more about DT
It's difficult, given the set of parameters that we operate under. https://t.co/mTXIIAmxDy
I completely agree - how can we change that perception?
A3: or some As just throw a plan into action to watch others fail...the don't lead but rather setup failure to show power.
my students are just now coming around to that. We have deadlines - that's when we're finished.
Open discussion & empathy. Discussion about equality vs. equity could be helpful, too.
A1: Allows collective intelligence, open source understanding, systems thinking, and complete buy in by the team.
A3: Seems like it could be time consuming which can be a struggle given how tight some teacher schedules are.
Right, Neil. During times of change and innovation, members of our team require affirmation about their exploration
They enjoyed blackout poetry so much today. So fun.
A3 I'm always worried that implementing something new might impede students learning because of the newness.
...and to trust the process.
A3: Also helpful to remember that prototypes aren't the final polished version- just rough models to test an idea
A3: Prototyping - it is also not well understood - I think we need to educate leaders both in the process and in the language
:)...Thank you for sharing!!
A3 & some prototypes need fermentation time - leaders face pressure from the masses when it doesn't work NOW meets
A4: deliberate involvement and perhaps most importantly collaboration time. Amazing what it can produce
Lol love it!! May I "borrow" that??
A3: I prefer a longer method to get it right rather than setting a school further back...slow and steady wins the minds of Ss!
A4-leaders must model this process-not only admin leaders but Ts as leaders as well.
I think your last response can be used for A4 too.
A4 Less products, more time to create. Standards based learning, not number or letter grades.
A3: I'm taking a huge risk by incorporating the zombie apocalypse into my end of the year project. It may flop, but we'll see.
agree and almost always, the "first" prototype is not the best
Q4: Needs to be a school wide process so that Ts can support each other through the process and encourage each other to keep at it.
One thing I've learned from student teaching this year is the importance of modeling. Love modeling!
A4 Leaders get input from all interested parties early and often - Ts more willing to iterate if they feel heard meets
A4: create time for reflection and blogging. Allow Ss to share concerns through the process and document changes they want to see
A3: The plague of all edus: time. Iterations take planning, commitment, and follow-through. All things time interferes with
I agree - collaboration time is key - at Teacher-Based Teams are a game-changer for this!
A4) modeling and support for teachers that take risks for the sake of education
A3:risk of failure.Which should be the reason to go after it.Failure=growth! It's so important to model.Fall on your face. Get up.
I was thinking the same thing, didn't want to steal your thunder. https://t.co/xYqfiZV8Nk
A4-leaders must model this process-not only admin leaders but Ts as leaders as well.
You can use any digital graphic I send. (I did not create the TTWWADI Monster.)
Russ, FL principal. A3: Not having a support system in place that encourages failure & collaboration. Mistakes must be accepted.
A4 have meaningful, reflective risk-taking conversations, try try again, encourage qualities in Ts that we want Ss to demonstrate
bells and supervisors -- aren't they vestiges of a factory economy? We're on the cusp of a creative economy.
A4: by making the cycles transparent & allowing your staff to teach the way they feel is the best for Ss to learn & grow
The Scarlet Letter worked really well. And 12 Yrs a Slave. Both txts from this yr
A4: Design Thinking stays when used by all-leaders can model using in a staff meeting around a fun topic! https://t.co/quYmTVkIhM
A4 because we've been stuck in a 'piloting' mentality for so long! Fail fast and fail forward!
A4: Modeling the process & open reflection on it all. Leaders let others see success, failure, & learning along the way.
What a great point. Feeling they have a voice. https://t.co/yQ63qdvcpR
A4 Leaders get input from all interested parties early and often - Ts more willing to iterate if they feel heard meets
A4: Having mid-check points or setting goals as to where you'd like to be as a group. Gives something to look forward to.
A4: seek feedback from all involved...Ts, Ss, and even Ps! Build a reflective mindset and time for everyone to share. Takes time.
I've seen them mentioned but honestly know little about them. The time is so key & often so difficult to find
A4: We need a feedback loop from classroom to superintendent and back down. Every cog needs to feel that they help turn the ship.
