Hey all, Sean in St. Augustine, 3rd Grade, and I've been loving Guns and Ships from Hamilton lately. Howdy everyone!
Hi there! Kimberly, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach here! The sounds around me are rumbles from all the bikes!
Hi everyone! Jumping in and out today. Kathy from ft
Hi, Kathy! How are yo feeling?
Hello folks - haven't made it to the chat in a few weeks. Happy to be here. I'm Shauna in Toronto. Current fave music - Bieber.
You're swamped for bike week, no?
Hey there, Leslie! How's Mexico treating you these days?
I like classical when doing some work.
A1: Ss create playlists on Youtube (we discuss what sorts of music is appropriate for school). I love Brown Noise when I work!
A1. Pandora stations: Taylor Davis radio for and Howard Shore or Enya when they are creating.
A1 we have a class DJ. Music stirs the soul and creative spirit
A1 I play classical when Ss are reading, I like classic soul for work time. Ss like Amazon's clean pop station on Amazon Music.
It's doing okay. How are things with you?
I like Bronze Radio Return radio when I'm working.
Just had a nice EdCamp, and have some fun things on the horizon in class and out, so that's good.
A1: Ss have earbuds and can listen to self-selected music (fits into appropriate criteria we have discussed) when working ind
Chris from PA coming in a bit late. The chocolate cupcake was calling my name.
A1: We talk about what kinds of music help each of us work and when it's appropriate to listen to music
Hey Chris! You didn't bring any to share?
Us too, so much different taste in our class!
Hi . Stacey from NJ. Missed the last two weeks...sorry I'm late.
Hey! How are you feeling?
Sadly no. Had 2 eat it before I go to spinning class tomorrow night. But Whole Foods makes a mean GF Choc cpck.
I love when Ss expose me to new types of music and artists. Great for them to do that for each other too
For sure, there's a lot of old punk and hip hop that I love that aren't playable with kdis!
A1 Live classical music and jazz during writing workshop.
A2. Music to go along w/a unit, for example the Harlem Renaissance. 2001 A Space Odyssey for space-or anything actually.
like the use of jazz. never thought of it for writing. https://t.co/Xw9YCVuVFP
A1 Live classical music and jazz during writing workshop.
End of yr survey, Ss often say they appreciate that they could listen to music-before they say anything they learned in class!
There was a great song by Killing Joke called Madness. often refer to it. "This is madness!!!"
I have also used a piece of music as a starting point for creative writing. "What does this make you think about?"
A2 loved Beethoven's Flight of the Bumble Bee during our plant growth and development unit during pollination.
A1. I play "Happy" on Fridays to set the mood. 🤓
Whom have they introduced you to lately?
Better. Sorry I have missed two weeks part week I had a meeting I forgot about.
A2: Before we "Text Bust," we listen to the Ghostbusters theme song. "Bustin' makes me feel good!"
A2: great to use for art class.
I had forgotten about that! Thanks!
A2: Cleaning the classroom, we listen to Disney classics "Whistle While You Work," "Spoonful of Sugar"
This is fabulous!!! Thanks!!
Some of my Ss told me the music inspired their writing, esp poetry.
A student was recently listening to trap music - which I'd never heard of before.
I've never heard of it either. Googling it now!
Better than storing? Where does the archive go?
Have it playing now!! Pretty cool!
Hi - Marifran, hs librarian from NY, jumping in after our family dinner (we take b'fast4dinner v. serious)
A2: Fun to do art while listening to Peter and the Wolf-identify each diff character and instrument - v evocative for creation
Hi Marifran! I love breakfast for dinner!
Are they posting poetry w/ music playing?
It was like one or two clicks. They host it, too.
A2: We usually have a class theme song. Last year, it was "Brave" by Sara Bareilles.
A2 We talk about how books have different genres and/ music. GarageBand helps
They were in the midst of a poetry unit and writing a class anthology.
It's nice when you have a soundtrack to go with a book! I love playing songs that the book mentions.
A1: I used this one today for the first time: https://t.co/cgQMXc075I Seemed helpful, focusing for S bio stats work.
A3: writing lessons, close reading, grammar, imagery, music history.
Oop, it's too late in the day for me to click on that NOW, but during class? Heck yeah!
Nice piece of music. Love Prokofiev!
A3: Write out song lyrics w/o any context and have Ss analyze it like you would a poem. Then, surprise them by playing the song
I have used lyrics as mentor texts for poetry or as a prompt for other genres.
A3 You can get a strong sense of concise storytelling, and POV w/a song. For early readers, a killer way to practice fluency.
