Happy hump day ! Todays topic: What is your best classroom management tip for cell phones/laptops in the classroom?
Yesterday morning conversation was about balance...I tried for that with my pancake greeting this morning! 😄😄😄
Good morning my ! Welcome to Wednesday! Hope everyone is having a great week!
that means your upright, it's a start!
me too! Excited to try a new strategy
Good morning! Sierra, special ed major.
Good morning, my friend! How are you?
good morning to you...have missed have just about finished my Wednesday...hope you have a good one:)
this is going to be a 3 cups of coffee day.
We don't have cell phones in grade 3 yet, so I will just be lurking! https://t.co/VBh3VxvOIO
Happy hump day ! Todays topic: What is your best classroom management tip for cell phones/laptops in the classroom?
Good morning! Happy to be with you all this morning!
What are you going to drink after 9 am then?
If phones/laptops are not needed, have charging stations. https://t.co/bRuZ43Nc6k
Happy hump day ! Todays topic: What is your best classroom management tip for cell phones/laptops in the classroom?
Good morning! Happy Wednesday
Not feeling well or just tired?
School wide we did 3 zones this yr. Red, yellow, green. Red=NO, Yellow=use w/caution, green=free to use them
Good morning!! Another hot day here in VA
Good morning ! Stacey from NJ. Sad I missed yesterday but excited to be here this lovely Wednesday morning!
We went 1:1 last week. Im sure that over the year I will learn many answers to this question.
I haven't seen cell phones but I think a good, solid, stable charging station for laptops and tables it huge. Lots of cable ties.
good morning Sierra! How far into your degree are you?
Good morning ... Mark here from Estes Park, CO. Let's get the party started.
Interesting topic today! I hope to get good strategies that i can share. At my elementary school, we don't deal much with phones.
Good morning from Massachusetts.
Brian, HS principal
I have to be constantly circulating when they are in use, and be very strict they are turned off/closed when not.
Many set clear expectations for laptops in class from day 1 with excellent results of S use of integrated tech
Good morning friends. Steve from NJ here.
I let Ss use them & model appropriate use. They need practice https://t.co/IXMMjmP7Pj
Happy hump day ! Todays topic: What is your best classroom management tip for cell phones/laptops in the classroom?
Anyone tried "phone check breaks" Stats say avg time people check phone before putting away is 30-45sec. Give ss that then move on
Halfway through my junior year.
We don't allow cell phones but are 1:1 with devices. No problems thus far as Ss have had for a few years.
Good morning ! Checking in while the coffee brews :)
I encourage Ts to incorporate into instruction IF APPROPRIATE. Otherwise it is a classroom decision
Good morning, . I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina
Good morning ! Great question. I definitely think the answer varies depending on the age group.
Good morning everyone at ...been a LONG time since I chatted with ya'll ..Kerri from NZ
I haven't seen cell phones but I think a good, solid, stable charging station for laptops and tablets is huge. Lots of cable ties.
With cell phones, I was always a fan on students keeping them on the desks, face up. Students calmed down once they could see it.
Good morning! I was up with the crickets, not even the birds. Oy.
I am in a grade 3-5 school- currently phones are not allowed in our school, but other devices are...imp. to be clear re: rules
Ss have to understand the what/why/how when it comes to tech use related to their learning. Ts job to guide this process
I really like that! When I know I will be given a chance to check, I'm less likely to multi-task & get off track
No cell phones and laptops are limited to about once a week so they are just happy to have them. Very few problems.
Cool. Makerspace project?
We allow on a case-by-case basis IF the 1:1 iPad doesn't have what they need. Ss also free to use them at lunch. Works well.
It's all about creating a classroom culture of trust and respect when it comes to BYOD. Always look to the work of
great, getting in lots of class time this year? that's the best!
Yes- and be open to the fact that learning with a device might look different/be a different process https://t.co/9q1L6FCF14
Ss have to understand the what/why/how when it comes to tech use related to their learning. Ts job to guide this process
I'm in the same boat, Kathy, with my grade 1 students.
my admin was just complaining abt allergies yesterday, what's so troublesome this time of yr? Feel better =)
Yes, I have done that, and it works well. I tell Ss that there are times I need to check my phone too, (kids sick etc)
expectations and boundaries are key to maximized usefulness with tech in classrooms
Good morning everyone! Popping in late just to say hi! Gotta be at school early today! Have a gr8 day!
I've seen many strategies since we've gone 1:1. My fave is the traffic light: red no CB, yellow login and wait green get to work.
Also, being clear on the instructional purpose. Not just, "Go ahead and use it".
Sa are using previous assignments w/my feedback in groups to teach each other topics in Physiology
good morning Oona ...long time
Engagement is the best form of classroom management. If students are excited about their work, management is unnecessary.
