Bonjour, Ellen! Welcome to !
-
Grade 2 teacher from Wadena joining.
-
-
that's okay - we have a great redo policy - we'll help you with that;)
-
A1: As a primary tchr, I have Ss do home reading, math fact practise, and occasional family home study as hwk
-
Hi Nicole. Thanks for stopping by!
-
A1.Remember back when we talked about GH and MS? It has transformed my HW this year. Home is where you study what you love.
-
-
Hi -I'm looking forward to tonight's conversation about the role of homework. Hope some students join chat 2nite
-
A1. Homework is a good practice tool and way to reinforce terms but there needs to be a point when it doesn't become too much
-
Great to see you, Amy! How is third year going?
-
I see why she's called "Sass." :)
-
Thanks for joining the conversation tonight!
-
-
Hi Lanny. Welcome to Enjoy and learn with us!
-
A1 HW is very purposeful. The idea of a flipped classroom is interesting. I find this teaching strategy useful.
-
-
-
Kiersten! Awesome to see you taking part in !
-
Hey Nicole! Good to see you!
-
Flipped classroom? Do tell!
-
Curren M.Ed student on mat leave. Work at Regina Huda School teaching High school math and Business classes.
-
How awesome! So glad you are with us.
-
-
A1: I think that homework should be more investigative and less practice focused, but I'm not sure to what extent or how much
-
Welcome Kiersten! Great to see you back! :) How goes third year?
-
Welcome! Just don't make eye contact, and keep your fingers on home row! :)
-
A1: If it has a purpose. I like the flipped classroom strategy as well. Homework in class, lessons outside of class.
-
Hi, I am Andrea from Regina. I am a learning resource teacher. I am trying to follow and edmoot tonight. Fairly new here.
-
A1 Hmwk. is useful but must be authentic in its use, otherwise is just a chore.
-
-
-
Is that 3 from 410? Best class representation ever! Welcome!
-
A1: Whether homework has a role in school depends greatly on your definition of homework. What does homework mean to you?
-
I've used it before! Still use it somewhat. Happy to share more any time.
-
A1: As once said "The only HW you give should be reading a book the student enjoys" outside of that, no.
-
I don't really know, but I've heard the men talk.
-
Sts do readings/learning prior to class then come to class prepared with questions and topics to discuss
-
Welcome to our prairie chat, Steven! Great to see you out at !
-
Third year is a whole new adventure! I'm loving everything it's brought so far and looking forward to Pre-internship
-
-
A1:As long as it has meaning, goes deeper than DOK 1 and relates to standard, and 1 of many ways to check for understanding
-
I'm with Ferrah on this, it all depends on how you define homework. Can look very diff in diff places https://t.co/kkx3Cr8bq5
-
-
A1: Whether homework has a role in school depends greatly on your definition of homework. What does homework mean to you?
-
are the readings pre-assigned? Does it resemble a University-styled seminar then?
-
what if the S hasn't grasped the concept yet? Then that HW is doing more harm than good.
-
A1: I think homework needs to be redefined. Ss need to learn responsibility but learning must authentic. Do these go together?
-
-
Ongoing practice where it fits into family schedule. I like this. How do you monitor...or is that necessary?
-
-
. A1: To me it's finishing up unfinished work that was given in class, usually due to misused time.
-
Yes, very similar! This allows sts to take control of their learning.
-
A1: once told me homework has a purpose if it increases speed or accuracy such as math facts or sight words.
-
-
A1 Learning can be happening all the time in and out of school. Homework could be so many things.
-
I like this. I think I'm still trying to figure out what my definition of homework is.
-
Reminder that on Jan27th at 8pm CST will host a focusing on Join them!
-
-
-
Agreed! A whole question could be what is homework and/or what is not homework!
-
Used it in highschool Math and STEM, Math 8 last year. And, Math 7 this year.
-
-
-
I think sts should be given choice with their learning in that sense.
-
How do we determine how much is too much? Vary by family & student? Some families reinforce homework practice.
-
Q1. Does homework still have a role in the classroom?
-
I agree! I think they should go together for sure.
-
-
Agreed. If authentic with real life connections, it can be awesome. Unfortunately, not really used this way.
-
-
A2. Homework is something they owe themselves. Task completion is something they owe me.
-
Good point. You can see what they are struggling with, then provide the tools to send them in the right direction
-
Great ?, I often think that it doesn’t always need to be monitored. Growth is seen in at school level
-
A2: in our school students can spend time at lunch completing "overdue" work with staff members who help instead of taking home.
-
I learned that too. Makes sense!
-
I'm joining late from here in Moose Jaw... did my homework for tonight's hey everyone!
