Introduction: Time to introduce yourself! Tell us your name, where you are from, your role, and what is a new educational concept or approach you just have tried or you are interested in right now. #Nt2t
We’re using Q1, A1, Q2, A2 (question 1/answer 1) format. Please include the A and number (A1, A1, A2, etc.) in your reply and include #NT2t in your response so it becomes part of the conversation.
I'm Chris from Bloomington, IN. I teach world history for a private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. I'm also on the leadership team of #sschat. Hoping to add more pathways to my Canvas courses for reinforcement and enrichment. #nt2t
Good morning everyone! I'm Julie, co-founder of #NT2t from Missouri, USA. I am a tech trainer in higher ed. I just returned from a briefing at Apple headquarters so my brain is teeming with ideas!
Today’s chat will focus on 5 educational concepts or approaches which are often discussed regarding learning in the 21st century. Let’s share what we are doing, ideas for implementation, concerns, and resources. #nt2t
Hi! I’m Katelynn from Long Island, NY. I am STEAM teacher for K-2 students. I am interested in integrating more phonemena based activities with my youngest learners. #nt2t
A1: In flipped classrooms, students review lecture materials before class as homework. In-class time is dedicated to discussions, interactive exercises, and independent work that would have previously been completed at home — all under the guidance of the teacher. #nt2t
Hi All, my name is Laura and I am a 6th Grade math teacher in California! This is my first time on a Twitter chat! I am looking forward to getting to learn and share with #Nt2t#ProfTabaldo
A1: I use flipped classroom as a preview or introduction tool for students to bring questions to my classes. It can also be used as assessment tool. EdPuzzle, Google Slides and Powtoon are all good tools to use. #nt2t
Q1: Concept 1: flipped classroom - What role does a flipped classroom have in our lessons, our school? Do you see advantages to this approach to teaching? #nt2t
Good morning Yvette! Happy to have you joining #NT2t this morning. Welcome to Twitter as well. When you get a chance, make sure you develop a profile to tell us about you/interests and add a pic as well.
A1: I think there are many advantages to a flipped classroom. Students can explore and display their learning in so many ways. There are also many online resources that can differentiate and individualize student learning. #nt2t
Morning, #nt2t. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. Curious to hear what chatters have to say about some hot buttons today's Q's are pressing.
A1) I know people who have used flipped learning to great effect. Being purely online & asynchronous, I don't so much flip lessons as have used video for feedback for students. #nt2t
Flipped Classroom is imo a way of rethinking old concepts. Thinking about where a method makes sense. Put those collaborative moments in your lessons, where the pupils come together. When they have to work alone, let them do it at home. It just makes total sense. #nt2t
A1: I love using EdPuzzle to flip my classroom! It engages my students while introducing them to new concepts. Using the grade book, I am able to see what my students already know and what I need to reteach in class. #nt2t
Here is my wakelet about flipped classroom - information about theory, pros and cons and about what/why/how. Hope you’ll find it helpful. #nt2thttps://t.co/D96KqVUzTl
A1: A flipped classroom supports differentiation of instruction and promotes enrichment in an engaging way, and gives students an array of options to demonstrate their learning. It also helps add fun to learning! #nt2t
A1: A flipped classroom definitely has many benefits. It allows the ss to gather some information at home about an upcoming topic then they can use instructional time to dive deeper into a specific topic. I am interested to find out if anyone uses it in a k-2 setting #nt2t
A1: Many advantages to a flipped classroom, we use Book Creator to write our non fiction books after researching on iPads using PebbleGo, Word Book Online and Kiddle. #nt2t
A1: Flipped Classroom is imo a way of rethinking old concepts. Thinking about where a method makes sense. Put those collaborative moments in your lessons, where the pupils come together. When they have to work alone, let them do it at home. It just makes total sense. #nt2t
A1: I believe that flipped classrooms should be used more often, there are so many available resources for our students to utilize, and they are easily accessible. Technology is always changing and evolving so anytime it can be used in the classroom, it is a great thing! #nt2t
A1: Flipping the classroom is fun & interesting for the kids & teacher. I don't get to flip much now as a PreK-5 Spanish teacher, but as a middle school teacher, I loved giving chances to pre-learn. There are great advantages, but it does hinge on students doing their part. #nt2t
A1: There are many advantages to implementing a flipped classroom. Students are able to learn through exploration and take charge of their learning. Students can also learn and research at their own pace #nt2t
A1. Flipping frees up time to be 1:1 or small group with Ss to target individual needs misconceptions. But is limited by Ss ability to access material at home and willingness/drive to self learn #nt2t
A1: I am a world language teacher. I used a flipped approach to introduce or review vocabulary or grammar concepts via video so that students come to class ready to use them. This way we spend our class period communicating meaningful ideas, not taking notes. #nt2t
Good morning to Twitter Lauren! Welcome to #NT2t When you get a chance, add a profile that tells us your interests/about you and add a profile pic to your account.