I think responsible use is the way to go. Trying to keep them away forever isnt going to work.
It gets to developing a mindset of treating students like people :) Often Ss want the same things we would!
Let's hope grade 1 and 3 never have this issue! Yikes!
With well-established relationships with Ss and engaging instruction, personal electronic distractions should be minimal.
"Calmed down" - love it https://t.co/gz73S4QmAt
With cell phones, I was always a fan on students keeping them on the desks, face up. Students calmed down once they could see it.
That's what I am thinking. Washi tape, etc.
Thanks. Ragweed. It's the biggie. Have a great day!
Doing OK...not easy though. Trying hard!
ugh. Me too. Could fall asleep last night, and woke up at 4 this morning.
This week I'm teaching 7 Habits and phone use/testing is covered in the "urgent but not important" quadrant for time management 1/2
Teachers should always be walking around the room to support students. This inherently helps with classroom management re: BYOD
Good morning! Long time no chat. Absolutely--classroom culture impacts every procedure & activity.
I'm sure it's exhaustingly awesome!
Do Ts use an actual stoplight visual or is this just verbalized?
Makes sense! Was in PD this summer and they asked Ts to turn over. I sure didn't like it :)
Indeed! When you have built a strong level of trust, this issue is well handled like any other. Not a problem.
Nice. Ss take ownership. Real learning. Looking forward to how it goes tomorrow.
2/2 It's important for Ss to understand that hyper-connectedness is damaging. Ts need to model unplugging & mindful use of phones
Sometimes Ss typing away b/c you piqued their interest & we shut them down for "playing on device". Know difference.
Cell phones are a T decision. I know 5thgrade Ts who have invited phones in for special projects.
This. https://t.co/F6yjP6OHQY
Engagement is the best form of classroom management. If students are excited about their work, management is unnecessary.
That's great. Have you had to address any big challenges with this? Or has it been fairly seamless?
With cell phones, I don't call anyone out; just keep it generic: put your cell phones away. It usually works.
I think an explicit, clear focus on teaching learning skills can be of great help when it comes to class management.
Love your idea about the charging stations!
Agreed . With relationships comes respect. If you create a culture for it.
Excellent point.
https://t.co/A731b8mX2W
Sometimes Ss typing away b/c you piqued their interest & we shut them down for "playing on device". Know difference.
I've had Ts tell every S put it on ur desk face down. Hard to sneak peeks out in the open
The only way devices are managed in my field classroom: put away and out of sight. Some Ss play on their phones anyway.
Embrace them as tools to enhance learning. Creating a "jail" sends wrong/taboo message. Teach Ss balance & responsibilities
Learn to tell the difference between a student checking the time and a student texting. You'd be surprised how often it happens
Responsible use is the way to go because it's our job to help prepare them for use outside of the classroom too
We need to accept that they are here to stay & teach and https://t.co/EXcJX7wvYP
I think responsible use is the way to go. Trying to keep them away forever isnt going to work.
Yes!
https://t.co/1YQpgrEI3h
Embrace them as tools to enhance learning. Creating a "jail" sends wrong/taboo message. Teach Ss balance & responsibilities
Engage rather than eliminate. Find creative ways to empower the practical use of tech for learning outcomes.
Articulating that as part of class norms at start of year is key. What's your purpose in using the device?
AMEN. They r there & we can't legislate them away. USE THEM!!! https://t.co/7djyKm0u8l
Sometimes Ss typing away b/c you piqued their interest & we shut them down for "playing on device". Know difference.
can be either or three most common is one of those colors on display with the other two clipped behind it with a magnet.
Truth! https://t.co/a1vrzYXmcS
Engagement is the best form of classroom management. If students are excited about their work, management is unnecessary.
Indeed. Don't pick a losing battle. Help Ss make good decisions. We ensure the Ts model good tech use as well.
definitely, Glenn built it right. Remember kids are going to make mistakes, teach in those moments, not punish
Ss often connote phone/device use as being subversive. Think that academic use of devices "contaminates" their social uses LOL
Precisely! If the devices are interfering with your teaching, you should think why.
just spoke to my kids again today about the trust culture..moving into new ILE next week so it is top on list
Yes. In my book chapter N is Natural flow, follow the Question about letting Ss Qs lead the way Phones help https://t.co/HgEpvAhy0x
Excellent point.
https://t.co/A731b8mX2W
Sometimes Ss typing away b/c you piqued their interest & we shut them down for "playing on device". Know difference.
That makes sense! I know feel more comfortable having my phone on vibrate or visible when entering a long PD or something.