-
A1: Only as a way to continue practice and exploration, not as an "assignment."
-
A1: Homework has a place but shouldn't be a punishment!
-
it does but what a way to destroy an upcoming question!
-
Has it's place, but can't be only thing you do. Like everything, needs to fit the needs of your Ss
-
Flipping seems useful. Wonder how to ensure that students are accessing pre-learning? https://t.co/UQWfXVFdPt
-
-
A1 HW is very purposeful. The idea of a flipped classroom is interesting. I find this teaching strategy useful.
-
Sounds great! Is this effective for students?
-
What grades have you tried this method with? Does it work well at all grade levels?
-
Just doing our best to mess everything up!
-
-
Welcome to the chat Ashley!
-
A1: What are we talking about?
https://t.co/5SwpJsEBF4
-
-
A1: Ss in 's personalized lear classrooms give themselves homework if they're not reaching their learning goals in class
-
at least you used A1 for the answer! ;)
-
they do. If the learning or task isn't authentic you aren't teaching responsibility, you're teaching compliance.
-
I try. I try. No one reads my tweets anyway!
-
It was an adjustment for some students, but once they adapted everyone seemed to jump on board.
-
A1 Families are busy... I try to focus on home reading and send home extra only when requested. Do what you can.
-
I might tend that way, but largely eschew assigning homework to my grade 4-5's these days.
-
A1: if homework adds to family strife & steals time for no real gain, it damages parent engagement!
-
A2: many factors at play here. If Ss have work overdue perhaps they weren’t engaged enough in initial task? How is this fixed?
-
Just like most things, it becomes apparent when they haven't. Follow up activities show those gaps
-
A2. The lines are getting blurred between homework & task completion.
-
-
Open line of communication with students and parents. Find out how they're doing with materials and move from there.
-
Agree...and sometimes we just aren't able to monitor it. Save yourself the time and stress!
-
Nice. Thoughts on reading logs and the like? My opinion changes constantly!
-
MakerSpaces, talked about them the same week as Genius Hour. Home is an opportunity for students to explore creation.
-
-
A2: Ss won't complete hwk unless it's meaningful/relevant. Love when Ss take work home when it's NOT hwk cuz they're excited.
-
Takes some adjustment - getting a routine is understandable.
-
I TOTALLY read them Ferrah!!!
-
- it could be - it might be! Maybe it is? So many possibilities coming up in
-
Q3. How can school leaders help teachers shift their concept of homework to be growth focused? https://t.co/5oxtm4at5u
-
Hate the notion of homework as busy work or punishment so the authenticity is def. important.
-
I avoid it as well. What's the purpose, to make them hate learning?
-
everyone reads your tweets! Even when you’re not here they tweet you!
-
A2 - To me, homework IS overdue task completion. But Ss should be given ample in-class time to work, first.
-
Absolutely. Let's talk sometime soon! I taught in the US, so curriculum isn't totally aligned, but a good start
-
-
I definitely find it intriguing. I certainly like the idea of bringing knowledge to a class
-
no - hence my push for WOW Thursdays :) Although tonight I'm also in the anniversary session.
-
Absolutely! Looking forward to it.
-
This is where I struggle. I don't assign homework but if you don't use your time, I expect you to finish at home.
-
I don't feel homework requiring monitoring is of particular benefit to students.
-
A3:Using Sports- Telling Ss that homework is like practice and the test is the game
-
-
I do the very same. At times ill talk to families suggest home reading one night & math games the next. https://t.co/cU8atkL6za
-
-
A1 Families are busy... I try to focus on home reading and send home extra only when requested. Do what you can.
-
just couldn’t do both - too much happening here in !
-
-
Mine too! I have them, but don't grade and track more for curiosity... I've changed it every year!
-
RT kwhobbes Reminder that on Jan27th at 8pm CST STARS_Regina will host a focusing on Join them! …
-
I feel the same way! But I do encourage students to learn new things at home and share in class!
-
A2: In my class, they're pretty much synonymous - the "extra" things are enrichment and to engage families as a whole
-
Thoughts? https://t.co/aV1MM9njaE
-
-
Homework is the arrogance of schools and teachers to think they can dictate what goes on in the homes of Ss and Ps.
-
Yes, and if it improves speed and accuracy - it works!
-
Q2: How does assigned homework and overdue task completion differ? Or do they?
-
-
My students love https://t.co/0KC3vn2gA8 for fact practice. They build it into their daily routine at home and are competitive!
-
A2: In MidYears, I don't assign homework ever. But at a certain point, no more class time can be given to a task.
-
Yes! Learning does not have to take place solely in the classroom. https://t.co/8XqecnQKYG
-
-
I feel the same way! But I do encourage students to learn new things at home and share in class!
