#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.
Heidi, French Teacher from Virginia. My favorite holiday tradition- going to see light displays as a family and baking cookies with my mom and grandma. #langchat
Bonsoir, #langchat ! French 2-AP & Digital Literacy Coach in Mount Vernon, WA. We’re not holiday folks, but it is my husband’s birthday on the 25th! Going to Hawai’i is our tradition.
#fslchat#langchat Most of you may be already on holiday, one more day to go here! Threw this together based on one I saw done in English using many of YOUR resources. Tell me what I can add. Hope you can use it, even if it is next year! https://t.co/Dr0NZ5riHK
A1 #langchat Strong input with Digital & Analog Storytelling have supported student confidence this semester. Different modes & projects keep it fresh & challenging.
#langchat A1 allowing kids to use flexible seating, incorporating level ups, using the TALK interpersonals (still in the learning process) and chat stations, incorporating social justice, personalized vocab
A1: Empoweringstudent learning through voice and choice. I have done more Google Infusions and used @Flipgrid to promote #studentvoice. @AdobeSpark for digital storytelling has been a huge hit with my Ss. #langchat
A1 #langchat Acknowledging that many if our sts are going through stressful moments reminds me to create experiences that promote a calm and inviting atmosphere. No tests or major projects.
A1 #langchat And oh yes, @Flipgrid and doing random, unannounced speaking and writing checks across topics for proficiency check, NOT grade, and upgraded my rubrics to provide more feedback with a glow and grow section.
A2: Not realizing that my school blocks things on the students Chromebooks that are available on mine. I had designed awesome @edpuzzle lessons, only to learn the videos were blocked. #langchat
#langchat A2: The guided essays for level II class. I didn't scaffold the way I should before giving the essay. Many didn't understand some of the questions from the year before.
As ITRT now - I tell my teachers to let IT know in advance for any videos/sites that they are thinking of using so that we can unblock for their use #langchat
A2 #langchat Perhaps mixing three levels of students into a College in the High School class. We leveled up together, but some personalities/abilities don’t mix very well. It’s still under experimentation.
A3: My 1st Block French 1s were very quiet and did not looked to participate. However once I introduced them to @Flipgrid and @AdobeSpark they let their walls down. Never had a class that was like this bunch! They have come a long way! #langchat
#langchat I chose the mixture of French 2,3, & above students thinking that they would blend well together. Fr2 sts were stronger than some 3s. As always, we learn and improve.
A3 #langchat Getting the Ss who are not used to speaking in the lang all class to do so by holding them to a grade & they saw they could do it w/ aids.
A3 One thing that I had to work through with my WL teachers was when online resources weren’t working the way they were promised to & we were already almost halfway thru the semester when it was resolved by the company #langchat
I have a couple teachers in my building that are going thru this as well this year - everything they used to do in Google isn’t doing exactly what they want in Microsoft sometimes #langchat
A4: Hearing my Ss present their final presentations and seeing them realize how far they have come and how much they have grown as a language learner. #langchat
A4 #langchat Writing an entire letter in French and not being afraid to do so despite being novices. Actually making it through a TALK interpersonal and accomplishing the task, even if it was messy!
A4 It’s been 2yrs since I left the WL classroom, but seeing my Spanish 2 students in level 4 & AP now with so much confidence in their speaking skills #langchat
A4: My Lv 4 Ss could debate about the concept of beauty w/o my help. Lv 2 Ss could navigate Schoology w/help in TL & Lv 3 Ss debated on if water is wet in TL. Use of TL. Lv 2 Ss understanding the errors of their writing to pen pals and making corrections w/some aid. #langchat
A2 Work/life balance. So many great new digital tools to learn about and make projects with, but hubs and family think I’ve disappeared. #momwho#langchat
A5 #langchat Google Expeditions with Cardboard for our stations to introduce Paris. Very engaging, but I will need to create a better script interpretive activity.
A5 #langchat Having no desks in the class. Ss enjoy it, esp. the tall ones. They like the flexible seats and being able to move more freely. It seems to encourage them to speak more in TL and we have procedures for writing and our Chromebooks.
A6: The move for Lv 4 to cover the 1st 3 themes of AP curriculum w/scaffolding and more extensive diagnostic writing for Lv 2 & 3. Also more emphasis of how the Ss are responsible for their work & lesson videos. #langchat
A7: More Conversation circles for all levels, more Flipgrid, more Spark and cultural comparisons, and Ss moving through the work at their pace. I want to incorporate TALK as well once I've done more reading. #langchat
