#whatisschool is an award winning edchat space where people can express an unbiased response to questions about schooling, where educators have a voice in shaping the future through their experience, recommendations and interests. Join us Thursdays 7pm ET / 11pm GMT / Friday 7am SGT/WA (Perth) / Friday 9am AEDT / Friday 11am NZT.
A1. Firstly create a classroom environment in the classroom where students can take risks and express themselves then give students options. #whatisschool
A1 First, you have to really get to know all of your students. Building deep, meaningful relationships is the key to really getting to know your students. Then you make learning relevant the genius shows up in everyone. #whatisschool
A1: affirmation of potential and cultivation of autonomy. Let them drive their ideas and I’ll guide, cheer, support, manage along the way. #whatisschool
A1: A student can show their 'genius' when they believe in themselves and know that their teacher does as well. Provide an atmosphere of trust, belief and freedom each day #whatisschool
A1. Listen, build relationships, learn about Ss. Compliment their strengths & build upon their interests & passions through challenges. Celebrate Ss contribution & encourage collaboration for growth & genius moments #whatisschool
Bernadette from Ireland here, sociologist providing conscious education programmes and health and wellness programmes for educators and students #whatisschool
#whatisschool
A1 hate to play the devils advocate, but there is a difference between developing passions in students and seeing genuis. We are all talking aboit developing passions
Yikes forgot that with our time change #whatisschool is earlier for me, Faige sub teacher in Los Angeles. Two weeks in Thailand and Bali and boy jet lag hit me big!!
A1: I believe to harness each kids inner genius you have to begin with relationships and passions. Build an atmosphere where they feel comfortable learning and discovering #whatisschool
A1. Tough Cookie. With all the standerdized testing, you have to be very creative to enable #personalizedlearning and amplify #stuvoice. Waiting for your thoughts... #whatisschool
A2: It depends on how it is shared. If it is a word it can create a culture of "elitist' behavior, if it is encouraging mistakes & more learning, it is positive! #whatisschool
A2 Depends on how it's used. If used as a euphemism for "this should all be easy for you," it's a disaster! As an opportunity to experiment, risk, and become smarter, it's powerful & emboldening. #whatisschool
A2: genius encourages a culture of continuous growth, risk taking, and confidence! Pretty much the polar opposite of the tradition institutionalized model of education. #whatisschool
A1: I believe to harness each kids inner genius you have to begin with relationships and passions. Build an atmosphere where they feel comfortable learning and discovering #whatisschool
A2. It depends on the way the word is framed. If framed well it can inspire and motivate. If framed poorly it can be a source of isolation and feelings of inferiority #whatisschool
A2 Sometimes students understand genius as perfection and they are so afraid to try because they don't think they will be perfect. It's a fixed mindset and something we have to address daily #whatisschool
A2: In my school genius as a word is very rarely used. We encourage students to be creative learners who make a difference in the world we live #whatisschool
A2. It promotes a culture where every student understands they have value, importance, and ability. It means education is for everyone and genius may look different, but all contributors are important now and in the future society #whatisschool
A2 in our school genius are students who think out of the box, who take risks, innovate, and challenge ideas. My job is to always have an environment where students are nudged along the way #whatisschool
Might just be me, but I find that a decent chunk don't fit. I think part of our role is to show them how to find their fit and ensure they know that "fitting" isn't always for the best. #whatisschool
Easier said than done. I work in a public school in Israel. Our education is very centralized. The admins have to do what the @edu_il MOE decides. #whatisschool
There was once a study where a teacher called students scholars. The Ss academic behaviors grew to meet that new expectation. Imagine what could happen if we called learners geniuses for their ability, strengths, resiliency, and contributions. #whatisschool
A2: language and implications are important, so having expectations that everyone can achieve greatness supports the successful journey that will include failure and setbacks. #whatisschool
A2 looking at genius through a lens of “interests, passions, what makes kids tick” Their strengths and voice. Ts can watch, listen and learn. Thinking of @AngelaMaiers#youmatter#whatisschool
BC school as an institution is created for (and this not meant to sound racist) but white middle class kids. We should be.looking at schools embracing and celebrating difference ,any don't #whatisschool
A1 Bring out the genius in every student by honoring who they are, developing a culture of trust where their voices can soar. Bring your passion & let their creativity rise. #whatisschool
A3 providing students choice to freely express themselves, to do what they want while watching from afar. Encourage and confer with them every step of the way #whatisschool
A3: Its tough. We have knives and fire so the risks are inherent. The risk is ‘attempt something you know you cannot do’. Then learn to do it. #whatisschool
A3 My mantra is, "This is new; this is hard; if you get it wrong then the challenge is to figure out how and why." Constant encouragement to just give things a crack. #whatisschool
