A1: My struggle as a supervisor was that my teachers did not have adequate time for PD in health and many did not come through college with a health ed degree. #espechat This was not an issue for my Directors and it was not good for kids.
A1 We don’t have a block of time set out for #healthed (or a class), it’s a matter of stitting down and intentionally sprinkling it input lessons. Also keeping in mind what topics we would like to hit and how much time we dedicate when we do sprinkle it in #ESPEchat
Super excited to announce I was named the 2018 NDSHAPE Elementary PE Teacher of the Year! I am extremely humbled, proud and grateful to many people on here. Without my Twitter PLN this would not be possible! Thank-you so much!! #blessed#mpsCore#PhysEd#ndpechat#espechat 🙏
There’s an abundance of PE curriculum available, but I haven’t seen as much health. I feel there’s PE lessons that incorporate health tips or topics, but they don’t feel like they organically fit with the lesson. They’re kind of an after thought. #espechat
A1 The Time aspect is always the hardest to navigate. I’ve found that with my k-2 we have to infuse it into the PE lesson when we only have 45 min😳 #espechat
A2) Last year I had 5-6 things happen in the same week (Ss saying things, parents saying things, etc). I ended up having a whole class on conversations about being bullied, feel marginalized, and not heard. #ESPEchat
A2: In a #skillsbasedhealthed model this is so logical. Having students work on m/e health supports their wellness and @SHAPE_America standards 4 and 5. #espechat.
Examples would be the intentional teaching of speaking praise statements and accepting feedback.
A2: I bring in ways to reduce stress, and self-monitoring how you feel in general. I honestly don't do much and am excited for this chat to find ways to add to what I do! #espechat
A2 we spend quite a bit of time on SEL at the k-2 level. This is where the good habits begin. Much easier to teach when they young and responsive. #espechat
I got to hear a lot from my Ss. They shared a lot about how they felt. Was able to discuss ways that we (Ss and teachers) could change our environment. #ESPEchat
A2) This year I am trying to change the culture at my school. I want our school to be more polite and accepting of each other. I instituted a ‘door greeter’ for each class who gives high-5s, knucks or handshakes as the class comes in. 🤞that this changes things! #espechat
A1 I have the Michigan Model this year. Still not sure exactly how I'm going to fit it into my elem PE classes. Came with a ton of paper and pencil activities. Will modify #espechat
A2 I have not, with the exception of bullying prevention but I think the focus throughout society is making things like depression and mental illness more acceptable to talk about #espechat
In fire and ice tag -@thepespecialist- we pause during the game for students to share how they feel when students help unfreeze each other. Helps start discussion of why it’s important to include others #espechat
A2 we model good and bad responses to each other and how to speak to others to make them feel good about themselves. My para and I often behave the wrong way to elicit the correct choices from the Ss. They are appalled and respond to us quickly😳😉 #espechat
A2 I have yet to dedicate an entire class but I bring to light some topics and have ss self-assess how they felt physically/mentally felt in a lesson using hand signals. Also, I’ve used the role of an honest ranger to observe and take note of team interactions 1/2 #ESPEchat
#A#espechat An example of a lesson I used w 7 dimensions of wellness was called "Famously Healthy" Printed off 10 famous people and put them on poly spots and had the students select which one was the healthiest according to 7 dimensions
A3 I haven’t thought of the 7 dimensions in a while. When I think of “health” I think of eating well and exercising. 🤦♀️ So happy to have this refreshed in my mind for more potential health lessons. #espechat
A4 we started the year off with learning the food groups and the Whoa Slow and Go foods. Ss began inspecting their lunchboxes immediately. Parent feedback was excellent. Refrigerators inspected and snacks re-thought. #espechat
A4) Not positive on the exact source, maybe @physedreview, but there was a bottle flipping MyPlate activity circulating Twitter last year that I wanted to try but I was afraid the water bottles would break open...😬 #espechat
A4. I would say Nutrition is probably the strongest area we teach in #PhysEd. It links well with overall fitness. We do food labels, calorie intake and expenditure. We develop food logs. We do garden with PBL. #espechat
A4 I use what I call Healthy Challenges throughout the school year that include a nutrition component. I have a bulletin board in my classroom and one component is the S's can take a pic of their family sitting down to dinner and cooking dinner #espechat
A4. Physical Best is a great resource for nutrition activities, and healthy concept lessons from @HumanKineticsPE, MyPlate and Dairy Counsel. #espechat
A4: I spend a decent amount of time discussing myplate. I also have a project that I do with my K students where they get to taste different fruits and vegetables #espechat
A4: Students can do a photo journal of the food they eat or journal what they eat. Apps: @Fooducate@MyFitnessPal (only catch you have to be 18 yrs; I always say with parent permission). Teach students how to read a food label. Model nutritious eating #espechat#nutrition
A3 I’ve taught the dimensions separately and have definitely ran out of time. Need to do a better job at teaching them and stringing it back together so that ss can see the whole picture! #ESPEchat
A5. @OPENPhysEd has some good lessons for health concepts. @SHAPE_America Skills Based Health Books are great, Melanie Lynch's book is good. CDC has some great resources. #espechat
A5. Many good children's books that develop relationships with students. Are you a bucket filler? Albert the Running Bear, Ask your local librarian. #espechat
A4 Reading food labels. When we are through we do a food detectives activity where I typically hide all sorts of flabels under polyspots and students work in pairs to find a specific item. Could be an ingredient or a nutrient amount.1 flip ➡️ exercise/challenge.#espechat
#espechat Another lesson I did along with the computer ed teacher was a healthy grocery shopping unit. Kids found recipes in computer ed and I took them all grocery shopping at our local Grocery Store
A4 Also spend a day on sugar. Measuring out how much sugar is in many items that students eat/drink every day. Brings about great conversations in class and at home. Great feedback from parents #espechat
A6. Standard 8-Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.#espechat We need to advocate for our communities. We have challenging health crisis in the United States.
A4 Food groups, what your plate should look like, nutritional facts (specifically looking at ingredients and sugars), being able to substitute the s socks they eat with healthy option snacks #ESPEchat
#espechat I also use costumes to engage my students interest in health education. Their favorite is Dr. Health. What do you do to engage your students in your lessons?
My favorite is teaching what ingredients list order means and finding ways the product trys to trick uninformed consumers
Strawberry poptarts box "made with real strawberries" on front. Students find on ingredients list.
Way at bottom "less than 2% real strawberries 🧐#espechat
Thanks for moderating #espechat@ClearlyCrystal . I did way more reading and soaking in of ideas than anything else tonight. But I have a few keepers I am excited to try to build in!
A6 Developing a program including fitness and nutritional log. Moreso, stumped on how to collect this from them efficiently with 45-55 ss— electronically/handwritten. Should I build a form? Have them download the document and work on it via google docs/Microsoft word 🤔 #ESPEchat
Make it fun and relate to the community and stories. #espechat Join Voxer and the health groups. Ask questions too. #espechat We all are learning still.
