It's Brooke here tonight on the mic for #i2sdale in Springdale, AR. #moedchat I'm one of the conference co-coordinators for the Innovation Institute and Instructional Tech Spec. for #eMINTS
Meredith joining #MOEdchat from beautiful SW Florida. I moderate #BookCampPD each Saturday morning and enjoy learning from others. Terrific that we are going to talk about different topics tonight!
A1: No, but I do sometimes forget that I don't have one in my office, so I often find myself asking #Alexa to do things... then remember I'm not at home. #moedchat
A1 I have a #googleaiy in my room, kids use it a little bit, last night some after-school kids were using it to find out who the smartest person in the world is, I should’ve @IFTTT it to say me… #MOEdchat
A1. We have two of them in our house. I love 'em! The larger of the two has amazing sound quality - Ultimate Ears https://t.co/RI54pKACp1 I think every music room should have one! #MOEdchat
A1: No, but I do sometimes forget that I don't have one in my office, so I often find myself asking #Alexa to do things... then remember I'm not at home. #moedchat
Mine is linked to my account, so it presents some issues with using my name or calendar, but the kids don’t seem to mind, they like that they know my first name #MOEdchat
A1: I don’t have one at home or work. But I do awkwardly “Hey Siri” into my watch to set reminders when I’m out running around in buildings 🤷🏼♀️ #MOEdchat
A1: Only Google Docs voice to text. I got a free Google Home at last years Google I/O. Ss couldn't resist clowning. With the integration for phone calls I opted to put it away. #moedchat
Hey #i2sdale peeps...have you signed up yet? You better not miss out on this AMAZING team of students joining us all the way from NW MO. Sign up for their session "Adventure is Out There" https://t.co/UU38UGxH63#EduAR#moedchat#oklaed
My students & I will be joining you at #i2sdale all the way from NW MO! Can’t wait!!! Just booked our hotel #hornetsr2@moedchat (the line up looks awesome btw)

For instance, "Alexa, what is the temperature in Kansas City (where Tyler lives). Then what is the temperature in Cario, Egypt?" Compare/contrast - why are these two cities different? Engagement. #MOEdchat
I'm at the surface level of this concept: set a timer, check the weather for recess, schedule an appointment, find the answer to a quick question, etc. I'd also like to hear some deeper applications #MOedchat
A2: Go check the #whatisschool stream from today. All about AI. Google's products are drive by AI. A clustter of computers that learn from another. This type of intelligence can only make our current products better. I think. #moedchat
It is a faster system for googling random ?s like Meredith said. Keeps the convo flowing rather than stopping to type it in & look it up. #moedchat (plus I love a classroom full of music when appropriate)
A2. AI is the wave of the future. Understanding how it can be used to assist children in their learning is key. Learning as much as we can helps us make better decisions about when and where to use it best. #MOEdchat
I like to use it to show kids how to leverage Tech to fit their own needs, by using @IFTTT and other Google skills, make it useful to them beyond just turning on lights or finding basic facts #MOEdchat
A2: Not really a concern, but I wonder about the necessary steps we'd need to include so that Ss develop the same critical thinking skills about the information accessed just as they do with any other online tool #MOedchat
A2. Until an earlier chat this evening I didn't understand that it is what drives many programs to adjust to a student's level and moves them forward or back depending on their understanding. Using this WITH teacher help is a game changer! #MOEdchat
You could use it to do a Breakout type of lesson, basic fact finding, set reminders or tasks, timers, there are a lot of things, I think if we all know what is capable, we could leverage it to our own classroom needs #MOEdchat
Maybe we could develop ways to use this on a deeper level!!! I’m totally at the same point as you. Wonder how we could push ourselves next . . . Could make for an awesome journey to share on Twitter if we had some initial ideas . . . #moedchat
A2: AI is making adaptive software even more advanced...personalizing learning for kids. Assessment programs, curriculum materials...AI is impacting all of it. #MOEdchat
A2: Go check the #whatisschool stream from today. All about AI. Google's products are drive by AI. A clustter of computers that learn from another. This type of intelligence can only make our current products better. I think. #moedchat
A2: When you read an eBook they are analyzing your behavior. Boredom, asleep... Imagine applying personalized learning to a Ss day with this tech! #moedchat
A. 2 "When facts become so widely available and instantly accessible, each one becomes less valuable. What begins to matter more is the ability to place these facts in context and to deliver them with emotional impact." - Daniel Pink

A2: For AI to work effectively, these programs and platforms have to collect a LOT of data on our kids. We have to be so aware and mindful of what programs we use and how they are storing and using our kids info. Not everything is ok to use. #MOEdchat

A3: A great question! It's been amazing seeing kids so galvanized and interested in social issues. A voice is a beautiful thing to find. Like with anything, modeling appropriate behavior is so important. #MOedChat

It’d be fun to build an entire @breakoutEDU around its use to play at beg of yr in order for kids to understand its full capabilities for the entire year! #moedchat

A3: Ts should model appropriate actions and schools should give Ss the opportunity to use their voices. If they aren't given the space and time to use their voices, they will never learn to do it in a positive manner. #moedchat

Totally possible, I use @IFTTT to make it respond to specific questions with the answer I choose, so if they ask it who is the best teacher, it will say Mr. Wall… But you could apply that any way you want #MOEdchat