A3: don't prescribe every part of a summarize. Be a little vague and provide plenty of choice to watch their inner genius interpret what to do #whatisschool
A3. I take risks. I own my mistakes. I challenge myself & push myself out of my comfort zone. I actively model this behavior and verbalize the process- my struggles, points of growth, reasons for continuing. Doing this makes it easier for my students to do the same. #whatisschool
A3 formative assessment and reflection. Learn the 'rules' so that you know how to break them. The follow up to "Disobedient Teaching" really ought to be "Disobedient Learning". #whatisschool
A3 an old teacher of mine used to say “nothing hard in this world, you’re just not yet used to it”. Growth mindsets versus a set one, make them see the bigger picture and work to achieve it. #whatisschool
I don’t think people are not doing that / maybe it is the word .. I don’t think a word needs to be used to capture what you have said here #whatisschool
A2 A passion/wonder-filled, curiosity-powered culture encourages the creative side of students to emerge because it is Stu-centered, offers choice and leads to amplified voice. #whatisschool
A3 providing students choice to freely express themselves, to do what they want while watching from afar. Encourage and confer with them every step of the way #whatisschool
A3 constant reflection and feedback. Powerful questions to help students think and reevaluate help build their confidence to try out new stuff. #whatisschool
A2: Depends in what context you are using the word genius. Everyone is genius in something. Put it us all together and we can rock the world! #whatisschool
A3: I think it is a good thing when you mess up in front of the students so the students see that you are human and that you can move past a mistake. #whatisschool
A3: You can also take different levels of risk. Needs to be personalized. If a student is very shy, that risk should be much less of a risk than someone who is outgoing. #whatisschool
A3: I think it is a good thing when you mess up in front of the students so the students see that you are human and that you can move past a mistake. #whatisschool
A3: I think it is a good thing when you mess up in front of the students so the students see that you are human and that you can move past a mistake. #whatisschool
#whatisschool hi first time AND late to the party but I encourage Ss to take risks over time after building a foundation of trust but also by building in chances for success. Help kids feel PROUD because many have never felt that and then watch them grow!
And if you know your shortcomings, you surround yourself with those that make up a great team. Need to reflect and also own up to shortcomings. I feel it is a strength when I can do that. #whatisschool
Relationships, trust, modeling, encouragement. Passion based learning, project based learning. Let learners find their love for learning + passion = genius! #whatisschool
A2: Genius implies a culture of srudents with a high IQ due to years of kids being told "you're smart". Break down that barrier and tell the student specifics on their progress. #whatisschool
A3: Remember they are learning and exploring still. Be supportive and not critical. Even when you think you’re being helpful you must watch your words!❤️#whatisschool
I agree, however I don’t think we should pinhole all of this into one word - the things you described could be many things ... genius as a term is sometimes misunderstood so we have to be careful #whatisschool
A4: Mistakes are proof that you are learning! REPEAT! I encourage my students NOT to use rubbers, they can edit their work and make changes but not use rubbers, I want to see their mistakes #rubberjail :) #whatisschool
Does it need to be defined? I think it differs from person to person and is often associated with their upbringing - I Guess it is outstanding intellectual or Creative ability that is natural? #whatisschool
I don't necessarily encourage mistakes, but I do encourage risk taking and getting outside your comfort zone and that you might make a mistake. My Muratism is "if that's the worst thing that happens all day, it's going to be a great day! " #whatisschool
A4. I’m transparent. Mistakes are part of life. We need them. Perfection doesn’t teach us lessons or help us grow & become stronger. I give examples of my own mistakes & growth. I connect my mistakes with theirs. #failforward#whatisschool
A4 You need to create the culture for it; work with colleagues to nurture that culture. Ts are not renowned for enjoying or owning their mistakes which makes it hard to model mistake making and the subsequent learning #whatisschool
A4 I always say,"mistakes are part of learning" The goal is to learn from the mistake and then use what you've learned in some meaningful / relevant way #whatisschool
A4: By creating a risk free learning environment, making mistakes yourself and owning up to them. Positive praise for the effort should equal positive praise for the correct answer. #whatisschool
A4 I like using the redesign stage of the engineering design process to help Ss see that making mistakes are an important part of learning. #whatisschool
A4 you’re in the business of teaching, model life skills and all the victories and difficulties it comes with. Failing is ok, but learning from it is better. #whatisschool
I met some co-teachers in CA who plan the mistakes they will make in front of the kids so they can catch each other and model positive, adaptive response to failure. So brilliant. #whatisschool
Every time I make a mistake, and they are often, I tell the kids I was just checking to make sure they were paying attention. And then we laugh! #whatisschool
I studied Growth Mindset along w my class. #whatisschool We learned about the science of growing the brain. Ss responded so well to the power of “yet!” Fascinating!