-
When I was a student, HW was what you did when the lecture/notes ran long and you still had textbook Qs to finish
-
I use to keep parents connected. I offer questions they can ask at home to prompt engagement with the day's learning.
-
I try to make hwk a task instead of overdue so they have a + reason to engage. Ex. Bring black&white photo for art!
-
I'm posting those questions because I'm not seeing them. Is it just me?
-
Working families have about 3 hrs with their children...supper, activities, bathtime. Homework better be meaningful!
-
A3: Love seeing words like Authentic and Learning. Add Empower Students, Choices and Outcome Based, and we are cooking with gas!
-
-
thinking outside the industrial box is the best way to be a lifelong learner!
-
Inhave struggled with that too. Sometimes it meant me finding new ways for them to show learning.
-
Definitely see the value in that. Some families do it. Some don't. Challenge to "let go" for me.
-
Does that suggest learning is done once the test comes though?
-
-
A3. Student are going to make different amounts of growth through the year.Use homework to help the students feel more confident
-
I feel the same way. There has to be some reciprocity of effort.
-
A2: The homework I "assigned" was usually task completion.
-
This is the model I have in my classroom too. https://t.co/h73GM12W5F
-
-
This is where I struggle. I don't assign homework but if you don't use your time, I expect you to finish at home.
-
I like this. I'd like to set up easy-to-use "math bags" students can bring home when they're interested!
-
I would've appreciated this as a struggling math student years ago
-
I'm too far behind to see 3. :)
-
Powerful. I like to send my K's home with an idea to talk about rather than homework. But thats assumption again
-
Well said. How do you manage this in your classroom? Task completion is a big challenge for a handful of my Ss.
-
A1/2 - It’s all about learning - focused on Ss growth and development - tied to outcomes - not busy work/punishment or “do odds”
-
we have a "reading log" for literacy week. I think the data is largely creative.
-
Yes. I don't really run into this with my little guys, but had this struggle in middle yrs.
-
-
And all too often this does not occur.Ts then frustrated b/c always reteaching instead of moving forward. https://t.co/l3slDiQxe4
-
-
This is the model I have in my classroom too. https://t.co/h73GM12W5F
-
-
This is where I struggle. I don't assign homework but if you don't use your time, I expect you to finish at home.
-
Pinterest and Teachers Pay Teachers made my life so much easier to be able to send “math bags” home!
-
things seem to be coming out of order for me.
-
A3: school leaders should encourage HW to serve a purpose and be meaningful. Should show growth and be a place for mistakes.
-
I struggle to called those things "homework". They're not work. They're learning. Hopefully, enjoyable too.
-
Yes - this is it! It's a struggle I know I'll be going through in a few years. Family time is so important too!
-
-
True. Those who don't put in the extra effort demonstrate this in evidence of learning.
-
Absolutrly, the discussion of taking ownership of ones learning definitely applies here.
-
I like this - a learning incentive sort of deal.
-
Time is a big factor. Students should do work outside of class time when they have to practice a skill for mastery
-
Are you showing off that you were at ISTE?
-
I have the same response. It's great when they choose to pursue/continue something personally and share it
-
Homework has had a negative connotation over the years. How do we make it something students aren't upset with?
-
-
Assessment is the accountability factor for students; learning happens whether we assess or not. https://t.co/F4ou1dBdcS
-
-
Does that suggest learning is done once the test comes though?
-
What does a "math bag" look like? I like the idea, trying to picture it at my grade level.
-
Task doesn't always mean Learning Outcome. If Ss are learning at their own pace, time is irrelevant. https://t.co/MDWuwDyNKd
-
-
This is the model I have in my classroom too. https://t.co/h73GM12W5F
-
-
This is where I struggle. I don't assign homework but if you don't use your time, I expect you to finish at home.
-
Learning the concept can be done in many ways. It doesn't just have to be completing a sheet.
-
I don't believe so, in most subjects that is the foundation to go onto the next standard
-
Also use with families. It definitely increases completion of any hwk task assigned!
-
I think that's respecting their time as a family unit though. They would be having meaningful convo. Not filling time
-
Wow! This chat tonight is just ZOOMING! I can't keep up!
-
I schedule "Bonus Time" a few times a week before or after school. Ss not mandated to attend but it is offered.
-
my students love practicing math on Prodigy while they are at home. prodigy https://t.co/AI1FVNnQwq - it's like pokemon math
-
Q4. Finding out if students are taking in the materials and understanding the concepts
-
A3 - As an admin - I discouraged homework - encouraged more FA, classwork, shift away from lecture - PBL/Inquiry -
-
Agreed! It's more 'work done at home' https://t.co/upMpOGFI08
-
-
I struggle to called those things "homework". They're not work. They're learning. Hopefully, enjoyable too.