A1: I think there are many advantages to a flipped classroom. Students can explore and display their learning in so many ways. There are also many online resources that can differentiate and individualize student learning. #nt2t
A1) As a parent, if you’re going to give them homework (which is another discussion), I think sometimes flipping it makes sense. If our kid struggles with homework, we don’t have context to help them. I’d love for them to do some learning from home. #nt2t
Q1: Concept 1: flipped classroom - What role does a flipped classroom have in our lessons, our school? Do you see advantages to this approach to teaching? #nt2t
Good morning Henry. Welcome to Twitter and #NT2t There are may Long Island folks here today? Are you guys at a conference? Please think about adding a profile and pic to your account so we can get to know you & your interests.
We are part of an education technology course and as some of us are new to twitter, we thought this would be a great way to start the course off! #nt2t

A1: The flipped classroom plays a key role as an intervention to support student learning at our school. Flipped classrooms provide more opportunities for building collaboration and communication skills in math when in the classroom. #math#ProfTabaldo#nt2t
This sounds great. Learning that can be done individually needn’t be in the classroom. There, you can take advantage of having the group together. #nt2t
A1: I am a world language teacher. I used a flipped approach to introduce or review vocabulary or grammar concepts via video so that students come to class ready to use them. This way we spend our class period communicating meaningful ideas, not taking notes. #nt2t

A2 I quibble w/question because I figure there's no single answer to the challenges of an entire century. PBL mindset, though, holds promise in fostering curious, creative, problem-solving mindsets. #nt2t
A2: PBL has the chance to be incredible in classrooms. However, I see far too many teachers thinking PBL is students in groups making a poster. Not saying that this isn't possibly PBL, but it's a deeper exploration than just a couple days At least when done exceptionally. #nt2t
A2) PBL isn't just having students do projects. It is based on student inquiry, giving students freedom to come up with varied solutions, sharing solutions w/ authentic audience. @BIEpbl is a great resource for PBL. #nt2t
A2. PBL needs authentic real world issues that can be solved and want to be solved by Ss to be effective. I think it can meet 21st century learning but not sure it is sustainable over a long term
#nt2t
A2: I think #PBL activities are successful because students can show their understanding in many different ways and their understanding is deepened through doing and not just listening, seeing #nt2t
A2: Technology could possibly be the answer for PBL. It gives the Ss multiple platforms (apps & web based programs) to demonstrate their learning of content and use their medium of choice to do so. #nt2t
A2 the reason i like PBL is all about motivation. The feeling of working up to something and finishing it can be very rewarding. For some people this can be an exam. But most stundents dont like to work for grades only.