Also important that we model getting past it. No win nor mistake is final. Many students think that once a mistake is made, that's the end. #whatisschool
A4 I found this awhile back on Twitter. Very few make progress without experiences set back, mistakes and failure. But if we don’t encourage “trying” and going for it, then how will we experience success and #growthmindset#whatisschool
A3: like others said, I model. I also try to empower others by suggesting things that may be of interest and consistently reminding “you can do it. I believe it” (helping verbs, participles, Frankenstein, @UpstanderBrand, @NationalHistory, whatever) #whatisschool
Yes, perspective. I would love to ask learners what genius means to them. @JoyceBronwyn this can be your next flipgrid project :) I was seen the same in school, dyslexic, I never had a teacher ignite my genius or a passion for that matter. #whatisschool
A5 probably the hardest thing to do. Especially if values and philosophies aren’t aligned. Good frameworks and protocol, established routines, clear expectations and goals have to be set up and practiced all of the time. #whatisschool
Hold the presses! #DyslexicsUnite This is why I like you so much! That uphill battle is what defines us! Best thing that could have happened to me! #whatisschool
A4: Here's a segment from a video in my 5 Day Gratitude Challenge for Ts that talks about embracing struggles. When we learn from them we can teach our Ss to do the same #whatisschool
A5 everything has to have a purpose, nothing for the sake of one-upping another person. It’s not a contest or anything it’s cultivating an environment of learning. #whatisschool
A5: Encouraging diligence by recognizing students for their progress no matter how small. Students will work harder and smarter when they know for care and have noticed. #whatisschool
The sad truth is that so many students have this exact experience. We have to change this because every student is capable of so much but so many teachers don't encourage students #whatisschool

A5: Never. Give. Up. I tell them that I won’t let them quit. Jrs and Srs can get very disheartened when trying to pass a grad test. You’ve come this far! #whatisschool
YES! Looking back on my edu experience is what drives my passion for transforming traditional education. No child should feel mediocre or unrecognized. If one edu would have said to me I was a genius I truly believe school and learning would have been so different #whatisschool
A5) I think diligence is a result of intrinsic motivation and internal values. I believe it can happen with deeper learning experiences with a sense of purpose #whatisschool
A5 being conscious of the littlest things. I presented a class project and I used citations just to show my students it’s importance in all our work. #whatisschool
A5 Diligence/perseverance The end game elevates that inner feeling of accomplishment. No matter how small or big that growth/movement as part of learning #whatisschool
A simple way to do that is making them choose a different platform each time. That leads to problem solving, critical thinking and seeking out what they want to explore. #whatisschool
A5 diligence is giving that hard headed teacher/student your time and effort to make them feel supported and heard. Listening to their highs and lows. #whatisschool
A5 (contd) and suggesting goals that they can actually do. As a leader you have to follow up and not leave it in the air and bring it up when it’s crunch time. #whatisschool
The best part of making them choose a different platform each time is that I get to learn a lot and they learn from each other since I don't know how to use most of them. But if they want help, we Google it together and solve the problem. #whatisschool
This is exactly why I've chosen to open up Inspire Academy Middle School. The heart ache that this has caused my family has pushed my thinking in transforming education #whatisschool

Here's the list of platforms they can choose from. https://t.co/YHUtBDU15j I don't know how to use most of them, so I am excited when they choose one I've not seen. #whatisschool
A2. The culture of the word genius is based in the fixed mindset. It teaches them that what they can do is unchangeable, that certain things are unattainable #whatisschool
We need to save these tweets! This is just the beginning! This is our story and love that our journey can make an impact for students everywhere! #whatisschool
A6 chats with everyone. Talking to them and asking about their highs and lows, goals, and what they’re really interested in. Genuinely giving each person your time and interest. #whatisschool
A4: I like to teach my students the motto, "mistakes are proof that you are trying" and focus on how learning is more about the process of discovery, experience and reflection. #whatisschool
A5: there's a lot of power in asking good questions. you can ask questions that prompt them, in responding, to be especially mindful and focused and persistent; questions initiate response-generation, which often compels a necessary diligence #whatisschool
A6: This is building relationships, finding the students "why", believing that the impossible is possible, student centered learning, and did I mention building relationships?! #whatisschool
I am so inspired to do more! This is the best part of the chat for me tonight! Might have failed as a co-moderator, but this connection is everything! #whatisschool
Bringing out the genius, the individual gifts of your students look like in your classroom and school? If your students were to answer this question, how would they respond? #whatisschool
A6 Especially in the younger grades give Sts time, time to reflect, to think, to problem solve, to come up with their own answers and then time to ask their questions. Space time and joy in learning and living #whatisschool
Cannot thank you enough for the invitation! Loved the different perspectives & the commitment to bring out the best in every student! TY all for being extraordinary! #whatisschool
Honestly, this is exactly what just happened tonight thanks to all of you joining #whatisschool! I am humbled by the number of educators who inspire me to want to be more & do more!
