Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Hi! I'm Beth. Co-founder and lead teacher @go2Science, Using science to improve all subject areas for PreK-2 classrooms. Taught K in Maine for 25 years. In Tennessee this winter. #LATICchat
A1 Open layout with choices in seating as well as work style IE: individual, partner or group. Open also includes access to technology and resources and the teacher. #LATICchat
A1 An equitable learning environment means that all students have access to learning the best way for them and has the ability to demonstrate that knowledge #LATICchat
A1) A UDL where there is a entry point for every student. From students who have just started to grasp a concept to students who are mastering the skills. #LATICchat
A2 Activity lists help impact equity! I'm able to differentiate my activity lists based on Ss needs in a discrete manner. Also, Ss learn to make choices from their list that work best for them #LATICchat
A1: Equity means access for all. Access to equipment, information, time, and learning. Equity can be supported by a collaborative environment of co-learners...teacher included! #LATICchat
A1 creating an equitable environment means having resources available for all learners. It also means that ts anticipate possible gaps in Ss understanding and mindful make adjustments to help Ss overcome. Everyone should be able to successfully complete the task #LATICchat
This is so true ... you can offer several ways to address the same skill to meet the needs of all ... and you can have optional activities for those who may need more background. #LATICchat

A2) I have all 22 students names on magnets on both the Help and Expert boards. It gives all of them a chance to see that we all need help at some point and that Anyone can get to Expert level #LATICchat

A2) An amazing free resource is Seeing AI for the Ipad/Iphone. It can instantaniosly read various pieces of information in the classroom. It helps make the lesson available to everyone #edtechchate#edtech#LATICchat
We have UDL planning sheets that can be used to expand thinking when developing the #LATIC problem-based task and activity list. https://t.co/75UPdWEQWT#LATICchat
A2: Collaborative experiences in the younger grades can build that equity as each has something to contribute. Tech allows for varied tasks allowing varied talents to shine. #LATICchat
A2 Home Groups allow S's to be part of a collective Mini PLN as they need it and decide on their own on the different activities from AL's. This provides equity and also empowers S's to even the playing field to suit their individual needs for achievement. #LATICchat
A2 I think all the structure impact equity. When we build executive functioning students become autonomous and take charge of their learning. #LATICchat
My kinders tackled food security in a way that addressed not only food equity, but also allowed varied talents and abilities to shine. https://t.co/YL0oHUY9Yq#LATICchat
A2 help board/expert board. It makes students learn to advocate for themselves and learn how to be active learners instead of passive learners at all levels of the spectrum.
#LATICchat
A2 The Task (problem that matters to them), rubric (represent their solution in a way that makes sense), SMGL for that push, activity lists (that are scaffolded & differentiated) #LATICchat
A3 Ss need to identify needs of their community to promote equity. Maybe it could be making sure that all children have books to practice reading at home or school supplies. #LATICchat
This is a story of a student who witnessed a man eating from a dumpster when she was five. She asked why? And started an entire movement. https://t.co/LHypzmmdnf If we ask students what they see as problems and why they exist, it may be a good way to start#socialjustic #LATICchat
A3 my son in 1st grade is about to go on a field trip to a school with students that have special needs with games that they created to share and play with the students. I continue to be impressed as a parent and educator.
#LATICchat
This is great ide and something I’m going to try out on Monday. Creating active learners as well as those who can self-advocate is an important soft skill to build in our students #LATICchat
Great point ... executive function should be considered a key foundation for achieving equity ... focus on building those skills. I hear there's a great new book out on that! ;-) #LATICchat
A3b one of my students found a problem on his own that could allow grocery stores to donate more canned goods to food pantries for homeless.
#LATICchat
Love this! Students as "problem-finders, innovators, and entrepreneurs!" A favorite topic of mine ... recently gave a TED-Ed talk on it ...https://t.co/vIr9CWHimQ#LATICchat

A4 I have a few Ss who struggle wtih reading...I use QR codes and recording apps so that they have access to directions even if they don't have access to me. Also, using an app called @Seesaw we have some Ss who have become experts with it, building their confidence #LATICchat
A4) Many students in an economically diverse community don’t have technology at home. What we provide in school levels the playing field somewhat. #LATICchat
A4 background knowledge is always a problem. Some students go to museums and other countries while others don't see past their backyard. Tech allows a leveling playing field of opportunities for world wide exposure.
#LATICchat
While technology will never replace the teacher, it can be used in so many ways to create passion, promote digital literacy and allow for large scale contribution. #LATICchat
A4 tech (when used purposefully) can open doors for students. They have access to the world. They can seen what they have never seen and gain foundational knowledge to build background knowledge. #LATICchat
Massive differences. Just think of the differences between rural areas and urban. I always like to think of it like a both groups trying to read a bus schedule. If the schemas not there, then it is not fair to compare #LATICchat
A4: Technology allows us to melt barriers of time, space, and resources. I designed @go2Science to improve collaboration, expand horizons, and foster critical thinking with only a single device and internet in a classroom. #LATICchat
Some students don't have the background / frame of reference to read texts or engage in content discussions ... a quick video can fill a gap! #LATICchat
The power of technology has opened so many doors and made the world smaller for so many students. We can now take our students to the Louvre and even Skype with other classes. The possibilities are endless with the power of technology. No matter the background #LATICchat
A4) Cloning and flipping a class allows for better quality small group discussions. Building relationships is a powerful tool. #LATICchat It also means S have access to your video multiple times.
I can believe it. We have started to play around with @PlayStation VR and youtube VR to explore BBC worlds and kids trips to schools. The possibilities are going to be endless. #LATICchat#edtechchat

