  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:36 PM EDT
A1 I think all stakeholders involved in Deaf education should be involved in policy decisions. But primarily, Deaf, HOH, and Deaf disabled folks should be there. Because it’s about them. #DeafEd

#DeafEd It's great to see so many people here! I'm looking forward to seeing all your thoughts!
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 7:43 PM EDT
A2: #DDBDDHH individuals have “been there done that.” They can give great insight on what was effective or not. I just wish it weren’t so hard to get them involved. #deafed
    In reply to @TwylaLoftin
  • dplusbruno Oct 11 @ 7:43 PM EDT
Yes - I’m continuously sharing do’s and don’ts with my hearing peers at @ColumbiaSSW b/c you never know if they ends up working with them! #DeafEd
    In reply to @TwylaLoftin, @ColumbiaSSW
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:43 PM EDT
A2: Honestly, it's presumptuous and patronizing to make decisions for a group while excluding them from the process. #deafed
  • Charlee56629325 Oct 11 @ 7:43 PM EDT
A2. Because they’re the ones who understand it best. We understand the impacts of polices that are put in place. #deafed
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:43 PM EDT

  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:49 PM EDT
Great question! I bet many people need this answered! Thanks Tamara for answering it! #DeafEd
    In reply to @Charlee56629325
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:49 PM EDT
and now that you mentioned it, it's equally important that the full spectrum of #DDBDDHH are represented. #DeafEd
    In reply to @Charlee56629325
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:50 PM EDT
Q3: What factors do you think contribute to the inclusion or exclusion of #DDBDDHH people from the decision making process? #DeafEd
  • HeidiGASL Oct 11 @ 7:50 PM EDT
Lately, I've seen LD added at the end for late-deafened. #DeafEd
    In reply to @tcsamaripa, @Charlee56629325
  • thesearchforan2 Oct 11 @ 7:50 PM EDT
A1: The child should be given the basic human right, to be involved in the decision making. I do strongly believe a deaf individual’s personal experience is a vital factor to their needs, and should be weighed in; in order for them to attain their highest potential.#DeafEd
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 7:50 PM EDT
A3: Exclusion: lack of understanding of need; difficulties in finding #DDBDDHH individuals who are willing to be involved. Inclusion: Educating the right people so they understand the importance. #deafed
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:50 PM EDT
A2: Even if Deaf people are added, most of the time they are white, #deafed
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:51 PM EDT
    A3: privilege #DeafEd
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:51 PM EDT
That's a good one! It is ever expanding to be inclusive of all! #DeafEd
    In reply to @HeidiGASL, @tcsamaripa, @Charlee56629325
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:51 PM EDT
A3: also, that good old white, straight, hereto, Hearing male majority. #DeafEd
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:52 PM EDT
A3: to be perfectly honest, trauma. Committees often include majority of Hearing folks-why sit in a group to be pushed down? #DeafEd
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:53 PM EDT
This is why we HAVE to get this changed! #DeafEd
    In reply to @tcsamaripa
  • HeidiGASL Oct 11 @ 7:53 PM EDT
A3 (1): Often those that are making policy or other decisions are not in the #DeafEd field. Therefore, they don't even consider the need to include them. Sort of like legislators making education policy decisions without input from educators.
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:53 PM EDT
A3: But really, it’s just this erroneous assumption that other people know better than the people living that life. Applies to many marginalized groups. #DeafEd
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 7:54 PM EDT
I've been a part of groups where we spend so much time finding the "right" mix of individuals, that we never get anything done. I would love suggestions on how to avoid this! #deafed
    In reply to @tcsamaripa
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:54 PM EDT
    AMEN!!! #DeafEd
    In reply to @signingsusie, @tcsamaripa
  • HeidiGASL Oct 11 @ 7:54 PM EDT
A3 (2): OR the policy/decision makers are in #DeafEd field and have audist mentality. They think they don't need deaf and can decide for deaf
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 7:54 PM EDT
I feel like this every time I’m handed new curriculum and forced to use it with my kids when it doesn’t fit. #DeafEd
    In reply to @HeidiGASL
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:55 PM EDT
you can't please everyone, but be conscientious of who's on the team, and if someone needs to be included, add them--or at least reach out to get their input. #DeafEd

  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:57 PM EDT
Q4 is coming up in 1 minute #DeafEd.
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:57 PM EDT
I've noticed that it tends to be the same people over and over. We need to find how to be more inclusive of a much wider range of people and accomplish the goals of the committee/meeting/. #DeafEd
    In reply to @tcsamaripa, @signingsusie
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:58 PM EDT
Q4: When committees are formed, how can we ensure more #DDBDDHH people are involved from the start? #DeafEd
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 7:58 PM EDT
Very true! We are wearing out those hearing and deaf folks who are a part of every committee! #deafed
    In reply to @TwylaLoftin, @tcsamaripa
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 7:58 PM EDT
A4: Find #DDBDDHH individuals who are active in the areas the committees focus on and who are passionate about the topic. Ask other committee members for suggestions. Be active in the deaf community so we get to know many #DDBDDHH individuals! #deafed
  • tcsamaripa Oct 11 @ 7:59 PM EDT
I never understand this--but those in the field have the mentality that an "outside" view has benefits. #deafed
    In reply to @HeidiGASL
  • TwylaLoftin Oct 11 @ 7:59 PM EDT

    In reply to @DivergentDeafEd
  • thesearchforan2 Oct 11 @ 8:06 PM EDT
A2. I do not believe that Being a teacher can be separated, from desiring a child reaches their fullest potential. I imagine a teacher of the Deaf would “know” and be able to articulate via advocacy; the specific needs of a deaf student. Teachers can be advocates too. #DeafEd
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 8:06 PM EDT

does your area keep track of alumni? Do you have any strong student organizations? or teacher groups? #DeafEd
    In reply to @Charlee56629325, @signingsusie
  • signingsusie Oct 11 @ 8:11 PM EDT
That is true in so many areas. Encourage your admins to bring in deaf professionals to present during inservice, connect with resources like ASL storytelling and invite admins to observe. That could be a start. #deafed
    In reply to @Charlee56629325
  • AmandaEHutch Oct 11 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A5: involve the community, invite members to events, round tables, town hall meetings. Encourage participation through inclusion. #DeafEd
  • dplusbruno Oct 11 @ 8:11 PM EDT

Many #Deaf adults are willing to Skype/ video call with #DDBDDHH students. I LOVE doing this with my class. Have them tel ASL stories, read books, talk about their profession, etc. Have your district PR person contact local media to have them there for 1 call. Great PR! #DeafEd
