Hello #cuechat -ters! I'm April a 3rd grade T in SoCal. If you ask my hubby I'm obsessed with vacuuming & I love to suck up new ideas! I would be a vacuum!
Good evening #cuechat I'm Vicky, K-8 Technology Teacher, from the Los Angeles area. Cleaning? What's that? 😄Okay, I'd be a Roomba! Gotta be a robot of some kind.

Hi All! I am Dustin in Simi. Treasurer of GCCUE and If I were a cleaning tool I would be a leaf blower, blowing the mess away! And I love to be outside! #cuechat

As you all know if we are not all actively reflecting on our practices we will become obsolete. Using a global focus what are some of the things we need to scrub away from education? #cuechat
Hello all! I'm a current college student at Chapman and if I were a cleaning tool I would be a sponge maybe? I also like to take in new ideas, but I also like to give new ideas. #cuechat
A1: The fixed mindsets, too many think that they can't do things differently when all they have to do is try, then the #growthmindset will blossom! #cuechat
As you all know if we are not all actively reflecting on our practices we will become obsolete. Using a global focus what are some of the things we need to scrub away from education? #cuechat

A1: Factory model of teaching.
One test, one grade.
Sexist dress codes.
Lack of agency (for both Ss and Ts).
Drill and kill.
Timed math tests.
Busy work.
Punitive compliance strategies.
Shall I continue? #CUEChat

A1: I would love to see school organized as a "leveling up" scenario. Teachers teach each kid individually so that they can level up and move on to the next thing when they are ready. Heard this from @alicekeeler about 3 or 4 years ago and am still excited. #cuechat
A1: One-size-fits-all education. We should be about personalization and choice for our students. I love choice in my own learning, why shouldn't Ss get that too? #cuechat
A1 Would love to get rid of
required surveys that don't have an action plan follow up
Worth measured on one day
sexist dress code
Old way of doing school. #cuechat
Let’s narrow the focus a little. Sometimes cleaning means looking at old fixtures or furnishings and deciding they need replacement. What are some big changes things we need to reconsider in classrooms specifically? #cuechat
A2: rows and columns, fixed seating charts, and static classroom practices. No Teacher desk, and no "front" of the room. Have a flexible classroom and student-centered focus. #cuechat
Classrooms need to be student-centered. Many are adult-oriented. Ask students what to put on walls, what furniture is needed, where supplies should go. #CUEChat