Try not to fight , keep it face down on desk, had them use it in a QR search first week to have then see it as a tool
Good morning and Happy Wednesday! This first full week is flying by and so much great learning is happening for Ts and Ss
great point. The use of proximity seems to diminish as the students get older, but they need that support too
Will share this with the Ts I'm working with! Definitely a great tip!
I also tell my 11th/12th graders you can't have it both ways. The device makes you accountable to me. Install ,
A former principal had us read a book about how trying to squash some problems just create more. the cell phone issue is that.
yes if it becomes "forbidden fruit" more enticing ! https://t.co/RzUXggR5MI
I think responsible use is the way to go. Trying to keep them away forever isnt going to work.
Saw something where teacher made spaces on board w/kids' names & phones were placed there for tests.
Yes! Asking for their input is something that works as well.
It's hard to match the Cap series with any of them, but yes I completely agree!
Beautifully stated! https://t.co/OivM48Yoww
Engage rather than eliminate. Find creative ways to empower the practical use of tech for learning outcomes.
have them keep their devices face down on their desk at the stat of class and it might curb looking under their desk
Well, hello ! Long time no see. Hoping to get to Ireland in November. That's where you are these days, right?
One T has a calculator/shoe bag. Same idea. https://t.co/KAL48jrj0z
Saw something where teacher made spaces on board w/kids' names & phones were placed there for tests.
This is important, making Ss aware of when tech is required and when it is not. Responsible connectedness. https://t.co/hWggNlB0KZ
Engage rather than eliminate. Find creative ways to empower the practical use of tech for learning outcomes.
That's true! It's also good to consider whether you as a T are willing to follow their suggestions.
Find the purpose. Stay on task. Appropriate for enhanced learning. https://t.co/0yZdfasNy6
Articulating that as part of class norms at start of year is key. What's your purpose in using the device?
I use my phone to download audiobooks, ebooks, etc. and want my students to do the same. Access to the whole world, not just theirs
Funny how you much of the same activity on devices in faculty mtgs that would be disciplined by same teachers in their classroom
Cell Phone ets. -engage-help S's learn how use to use them as a tool-ask them to come up w/ ideas-embrace it-teach appropriateness-
At some point, i was rearranging my classroom so I could catch texters. NOT OK.
Good morning all! Took about 10min to find the question:) great responses! Active engagement works best for me. My Ss too.
so many Ss today can't read "round time" on the wall clock a check s OK but constant texting or video no https://t.co/PMTE64ILFy
Learn to tell the difference between a student checking the time and a student texting. You'd be surprised how often it happens
me as well, I have so many drafts started but few completed
The Starfish and the Spider.
Using voice memos on the phone, dictation tools, etc. is key. Maximize on the productivity capacity.
Yes! When are coming out? I'm based in Dublin. :)
Agreed. Think how often we do this! Need to rethink how to accept use of devices of all types. https://t.co/em3MlJFan2
Sometimes Ss typing away b/c you piqued their interest & we shut them down for "playing on device". Know difference.
I have a lab full of computers this year, they don't need them, but I stressed-"This isn't a phone, it's a computer"
phones & academic integrity: Ss usually fine w in my rm w face down on corner of desk but I dont give grades - I kno it's a struggle
Strong discussion this morning. You all inspire!
We wrote 5 lessons that all Ts taught the first few days with devices. Hoping this helps.
But the way we were taught to teach -- that was never on our radar. Articulating to/with them WHY we allow it & WHEN = key
LOL SOOOO true. https://t.co/16HkRJoNjx
Funny how you much of the same activity on devices in faculty mtgs that would be disciplined by same teachers in their classroom
I found that giving tech breaks or using kahoot for check ins helps keep Ss focused
yes we are 1:1 but sometimes I still have them use the phone to reinforce TOOL, not toy
Also, that's a lifelong workshop: policing vs. assessing.
Sorry I can't stick around this morning! Have an awesome day everyone!
Morning earlier risers, see some great Eds discussing a great topic. I am in favor of , but 1st build culture of learning&trust
I'm a fan of a lot of these policies, but not necessarily happy w how much I like/need them as a person today.
Wow! Fast 15 mins. as always! Have a great day, Friends!
Reinforces that faculty gatherings must be engaging as well rather than the memo-in-person.
https://t.co/Cs5ApbLmTY
LOL SOOOO true. https://t.co/16HkRJoNjx
Funny how you much of the same activity on devices in faculty mtgs that would be disciplined by same teachers in their classroom
At dept meetings, when colleagues recommend books, I take out my phone and get on Goodreads pronto!
Use 2 take pics/video 2 document work 4 digital portfolio-use 2 share the awesome things in your class via class social media accts
we also have to be aware that we live in a world of constant multitasking.
I'll take any of them over DC, but I'm also not a die hard comic fan.