#nt2t
Late to the party but hello everyone! Emily from Mi here! Just stopping by to say hi to everyone new to Twitter chats and participate in some discussion! #EDU5720#nt2t
A2) We’ve always had PBL to a degree, but to the extent that collaboration is identified as a 21st century skill, it has gotten more attention. It’s always been important. #nt2t
Q3: Concept 3: genius hour - GH is often credited for fostering creativity and collaboration. How is GH used in your school? What pros and cons do you see in the concept of GH? #nt2t
A2: Technology is a great tool and asset for #PBL It gives students the choice on how they would like demonstrate the skill/skills taught in class or the gymnasium. #nt2t
A2: PBL has the chance to be incredible in classrooms. However, I see far too many teachers thinking PBL is students in groups making a poster. Not saying that this isn't possibly PBL, but it's a deeper exploration than just a couple days At least when done exceptionally. #nt2t
A2: PBL is a great method to use that allows student-driven questions and interests take control of their learning. Students are engaged while collaborating to solve real-world problems. #nt2t#pbl
I created a shared document of links to various resources (videos, websites,) that Ss can use to research. The doc also has space for Ss to write down the information they find as they research. Everything all in one place! A shared doc also allows for collab wth others #nt2t
A2: I like to use PBL to teach students real life skills instead of rote memorization or drill activities. I consider it a success when they tell me what they learned from one of my projects helped them in another class or in their life! #nt2t
A2: PBL is a great way to alternately assess students! It is a valuable tool for my special education students who do not always perform well on tests or have test anxiety. #nt2t
A3: I’ve done Genius Hour before and starting it this week! I use nearpod to make it student-centered, own pace. Create rubric with students. Completely student ownership + creativity +passion = great things! @JMcCarthyEdS@nearpod#nt2t#EDU5720
A3: I don't think Genius Hour is commonly used at my school. I see it's value, but don't find it feasible with only 45 min with a class each week. As a reg classroom teacher, it's cool, but kids need GREAT amounts of guidance. Especially the unmotivated or distractable. #nt2t
A3: I am hesitant when educators talk about their Genius Hour or 20% time. I am hesitant because in my head, shouldn't this be happening all day long? #NT2t
I know some teachers and schools are using it over years. But to find, plan and execute effective meaningful PBL over and over seems to require daunting effort. Teachers don't always have time/energy to sustain this and will find easier ways. #nt2t
It's not that the students can't use Google or other methods to search for information to address the question or problem they are trying to solve. There shouldn't be an answer/solution that is directly "googleable." #nt2t
#nt2t
Agree Henry! Would also add that tech is a choice that will aid/enhance the learning. It could be doing research, creating a product, connecting with others globally, etc. #NT2t
Hello! My name is Frida and I am a 2nd yr teacher in Watts. This is my 1st time joining #Nt2t and I’m excited to grow my #PNL! I have a Q regarding science curriculum: What are some exemplary #NGSS twitter accounts or hashtags I should follow? #ProfTabaldo
As a precursor to this, I have to ask...how are we preparing students to FORMULATE good questions? Do they understand there are different types/ levels of questions? Do teachers themselves understand this? #NT2t
A2: PBL is a great method to use that allows student-driven questions and interests take control of their learning. Students are engaged while collaborating to solve real-world problems. #nt2t#pbl
A3) I like the idea of genius Hour. As a high school teacher of a course with a huge amount of content, I struggle to think of how it could be incorporated meaningfully within my class. I think it would be a great elective for HS students. #nt2t
A3: My school does not have a specific time for Genius Hour. I would be interested in learning more about how it is implemented on the middle school level. #nt2t#ProfTabaldo
When PBL takes root as structured/scaffolded way of learning, then Genius Hour (or other-named initiatives) is like removing some of those constraints as if they were training wheels to see how students ride more independently. #nt2t
Q4: Concept 4: personalized learning - personalized learning refers to efforts to tailor the educational process to meet the different needs of students. What instructional design elements are helpful to personalized learning and what elements are not? #nt2t

A3: I am hesitant when educators talk about their Genius Hour or 20% time. I am hesitant because in my head, shouldn't this be happening all day long? #NT2t
Yes, and I think that opportunities for doing this can be built into existing courses (required and elective) though I'm not sure that would equate to 20% of the course. #nt2t
YES!!! Not only do we all learn differently, we also convey our understanding differently. We need to provide students the opportunity to decide how they share their learning. #NT2t