-
-
haha, I was not. Had to attend through the tweets of others!
-
Agreed. My thinking is struggling to keep up with all the awesomeness. Don't want to miss anything.
-
Couldn't agree more. I think HW is important but it is so crucial that it be meaningful! https://t.co/hqsapmC101
-
-
Working families have about 3 hrs with their children...supper, activities, bathtime. Homework better be meaningful!
-
I put explanations for games & provide the materials that I can. Games focus on skills that need practice.
-
A few tools (dice, cards), a task card or two, set up like a game, 10 minutes of fun... in my brain!
-
I like the idea that students use the time they need after school to complete what they need from the day
-
We talk & talk & talk & talk about this but same culprits every time. Just don't finish.
-
-
Love this! I find my Ss need individualized hwk at times to grow and feel this confidence!
-
that’s what we’ve been doing for a while!
-
Doh! I had blocked!!! Sigh. I teach technology.
-
-
-
I do rotations at the middle school level. This lets me have 1 on 1 time with my students, for guidance and tracking
-
I am in the same boat! Will definitely have to go back after to catch all the convos!
-
A4 as a teacher and parent, I would like homework to be things like reading and math practice.
-
A1: French Immersion homework also leads to a bunch of frustrated Ss and Ps. Definitely find it harder to do with 2nd language!
-
I use a "Fun Friday" system to motivate Ss to complete work in time provided. Almost all students finishing in class.
-
Drink the Tweetdeck Kool-Aid !
-
A4 - that’s why I started using wikis years ago - individualized with ability to give feedback - now much easier with GAFE -
-
I 100% agree! Until S is 8 assignments behind & nothing works. Then, sorry, it needs to be home time not mine.
-
I agree! I am on the fence even about sending home a reading bag.
-
Power of 10 cards/games is a great/easy way to send home math support
-
Ss need to understand why it's assigned. Find ways to make practice fun, Involve real life questions or problems.
-
I've got some teachers on that as well.
-
we've all thought of doing it...😛
-
I think this is mostly true of high school where time is more critical.
-
Yes. Again, if it improves speed and accuracy, it is good and it works.
-
Hopefully hw is an extension of learning based on interest of students
-
Do what we can to help them be successful. If it means more work for us at the time so be it, progress is amazing
-
Absolutely!I discourage homework without purposeful need 4 parental involvement at elementary level. https://t.co/vFOlgUSLDT
-
-
A3 - As an admin - I discouraged homework - encouraged more FA, classwork, shift away from lecture - PBL/Inquiry -
-
Definitely my experience as a student. I was the kid that didn't care though because I liked homework.
-
"Fun Friday" sounds way more, uh, fun than my "Finish Up Friday." ;)
-
I may need to do this too!
-
Still on first half-gla- uh, TWEET.
-
A4 - I see HW in two ways: As overdue-task completion, and as an opportunity of Ss to practice their learning.
-
is my lifesaver. The chat aspect is useful too when kids or parents have questions.
-
So true! Parents are always so nervous to put their child in French K anyway, I don't want to scare them off!
-
A4. got away from ‘homework’ years ago - tied to outcomes, PBL, FA, Inquiry. Learning is driven by Ss choices
-
What? Other people liked homework too?
-
What ages/grades is this used for? Primary?
-
-
Giving a reason for it is definitely a must. I like the idea of real life questions
-
A4:I feel like it is another check for understanding, you can use it as a formative assessment and check my effetiveness
-
Have you shared a resource yet during tonight's ? Please take a moment to share with the rest of the participants!
-
Wondering what you do with overdues that never turn up. My MIA board has items for another T from Sept.
-
Can't always guarantee student interest, but it's up to us to make the necessary connections to Ss. https://t.co/E39VION8CZ
-
-
Hopefully hw is an extension of learning based on interest of students
-
-
A4.1: Where homework slips into my student's lives, its junk like memorizing the times tables.
-
That's a really great concept!
-
yeah, I blocked myself a while back too!
-
sometimes my homework is just, "bring some news to class tomorrow" I love when they make their own meaningful discussions.
-
A4: I see it as a place for students to determine strengths and weaknesses through practice.
-
I wonder about this whenever we talk about putting any kiddos in... it'll be learning all around!
-
Became clear when I became a parent. I actually resent homework for my kids(gr.3 and 4). I HATE reading logs!
-
if it's getting out of hand I assign Ss to our lunch program called "PILOT" after chatting with parents.
-
-
Yes, and can be great bellwork. Authenti, real world connections.
