Karen here. So excited about tonight's chat. Thank you, Matt, for hosting. I was a huge fan of superman growing up! #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 31 @ 8:03 PM EDT
Roxana, though tonight I’m Frankenstein’s Monster, YHS Social studies. Favorite costume that remains my go-to is Hermione Granger/Gryffindor Student. #ycsdchat

#ycsdchat Tonight is going to be a chat about the tricks of the trade for being a teacher. So let's start with a question that everyone will be able to relate to...
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: I use my Outlook calendar to keep track of everything! There are several key features including the task list that help me stay on track. And all my devices are synced, making it very accessible. #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:10 PM EDT
#ycsdchat I purposefully set time aside and protect that time for family and friends. Clear boundaries help with my time management.
  • REEdelstein Oct 31 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: When it comes to time management, I try to make anything I’m going to grade for accuracy easy to grade on my end. When I’m assessing recalling, I usually do matching or multiple choice. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:11 PM EDT
This is a goal of mine every year. And I think I'm getting better at it! #ycsdchat
    • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:10 PM EDT

  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Hi! April Insley Librarian at YES. A1: I make lists to keep me focused. Also, I listen to my limits. There's always going to be another paper to grade or lesson to plan, but you have to know when to stop and take care of yourself. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 31 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1–up to date calendar and to-do lists—number in order of completing the “big rocks” first and then move on down...do not let email or social media in the way of completing the “big rocks” #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1: Checking email can be time consuming so I try to set aside periodic checks during the day. I also try to limit social media and only access at designated times. #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:14 PM EDT
#ycsdchat A1 after a while fitbits tell us to get up and walk if we are still too long. There should be a teacherbit that tells us, "put away the papers and grades".
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:14 PM EDT
It's about prioritizing and some of the minor distractions during the day are not priorities. I appreciate your remind of the "big rocks." #ycsdchat

Both can be a real time sucker...I turn off the push notifications during the work day for this very purpose as they are designed to catch your eye and get you to start clicking #ycsdchat

  • mike_myoung Oct 31 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A1: Mike Young from Tabb Middle. I try to bring home just enough to do for an hour. I work for about an hour each night. After that it will have to wait. #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:17 PM EDT
#ycsdchat I think this next question is going to begin being relevant starting tomorrow.
  • TiannaSAnthony - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:18 PM EDT
#ycsdchat A1: Teachers are multi taskers! I keep a mean planner that would let anyone stalk my life. It keeps me organized and focused. I Just dumped the candy bag and starting bedtime routines with the little one. So I’m in and out of the chat.

  • hball1025 Oct 31 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2-definitely try to incorporate more movement and hands on activities at high school level like foldable creations or opportunities to for more collaboration and “instructional noise” so it’s not just “noise” #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Oct 31 @ 8:20 PM EDT
#ycsdchat children should be encouraged to have a time to share their excitement then be directed to focus on school work.

  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: Great question! I would love to hear from some of our dynamic teachers! #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: Authentic learning experiences such as PBL. Students engage when the work is meaningful. #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 31 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: I barter with my students. If we get through the notes, then we can do a Kahoot or some other fun review activity. They’re still learning, but they’re more motivated to get to the things they enjoy. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: Stick to routines, but add a little holiday magic. I used to play instrumental Christmas music in the background during independent or small group time (after Thanksgiving). Also, I like to use a yule log video for a cozy silent reading time #ycsdchat
  • LBDonatelli Oct 31 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: I planned more hands on activities but that kind of match the theme of the holiday. This week we read atomic models to decode a secret message - not Halloween but mysterious #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:23 PM EDT
#ycsdchat A2: So as I read the tweets, it looks like what everyone is building up to a consensus that "motivations equals engagement".
  • mike_myoung Oct 31 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: I try to make things just a bit more engaging and I often overplan so there is little if any down time. Downtime around the holidays is a recipe for disaster #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2: Service learning projects are great during the holidays. Students are making a difference. Who isn't motivated by that! Plan a Mini-Service-Learning Project for the Holidays | TeachHUB https://t.co/VJCZQGNuz5 #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 31 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Over planning is my trademark #ycsdchat
    In reply to @mike_myoung
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I call this "bundling." Combine a fun activity with something not so exciting. This is a key strategy for getting the work done! Thanks for sharing! #ycsdchat
    • REEdelstein Oct 31 @ 8:21 PM EDT