A4: Edpuzzle supports personalized learning and providing different mediums of texts (videos, pdfs, docs, websites) when using text sets to introduce a topic #nt2t
Q4: Concept 4: personalized learning - personalized learning refers to efforts to tailor the educational process to meet the different needs of students. What instructional design elements are helpful to personalized learning and what elements are not? #nt2t
A4: Personalized learning is most effective when students are given resources they need to strengthen their weaknesses and resources to challenge themselves based on their strengths- this is why I love technology- it allows me to do all of this for all 26 kids! #nt2t
A4: Personalizing Spanish lessons in a PreK-5 classroom is essential, particularly for heritage learners. It is tricky to push excelling learners while working with those who struggle. I find grouping to be helpful; students of the same level working together. #nt2t
A4: I think personalized learning and PBL work really well together. It gives ss opportunities to access curriculum through various modalities. Incorporating more pbl activities will help with personalizing the learning process for your ss. #nt2t
A4: Meeting students' needs is a priority. Personalized learning allows me to differentiate for my ss, while meeting the needs of the curriculum. School 4 One allows me to group my students in different ways -whether it be a scaffold graphic organizer or a different text. #nt2t
A4) I think this can be a benefit of online learning, especially self-paced courses such as what my school offers. I can see where Ss are in their learning & offer alternative sources though I'd like to "automate" a bit using Canvas Pathways or similar. (hyperdocs?). #nt2t
A4: Especially in a high school setting, I believe it is important for resources to be given to students which can guide them on the path to the task/assignment you would like completed. Once students have a grasp, they can do their own research using sources they found. #nt2t
Hi Damaris, thank you for sharing! I use #EdPuzzle frequently as well, but not for #differentiation but in order to facilitate positive student behavior.
Q: Can you give one example of how you tailer EdPuzzle videos for students? #Nt2t#ProfTabaldo

A4: My special education students use RAZKids and Spelling City on a daily basis! Each of these apps allows you to input each students' independent reading levels and differentiated spelling patterns.... both which help to personalize their learning #nt2t
I have never heard of those programs, interesting! I work in a #middleschool but I will look into them to see if they can help my team. Thank you! #Nt2t#ProfTabaldo

Q5: Trend 5: Concept 5: self-directed learning - Giving students the opportunity to guide their own learning offers a new role for teachers. What is needed to support this learning style as a “teacher”? How might this concept be integrated into current school structure? #nt2t
With many of the tools that #nt2t is chatting about this morning, yes, teachers can use them to inspire student learning, yet sparks really start to fly when students step to controls of those tools to design for themselves, their classmates, & others.
A5: Self directed learning requires courage on the part of the teacher. One idea for incorporation is getting students to help plan future units of study. They can suggest ideas for themes, projects, assessments. #nt2t
Personalized learning is the way to allow students access to the same information using different mediums that engage students in the learning process. #nt2t
Thank you for referencing #School4one! Do you know if this is this primarily used in elementary schools or can middle schools look into purchasing this as well? #Nt2t#ProfTabaldo

A5: Self directed learning is amazing! This is how I use my hyperdocs, but it takes a lot of teacher preparation and training students. Teachers need various resources of all kinds to make this happen. Most of all, we need patience!! #nt2t
Agree. Students can create their own Edpuzzle ieos using existing content or making their own videos and loading into Edpuzzle to pose questions, offer additional resources, etc. #nt2t

A5: Kidoyo is a great platform that allows students to CHOOSE their learning. The program provides different challenges for students to complete and earn badges, while learning something they are interested in! #nt2t
Our district uses a platform called Kid OYO. Stands for “On Your Own.” The learning is driven by the student choice. Ss choose different learning paths and can complete it on their own time and earn micro-credentials. Great tool for self-directed learning! @kid_OYO#nt2t
A5 To foster students' self-direction, teachers can dial down the mentoring approach in favor of turning up the coaching approach. https://t.co/19K6IgbOje#nt2t
A5: Teachers may have to rethink what it means to "teach." When students guide their own learning you have to step back and let students be in the drivers seat. You are there to be the "GPS" if you will...offer multiple routes and reroute only as needed. #NT2t
A5: I believe that the Ss need to have a clear goal and rubrics help with this. Learning standards should also be clear and a guideline for a culminating project that show that they have mastered the standards #nt2t