This hits at the heart of responsible use! What example are we setting for each other as Ts?
exactly it shouldn't be "do as I say, not as I do" talk the talk, walk the walk !
So my tip is, don't start with tech, start with building relationships, around trust and a community of learning
1st few weeks, I train Ss out of keeping them on the desk. Phone on desk = addicted, like a pack of cigarettes!
I give media minutes. 60 seconds to check phones. Then refocus https://t.co/U5j8IqklOf
I found that giving tech breaks or using kahoot for check ins helps keep Ss focused
Kahoot is awesome!!! use to great success with Ss to the point that Ss now create own to study!
Yes, but you are a person who thinks and sees and feels. The DC movies are bad. its obvious.
I think it really takes a shift from "evil cell phones" to "tools we can use for learning & fun". Plan & involve Ss to get buy-in.
I have seen a lot of positive work with BYOD if Ts are supported with PD and Ss know expectations. https://t.co/Cc7g2ZLA2s
Morning earlier risers, see some great Eds discussing a great topic. I am in favor of , but 1st build culture of learning&trust
Multitasking = getting less done.
it is distracting when you have a notification, right? Even when you know that it's not really important
Absolutely! It helps too if that's the culture of your school. Easier if S's have similar rules in all classes!
If every day we are asking Ss to multitask that's not good. Should be frequent unplugged, old school learning experiences
Great chat--everyone have a fabulous day :) Thanks!!
HIGHLY recommend Reclaiming Conversation by
Love it! Kahoot reviews that can be shared between groups are awesome!
Thanks for a great start to the day. Make today ridiculously awesome everyone!
Its often more a management of teacher fear."What if they put me on YouTube?""I'm already there being awesome"
Was only able to jump in for a few this am but loved the topic and loved reading all your great responses. Happy !
I used to believe that but I think cellphones are actually changing that fact. They can be mini secretaries.
community buy-in/consistency essential - huge difference in S behavior when Ts all on same pg
Using device for personal use in class is 21st C doodling. Both are answered by thinking of strategies to keep Ss engaged
hahahahahaha "a person who thinks and feels"
Thanks for the good vibes again this morning
Right. I find myself checking even w/o notifications!
Also great apps for Cell phones now - Google classroom & all google stuff, quizlet and so on. Phone can be real tool!
there are some redeemable qualities to them but overall I just cant with mopey heroes.
Oh, it's all smooth sailing! Hard work & reteaching abounds, as does re-reflecting.
Why not just give them 60 seconds every 15-20 mins or so to respond to msgs? Serves both needs. Set a timer.
Morning all joining late but agree that we have to accept it and provide support &PD 4 Ts on integration of devices
Ok. I have to run. Today, just like yesterday, will be a busy day.
This is our 5:50 kicking ourselves off of the sparkchat notification! ;-)
Agreed, phones are great devices. I'm talking about conversations while looking at a screen, walking/texting.
Only if Ss know HOW to maximize on them. Most don't. How to change that?
Whoops, lost track of time - gotta go . Ciao!
As always :) Well, if you can think of any great examples of responding moments-let me know. Have a great day
interesting stuff. Thanks for your ideas
Bye . Time to pack the lunches! And, of course, get my hair did...
Good idea. My kids aren't allowed to use PDs in school, there have been times they needed to get in touch! https://t.co/qLyRE4TZJJ
Anyone tried "phone check breaks" Stats say avg time people check phone before putting away is 30-45sec. Give ss that then move on
Thanks!! I wasn't paying attention!! Caught up in my phone! 😉
it takes an admin mindset shift. Have a "no tech" day for Ts and Admin and then reflect on Ss policy
. I'm reading Wonder w/my daughter now. 2nd time for us. It's a must 4 perspective.
I believe we have to change r mindset and encourage Ts to meet Ss where they r with technology & how 2 include it within instruction
says I have to go. Happy Wednesday !
Create engaging lessons, be present with the Ss and be excited to learn with them!
Good morning everyone it has been a while
Have seen some Ts use a shoe organizer to trade phones for graphing calculators--best to make sure it's not easy to access
Is using a phone/device at school to find answers considered cheating? In the Tech industry it makes you a 6 figure salary analyst
If kids are taught to use PDs to collaborate & solve problems we'd be giving them a life skill, not a punishment
That's the crux of it! https://t.co/mpC699Q9Ty
That's true! It's also good to consider whether you as a T are willing to follow their suggestions.
Cool way to kick-off a lesson could be a quick app share out by you or even better by the students
Have a great people...be the difference today!
That would have a profound effect. Great idea! https://t.co/IgcZDMAZgm
it takes an admin mindset shift. Have a "no tech" day for Ts and Admin and then reflect on Ss policy