A4: By modeling/supporting process. Time for collaboration and resources. Helping to limit barriers. Promoting creativity.
A4 Systems+design thinking:encourage iteration & quality feedback, slow down/think, avoid parachuting cats https://t.co/U9ztnFWUwQ
thats a great story! Love it!
We're not there yet in my district. Revision takes its place instead.
Not a whole lot happens or changes from standing on the sidelines. You have 2 get in & play!👍🏼 https://t.co/7A1ZUgWVcZ
A4: deliberate involvement and perhaps most importantly collaboration time. Amazing what it can produce
what's the difference between the pilot and the prototype? Is there?
I liked working with on a project because I saw improvements each iteration with my voice heard!
We know works in huge ways for students, but we can forget it works for us all! meets
A4 Studying a form of evolution would be a great way to model teh cyclical nature of revision and improvement
Model, Observe, Encourage the process into becoming a reality A4
We put our time in things we believe matters - it's a journey!
Power word = reflective!!! https://t.co/CdE5nY73V3
A4: seek feedback from all involved...Ts, Ss, and even Ps! Build a reflective mindset and time for everyone to share. Takes time.
T's need autonomy! Admin should support T's, provide resources, understand failure is opportunity 2 improve. Encourage risk taking!
A4Communicate & demonstrate the value of the process.Refer 2 what we knew before compared to the increased knowledge we gain after
as a coach I'd like to think there can still be influence from outside the lines though :-)
A4: continuous reflection and a willingness to broach contemporary, real world issues will keep the relevance.
Yes! And coach others through this--Ss, Ts, etc. What did we learn? Now what else can we try?
Do you use Myers-Briggs to balance and enlighten the group? Most Ts are SJs - anti-messy!
Huge part of is which implies every voice is valuable and deserves listening meets https://t.co/sjCzoDCcml
I liked working with on a project because I saw improvements each iteration with my voice heard!
A4: start with culture. does the comm have a common vision? share a ? willing to fail and grow together?
oh absolutely. But I'm talking about having time available when SLO/AIR/OGT/ACT/SAT/etc isn't monopolizing the time
Collaboration time is a must. When you introduce a new model, Ts need time to discuss and try out. A4
A4: There's a difference between having buy-in and having a consensus from the group. It's important to have collaboration.
A4: leaders can make sure to keep communication open and assure others that their ideas are being taken into account.
A4: What if we put a PDSA Quality improvement process alongside/across the top of Design Thinking Process https://t.co/RXqj55ADD5
A4: we also have to model patience (my ). We cannot expect immediate results. We explain that patience is necessary.
A4 Ensuring feedback throughout the process and modeling & encouraging course corrections
A4: leaders need to be involved in ideation process... Trust your Ts, be involved, ask questions, participate, lift them high!
Ela from Boston, as usual late post-bedtimes. Love these Q's. A4. Cultivating language & space around experimentation.
A4 Model. Motivate. Reward. Share. Encourage. Challenge.
Repeated practice and let it permeate the whole culture!
Q4: When you design as part of a team, the iteration stage can be where multiple educators try different things.
So true! But no, we did not delve into that, although we've done it before, so we know it is overwhelmingly SJs
A4: If you approach this like you approach Blooms Taxonomy, then it would become ingrained in your routine I think
In the "Wild Idea" world - why not pay teachers to be back a few days early so they can collaboratively plan for the year?
yep. Need trial time, discussion time, more trial time, etc. Subscribe to the on-going process
Remember the rule of - follow five leaders to build your PLN!
Which is better, consensus or buy in? Guessing buy in?
A4: DT process is plagued by a penchant for compliance in education: Ts and Ss. What do you mean, design, prototype?
A4: Open, comfortable lines of communication. Sharing success & failure needs to be part of everyday culture.
Someone has to see the larger picture & know which plays to call depending on the situation. 😉 https://t.co/Mf4rY63pw4
as a coach I'd like to think there can still be influence from outside the lines though :-)
*** is on fire! Q5 is coming up in one minute!
A4: remain open to improvement. If you're above improving, you'll be left out of the process.
This is also the intersection of design thinking & principles
A4) Keeping the focus simple and on one to two things. Changing the focus every month doesn't work. Can't reflect and refine.