A2: I taught at a school where when had "fishbowls" at the ends of each hallway, glass walled rooms where students could expand the classroom and work on projects, loved those! #cuechat
Let’s narrow the focus a little. Sometimes cleaning means looking at old fixtures or furnishings and deciding they need replacement. What are some big changes things we need to reconsider in classrooms specifically? #cuechat
A2: I want to get rid of the ownership culture that Ts have with their Ss. All of the Ss at the school belong to all Ts. I think this would create a more democratic and respectful culture all around. #cuechat
A2: I'll answer this one for my personal classroom. I want everything on wheels so it can be reconfigured easily. No more tethered desktop computers either. #cuechat
Let’s narrow the focus a little. Sometimes cleaning means looking at old fixtures or furnishings and deciding they need replacement. What are some big changes things we need to reconsider in classrooms specifically? #cuechat
A1: since we@are thinking globally. Let’s dwap in a global perspective, tackle a global problem and connect to a classroom far away. Collaborative video creation? With a class across the seas? Why not? #cuechat
A2: I am still thinking this through but putting more of an emphasis on the classroom culture and being culturally aware and creating safe spaces for Ss to be who they are and feel free to make mistakes. #cuechat
We are working on that w/our Modern Learning Studios being prototyped - here’s some raw footage to try to show flexible arrangements - https://t.co/F3XbgVfjwI#CUEChat
A2: it’s weird. I LOVE classrooms and always feel excited about what happens there. At the same time...kinda depressing how they are all the same little boxes and walls. Big thinking would be great. Innovate the space. Blow it up. #cuechat
I don't have any data on if my statement is true, but I think we can make more changes to structure and safety plans if all kids belong to all Ts. #cuechat
As you all know if we are not all actively reflecting on our practices we will become obsolete. Using a global focus what are some of the things we need to scrub away from education? #cuechat
YES!!! All the students are all of ours. This is why I openly share resources and collect amazing peeps that do the same :) All in this together #Bettertogether#CUEchat
A2) I’m beginnng to appreciate the value of an uncluttered classroom, teachers curating charts online so EVERYONE has access and only current co-created charts abound #cuechat
A2: Redesign curriculum and classrooms to be collaborative forum for student discussion. Let the Ss lead the discussion make sense of their explorations especially when it comes to discovering math patterns and formulas #cuechat
I agree, while I am not a current teacher, I do help teach an after school mentoring program and in the classroom we use they have some active sitting chairs (I think they're called active learning stools for kids) and the kids seem to love them!Helps them focus too! #cuechat
Have you seen schools w/ villages/families? Once a week students meet w/ mixed grade teams w/a staff member for a learning experience. Great way to foster “all our students” culture #CUEChat
How about our cleaning bins? What cleaning products do we need to reconsider? What PD experiences are working well, and what things would do we need to reconsider or change for the better? #cuechat
A1: Edtech needs to be mandated throughout schools. We need to move away from textbooks, paper and pencil and copiers to open source ASAP for the benefit of the students #cuechat
Our school tends to be a lot this way already. I think it comes from being a small K-8 school so most of the teachers have the students in their class at some point. Me, I'm lucky and get to teach them all! #cuechat
A3: any type of forced PD, especially with technology. Teachers need to be ready for tech, and not "just next on the list for techPD" Our lives would be so much happier if we could let teachers come when they are ready. #cuechat
A3: Just like we want our Ss to be active learners, I learn better in sessions and participation in sessions I lead are better when they are more active, clean out the passive learning sessions/lessons #cuechat
How about our cleaning bins? What cleaning products do we need to reconsider? What PD experiences are working well, and what things would do we need to reconsider or change for the better? #cuechat
A2: Start with change in culture- that is the foundation. Everything else is dependent on that. Ex: flex furniture just becomes spectator seating if the culture is not a student centered, collaborative, safe and open one. #cuechat

I totally agree. How do we convince new/old/traditional/resistant to change Ts that when they do this for the first time Ss will resist heavily. They are conditioned to sit-n-git. #cuechat
Come visit San Diego and I’ll show you. Just had villages complete a (dis)ability project to celebrate differences. It was powerful and nice to see everyone learning together #CUEChat

a3 I'm finding successes now in small pockets as needs arise and when Ts are ready. These ideas almost always come from Ts seeing proof of concept of idea first #cuechat
A3: Forced and/or blanket PD doesn’t work. People have walls up- hard to get learning in. Teachers need choice and flexibility- just like our students. They should have a voice in their own PD as well- #cuechat

A3 Knowing your learning style matters. I need time to create what I am learning. Sit and get PD is no bueno. Empower me to empower my staff and students. #cuechat
A3: I think we need to give Ts a voice to see what they want to learn and then give them options and levels. Follow up with optional action steps and helpful resources so they can continue to learn as they wish at their pace. #cuechat
A3: Personally, I'd just like some kind of PD I don't have to pay for myself ... guess that's why I present (which is fun, too) & go to #edcamp when I can. #cuechat
Exactly, if charts aren’t relevant to students current work, need to be referred to or better students choose to go to them for clarification or ideas, then they really don’t exist for students. #cuechat
How about our cleaning bins? What cleaning products do we need to reconsider? What PD experiences are working well, and what things would do we need to reconsider or change for the better? #cuechat
A3: PD that has been successful is the Make n Take model - Ts learn new ideas and are given a template and TIME to create something to be implemented on MONDAY ! #cuechat