-
I agree, Task Completion for Assessment reasons. Or do we need to find alternative ways of assessment? https://t.co/p46tn5anpW
-
-
A4 - I see HW in two ways: As overdue-task completion, and as an opportunity of Ss to practice their learning.
-
To keep yourself sane, invest in the quiet foam dice!
-
A5:Homework that goes deeper than level 1 and makes the S think about the standard, and something relevant/current to today
-
I've missed Q3 and I think I might have written the Q but don't remember it!
-
Joining in late! Kailyn here the UofR! A4: certain assigned homework can show how Ss apply their learning to their daily life
-
Me too Ferrah! If we get angry, imagine the already disillusioned parent. https://t.co/zrDZby55Xc
-
-
Became clear when I became a parent. I actually resent homework for my kids(gr.3 and 4). I HATE reading logs!
-
. letter about . Great explanation!
-
A5. Qualities of effective homework: tasks to help students reapply knowledge and push it further
-
Which emoji is the "I'm being sarcastic" one?
-
Yes and 2nd language learning should be as natural as possible.
-
mine occasionally work on Mathletics at home. Such activities are great.
-
A5. In a perfect world effective homework would be individualized and adapted for each student.
-
I agree! I FA all the time! FA with the Ss and with staff. If we didn't have FA, what would we have? https://t.co/TOtbAIh69E
-
-
A4. got away from ‘homework’ years ago - tied to outcomes, PBL, FA, Inquiry. Learning is driven by Ss choices
-
A5: Something students can complete w/o a lot of guidance. Allows for skill development & practice. Meaningful & not overkill.
-
Agreed. See no value in them. Kids who read with read. Kids who don't will fudge it.
-
I really do find engaging Ss at home does help with seeing progress. More work yes, but we get the end result!
-
I most definitely did not fall into that category
-
-
Well look who showed up. Awesome you are here!
-
What's FA? https://t.co/TOtbAIh69E
-
-
A4. got away from ‘homework’ years ago - tied to outcomes, PBL, FA, Inquiry. Learning is driven by Ss choices
-
that link was actually . A student publicly blogged a private post created at home.
-
world connections are great, but sometimes family news is great too! I'm surprised by what they choose to share
-
-
Is hw a student, teacher or parent choice?
-
A3: First, ask WHY they assign homework. Is it just to generate more "work" or things for "marks" or what?
-
Those are a fantastic invention. I actually misplaced mine last week, minor panic moment!
-
-
My frustration is sometimes not enough data to assess with incomplete work. Sometimes the non-compliance gets me.
-
The end result is what we work so hard for. All the progress through the process gives us an amazing product
-
I like to send “what if scenarios home with grade 12 Ss and have them discuss with Prts & bring back feedback.
-
Yes, absolutely right. We found that as homework dwindled, learning expanded: https://t.co/CNNkgKjEMO https://t.co/mfU8rmehgl
-
-
A4. got away from ‘homework’ years ago - tied to outcomes, PBL, FA, Inquiry. Learning is driven by Ss choices

A5: Do we support parents in helping students w/HW? As a teacher I know how, but non-educators can't be expected to have skills.
-
I read this as "Ferrah Graham is frustrating definitely!" True. True.
-
I admit, the little e-mail notifications I get that say "your students spent ____ minutes on math" warm my heart
-
My feelings exactly. Must be meaningful and students along with families must see the value. https://t.co/dkh33olbeQ
-
-
I really do find engaging Ss at home does help with seeing progress. More work yes, but we get the end result!
-
I call the family news real world to. Great discussions can happen with Ss.
-
It's delicious! I love it!
-
A4: Homework can allow Ss to explore, and find their weaknesses, so they know what questions to ask. .
-
Stretches Ps and Ss PLUS gets them talking about stuff they might never discuss otherwise! https://t.co/L2kyKqdshE
-
-
I like to send “what if scenarios home with grade 12 Ss and have them discuss with Prts & bring back feedback.
-
or it comes after Mee and before Lo! Whatever works for your classroom -
-
I do use a reading log. Ss are motivated to read to achieve goals-lunch w/ teacher, choose new book, etc.
-
haha, glad you asked. What I'm thinking can't possibly be it!
-
Love this! https://t.co/uBtWWoTIaL
-
-
A5. In a perfect world effective homework would be individualized and adapted for each student.
-
ah! you are their reward :D
-
A4: Honestly my only purpose for homework is task completion when opp. for class time are exhausted. https://t.co/4awhdf5VWn
-
I get that frustration. Why do you think there is non compliance?
-
yes - FA is Formative Assessment or the sound between Mee and Lo - whatever works in your classroom.