Some of us are doing it anyway this summer w/o $.
I agree - there's a definite connection!
A4: create a professional enviro that craves feedback in order to grow. not scared of eval. but hungry for suggestions
yep...and who needs additional 'motivation' when the time comes
Our focus was interdisciplinary convo (empathy) so we understood each other's persp. We are in prototype stage
I know I have for about 20 years now...but it would be nice.
Ah, a tricky one! ;-) Asking for feedback is easy, taking the lumps is... meets
so have I, risk with guidance, FEEDBACK, and encouragement!
A4: By encouraging thought leaders in the building/district to be autonomous, build mastery, & rally around common purpose!
Love that - grassroots campaign!
Must complete cycle & not leave out Study/Act. If we do, it's just lots of PP and DoDo. https://t.co/cSyRziMHud
A4: What if we put a PDSA Quality improvement process alongside/across the top of Design Thinking Process https://t.co/RXqj55ADD5
A4: monitor the process - business model is to use a weekly standup meeting for teams to share out where they are/what they need
Right, Russell. It is essential to the learning process and leads to proactive approaches in our day-to-day work
Is there a distinction between proto-typing and a decision that's made and we move on to the next task?
A5 model it at staff meetings :)
glad you could make it tonight
Absolutely! Modeling is key!
motivation and sincere, functional feedback!!
A5: time for Ts to collaborate on design, 'field' test, evaluate, and continue molding into something awesome
A5 Allow failure. Support change. Listen.
A5: Love this question: involve Ss in reflection of our initiatives/ideas i.e. have them reflect on
A5: start it with building teams. Create opportunity for them to learn/be the process. Reward efforts early and often
hard to empathize w the haters - easier to tune them out when all they seem to do is complain but.. meets
A5: Those using design thinking need to speak up. Share. Tweet. Not enough know what it is & how valuable it is.
A5) model, share successes, collaborate on strategies
I agree! I think of it as Plan and Done.
A5: design becomes less scary when you feel supported by a team of like-minded professionals who share the same goal. Team up!
Q5: Ts can start small by creating collaborative relationships with other Ts who can support them through the process.
It's hard. There r things that an Edu wouldn't necessarily agree with, but would be in consensus if affected the group.
A5) Show that it works. Early adopters can implement, win some ground, roll out to fundamentalists, and BAM!
oh I can give some sincere feedback :-)
Q5: Host design thinking happy hour.
A4: Beyond iterative ... how about recursive? Can DT spawn another DT and then return to the original to finish? !
A5: start small with one issue and work the process. Very What about Bob...baby steps
A5: allow time to build relationships and collaborate...both Ss & Ts! Be models of the process and participate. Encourage growth.
A4: If processes aren't scheduled in advance, the important will be drowned by the urgent
A5: Those of us using it will have students who talk. Their parents will talk. Tchrs will come in to see us teach. It spreads.
A5 encourage, inform, support and praise teachers through the process!
Give Ss authentic/actual challenges, embedded in community & leverage cross-curriculum collab https://t.co/qWapqb0q71
Not just allow failure but expect it. Foster it, because it promotes stretch and out-of-the-box thinking!
Analyzing + understanding data= missing link for . It would reform planning; it would make numbers less stressful.
A5: teach it to teachers! Use it, live it, model it, revise it...so teachers understand and use it then... Students use it!!!
what would allowing failure look like?
ah yes...starting a movement
For us comes down to deadline/priority - is it enough to move on or so important we go again?
Important that we are able to differentiate between the two on a daily basis
A5: DEEP understanding of overall Ed & Ss context and clear definition of problem. Surface understanding = surface level results.
Cross-curricular collaboration works well when starting a new initiative. A5
A5: Ex. of critical thinking, collaboration of ideas, learning from others different than oneself. Everything Ts want Ss to know.
I agree, Tricia! The more I study and use it, the more it becomes my approach to leading!
I would like to retweet this a thousand times meets https://t.co/LF2gX4FjrX
A4: If processes aren't scheduled in advance, the important will be drowned by the urgent
A5: Teach to staff, then have most growth minded Ts serve as guinea pigs. If they're successful, celebrate and promote like crazy
I appreciate that you brought up a key point about recognizing and rewarding the work!