#ycsdchat The next trick can be difficult...
  • LBDonatelli Oct 31 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: SOOO hard! I’d like to see other’s strategies because unless it pops up on my twitter feed, I rarely get caught up what’s new #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 31 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: I still keep in contact with my education professors and my classmates from grad school to see what they’re doing and what they’re investigating. I also keep tabs on what my high school teachers are doing, and if I can incorporate their practices into my lessons. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 31 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3–Twitter PLN is great place for staying current, ASCD is my other go to for articles and books related to trends and research in education as well as Education Week. I’m a voracious reader of anything pertinent to education research and trends #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 31 @ 8:31 PM EDT
I like to use @Twitter and I also attend the @edcampEVA session in the spring. Both are very engaging. I also spend time on the website: https://t.co/T3eBkrwclw Lots of great ideas there and its FREE! #ycsdchat

  • TiannaSAnthony - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#ycsdchat the #VDOE has different types of information, news, and resources posted to keep teachers in the know. It’s not always the first resource considered but it really could be.
  • ElizabethLeste6 Oct 31 @ 8:35 PM EDT
I keep current in my field as an artist and I search the internet for new ideas for my art students so we dont do the same thing every year. #ycsdchat
  • FalconsYHS Oct 31 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 Edutopia is a favorite, and I rely on my listservs. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3: Blogs are great too @cultofpedagogy is one of my favs! #ycsdchat
  • KMBressler Oct 31 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3 I like to ask other educators what they are reading. A lot of schools do book studies or book clubs and even if I don’t have time to read the book it gives me a feel for trends I need to pay attention too. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:37 PM EDT

#ycsdchat The committees I work with have "teams" set up on office 365 to share ideas. That would be something to think about for content teachers or grade levels across the division to share up to date research and practices.

#ycsdchat so let's move from tricks to the treats!!
  • mike_myoung Oct 31 @ 8:44 PM EDT
This year the focus of our PLC meeting and data conversation is about formative rather than summative assessment. We are trying to catch them before the big test rather than try to come back to it after the unit is finished. #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:45 PM EDT
  • LBDonatelli Oct 31 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A4: So many things!! I’ve been super focused this year on more hands-on activities, labs, and authentic learning experiences. It has transformed my classroom! I’ve even started “flipping” my classroom to fit in more during class time. #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Oct 31 @ 8:45 PM EDT

Every member of the leadership team was given a little YES Falcons notepad and encouraged to write notes to our colleagues to let them know we appreciate them. I like writing those notes and putting them in people's boxes. #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Oct 31 @ 8:54 PM EDT
#ycsdchat Our Principal sends out a weekly calendar along with kudos and photos of the great things going on in our building. We send her tidbits she can highlight each week so all staff can see our successes.

A5 - former districts had shining star and rising tide awards that peers could be nominated for, personal notes of appreciation, thank you notes, shout outs #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 31 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A5: At @TabbMSfamily we can nominate our peers to be recognized at a faculty meeting. Those people get various goodies like things for the classroom or even a box or Raisinetts for "Rasin the bar" #ycsdchat
  • LBDonatelli Oct 31 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A5: twitter shoutout, a personal note, an email #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 31 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A5: I have set a goal to be better at this. There are so many opportunities to recognize each other's hard work and commitment, but sometimes the busyness of the day distracts me from doing this. #ycsdchat
  • MattTayman Oct 31 @ 8:58 PM EDT