Awesome! It's good to teach kids how to search Youtube and make playlists as well - curate songs by topic
A2: I mostly use songs to enhance transitions or to boost the mood. Or I say, "It's your life, it's now or never!"
I'm later than you - good to see you!
A3. Students can try to figure out the mood or theme for a piece of music, much like they do for stories they are reading.
Or, have Ss create a playlist to match with their book or individual characters!
howdy back atcha, Sean - love this line of Qs tonight
You too. Thanks for the book rec. already have it downloaded with 3 others.
Love, love, LOVE this idea!
A3: I wish I taught socials sometimes because of the learning and analyzation potential locked within songs.
I have used music from Historyteacher to teach content. Love some content related history songs. https://t.co/RpbwSyUvw6
Do you accept all music or are you discerning due to lyrics?
is this appropriate for elementary?
A3 it is a great way to talk about culture and events in a person's life
Oh, yes, it's sleepy go night night at this time of day, but in the a.m. and bright daylight it was great!
A1: music in the morning sometimes. I have Spotify premium so I build playlists to get the day started.
I screen all music. I was actually called out by a parent for listening to a kidbop version of a Katy Perry song.
mentioned it as a rec from her Ss.
I'm sad that there's stuff that my Ss miss because of lang. A lot of Hamilton is off limits. :(
Nice, I sometimes play Barney's "Clean Up, Clean Up," to convey the transition to clean up time. hehe
A2: We usually start the day with a little Hatnote to keep things peaceful - we start early https://t.co/skGg7btZQH
What???? I would have called you out on just listening to Katy Perry. What grades?
A2: shared radiooooo with me over summer. Would love to try it.
I play that if they're NOT getting how to clean up.
Like a class name, sort of comes about organically. A s comes to school and shares a song, says "this reminds me of us!"
I need to do more with music!
Did you see the post of the peeps pic of Hamilton?
A4: I am reminded of last term's creation of 2 songs about biodiversity by . Still singing them now!
We look at the lyrics and unpack the song. If we love the message, it becomes our song!
wasn't aware of language in Hamilton. It was Jefferson, right?
A4 We do a one song dance party if we've been sitting too long.
A4. When I taught Kg, we used lots of music for transitions, instruction, etc. Now I use it mainly as just work music.
No! Now I have to go look it up!
Leslie that's the cutest!
3rd grade, but it was a kidbop cd. Ear poison, but my kids loved it.
is awesome for brain breaks!
What grade do you teach? I teach seniors; it often makes them reminsce about ELEM/MS. :)
and Ham, Burr, Mulligan, they all say stuff that doesn't fit 3rd grade!
A3: I had to analyze a song in college awesome project. Dangerous Minds: Dylan is poetry!
Hi Sean, just reading the feeds today
Music should be considered an art form. Some artist use it as such. It's a shame that they can not be rec as just that.
A4: Did "Baby Experiments" last yr, studying infant development every month-we used songs to see if they could stand up, dance
Yes, a fellow T had some on in her room and I decided it might be good in my room too. It was!
A4: I have a terrible singing voice, but will often sing instructions. Ss reply in kind. Makes things a bit fun and goofy
a4 we use the whip and nay nay as a reward somedays
I love books that come w playlists to inspire S thinking
A4: Ss share their learning in many ways - incl through song and rap that speaks to the theme or that they've written
A4 Music set the tone & mood for the task & hand. Silly music to get us going in the am & after lunch, low key for other times.
Thanks, Velia! I am finally catching on to Twitter's built in GIF options!
A4 Work hard, and the music turns up, fool around, and it goes off...powerful motivator. We all cooperate (ideally...)
sucked up by Google Play Music - haven't made time to investigate the changes, went back to Pandora
It is very interesting plus get to see some old record labels.
Darn--who would have thunk! The founding fathers!! Go figure.
Pretty good, except gnats are getting active here in FL.
Thanks! We used to do a lot with photosynthesis, and there are lyrics for it. Lots available. Can't do it all.
I'm Hercules Mulligan, when you knock me down, I get the _____ back up again!
A4: telling them the purpose of using the music would help. Share studies with them before playing the tunes.
I almost had them do lyrics for this unit, but one S confessed she was glad I didn't b/c another class already is.
A4: Having Ss working at the counter, taking mini-breaks to change a station, ask a/b a song or artist https://t.co/2CYhdqzyb1
Some for 4-5-6, but not all. I always watch and preview before sharing anything.
Any dab? My Ss all dab all the time now.
is now trending in USA, ranking 50
A5 I love the idea of creating content related parodies for popular songs.
A5 Having a variety of ways for Ss to share what they've learned makes the activity more relevant to them. Yay songs!
A5: help to make Ss aware that the music has a message and it is poetry.