A5: I believe students should be in charge of their own learning. They should not be spoon-fed all the required information, they should do their own research to find out the desired information in class. It may not be easy initially; however it will help in the long-run. #nt2t
Exactly! Students don't come to school one day suddenly knowing how to do all of this! Hopefully this is starting in elementary school, developing skills along the way. #NT2t
Q6: What’s your opinion of these concepts in general? Should teacher constantly test new approaches or focus their teaching on well-established and proven concepts? #nt2t
And support from other educators who are experiencing/have experience. Oh yeah...that is why all of us are here this morning! Don't forget the power/experience behind your Twitter #PLN#NT2t
I like dusting off & sharing this article when chats turn to self-direction. It highlights moment when I learned there are -gogies beyond pedagogy. https://t.co/dAfQAkKa1X#nt2t

A6: There are so many innovative options in the edu field, and though I do think it's vital to stay current, I also believe teachers need to use what works for their and their students' style and personality. Any method is valid if it works for the educator and the kids. #nt2t
A5 To foster students' self-direction, teachers can dial down the mentoring approach in favor of turning up the coaching approach. https://t.co/19K6IgbOje#nt2t
A6) I think that new approaches should be explored & considered carefully based on one's context. However, if we only depend on well-established and proven concepts, how will the field advance? And how many teachers are consuming ed research right now? #nt2t
A6: I think testing new approaches is important because the way students learn is always changing, so we need to continue to adapt to their learning styles and needs #nt2t
A6: Teachers should test new strategies to support student learning and 21st century skills provided there is reflection on the outcomes and that new approaches are grounded in growing students learning. #math#ProfTabaldo#nt2t
Personalized learning is the way to allow students access to the same information using different mediums that engage students in the learning process. #nt2t
A6: I believe that you should not always stick with the tried and true ways we may have been taught about. Teachers need to take chances on new and exciting ideas and concepts and see how they work for them. You will never know until you try these new things for yourself! #nt2t
A5: Self directed learning is amazing! This is how I use my hyperdocs, but it takes a lot of teacher preparation and training students. Teachers need various resources of all kinds to make this happen. Most of all, we need patience!! #nt2t
A5: Teachers become facilitators and guide students along in the learning process. Teachers need resources and various mediums to provide students with the opportunity to create this type of student-driven environment.#nt2t
Q2 Clear expectations, relavant topics, student choice, student driven. Wrap up with discussion allowing each group to share with compliments, challenges, solutions, problem solving, and teamwork - amazing in my K classroom. #nt2t
A6: As @seni_bl already said: most of these concepts share the same ideas: students take responsibility, choose the subjects, monitor their own learning process. Every teacher should implement those ideas into his lessons in some kind of way. #nt2t
A6: There are so many innovative options in the edu field, and though I do think it's vital to stay current, I also believe teachers need to use what works for their and their students' style and personality. Any method is valid if it works for the educator and the kids. #nt2t
A6: I think personalized learning will only continue to grow. As we learn more and more about how people learn, it just makes sense. I am hoping class size will be reduced to make this more feasible and ensure kids get the most from the experience. #NT2t
Challenge: Talk to your colleagues and try to discuss these concepts and approaches to find out how you can implement one of them at school. Tell us! Tweet your experience, your thoughts and ideas on Twitter and include #nt2t in your post.
A2 PBL fosters collaboration, rich dialogue, student engagement, sparks curiousity, and gives all learnings paths to explore their learning modality of choice. #nt2t
It shouldn’t be about doing “a thing” and then moving onto the next thing. These needn’t be the latest trends, but concepts that can be seamlessly woven in to improve practices overall. #nt2t A6
A4: I think personalized learning and PBL work really well together. It gives ss opportunities to access curriculum through various modalities. Incorporating more pbl activities will help with personalizing the learning process for your ss. #nt2t
A6: Don't think we need to throw out the old because of the new "shiny" that's moving in. Look at what works, reflect on how to make it better, get rid of what isn't working, and ALWAYS be willing to try new ideas. One size does NOT fit all when it comes to learning #NT2t
Though I love how research about reduced class sizes (inconclusive) is thrown up frequently by powers that be (including politicians) yet other research is conveniently ignored. #nt2t