A5 Student & parent surveys. Also, checking in with Ss during activities like snack & morning meeting to learn about what they're doing with their free time #LATICchat
A5 online surveys at the beginning of the year but a deeper answer is to allow students the freedom to seek their own problem. When you learn what a student sees as a problem and how they want to solve it, there is a window into who they are.
#LATICchat
A5: I find just simple talking with the students as they enter or leave the classroom and taking the extra bit of time to engage and find out something about them. I am always learning something new from these chats #LATICchat
So true! Would be so powerful to do this in a Priming Plan -
know them from day one and tailor learning to their needs, passions and interests. #LATICchat
A5) One of our #LATIC teachers begins the year by writing a letter about her self to her students, asking them to write her back ... she culls a lot of data from that. #LATICchat
A5 you have to get to know your Ss by building relationships. Ss learn to communicate w others by engaging in conversations w us. Greet Ss at the door ask about their weekend. That’s how you’ll get to know them #LATICchat
A4 Technology can certainly level the field of play but also can severely tilt it if schools lack Tech and access. Need to break down barriers for all S's. #LATICchat
Yes! We had a T have Ss survey their preferred learning styles and create business cards with the graph on it to hand out to all their teachers. #LATICchat

#LATICchat
A5: Being honest and open with them and showing you care, making mistakes, admitting your wrong leads to positive relationships which can be built upon throughout the year #LATICchat
A5) Interest Inventories are old school but I refer to my students answers all year. The great equalizer is teacher attention to all students.#LATICchat
A5) a lot of teachers greet their Ss at the door.... make small talk as they enter -ask them about their day or their weekend. Show interest and you’ll get interest. #laticchat
A6 success breeds confidence which breeds success. It's important to know when to engineer the situation to give the opportunity for success. You never know when a spark will become a bonfire!
#LATICchat
A6 you have to not only tell them that you believe but show them how to get there. Mini lessons help Ss level up but they have to want to be there. Ss set goals and work to achieve them. I tell them that believing in their abilities is the secret sauce of success #LATICchat
A6 Again, @Seesaw has been a great tool, especially in bolstering some Ss self concept. It's also a great platform to engage Ss especially in challenging areas, and create an authentic environment to share their work in different modalities #LATICchat
And we are back to purposeful facilitation of learning, right? Know what to ask which students and how to respond based upon their needs in the moment. #LATICchat
Interesting idea, I wonder if there is anyone in the @MicrosoftEDU innovator platform that I could tap into for a Skype chat I’ll look this weekend. #LATICchat

I love this statement that greets students as they enter their middle school. How could you not feel good about what is to come? #LATICchat@BPMSPatriots
So important as it can be about more than just grades, shout can see how they are developing and growing their soft skills which will be important later in life #LATICchat
A5) "Leveling Up" -- what game designers know about engaging students (@marcprensky) -- give Ss activities just about their ability level (Csikszentmihalyi) to keep them in flow -- and confident. #LATICchat
A5 Day One et to know you, get to know me activity list is great. But nothing beats talking and more importantly listening to S's regularly. #LATICchat
A6: Many, varied experiences in the kindergarten room allow every student to show the special ways they are smart: writing letters, helping friends, running fast, using screwdrivers, mastering the iPad, and on and on. Everyone is an expert at something! #LATICchat
A7 my school is not from one community so are from different backgrounds, having freedom to approach problems from outside the box makes leadership in adults.
#LATICchat
A7 Ss are being brought up in a competitive culture (school, sports etc.) where from an early age they are assessing their abilities compared to others. LATI allows them to see their own strengths, progress & success #LATICchat
A7: Issues in my community include, hunger, poverty, teen pregnancy, and opioid addiction. Solutions are multi-faceted and work best when a team can address them. Breaking generational poverty and addiction is a team effort. #LATICchat
A6 create an environment where S's are forced to reach higher and farther then they have before because classmates and T's are the safety rope leading the up the rock wall. (Shout out Dan!) #LATICchat
CA Help Ts and Ss find the problems that matter to them, connect w/ experts, create solutions. Maybe several classes K-12 take on different pieces. #LATICchat
CA continue to look for ways to strengthen my use of latic structures to build on Ss strenghts while helping them over come their struggles. #LATICchat
I've turned my attention to expanding horizons and opportunities for learning for students around the globe. If you work with 4-8 year olds, visit https://t.co/pxccTKj9Mr for a free trial. #LATICchat
CQ: amazed at the amount of online resources where we can “take” our students to expose them to different cultures, lifestyles, careers, communities and other classes. I’ve got a lot to go read up on and some videos to watch so I can better implement #LATICchat
Great chat tonight ... the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom IS the equity model for instruction. Thanks for joining in and sharing your ideas.

CA: One of our team members shared this video today; it's worth a watch this week. Powerful food for thought on #equity impact.
