John Gunnell, Principal of Jack Young Middle School in beautiful Baraboo, Wisconsin. Enjoying the vivid fall colors this weekend.
-
Call me weird, but I love parent/teacher conferences!
-
Q1: Describe the overall format of Parent-Teacher Conferences in your school/school district.
-
I enjoy parent/teacher conferences, too!
-
A1: Our conferences remain "arena" style with all teachers in our gym and commons area.
-
A1: 1st & foremost we invite the Ss to attend the conference w/ the parents. Then arena style which is new for 5th grade this yr!
-
A1: I am hoping that we will begin moving more towards student led conferences. This is a work in progress.
-
-
A1: We have tried several formats (invite only, team conferences). We have conference twice per year.
-
6th graders have done this at the end of the year for the last 2 years. Share their learning with digital portfolios.
-
- Love that. We may need to talk. Maybe at SLATE this year?
-
Parents r invited to come 10 minutes early to pick up a folder to review prior to meeting with a teacher - scheduled conferences
-
- Thanks for joining us here on once again.
-
No SLATE for me this year. MS/HS AWSA conference and hopefully NASSP/NAESP in July.
-
-
Q2: What's the primary purpose of Parent-Teacher Conferences? Has the fundamental purpose of PT-Conferences changed over the years?
-
A2: The main purpose is to develop a positive connection between home and school to best meet the łearning needs of the student.
-
A2: The main purpose should be to forge a łearning partnership, not to simply report on student "grades"
-
A2: strengthen partnership and strengthen communication - also show student work-show what growth looks like
-
A2 The purpose of a face to face conference is to personalize the link between the classroom, the school, the student and the home.
-
Q3: Please share YOUR best practices as they relate to ensuring a successful Parent-Teacher Conference.
-
A3: Personally invite parents, communicate your expectations to teachers, maintain a positive focus, be visible, feed your staff.
-
A3: I have the Ss write letter 2 their parent acting like they're me telling them abt them.Does that make sense?Ss love writing it!
-
A3: The student's honesty is always probably more than what I would have shared! !
-
Q4: What tips can you offer to new teachers as they prepare for their first Parent-Teacher conferences?
-
A3: give parents materials ahead of time: time with teacher is spent answering ?s & discussing how to maximize student performance
-
A3: The letter proves that Ss know their own strengths and weaknesses both in behavior & academics.
-
Love this, Jerry. It's almost like "flipping" a conference! Great time saver.
-
A3: students self assess using behavior rubrics ahead of time and discuss with parents how the are being a solid citizen in school
-
A4: Keep it positive. PT Conferences are not the time to rehash every imperfection/petty crime.
-
A4: Definitely start with something positive about the student. Ask the parents if they have any questions or concerns.
-
A4 start with positives, be honest relate to your parents
-
A4: Smile a lot. Shake hands, look em' in the eye. Let them know you want their child to succeed. Let them know how they can help.
-
-
A4: Focus on the path for the student to grow their skills and knowledge
-
A2 love S lead conferences, S take ownership of their learning
-
Love the smile a lot, John! I also tell P that I will take good care of their child while they're at school.
-
Q5: How can schools/teachers use technology in order to help improve the Parent-Teacher Conference experience?
-
A4 make sure they know their child is ur priority
-
-
Use digital portfolios to showcase student progress! https://t.co/ZcsUaf9cdT
-
-
Q5: How can schools/teachers use technology in order to help improve the Parent-Teacher Conference experience?
-
A5: You can use tech to share positive images and video of school activities and events.
-
A5: Have students demonstrate current technologies being implemented in your school.
-
A5 We have Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts that share great things about our school every day.
-
A5. Jumping in late but I don't understand why more schools don't utilize video conferencing for PT conferences?
-
