Hi all! Really excited to help run this talk with @Emilyndennett. I have 3 kids in elementary school and am always interested in better ways to chat about math at home! #OCTMchat
Hope everyone is enjoying summer! Jodie Bailey - math coach @HilliardSchools & @ohioctm Pres-Elect. I loved being a part of #TMC18 this summer. So fortunate to have it in Cleveland! #octmchat
A1 My kids are constantly engaged in equal sharing tasks, particularly about things like number of minutes on the iPad, who got to pick the movie for family movie night, how many slices of pizza everyone got. #octmchat
A1: My bday was last month & we have a family joke that Thursdays are Opposite Day. My boys were wondering what age I’d be if I aged backwards a year every time my bday fell on a Thursday. Or if the digits reverse when bdays fall on Thursday. #octmchat
Hi, I'm not in Ohio (Connecticut), and am a parent with an incoming 4th grader who's been getting math interventions. So interested in hearing some of your insights. #OCTMchat
I've learned that kids think of equity differently than equality. They always keep in mind their friends who have dietary restrictions, to make sure they get more of something else. #octmchat
A2: I built this for our school families this summer. Not much traffic in the comments yet but I hear people are enjoying the weekly challenges. Hopefully helping families talk about math! https://t.co/RuW6Iiflyi#octmchat
Outside walk!! Playgrounds!! my cousins ( 3 and 5 years olds) start counting everything they see in the Park.. The questions become like:
“How many tree?” “How many steps?” “Who goes faster?” #octmchat
and we wondered how many were left un-cracked. Great example of an every day event turning into a good time to foster math questioning and discovery! #OCTMchat

A2 I am always engaging my kids in Equal Sharing tasks for Fractional Thinking, based on the tasks in Empson and Levi's book, "Extending Children's Mathematics: Fractions & Decimals: Innovations In Cognitively Guided Instruction" #octmchat
A2- I am a huge fan of making everything into a counter. The best part is that counters can be anything from marbles to oranges😂. Counters seem to really help Ss visualize the math! #OCTMchat
I see lots of resistance ( maybe it’s because of math anxiety) if I say “let’s do math, let’s talk math”.. it should be organic, authentic, real-life situation.. so my conversation start with ques “how can you help if I do this or that??” like
co-problem-solvers :) #octmchat
That was actually gonna be my answer to A4- I’d love to get more knowledgeable and comfortable with incorporating technology in my math conversations both at home with the kiddos I nanny and in my classroom! #OCTMchat