-
lots of Ss use it even when not assigned! They know they have hockey/dance/drama and want 2 maximize time.
-
Between xtra cur, bus travel time and basic home chores I like to limit homework and let lived cur take place
-
definitely real world! I was considering your tweet from more of a local > national > world point of view.
-
How the hell am I 9 minutes behind! A new record!
-
No. Th non-compliance is defin. frustrating is what I meant. My bad. :)
-
Do you accept no as an answer from the S? If not then it's a teacher choice.
-
Hit'n'miss. Other than Pittsburg Steelers tix, NOTHING would get my 10 yr old doing his reading log! https://t.co/s6xlLqzrUe
-
-
Its the logs that are so frustrating as a tch too. It's always the same Ss reading at home. Are the incentives worth it?
-
So true. And that's how we get and other similar ideas!
-
Need to change dialogue esp. with Ps. Often Ps have diff. def'n than we do. Comm. re: purpose needed.
-
-
Sorry can't join in tonight. Long busy day and still have things to do. Will catch up later. Have a great weekend!
-
It's interesting that HW is synonymous with assessment. HW can be an opportunity for Ss to practice their learning.
-
Bribery is underrated. :)
-
As a product of French Immersion Education I say the same to my ss and Ps.
-
Agreed. And it is one of the least certain and most tenuous assessments.
-
you could roll your eyes?
-
that’s why it’s important to read in class & let Ss find their niche - comic books are okay!
-
A4: Frustrated when Ts use homework as punishment or "I'll talk all class then give them this work 2 mins before bell."
-
-
How do we help Ps see homework in the new direction we want to take it?
-
-
I have a few Ss that are this way too. Still trying to figure out what will motivate them.
-
I am liking the number of staff I am seeing on
-
I don't accept no but . . . student/parent buy in is critical
-
I see what you did there! I'll be stuck with this all night now.
-
🙄like such? I don't like my options for sticking tongue out.
-
"Lived cur" - love this. We can't undervalue it.
-
We created some for all families at our school. Not sure my Ss ever touch them though.
-
Yes, I'm just that loved! You would also be amazed what kids do to "sit in the teacher chair" for a day
-
Walter, are you smoking the idealist hedge again?
-
That's why I think it should be something students can do mostly on their own but can gain from more practice.
-
Wooo hoooo! is humming tonight. Some great convo folks! Great work!
-
with no homework is assessed - none. It’s all practice but can be used to help demonstrate growth
-
Without I'd have way less parent follow through on overdue tasks.
-
I agree. When homework is relevant and @ strategic times,it can engage Ss interests into whats going on in the world
-
I don't have a teacher chair... just one like theirs. I try to make my space disappear.
-
I only send to those that benefit from the extra practice & touch base with home and Ss prior.
-
For Ss who struggled with timelines, I spent noon hours w/them. Tried to make it welcoming
-
Whatever works! Then you trick them into "Fun Fri" being math games.
-
you’re so welcome! It’s a gift my wife tells me!
-
I am more of a Kool-Aid guy :)
-
Meaningful HW is a "Long Long Way To Run" without Ss buy in. No retention, no connection, no learning. https://t.co/Jc1Cm4An0T
-
-
I see what you did there! I'll be stuck with this all night now.
-
What is the grade level? I've seen them used in various ways, some more meaningful than others.
-
Do you have them as by-request or do you send them home?
-
isn't demonstrating growth a form of assessment? We assess "for", "as" , and "of" learning.
-
Our next topic on is Blogging as a Professional. Join us to share your ideas and insights about blogging as a teacher!
-
A6: be aware of difference. Adapt to ensure all students have the same resources if possible.
-
A5: "Effective homework" has to be real. It has to help students make connections or deeper understanding.
-
Great, I got rid of my desk last year for a horseshoe table. Game changer-great for guided rdng and math
-
Agreed! Which is why using instructional videos to support Ss can be such a great tool
-
Agreed. Even at the university-level HW/assignments shows me areas where I need to improve. https://t.co/tbo3r6EIhH
-
-
A4: Homework can allow Ss to explore, and find their weaknesses, so they know what questions to ask. .
-
Nice! I LOVE blogging! Thanks to and for "forcing" me to do it it's now a fave pastime.
-
-
A5: Something that the student is better for doing. More knowledgeable/skilful/confident/whatever.
-
-
I send them home, have parents come in to go through package if they feel want more explanation.
-
-
this is the hardest! "Research at home" is a vibe killer when someone can't :(
-
Can always have two deadlines. PowerSchool date and a month later due date. Keeps students looking at their grades constantly
-
Crap. Now I'll have to start.
-
I love when my homework shows me new areas to explore!
