Every other Monday, thousands of physical educators from around the world take part in an online Twitter chat on topics relating to #physed. The community votes for the topic and community members moderate the chat. The result is an amazing professional development opportunity called #PEChat.
My name is Joey. I teach here in Montreal, 🇨🇦 at @StGeorgesMTL. I was teaching outside in the beautiful winter weather today. My G1/G2/G3 student just finished units, so we got to play Snowman Blitz (I’ll be sharing the game later). #pechat
Thanks! Depends on the outcomes involved. Anywhere from 3-6 lessons. We’re also playing games because I’m not starting new units until after the break. #pechat
A1. Here’s how @terridr99 answered this question on the latest podcast episode of The #PhysEd Show (Turn the audio on to hear the clip!) You can find the full episode here: https://t.co/Wct579HCfY#pechat
A1. Rick Stiggins (@RStiggins) goes on further by putting it this way: AFL is a constant cycle between a student/teacher knowing where the student is going, where they are, and how they close the gap. #pechat
A1. I think assessment for learning is more for the Ss and Ts to make sure that the Ss are on the right path in their learning journey. Assessment of learning is at the end of the lesson or unit to see if the Ss have met the goals that were set. #PEChat
A1. Rick Wormeli explains the difference between AFL and Assessment OF Learning in this video. #pechat (Psst: @rickwormeli2, I know you’re at a conference, but feel free to join in!) https://t.co/qu8Gq1hYGp
A1 it can be used in a number of ways. You can even let Ss choose how they want to show the learning. Blog post, podcast, rap, short story, poem, drawing, etc. #PEChat
So many acronyms, Joey! Are you in education or something?! AFL is ongoing. It happens every day, both formally and informally. AOL allows Ss to determine what they know/understand/are able to do by the end of a unit. #pechat
Q2: Now that we have a better picture of what assessment FOR learning is, why do you (or don’t you) believe that AFL is an essential part of teaching and learning? #pechat

Assess of learning could be more of a specific answer to a question whereas assess for learning could be where Ss transfer it into their understanding like an essential question. #pechat
A2 I believe it is essential because we need to know and our Ss need to know where they are in their learning. If we as Ts just take the temperature of the class and move at one certain pace then some will be left behind. #PEChat
A2. This of it this way: If the physical literacy/standards/grade-level outcomes are your students' True North, Assessment FOR Learning is the compass that helps get them there. #pechat
A2 AFL is vital to the learning process. In HS, I teach my ss how to self assess/refelct daily. We discuss how it helps us plan for next steps. #pechat
A2. It helps guide students’ thinking, actions, and goal-setting along with teachers’ planning, teaching, and feedback. In a lot of ways AFL **IS** teaching. How could we ever ignore it!? #pechat

A2 Ss don’t know what they don’t know. By AFL they can begin to explore individual qualities (where is their fitness level and what can they do about it and what can they just manage) #pechat
A3 It promotes reflection to get better each day. Can identify which groups of students may need extra intervention in a small group while others are engaged in PA. #pechat
A4: Specifically, I like to use entrance tickets (which I call Tickets to Play) or exit slips...walk & talks with partners/small groups...doodling on a Post-it...and I often ask questions on the fly. #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy One focuses on providing students with a clear picture of where they are going. This starts with YOU having a clear picture of where you are taking them. #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy Two focuses on providing Ss with examples of strong/weak work so that they can analyze those examples and reflect on what makes each one strong/weak. #pechat
A4 For cognitive assessments, my students use their iPad at the end of class to take a GForm MC assignment based on the standard and teaching point. Also have a PE literacy question or two. #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy Three focuses on offering students regular descriptive feedback. This starts with an understanding of where the student is at in their learning. #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy Four focuses on teaching students how to self-assess and set goals. Don’t assume they know how to: just like any other skill, you must teach them #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy Five focuses on designing lessons that don’t focus on too much. Don’t overwhelm students: start lean and build knowledge/skill/understandings from there #pechat
A4. AFL Strategy Six focuses on teaching students focused revision. Get them reflecting on their work and help them push themselves to keep growing. #pechat
Sport Education Seasons are another example. Students get to celebrate and share what they enjoyed about the process through a huge final jamboree. #pechat
Currently, I’m editing a video of my G3’s dance choreographies (they all danced to the same song, so I’m making a music video). Including clips of the practices/discussions that led to the final versions. #pechat
I also use off-campus activities as a way of celebrating. Example: in my Striking/Fielding unit we went to a local baseball diamond to play. Had a review on how far we had come to be able to play an actual competitive game as a class #pechat
But I guess the biggest thing are my student portfolios: students get to see what they looked like at the start of the unit and compare to where they are at the end. #pechat
I definitely need to add more celebrations. I struggle with finding the balance between what students think it fun/cool and too goofy. My pickleball tourney champs got giant pickles this year and it was a hit! #pechat

Sarah..your pickle idea inspired me to do: “fun, food & friends”. Smoothie parties and extra activity time at end of the month for 2-4 Kids per classroom #pechat

A5. Sharing/having that clear vision of the learning target starts with a proper unpacking of your outcomes. Learn more about that here: https://t.co/5x3dJx4jFU#pechat
A5: I have had my students creating "highlight" videos at the end of each sport unit as their culminating assessment. The teams video each other playing a game or two and then the next period we edit the videos into highlights of the skills we focused on. #pechat
That's awesome! I was inspired by my colleague @debrasbaker, who hosted an optional writing contest for her Ss. The stories had to include 3 mandatory things, including a watermelon slice. The winning author got a watermelon! #pechat
A5. As for providing examples of work, setting up an Anchor Portfolio can go a long way in helping with this. I talk about my student portfolios here: https://t.co/jkXuxCLfUY#pechat
@superdanpe I did tell students not to open the pickles at school. Unfortunately one of them exploded and got pickle juice all over @debrasbaker's classroom! #pechat

A5 I'd like to do online portfolios, but I'm not sure if I'd like to have my Ss create websites with G suite or blogs with blogger. I teach HS. What would you suggest? #PEChat
Hey Joey! #pechat Screencasting is an excellent way to provide feedback to students, and for students to express their analysis of their learning via their portfolios.