WHOOPS! I jumped too soon!
Was told to stop trying to flip my lessons b/c Ps didn't like. "Do what works"--not "figure out how to make it work."
great thought! Thought about opening up a board to allow for brainstorming. Let the ideas flow
A5: Model. Also Include teacher/student voice in how to move forward and sustain process. Have T's fishbowl.
seriously... I would work for sincere, accurate feedback to succeed and take action on, who needs money?
Someone at a conference, OSEA meeting or professor just showed this video, it is incredible! https://t.co/C2KtakQDEz
A5: Show the parents. Show the District Leaders. Involve all stake holders. It is different. They need to feel it/see it/touch it
A5: It is already there- but the steps have many aliases. Recognize what to look for, identify pieces that may be missing.
A 4 There's a time & place 4 design thinking. There's also a need 2 focus on pedagogy & deep learning. More things is not better.
Agree. Most underutilized resource in education is fellow teachers.
Leaders should embrace their creative confidence & leverage community resources to prototype https://t.co/YAuh90hVY3
Great video to depict the need to iterate!
Hello my name is Michelle. I am a students from MUSE in UC Berkeley and currently a student teacher in SF.
. Yes, we can be lone nuts! Lol
Amazing the job people will do, Ss included, if you're able to give awesome feedback
A6: Define. Lots of new ideas to try next week - my mission will hinge on clarity.
A5 I wish, I wonder mtgs. Ls need to be prepared for mtgs, by not having agenda except to FIND agenda. Focus on ideating:Learning
A5: Consider all ideas in staff meetings and make the effort to allow differences.
YES! Could not agree more! https://t.co/GEfdmwkkQR
A5: teach it to teachers! Use it, live it, model it, revise it...so teachers understand and use it then... Students use it!!!
A 5 There's a time & place 4 design thinking. There's also a need 2 focus on pedagogy & deep learning. More things is not better.
A5 Get the local businesses to help promote RT by showing how they use it in their strategies.
wait till you see some videos from June 12th...you might really call me crazy then
pushing back - they need to go together. DT is not another thing. It is the cloud that content resides in.
A5: DT is not new or something extra. ppl already do it. give them common lang. and help them practice empathy
encouraging them to embrace the idea that they don't always have to succeed! Failure is not a dirty word!
You mean like, good job, nice work..? 🤔 https://t.co/gRlZzPWaZ0
Amazing the job people will do, Ss included, if you're able to give awesome feedback
A4 amazing, tangible ideas for embedding Design thinking in schools from the crew!
I don't see them as exclusive - design thinking is a way to dig deeper in learning.
it's also amazing the lack of motivation when feedback is inaccurate, not positive, not reflective, & not actionable
I would be lost without my and colleagues!! https://t.co/mHzOt5QA6H
A5: design becomes less scary when you feel supported by a team of like-minded professionals who share the same goal. Team up!
I gave you a sneak peek but Q6 is coming up in one minute! !
Absolutely! I mindfully use it whenever I can in my workshops! https://t.co/3gKCWGdQGt
Repeated practice and let it permeate the whole culture!
Love it! Like an edcamp meeting style! https://t.co/8eEKa11yTF
A5 I wish, I wonder mtgs. Ls need to be prepared for mtgs, by not having agenda except to FIND agenda. Focus on ideating:Learning
yes, fail fast, fail often
no I mean like "that was amazing!!! So how can we improve on amazing?"
I love this idea!! meets https://t.co/OIE11jAuHp
yeah, what if bachkchanneling the week before meetings introduced topics and discussion? https://t.co/47NVJpZAVy
A5: Consider all ideas in staff meetings and make the effort to allow differences.
Absolutely! Test small and quick, decide on a fail/win and them launch!
yes, but I think there needs to be a good combo of brutal honesty coupled with caring 'hugs'
Scary, but yes. And be willing to be wrong in front of Ss.
Relationships = everything. Help others express themselves, experience intellectual generosity https://t.co/WqExbx9HnX
Measure twice (or three or four times), cut once?