-
homework should never be assessed. Don't care how smart dad is.
-
Forcing sounds so mean...
-
-
I'm thinking about giving up the teacher desk next week. My hands are shaking though...
-
Me too! Loving the change, although some days it just allows for more clutter room… oops. https://t.co/JYPLW5ZSCK
-
-
Great, I got rid of my desk last year for a horseshoe table. Game changer-great for guided rdng and math
-
We're moving in that direction in our continuous intake online school. Ss set timelines/goals
-
When my daughter brought homework home on water usage in the house, she did it, asked great Qs = meaningful!
-
Q7. How can schools/teachers address the wide-variety of parental expectations about homework? https://t.co/F1ox3jw6TN
-
-
very true; I still have a bigger footprint in the room than my students.
-
Yes-and getting rid of the huge amount of what we don't actually need
-
-
Ever-so-subtly enticed? :)
-
Rephrase: Encouraging me to blog and making it a course requirement? Haha!
-
had teachers give it up 5 yrs ago-didn’t look back. Haven’t had one for years
-
That's why I like a flipped classroom. Video lessons out of class HW in class so I can help when needed.
-
THIS is the question! Always trying to figure it out. (Not normally a compliance freak but ,,,)
-
Q7. Discuss your expectations with the Ps on homework and find out what theirs are. Be on the same page for successful education
-
We as well. Somebody should mention it to gov. policy makers....
-
. I recommend following for more on !
-
Sorry folks, have to step out a little early tonight. Great discussion again tonight, have awesome an Friday everyone
-
Agreed. When it is treated as an opportunity and not a punishment, they appreciate it.
-
A7: Communication about Ss learning goals, timelines and Outcomes makes everyone accountable. A surprised P is an unhappy one.
-
I have never regretted getting rid of mine. My space is much more useable now for everyone
-
that’s what makes portfolios so great - continuous learning with Ss choice/direction
-
Or checking in the home for where products come from
-
Communication is always key in successful learning
-
I've never heard of this one!
-
A7: Talk to parents. Get on the same page. Adapt to different expectations if possible.
-
I use occ. during math centers. I create easy usernames and passwords and some ss choose to play while at home.
-
Do this too. Before, after school, evening accessibility too. Sometimes still isn't enough.
-
Me 2 - Tchrs using "in-class flipped" model where videos are used as support when needed. Not necessarily homework
-
A7: we have to remember many Ps compare this school experience to their own. Ps often need to be educated about the changes.
-
A7:Constant communication with Ps,email, smore, building a relationship I don't know of any P that wants to see their child fail
-
There is a big difference between assessment and grading. We can assess HW without grading
-
-
I had no idea what I was in for! It took my tech-curiosity to all new levels.
-
A7: And essential to P and T relationships. If those break down, HW or no, it makes for a long year. https://t.co/EB0DX3LjGy
-
-
Communication is always key in successful learning
-
-
find a bookshelf - with doors - you only can put things in there - give yourself parameters. Really helped our Ts
-
-
I would love to try our "math game nights". Have any of you done this?
-
My second window is 7 minutes behind...oy.
-
-
we all need a home base it seems.
-
When I'm only on Q5...so behind tonight!
-
DO IT... best thing I did... you'll feel so free! Take before and afters!
-
it’s why I started using wikis years ago - allowed me to individualize
-
A6: Homework shouldn't require that. If resources needed, must be available. (Oh, you meant in the real world...)
-
Assess the Snot out of them. Grade them back into the Stone Age! https://t.co/fTNpikNkg7
-
-
There is a big difference between assessment and grading. We can assess HW without grading
-
Where do you put your important papers? Do you still have special teacher pens/sticky notes?
-
and look at you now! Doing awesome stuff online!
-
Did this with in Estevan and went fairly well!
-
Most of MIA board is for another class/teacher yet as homeroom T, I work hard with Ss on it.
-
some are really tough to convince. Self motivation may not be there, support offered is a start
-
I believe change is in the air.
-
I need to do this! https://t.co/T1BUruIRte
-
-
find a bookshelf - with doors - you only can put things in there - give yourself parameters. Really helped our Ts
-
Kendra is a blog expert! She helped me set mine up for . :)
-
Meaningful and relevant, great example of homework leading to good conversation and critical thinking
-
-
still have issues with flipped - expecting Ss to watch it out of class. Esp in rural.
-
I reply and 30 messages are in the queue... I love it!
-
Levelling is another option
-
-
-
Well pour a second "tweet" for me since I can't make it to tonight.
-
2 desks in my room(1 with desktop comp & 1 for preservice Ts) but they are open access.
