Join us for our district's monthly twitter chat focusing on "Integrating the Arts" on February 1st from 7-8 pm. Come and chat about how to integrate music, art, and other specialized areas into your classroom to build learning across the content areas!
If you missed the vid, a "Single Story" is believing something about someone (namely stereotypes) because it's all you've ever seen from various sources (i.e. the media). #CCSEdChat
A1: I think Ts can combat stereotypes through relationships with their Ss. If they see a group in a different light, and truly understand their desires and needs, it can bring about connections they never even imagined. #CCSEdChat
I feel Ts need to admit that we do often hold some implicit biases. Making oneself more culutrally diverse is one step. Experience & talk w/others to gain better understading and insights. #CCSEdChat
A1. This is a simplistic answer to a very complex issue, but even practices like true collaborative planning can help Ts think beyond a "Single Story" #CCSEdChat
A1 Reflection, reflection, reflection. Teaching is a reflective practice, and we need to be aware of our own biases, in addition to things that we should change and improve. If we do not reflect, we cannot be aware. #ccsedchat
A1 I think it’s important to keep revisiting our biases. We may think we have come a long way but really there is more work to be done. Reevaluating and reflecting is so important! #CCSEdChat
As Social Studies Ts, we know that "history is written by the winners" is frequently a cliche way of limiting the scope of the narrative. We can work to change this with intentionality and deliberately incorporating the voices & experiences of members of other cultures.#ccsedchat
A1: It's important to seek out other perspectives and viewpoints. Just line we teach our students, we must understand that there is more than one way to see. #CCSEdChat
A2 Here comes another great "R"- Relationships. Often Ss need us to provide affirmations of who they are, who the will become & more beyond what is portrayed in the media. #CCSEdChat
A2 Intentionality is extremely critical, and planning for multiple narratives is key. Don't just rely on the main text or source, which often focuses on a single narrative. intentionally including, for instance, the Japanese-American perspective in a study of WWII. #ccsedchat
A2. Ts naturally ask "how do you know?" or "why?" all the time. We need to add "Do you think there's another side to the story?" or "Could there be another way to look at that?" just as much. #CCSEdChat
A2: One way (if I taught ELA) is paired texts written from different sources. In music, we listen and discuss viewpoints of various topics connected to songs. #CCSEdChat
A2- We discussed this today in regards to Black History month. Making sure to go outside of the usual stories. Not that George Washington Carver isn’t great but there are so many other things we can learn from him besides 🥜 or from other inventors. #CCSEdChat
THANK YOU!!! I hate that sometimes we get caught up in considering the more "famous" Black History representatives. There are so many more out there who really changed our country for the better. #CCSEdChat

A3: As a T at a low socioeconomic school, it's easy to push my Ss daily to confront their "single story". I want them to know that just because they are viewed as being one way doesn't mean they HAVE to be that way. They can rise above and change the narrative. #CCSEdChat
A3- Providing students time to find those other perspectives and connections. This could be done in person, or online by using @skype or @Flipgrid . #CCSedChat
A3: Exposure is key! Many students
believe that they only have a "single story" because they don't have opportunities to see themselves otherwise. #CCSEdChat
A3 It's important to evaluate content, plans, and texts/resources with open eyes and remain vigilant in creating learning opportunities that will resonate with all students. I like to provide my Ts with resources that challenge norms. #ccsedchat

Deep culture shapes attitudes, beliefs & more that effect learning experiences. Too often Ts have cultural blindness, meaning teaching practices often reflect and/or communicate a S’s culture is of little consequence to the learning experience.
Q4 for tonight's #CCSEdChat!
A4: I think one issue is Ts teaching the way they were taught, or the way they learned. Forming those bonds with our Ss with help us better understand what we need to do to involve them in their own education as well as how we can reach them where they need us to. #CCSEdChat
A4 I think we need to be sure we are walking the walk, so to speak, and reading various perspectives, listening to various perspectives, and respecting various perspectives. #ccsedchat
A4: All students can learn, but understanding how their culutre affects that process is key. Professional growth through reading by Jensen and collaborating w/ESL Ts and more is helpful. #CCSEdChat
A4: A crucial key to combating cultural blindness is building relationships with your students, especially beyond the classroom. Learning about students as a whole person and the community they are from helps shape practices. #CCSEdChat

It's Thursday night. What are you doing? I'm talking with Ts across the county in our #CCSEdChat. Feel free to join us from the comfort of your living room!
A1 Relationships! Just having lunch with a student and truly listening to them speak about their life and culture can remind teachers of the individuality and value in each and every student. When you learn to love people from other cultures, biases begin to melt. #CCSedChat
A5 Oooh...great question. I love the wording! "Mirror" and "window." Again, we should be intentional about providing opportunities for students to connect on a personal level (mirror) but to also challenge their thinking (window) #ccsedchat
A5: As an Eng T, this is easy for me. We analyze selections from around the globe on a weekly basis. We also take the time to reflect on these selections through the use of digital response blogs. #CCSEdChat
Those are great resources! We have to diligent to seek outside sources and perspectives out for our students even if they are outside of our own. #CCSEdChat
In reply to
@twkellyMRES, @Tolerance_org, @RethinkSchools
A5. So honestly, this is hard for me when I think of ALL lenses of difference...I am not an expert at finding resources for all of these perspectives...any thoughts/ideas? #CCSEdChat
Is there anything "wrong" with asking the Ss for ideas on perspectives to include? Such as authors, stories, cultures, etc.? I think it would lead to an interesting discussion! #ccsedchat