A5: Structure PLC agendas around each stage of the cycle.
we have a community norm at our school
Can be used to have Ss solve real world or historical issues...staff can use it for workplace culture; Admin can use too
5 positives for one constructive criticism is when the magic happens! Teachers are passionate people!
Sounds like another cool place to work.
We've been building it for long time now - failing & growing together helps keep us humble
For ... Using to collaborate in the classroom! A free webinar by MIE at 4pm on Thurs (4/28) https://t.co/oOHbDPHkae
so like, "brutal hugs?!?"
get as much proof of concept as you need. The Lean Startup is a great concept to lend from!
A5: By teaching dt to teachers & ensuring they understand &see the value in it, teachers will be more willing to use it in class.
making sure that the enviro is "safe" and ready for effective feedback makes failing easier
A5: Introduce in a staff meeting in a fun way! This creates buy-in and ! Tt will run with it! https://t.co/NDgVpXHBPI
A6: We need to Define one thing that we want to go differently next year while still in this school year. Specifically Define it.
How many of us are motivated by positive feedback to continue difficult callings in education? Think about that and provide it!
A6 Remind Ss about empathy as they create their final speech outlines tracing their path from interview to product. CCP Comp 1
A6 Ask a S or T "what do you need today?" & really hear them. Start with right away & go from there meets
Absolutely - kids and adults need to feel safe to explore and not be penalized or judged!
ha ha. A rapport that allows honesty when it needs to take place without hard feelings
Ok. One last question. What's an example of a school-based or district-based decision that withstands this protocol?
A6: Prototype - I want to try stand up meeting as way to keep multiple parts of my team in touch & cross collaborating
A6: look at attempts made from teams- start amping up to finish year with trials. Make adjustments
A6: Define stage, to collaboratively problem solve with peers.
A6: with my dept: Define. We know aspects what want to improve. Let's pick one, define.
Dennis - I use this process in everything I lead. Grading Practices, new initiatives, etc.
A6: we have a couple plans we'll Ideate about. Looking at what our best plan of action will be. Then we move from there, we hope!
spend some time continuing to improve what you are already good at. Too much time is spent on our deficiencies.
A6 Ask Ss to critique a recent lesson or assignment - let them help you revise it from their eyes meets
Designate physical space for each phase of DT cycle. Encourage them 2 post challenges/moonshots https://t.co/gf5CApS1Nc
A6: Create "ThinkSheets," as I call them, to help people conceptualize the process. I'l share. :-)
promotes this with our team every Friday - about 20-25 people in under 10 minutes to share!
A6 Collaborate with parents. Without parent input, we won't be able to get the students on board.
I like visual Challenges/Moon Shots.
Great ideas here . . . love this!
Thank you, Moderators and . I hope to see you at next Monday.
we use "I like, I wish, I wonder" lang. for fb. Ss are used to hearing and offering feedback
A6: Engagement. Using K. Lamar's "Sing About Me" as intro to M. Angelou's IKWTCBS 2 increase S engagement in themes of book
A6: Define: Use fishbone/Problem tree analysis: ASK WHY? Define root cause; Why are school class schedules so complicated?
For sure! And remembering it's a two-way street Ts need to let Ss be honest with them.
A6: with your colleagues in mind...choose something fun like end of year celebration and have fun! https://t.co/WfvWAACgje
Sorry, didn't see the reply, perhaps I should have used attitudes rather than parameters.
A6: Get feedback from both students and parents in order to support the needs as well as possible!
kinda! But very sincere brutal hugs! I love you & that's why we are going to do this together!
A6 Let Ss & Ts find in unlikely places- play as hard as you work! MAKE the time for meets
Excellent - thank you both for helping me better understand the model. I want to study up on it & experiment.
want to be great; work through constant change & feel they are jumping through hoops. !
A6 Improve/revise student advisory period. Data study and listen to student and staff feedback.
Thank you everyone for joining us at . It's been awesome connecting with you all. DThinking changed me. Be brave and give it a go!
it's done together! A collaborative effort! No ones alone!
Thanks for the great tonight. Helps me think about what comes next!
Thank you for hosting. It went fast.
I used fishbone model to help get past "we can't" and focus on what we can do.
