The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
Wendy Howk from NEISD in San Antonio. Just finished off the turkey and stuffing tonite - but honestly had to get a Whataburger for dinner last night as a break! #txlchat
Today I was putting away books & I thought “What would @romenendez14 do? Would she put away books or build relationships?” So I put those books back on the cart they will be there tomorrow. #txlchat
a1 I would ask @JenGilbert42 Then we would make an awesome list. Books, build @OverDriveLibs collection, audio books, some cameras, memory cards, books, another laser cutter, and some more books. #txlchat
A1: OMG! Where to begin!? Definitely updating our space to allow for more tech integration with outlets, tech friendly tables/seating and collaboration stations (tables with the TV for small groups); author/illustrator visits, BOOKS! #txlchat#punkrocklibrarian
A1 WOW, $50,000 it would take a while to get my brain around it. VR glasses, a state of the art AV lab, and devices to check out to students who don't have them. to breach the #digitaldivide#txlchat
A1: I would spend most of the money creating improved reading areas and creating areas in the library. I would also update my collection. All of this in an effort to build a strong reading community. #txlchat
A1: I think I would definitely spice up the collection with some new and popular titles. I would also add some robots to our MakerSpace! Love @WonderWorkshop@Ozobot@Sphero and all they can do to help Ss learn coding! #TxLChat
A1-1. I would buy shelves that are deep enough for my non-fiction books to not hang over or push through the other side 2. BOOKS! 3. More electrical plugs #txlchat
A2a Keep the vitae current so you don’t have to remember everything later. Update annually. Good if you run for an office/leadership position or add a second job such as adjunct prof #txlchat
a2 Reflection... some sense of goals, what worked, next steps... and yes, should have an electronic portfolio, or at least a robust collection of photos/videos to jog memory. #txlchat
A2: a I need an updated Vitae to track my progress and stay relevant. b. I need an electronic portfolio to help me track what I do and how I make an impact on my campus. Thanks to #txlchat I am on track this year to meet my personal, professional, and program goals.
A2 You keep growing and learning every year. It provides a great model for teachers, and it shows your admin how knowledgeable and passionate you are as a librarian. They will see you as a great resource. #txlchat
A2 a. I use mine all the time! It’s important to keep track of your positions, published works, presentations, & professional involvements! I refer to it constantly. Why would you not? 🤷🏼♀️ #txlchat
A1 we are building WiFi towers in #castleberryisd, I would look at resources to meet the needs of our community beyond our 4 walls-maybe parent resources, etc. Also building out our new makerspace area called “The Corner” need 3D printer, podcasting equipment #txlchat
A2: YES and YES!! You just never know in these times if you will be able to keep your position, so always be prepared! The digital is a great self-promo device to share with Ts, Admin, etc.! ;)

#txlchat A2: The vitae stays updated so you can remember all you've done! Necessary for committee applications and various other unforeseen awesome opportunities!
A2 b. Absolutely! Keep all that information available via a link makes it easily shareable & accessible to anyone that might request. Also helpful when you apply for grants & awards. #txlchat
A2 This from the voice of experience....ME! Keep that vitae updated. After you've been in the business for a long time and you have to create a list of organizations and positions held, it's hard to remember. #txlchat
A2: a. Update your vitae because you never know what might come your way or what curveballs might be thrown...I thought I would retire from my last school, but budget cuts changed that plan. b. I have thought in recent times about an ePortfolio...where do I start? #txlchat
A2: a. I need to update mine since moving schools and districts. It sure is hard to remember all you do! b. I made a website that highlighted my programs and accomplishments. It is a great reminder of my time in my first library. #TxLChat
A2a: Keeping your vitae updated will help you prepare for unexpected opportunities.
A2b: Follow me on social media and you will see my electronic portfolio (still a work in progress).

A2 This from the voice of experience....ME! Keep that vitae updated. After you've been in the business for a long time and you have to create a list of organizations and positions held, it's hard to remember. #txlchat
A2 Keep professional pictures as well as your vitae. When I applied to be a Google For Education Certified Trainer it was really beneficial to have. #txlchat
A2 keep track of everything! Presentations, keep your vitae updated... it’s more than a resume. Your portfolio provides evidence, a place to keep artifacts, data & support mechanisms. This year we are all creating portfolios and writing our goals based on school plans #txlchat
A3: I have no idea what the correct answer is here! This is my first year (out of 12 as a librarian) that I have been exposed to Scholastic Dollars or book fairs at all for that matter. #txlchat
A3: I rely heavily on Scholastic dollars to fill out my library collection. Kids love the Branches series, Epic, Pilot, and Blast Off Readers. What hurts is the hefty Scholastic shipping fees and poor quality shipment packaging #txlchat
A4 I think it is the culture that you create. It is normal to fail. The key is learning from it and moving forward. Let students see you take risks and learn from mistakes. #txlchat
A4 I believe the introduction of Makerspaces into libraries has made a huge difference in this area. Students, teachers, and librarians having opportunities to try new things, make mistakes, and fail. FAIL=First attempt in Learning #txlchat
A5: I feel like the library is already a place that pushes Ss to keep trying, so in order to make changes I would have to survey our students to see how we can do all we can to reinforce our support! #txlchat#punkrocklibrarian
A4: I am not afraid to work through problems- talking as I do it. This models how to persist. I even ask if other students can help. Modeling how to problem solve and ask for help lets them know I don't know everything. #txlchat#persistence#GRIT
Bram Stoker said you learn from failure, not from success. I make it clear that failing & messing up happens. I want students to know that failure actually helps you more than success! #txlchat
A4. remembering to let them know you care while still pushing THEM to own their work and their outcomes (teach the children, don't feel sorry for the children---it doesn't help them in the long run) #txlchat
my office. I have salt lamps and hot tea and tissues; a lovely antique couch and Harry Potter house chairs; light comes in filtered through the turquoise sheers on the window-walls. It is very peaceful. #totalchillzone#kidsinthereALLTHETIME#loveit#txlchat