-
it’s really helped when we visualized what the classroom might look like during various activities/times of year
-
A7: put the onus back on them. Parents asking for homework get helpful suggestions for organizing it themselves.
-
-
A7: Homework shouldn't be assigned to meet Prnts expectations. What do they know? :) Parent ed might be needed
-
A7: "Well when I was in school..." Yes but these are 21st century Ss with different curricula, expectations, connections, etc.
-
Q8. Depends on your learning environment and what is happening in your classroom. If it helps reinforce concepts, yes
-
-
YES! https://t.co/aPN7Vi6HuA
-
-
A7: "Well when I was in school..." Yes but these are 21st century Ss with different curricula, expectations, connections, etc.
-
-
see! I pay attention in staff meetings!
-
That homework makes sense.
-
mine is much the same way. The need for an AV centre keeps it alive.
-
well in rural we had Ss with no high speed & dialup didn’t work. There are ways but what about equity?
-
what happens to your fancy teacher chair?
-
Good option 4 Ss who want challenge & want to move through content more quickly
-
-
A7: Comm. is key with parents. Ongoing & clear. Try to remember that Ps are doing their best too. Be zenful when frustrated.
-
Small stand with pens, notes, etc. Laptop on small ind. desk behind with day book. Rest gone!
-
-
A sounds like a thing that we need! Bloghub required!
-
A7.2: I tell them to read at home, log onto learning games, support ongoing themes, etc.
-
okay, so you still have your "spaces" they are just more dispersed throughout the room
-
there are many options for individualizing but we tend to find “a solution” and stick to it.
-
U-Table battle station... little bookcase on the side.
-
Join for on Jan 27 8pm CST to discuss such an important topic!
-
A7. Give parents fun ideas/activities to enhance their children's learning! Communication is golden!
-
Table at back of room with "stuff" that is freely used by whomever needs it. Comm. materials.
-
We teach students where they are at, and we should include Parents, and meet them where they are at. https://t.co/bW7opXNPTg
-
-
Good option 4 Ss who want challenge & want to move through content more quickly
-
Those plastic drawers are great to put under the end of U table
-
Exactly! You trade your old space for a new space.
-
Communication and adaptation seems to be a big take away from tonight
-
for parts of outcomes had Ss devise their own learning - they shared with rest - negotiated assessment
-
Thanks for the great chat. Twitter is acting up tonight, tired of fighting it, going to check out a bit early.
-
yes... Alan is never sarcastic... (gulp)
-
Think about if we used this line as Ts!
-
-
Got caught up, now 6 behind. Too many keeners here! :)
-
Lame. https://t.co/VkVu0VGlXF
-
-
Thanks for the great chat. Twitter is acting up tonight, tired of fighting it, going to check out a bit early.
-
Is there hw in or just learning at the students choice of time?
-
in fact, with access to info - at school - giving Ss options allows for multi-faceted learning & growth
-
Not seeing that being as big of a factor now with Smartphones but that does depend on age of Ss for sure
-
A8: yes if it's meaningful & relevant, or it increases speed & accuracy skills (ex. building blocks of math and literacy).
-
There will be an archive of later tonight so you can access resources and revisit the great discussion!
-
Agreed. Providing multitude of options for support. Hard to change motivation
-
-
too many assumption that ppl have certain technologies based on privilege - many Ss don’t have access

You have no idea how many times I had to change my # to from . Sacked hat? Really? Auto correct is the worst.
-
Doing that now to some extent: some finishing earlier, some not at all; many are "on track"; some upgrade to catch up
-
-
Thanks for the fantastic thoughts and discussion tonight Always new tools to consider with the developing teaching world!
-
Wow! It's been a wild ride tonight folks!! Thx...have an amazing week! Now that my Steelers r out,
-
-
Checking out a few minutes early tonight. Thanks for the great chat, ! I love learning & collaborating with all of you. :)
-
I know, I know! and if you make an error
-
same here! Plus a book shelf I guess.
-
You're drinking 's hedge, or smoking his Kool-AID Seriously, I hope so more than anything in ed
-
You recruit the army, I'll build the hub!
-
Giving Ss choice in path (level) of learning: basic, comprehensive, thorough.
-
Def. see purpose in grades 1-2 & then w/Ss who need extra.
-
Thank you for joining the discussion on Homework! We appreciate you taking the time to share with us! https://t.co/ckLE2tu65u
-
awesome chat tonight, everyone! I can always count on you to inspire <3 We should in person sometime!
-
Always last guy to party, but I've been reading & catching on your chat.
-
-
Deal. We want YOU students to be in the !
-
Well that was a wild hour! Will take me another hour to read through all the tweets. Enjoy your evening!