A3: I really want to see HIGH QUALITY Prof Long untethered from time and space. We have the tech to make awesome collaboration and innovation happen on demand and from the comfort of our chosen work environment. Let’s level up our PD game!! #cuechat
Dustin ... Strategic leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. #cuechat
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP .U.S. Army
I totally agree. How do we convince new/old/traditional/resistant to change Ts that when they do this for the first time Ss will resist heavily. They are conditioned to sit-n-git. #cuechat
So we started a volunteer, online collaborative PD based on misconceptions of fractions that has all of us planning, building, testing and resharing #cuechat
I know a guy. @dtorgerson he has this really cool company called @AlludoPlay and they are making this a better and better reality all the time! #cuechat

We need to walk along side of them- Change is a great fear inducer. Share our journeys to get there- successes & fails. Talk about our #switchflip moments #cuechat
Time to get personal. At your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you tried this year, or have been doing for years that you think may be time to retire? Why? #cuechat
Yes. We had some Ts say “Sa hate this”... well yes, they are being asked to think and be involved in their learning. They lost nap time. 🙄 They will get over it #CUEChat
A4: In AVID, Cornell Notes is a big focus. I have been trying to change that up this year by introducing #booksnaps & #sketchnotes as an option for them. #cuechat
A1 Need to scrub away textbooks, teaching 1 size fits all, teaching history solely from 1 groups perspective. replace w/ access to tech, to flatten walls, open doors to resources & people across nation/globe, emphasize cultural appreciation, benefit of multilingualism, #cuechat
A4: Nothing that I can think of, that's more because of the craziness the last couple of years has been, I have something really amazing on my horizon, not sure where I'm landing, but it's going to be great! #cuechat

A4: out of class for three years now, but back in the day (before I knew better) I relied on the photocopier for assignments. First- all that paper-ugh! Second, umm, digital! and Third- so many better ways of learning than worksheets! #cuechat