A5. Oh, favorite song melody (or rap beat) & make lyrics about what you are studying. Rapping about the water cycle, anyone?
joining in late my kiddos had lots of homework !
A5: Myriad ways. Any topic can be turned into lyrics and singing. I am a proponent of moderation in educational matters.
always a good habit to be in. 😉
A5: Ss can pen a class song; school song; express their displeasure or feelings in regards to events w/in school or book.
Hey there, Carrie! Glad you're here!
Been great dropping in def gonna be a return visit next week! Have a great week all.
Hey Carrie! Long time, no see! ;)
Great Picture and song Vincent Starry Starry night by Don McLean.
I used Disney song lyrics to teach theme kids loved it
NOOOO!!! I'm missing a highly anticipated !!! It's bitter sweet knowing that I'm missing in the name of edtech evangelism!
The / crossover is strong tonight!
Love the idea of a class/school song. https://t.co/r8S85e88Ho
A5: Ss can pen a class song; school song; express their displeasure or feelings in regards to events w/in school or book.
my kids have many videos memorized they love those raps!
Makes me want to watch "Vincent and the Doctor!"
That's a great lesson to do as well.
A5 writing songs is math. Isn't that a content area
You know that you were part of inspiration for , right?
some Ss in our 4th grade did a FL parks project made a welcome to Bill Baggs park parody of Welcome to the Jungle!! Awesome
Spread the love for the sleepless crazies! 😜 https://t.co/BqNXLN0icN
You know that you were part of inspiration for , right?
is this a real thing? When is it?
A5: Need to pay respect to on this. Music not just a side, but main text, worthy of analysis.
doesn't it look amazing? I'msure there are nights I'll be jumping in
I LOVE these guys! Best ever were them, the Swedish Chef, and the mna mna guy!
Will I get proceeds? It would be great also to have it playing on your website or blog.
mine would be around 3ish!
A6: You had me at collaborate. If they collaborate they are going to come up with something even more creative!
definitely - 3:20a to be precise. If I open my eyes and see that, I know the sleeping is over for me
A6. It's like any collaboration--problem solving, compromise, bouncing ideas off each other. Awesome!
And for really old tweeters, who remembers cartoon songs with the bouncing ball over the words?
A6: Who would consider it not to be a benefit? Ss collaborating and creating!! What could be better?
A6 I love having Ss use real or homemade instruments to create sound together. Group achievement is powerful!
Okay, , I love you, love music in the classroom, love all the ideas. It makes me feel like this. Thanks! https://t.co/5FIWUXOTrx
I love seeing them with music and art it makes for great collaboration
I just remembered that a few yrs ago, a group of Ss wrote a class song when we were working on class rules!
A6 Collaboration in music puts an emphasis on listening to all ideas.
My hubby is a musician and I had a particularly musical class 3 yrs ago. Husband came in and helped them record an album!
I have music playing all day in the background unless it distracts my kiddos! Gotta love music!
I also like the idea of a class playlist where each student picks their own theme song.
There's some serious force coming out of the speakers!
That's a great idea also! Even Top Songs of the year! Could document their progress throughout yr.
We're on the cusp of the last Q...
Absolutely ! Music is a universal language, and most certainly has its place in the classroom
Ss have curated Pandora stations each yr - love when currents ref alums by their station
I absolutely believe this ! I always have ESE kids and they always respond to those activities
A6: Self expression, collaboration, making instead of consuming
grew up w/ music always playing. My mom always had the radio on playing:classical & if not good then rock!!
A7 There are kids who don't get a rip about anything BUT music. This is for THEM.
Creators>Consumers - We need to push that as educators.
A7. Ask them what they listen to. If you are able, play some of it. Might be a small way to draw them in.
A7 I think music creation in the classroom could inspire an appreciation for other arts and esp creativity.
A7: music draws in the disengaged Ss b/c they gen are a bit more creative. See things differently. It's all in perspective.
A7 Kids are more cooperative when you meet them at their emotional front door.
Can *always* talk to a S abt music - they articulate prefs, are invested in something important to them https://t.co/NhHHlpxbyp
A7: We all learn in different ways on different days. For some Ss, they can understand or communicate better through music
Printing out & hanging this one up over the copier https://t.co/sYSNhLyX8E
A7 Kids are more cooperative when you meet them at their emotional front door.
It is so needed in our world!! The value is usually under appreciated.
. I don't think there is anything wrong with consuming or curating. All part of growth.
Think of the value of music in movies & even video games. It does draw in the viewers/players.
I think it's about finding a balance. Critical consumption and creating great things to share
Oh for sure, it's def a part of life! But to go on and create something is transcending.
