The Breakfast Club โ #BFC530 โ is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri โ 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Great. Thanks. Lots of spring cleaning even though the weather wasn't really spring. ;-) Don't get to see my grandkids till the end of the month. So thankful for FaceTime. Thanks for asking. #BFC530
Everyone has voice. Options for quiet students include Google Classroom ask a question. @FlipGrid great too. F2F asking during walkabout while Ss are working. #BFC530
Cirlces work great, every S checks in-every voice is heard and respected! #bfc530 (needs to be modeled and clearly explained first, but after that, kids seem eager to participate!) ๐
I used to act as moderator, making sure participation was relatively equal, but that felt forced. Today, I would take advantage of online tools for back-channel discussion and discussion outside classroom, to encourage multiple options for participation. #bfc530
That's my life. My daughter an I got pulled over by the police once and she was carrying drawn syringes for some animal injections we had just picked up from the vet. Took some explaining #bfc530
Morning ! Another long day ahead of packing and 4 hours driving, so since the kiddos don't need to get the bus for 2 hours I think I'm going back to sleep. But wanted to say hi and hope everyone has the bestest of days today !! #bfc530
Sometimes Ss get used to their peers doing the thinking and talking...Iโve got to hold each and every Ss accountable for sharing and doing their share of the academic work! #BFC530
#bfc530 I spend a lot of time teaching how to listen. What does it look like? What are you doing while you're listening? What questions can you ask the speaker? Tough stuff for 5yr olds.
Let's see...examples include students designing our projects, selecting the scaffolding they need, creating assessments/rubrics, ideas for how to rearrange the space to maximize learning, student designed labs...basically anything to foster a true S-centered environment. #bfc530
Having a voice in K class discussions is about helping students make meaningful connections to whatever we may be discussing. Giving them โthink timeโ also helps. When they know what they share is valued, they jump right in! #bfc530
Students usually freewrite first to discover and deepen their thinking, instead of only having the attention-seekers who shoot their hands up fastest be the ones to share. We also use structured discussion protocols for pairs, groups, and the whole class. #bfc530
Yes!!!! We talk about how you hear to listen, not to respond, and if your hand is up before someone is done talking, then you are not listening to what they have to say. Very hard in grade 3 #bfc530
I like triad questioning - one S answers, asd 2nd "do you agree? why or why not?" 3rd "can you add something to that?" They have to truly listen to each other, not just the teacher #bfc530
Good morning. #bfc530 we have table sized discussions then larger ones w/ # heads. We do fishbowls, inside out circles, etc. but itโs still a challenge
Good morning crew! Up early today with a horsey day of galloping cross country ahead! Itโs been a week of appointments, yesterday was grading and vet appointments. Today is for me! #SpringBreak2k18#bfc530
I agree about back channeling. Allows everyone to have a voice who wants one. I also try to give out paragraphs that address some of the issues we discuss. Some students feel more comfortable & express themselves clearer by writing #bfc530

Class discussions are tough ... knowing your kids is key ... which ones are not joining in because they do not know or just because they are quiet. #bfc530

The key to this question (IMO) is ensuring that you have built strong relationship foundations based on open trust, where every student feels completely safe to express her/his opinion. Then it happens organically and does not seem forced. #bfc530

Teachersโ mindfulness is so important. Whose voices do we hear? Whose are missing? Are racial or gender dynamics accounting for that? What does โparticipationโ mean beyond talking in a whole-class discussion? What can we do to encourage and honor more studentsโ voices? #bfc530
So true about relationships. Always great to see quiet kids begin to speak up as the year goes on. As a teacher it makes you feel like you past the "test" and they feel safe to respond #bfc530

Model honoring the variety of ways to bring out S voice-at the 2nd grade level, practice, exposure, more practice is necessary for the dev of sharing, conversing, listening and most importantly , respectful of all views~ esp when they differ #bfc530
3 main strategies:
1. Turn & talk moments with a partner
2. When soliciting answers from whole class "tell me something you heard from one of your group members"
3. @PearDeck ๐ let's us see an answer from every single student every time!
#bfc530
I've got one too. It's taken all year but she will sometimes participate in choral activities now like our alphabet chant. It's so hard to get her to speak, even one on one. #bfc530
Excellent point! Gallery walks are really powerful...where one student can show and explain what they are doing. Allows every student a chance to defend what they are doing...enables critical thinking, etc. #bfc530
I think itโs both: trust and a thoughtful structure for discussion. And theyโre linked: students trust us more when they see us structuring class time to elicit meaningful and inclusive discussion, AND they share more when they have meaningful & trusting relationships. #bfc530
Give lots of different ways to participate and donโt do the same thing every time. It could be circles, could be opportunities to make small groups within the larger conversation, could be quick online polling or checks for understanding, could be a fist to 5 check in. #bfc530
So Iโm guessing most of you donโt โcold call...โ I still use it sporadically to keep kids on their toes- I will give any kid who is nervous the question ahead of time , as a โheads up.โ #BFC530
The trick is (for me at least) is to always assume that I still have work to do to keep building that trust with each student. It's a continuous process. I do, however, ask peers to observe my classes and offer feedback on where I should focus more work. #bfc530
We must model using our voices, sharing ourselves, if we want kids to do the same! Be the mirror that reflects that which you wish to see :) Have a terrific Thursday tribe! ๐#bfc530
When I have a student like this, I always fear trauma somewhere. This year my silent student is different, very artistic so lots of drawn responses. I long for others to hear her voice but she isnโt ready. #bfc530
I think cold call is valid. It makes every student need to think of a response, instead of some students relying on those who raise their hands, but I like the concern for the nervous or shy student. #bfc530
Indeed! If you look at any organization that thrives on innovation (e.g. IDEO), trust, free and open sharing of ideas, and a culture of collaboration are the keys to their success! That's the goal for my classroom. Always. #bfc530
I was this s in school. Sometimes u just need to let them find their own voice & confidence. Keep giving praise & let her know she is valued. I have a lot of empathy for these Ss & talk a lot to them about how to be themselves in a system that always wants them to share. #bfc530

Thanks for the great chat this morning - I saved new ideas, dusted off forgotten ideas and am ready to face the day with pockets full of strategies! Have a great day everyone! #bfc530
Itโs why I never gave participation points or felt upset if a kid was quiet. As long as I knew they understood the material, had the opportunity to participate in their own way, & felt valued and engaged then they could step in and out of their comfort zone as they liked. #BFC530
My 15 yr old is quite quiet. Kids think she is shy or that she doesnโt like them. Really, itโs because she doesnโt know what to say to people she is not friends with. She is great in drama with a script to follow. #BFC530
Genius Hour projects. Mini assessment tool with @Flipgrid for homework. @MrAlgebraNelson just showed me yesterday how to incorporate circles within the class to help my restorative practice. #bfc530

During whole group discussions, Turn & Talk greatly helps ensure all Ssโ are actively engaged in the thinking & talking out loud, even if ยซย onlyย ยป to one. https://t.co/J0WzTNoR6qโฆ.#bfc530

Capturing Ssโ thinking (during whole or small group work) motivates Ss by showing them their thinking matters & that participating is more than giving right answer. It motivates ยซย unusual suspectsย ยป to particip. when they see their words & names annotated on chart paper. #bfc530