A3. Challenging question! Seems students would first need to begin with discovering their voice. Begins in kindergarten and proceeds - ah, but we rarely have students talk so this is quite a problem! #MOEdchat
A3: I agree with @MrsDurantWHS on the time and space thing. Growing up is messy. Growing up is hard. We shouldn't make it harder by pushing aside the ideas kids struggle with. School was made for messy. Draw them in, don't push them away. #MOedChat
A3: I believe we have to ensure the safety of all first and foremost. We should also encourage Ss to think of constructive ways to voice their opinions. And we also have a responsibility to make sure all voices feel respected #moedchat

I think it is ok for some things but I don't like the idea of modeling someone/Alexa doing our thinking for us instead of digging in and finding the answers. #moedchat
I'm all for convenience but seems too easy and maybe that's the direction we are heading but seems like that's why our kids don't persevere and have grit to make it through a challenging situation. #moedchat
A3. Giving Ss the opportunity to voice their thoughts in a safe place with their peers — likeminded and otherwise. Their thoughts are valid. I believe the ss in my classroom will solve the problems of tomorrow...but how if I don’t let THEM talk, share, ask questions. #MOedchat
A3: At the most basic level, too, ensuring we have a culture of mutual respect between Ss and Ts. At the end of the day, kids need to know that we see them, we hear them, and that what they say means something. #MOEdChat
A. 3 Listening to students is key. Many fear student activism b/c they fear a loss of control. I think if we listen to Ss we can work together, not against each other. #moedchat
Alexa can find simple answers - allowing educators to take the time for the higher level reasoning, problem solving, in depth discussions about these simple facts. #MOEdchat
I think it is ok for some things but I don't like the idea of modeling someone/Alexa doing our thinking for us instead of digging in and finding the answers. #moedchat
I am all for tech in the classroom just seems we are all dependent on our devices, including me for those easy answers. Like I said it could be a good thing. I never thought about having an Alexa in my classroom. #moedchat
A3: Student activism can be supported without any of us stepping into muddled politics by empowering students with the language skills, critical thinking skills, and collaborative skills they need in order to express themselves and pursue change #MOedchat
A3 Maybe stop criticizing them like the #parkland kids? Maybe just listen? “Could it be, that the boys and girls, are trying to be heard, above your noise?” -Johnny Cash “What is Truth” #moedchat
I attended the Microsoft #E2 conference in Singapore with 91 countries represented. Translator was our salvation. My group had three languages. #moedchat

Exposing Ss to things that create that dissonance inside of themselves is key. Getting them to question the why, or how allows them to consider other possibilities or outcomes. #MOedchat
A4. I retired after 40 years and I am probably more passionate now about helping others. I created a website recently that explains it https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A#MOEdchat
A3: Student activism can be supported without any of us stepping into muddled politics by empowering students with the language skills, critical thinking skills, and collaborative skills they need in order to express themselves and pursue change #MOedchat
Read! Participate in twitter chats! Go to local #edcamp PD! Collaborate. Picking up #tlap always revitalizes me and I just finished @shakeuplearning which has definitely re-energized me! #moedchat
A4 I get to do little side projects with small groups of kids, they come up with such great solutions to problems, makes me strive to learn more along with them #moedchat#batmanedu
A4: Get confident enough to say what you believe, stay humble enough to always learn. Build a team, step away sometimes. Never forget the mission. #moedchat
@higginsb signing off. Gotta jump out of here but Thx #moedchat for the things to think about and sharing all your ideas. Would love to see you at #i2sdale in June.
A4: Being intentional about building connections with my teachers and students. Relationships are key. Live in the moment and enjoy the journey. Celebrate learning. #moedchat
A4. As a student teacher I reflected daily in a journal. As a 2nd year teacher I still do this on a daily basis. There’s good to see in every single day, and always a way to grow. Keeping the joy comes from reminding myself of my WHY I do what I do. #MOedchat
A3: At the most basic level, too, ensuring we have a culture of mutual respect between Ss and Ts. At the end of the day, kids need to know that we see them, we hear them, and that what they say means something. #MOEdChat
Oh man... this is a tough one! They all inspire me in different ways too. Freedom Writers was released while I was in high school and made me decide teaching was what I HAD to do - so, I'll go with that one! #moedchat
A4 When I collaborate with others to develop new ideas or challenge my beliefs, I always walk away feeling revitalized/joyful. Another way is to simply take a moment to connect with a child: hugs & high fives. I continue to believe that education is the field for me. #MOedchat
A1 no but the concept of integrating some technologysuch as iPads or computers should be enough. Really how beneficial could Alexa be to a classroom? #edfb4338#moedchat
A2 AI could be beneficialbut you would have to limit the availability in the room. For example who can use it and if you have a sub would it work for them and can you keep the students from abusing the system? #edfb4338#moedchat
A6. Building a stop motion station, keeping my green screen up year round, modeling AR for fellow teachers with my students’ work in the hallway, running the 3D printer daily, videochatting outside my state weekly, & using my GoogleHome more #moedchat
A4 as an educators out must enjoy what you do from the beginning. But from conversations it can be repetitive and mundane at times but every now and then there’s one or two students that are able to reignite the flame that you had from the beginning. #edfb4338#moedchat
A6: As more & more students struggle with handwriting and fine motor, I would like to improve on interventions for that AND integrate more speech-to-text capabilities in writing. 1st graders have the stories...it is getting them on the page that is the struggle!#moedchat
I used Peardeck in D.C. Attendees seemed to enjoy being able to comment & ask Qs w/o holding up the presentation and being able to linger on slides or move ahead. Key: use what we want them to try. #moedchat
I think that if you look deeper into the adaptability of these devices, you can find really creative ways to do things that you would normally do (through voice control), but you need to be careful about what accounts are linked to them #MOEdchat