I was in AVID and I was not a big fan of the cornell notes. In fact, I actually left AVID because of them (this was in middle school). I think that if sketchnotes or booksnaps were enforced instead of cornell notes, then my experience might have been better. #cuechat
A4: Since I no longer have either- I will speak from the past. TIMED MATH TESTS GOTZ TO GO! I admit- I did them- but #knowbetterdobetter Number fluency isn’t a race & they do more harm than good. #cuechat
Time to get personal. At your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you tried this year, or have been doing for years that you think may be time to retire? Why? #cuechat
A4: It’s my 1st year at the school I’m at ... Year one is observe , make relationships and remember to GO SLOW to GO Fast. It’s killing me but I’m going slow it’s best for now. #cuechat
A4) Honestly, making job aids for everything, now we teach how to do what we do to learn something new, google, YouTube, ask colleagues, and just playwith it #cuechat
I always long to be more organized. I go through periods of clean and then piles and back and forth. Can't seem to keep up on all the office stuff! Don't really know what needs to change there. More time? #cuechat
a4 For me, the thing I'm letting go of is "holding back" be it in holding back from trying something on the spur of the moment or truth telling. I operate from #MyWhy and nothing else matters..and being ok with that #cuechat
Time to get personal. At your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you tried this year, or have been doing for years that you think may be time to retire? Why? #cuechat
My only advice is to stay dialed into this Twitter #edufamily#pln You will waste so much LESS time listening to this group, and will look like either a #kook or a #rockstar to your physical colleagues. #cuechat
A4: It’s my 1st year at the school I’m at ... Year one is observe , make relationships and remember to GO SLOW to GO Fast. It’s killing me but I’m going slow it’s best for now. #cuechat
Maybe use technology to your advantage? I have an iPad/ iPencil and I take notes on an app called notability and its not only helped me save paper, but it also helps me be a little more organized :) #cuechat
A2: Declutter the room and Defront the room. Create an environment that replaces a T centered(desks in rows) culture to Ss centered culture(pods, flex seating, more whiteboard space. Change to value all perspectives and encourage respectful discourse, collaboration. #cuechat
A4b: we can write a confessional on all "those horrible things we used to do" but u have to look back in order 2 go forward. Yeah I did some not smart things, yeah I had times I was the "lazy teacher." but I'm not that now, (announcer voice) and you too can be awesome! #cuechat
A4: Homework. I've never understood it's relevance to learning or exploration and I've officially stopped assigning it. I now offer learning opportunities, Ss self select what they need/want. #cuechat
And may I add- stay true to you. You know in your heart what is best for YOUR kids- Other teachers may do different- they have different kids. #cuechat
I only say it because I wasted too much time over the years listening to lame ideas or trying to comply with things that never gave me or my Ss anything back. #cuechat
I used to feel that the seating chart was a tool for classroom discipline. It's not. Good teaching and interesting lessons are better at discipline than seats ever were! #cuechat
A3 Survey Ts & Ss anonymously to REALLY find out what's working well & get an honest snapshot of your district/school/class culture. Be willing to have tough conversations, self-reflection, & put in work w/ the goal of improving learning experiences for Ss at forefront #cuechat
I keep very high expectations of my students like most educators.Instead of rushing them to complete their assignments quickly, I think I need to slow down a little and let them enjoy the process of learning a little more. #cuechat
In your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you have been wanting to do, or just learned about that you would like to try this spring or next fall? #cuechat
I challenge you to try none from Testing until the end of school. Then pay attention to your Ss attitudes and willingness to do good work for you! #cuechat
A4: This is a tough one because I add and delete every year. One thing I let go of this year is the remind app. Not all parents signed up. I found regular direct emails to all parents is working better #cuechat
A5: like @edcampOSjr said, a really anonymous and informative survey to make what we do more meaningful and worthwhile on the teacher training side. #cuechat
A5: I really want to try gamification. Still learning about all the components but I can see the use for voice and choice and personalization! #cuechat
In your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you have been wanting to do, or just learned about that you would like to try this spring or next fall? #cuechat
Jeremiah, businesses like Amazon are using drones and driverless cars to deliver goods. Our classrooms need to reflect these changes in business to stay relevant. #cuechat
In your school or in your classroom what is one thing that you have been wanting to do, or just learned about that you would like to try this spring or next fall? #cuechat
A2: as we look to replace e things on the classroom, ask the teachers what they need. My needs have always been different from my colleagues. That is my style to try something different. #cuechat
Let’s narrow the focus a little. Sometimes cleaning means looking at old fixtures or furnishings and deciding they need replacement. What are some big changes things we need to reconsider in classrooms specifically? #cuechat
A5: I want to create a newsletters for my parents that has more meaning than just a calendar. Solid resources that are tangible and relevant for them. #cuechat
A6: It is only by sharing our failures & struggles that we can inspire sustainable change in others. We must tell our stories! (Not that I have mastered this, but I'm working on it!) #cuechat
A6: Not profound BUT ... if you teach computer science or know someone who does, please think about coming to tomorrow night's #csk8 chat. We're Sliding For Home & would love to have you join us. #cuechat
My friend @BDicksonNV and I will be starting a podcast soon, keep an eye and ear out for that, especially if your idea of talking #education and #edtech with a beer is your thing! #cuechat
I would challenge people to use the Parts-Purpose-Complexities thinking routine to truly decide what is worth keeping around: https://t.co/cCSy8BTdzN#CUEChat
A5) Being part of an integrated coaching cycle, I’ve had the opportunity to really hone my math coaching skills...but I really want to try some integrations that teachers weren’t ready to take on...YET, #cuechat
A6: It is only by sharing our failures & struggles that we can inspire sustainable change in others. We must tell our stories! (Not that I have mastered this, but I'm working on it!) #cuechat
A6: The key to moving forwards to keep on moving . The moment we stand still in time - the tidal wave of change will sweep over us . Some will walk with us others may not but what’s important is we keep moving FORWARD! TU for a lovely evening #cuechat
A6: thankful for always learning new things from my PLN, and happy to be a part of this #cuechat this is one thing I'm glad I make time for and don't need to sweep away!