A6: I feel like a broken record. As a world lit T, some of these things come a little more easily in my classroom than they do in others. Throughout the semester, we are constantly learning and sharing about other cultures. #CCSEdChat
I think that's GREAT practice! I think we might have some work to do before some Ss would feel comfortable sharing (disabilities, LGBTQ, etc.) #CCSEdChat

A6: Again be intentional w/resources and expose yourself & Ss to something new. It could be through a novel, song, virtual field trips, even #Gridpals from across the country and world using @Flipgrid#CCSEdChat
A6 Intentionality in resource selection! The new elem ELA curriculum is awesome for this! My Ss learned so much about Native Americans in Module 1 and really learned to appreciate this culture and history! #CCSedChat
A6 This is a tough one because we tend to focus on the Ss right in front of us, but it's important that we focus on teaching KIDS and not just CONTENT...which means sometimes what they need is not on the lesson plan. They need us to model acceptance. #ccsedchat
A6- I think what @AngelaMLWestmo has mentioned a few times tonight is super important here-intentionality. We have to hold ourselves accountable to intentionally bring culture into our classrooms, and not just the ones we are most comfortable with. #CCSEdChat
Definitely one benefit of ELA or Social Studies. I was at a Math PD today where a 7th gr T in CCS explained the creation of the watch by a former slave...he said, "Can we teach content without context?" SO POWERFUL. #ccsedchat
A6: We have to constantly grow our kids to help them see they are part of a global community. So, a lot of times, I have to offer they may not know someone who is ____, but you will. The world is changing. #CCSEdChat
A7: I think it was @jlg523 who mentioned questioning Ss beliefs. I think teaching Ss to question themselves and their reactions is key. Helping them understand that they can control these reactions is imperative for a myriad of reasons. #CCSEdChat

To promote diversity and cultural awareness, I love incorporating Skypes and field trips (when possible), into my lessons. My students and I also love our 50 state postcard exchange & The Trucker Buddy Program! #CCSEdChat
A7. I'm gonna circle back to the flipped video...stories...Ts can share stories of how they have learned about grown in their understanding of others! #CCSEdChat
A7: Part of it is continuous exposure. We can't teach culture in isolation which makes it hard to build deep understanding. The second is teaching our students how to respond to the unfamiliar. #CCSEdChat
A7 I think by putting ourselves out there for students to see could inspire them to question their own beliefs. They may be waiting on someone they know to start the process. Being vulnerable together can be powerful! #CCSEdChat
A8. I think @RMcKayELA and @GladysJohnson03 have equipped us with resources (video and Qs) to have some powerful conversations in our schools and teams! #CCSEdChat
Awesome. Teaching them how to respond to the unfamiliar is critical and that it is okay if their are principles and views different from your own but we should be respectful of those differences. #CCSEdChat
A7 A quote I recently encountered and loved : “Stop teaching ‘Don’t stare,’ and start teaching ‘Say hello.’” I can’t think of a better way to describe how we should encourage Ss to approach and appreciate those who are different in any way! #CCSEdChat
A8: Sometimes we as Ts can get tunnel vision and begin lumping all of our Ss in together. Or lumping new Ss in with old Ss just because of their stories. I try reminding others about the individuality of each stu when I hear/see this happening. #CCSEdChat
A8: We have to model for our colleagues. Also, we should share how to make our classrooms and schools more inclusive and respectful of our students (and staff)! #CCSEdChat
A2. I'll be honest. I try to avoid talking about the media, but, I try to talk educate them on what some issues are about, especially if they say, "i saw it on social media" and tell them SM may not always be most accurate form of media. #thinkbeforeyouhitsend#ccsedchat
@TruckrBuddy Will match you up with a driver to connect with your class through postcards, letters, visits, etc... Great for culture and geography! #CCSEdChat
A2 explain to students that media does not always tell you the entire story. They take bits an pieces to fit their narrative! And to make sure you get the entire story before passing judgement! #CCSEdChat
A2. I foster multiple points of view with current events within my curriculum. This fosters learning ion a broad spectrum of backgrounds / to include ethnicity and social makeup as well.
#CCSEdChat
I am reading an awesome book called Fact vs. Fiction: Teaching Critical Thinking in the Age of Fake News. In this age we must teach Ss to think critically about media sources, audiences, and more from which narratives are written more so than ever. #CCSEdChat
Your ideas, thoughts, & discussion has been enlightening tonight. We hope you continue these crucial conversations in your buildings & PLN's
Thank you all for participating and for all you do to serve NC Students! #CCSEdChat
Absolutely FANTASTIC conversation tonight @RMcKayELA and @GladysJohnson03 ! I'm chomping at the bit to bring more Ts in on this topic! Thanks so much! #CCSEdChat
