Today we are discussing Digital Learning Environments That Work for Kids as a way to bring attention to Digital Learning Day that is is taking place on February 22 #DLDay#Satchathttps://t.co/Lza6WQeJD2
A1: I think there needs to be a growth mindset culture- where everyone is learning and taking meaningful risks together (educators and students) #satchat
A1: Good classroom routines are important. Procedures for distributing laptops, steps for turning in digital work, computer logins, etc. Without established procedures, the “digital” can quickly get in the way of the “learning” #satchat
A1. Need to have mindset to step out of the comfort of the familiar to using digital tools where appropriate...start with a few and grow! ID -"who are my risk-takers?". Provide PD to show where DL can be used to foster rich learning experiences. #satchat
A1: Infrastructure, shared vision for learning, student voice & ownership of learning are needed to ensure digital learning environments work for students #satchat
There needs to be the infrastructure, plan, and training to support the environment. It can't just be another tool to do the same thing in a different way. #satchat
A1: infrastructure. Not only tech infrastructure but also practical and useful devices as well as extensive PD for teachers on how to teach using devices. Must be purposeful and meaningful. #satchat
A1: A culture of risk-taking and failing forward. If admin does not provide support and a culture where this is acceptable, then teachers will be hesitant to step outside their comfort zone. #satchat
Apologies for not being able to join #satchat this morning. Since you are discussing digital learning environments, I wanted to offer these two ‘resources’ for your collective consideration. Best wishes for a great discussion about such a timely topic! #tech
A1: A shared mission of what the tech will be used for, infrastructure in the schools, time for Ss to learn skills, and PD for Ts , and, and and... #satchat
A1 Strong infrastructure, hopefully 1:1, a teacher who understands pedagogy of using tech to create not consume & finally where Ss voice/choice is honored #satchat
The first thing isn’t sexy, but it’s crucial: a solid infrastructure. There must be excellent WiFi, hard wiring, and plans for troubleshooting. #satchat
A1: Teachers need a solid understanding of outcomes - what they want students to learn & do - before focusing on the tech. Tech should only make it better - and kids will likely make it so. #satchat
A1: Having teachers who “buy in” and believe in what they’re doing. Nothing sinks success quicker than a teacher who isn’t happy! Also, make sure the teacher (newbie or oldie) has a curriculum to follow so they’re aware of the path. #SatChat
A1 Strong infrastructure, hopefully 1:1, a teacher who understands pedagogy of using tech to create not consume & finally where Ss voice/choice is honored #satchat
Good morning #satchat! Dru here from Ohio. Proud principal of @HeritageMS_WCS in @WCSOH. Eager 2 learn from my peeps in the Twittersphere this morning!
A1 Ss need to be taught good guidelines and rules for being digital citizens safely before diving into digital learning. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie
At the basic level networking and supports need to be in place for kids to learn digitally. After that a mindset that these are important skills. #satchat
A1 a excellent implementation plan, a strong infrastructure to support the technology, plenty of HIGH quality PD for teachers prior to deployment and excited staff and kids! Also great marketing doesn’t hurt #Satchat
A1: there needs to be a culture of where adults are using technology in meaningful ways (learning, trying, taking risks). and demonstrating how to be good digital citizens. #Satchat
A1 Sound pedagogical practices that are looking for enhancement as well as a clear plan with clear expectations and implementation strategy - good professional learning helps too #satchat
A1- we need infrastructure and hardware. Then we need training for Ts to set up experiences for Ss. Finally or actually for starter all stakeholders need a #growthmindset#satchat
A1: In order for digital learning environments to work for kids a strong pre existing relationship must be prevalent. Without strong connections educators are wasting their time. #satchat
A1
A-Need to be clear about purpose and how EdTech will improve Pedagogy rather than replace it!
B-Upskilling of staff before the technology gets deployed
C-Preparing the parent & student community
D- Infrastructure. Do the spend, otherwise it will fall over
#satchat
A1: Discussions around expectations and how we use digital tools responsibly-what does a digital learning environment look/sound like? #satchat#studentvoice
A1: For digital learning, you need bandwidth, devices, admin/district support, and SAMR. #satchat But MOST of all-Roll with it and learn w/ Ss without fear of failure.
#satchat Ts need PD opportunities to continue growth in the digital field, classrooms need established routines, and each lesson with digital technology needs to have a clear purpose- models and examples help! I love to have tutorials available for Ss to refer to when needed.
Apologies for not being able to join #satchat this morning. Since you are discussing digital learning environments, I wanted to offer these two ‘resources’ for your collective consideration. Best wishes for a great discussion about such a timely topic! #tech
A1 Plan for strategic incorporation of tech, planned and implemented procedures for Ss to engage in with tech, a plan B if the tech resource requires troubleshooting #satchat
A1: The primary precursor to a successful learning environment of any kind = a clear WHY via a shared vision between and among all who are involved in its learning ecosystem. #firstWHYthenHOW#satchat
A1 You need to start with an open and risk-taking attitude. Be ready for anything. Havebwhyever texh available and hopefully good wifi. A variety if tools is important. Focus on student collaboration and doing work differently. Don’t repeat traditional methods. #satchat
Yes! Getting them beyond the exciting so they can see the benefits and pitfalls. I remember the first day my Ss used laptops on the desks. Some of that excitement never goes away. #satchat
A1: You need an environment where you have the tech resources available & staff that are willing to explore, learn and engage Ss in rich learning tasks using digital tools #samr#Satchat
A1: Just like with a regular classroom: expectations, procedures, safety measures, and a pretty solid network that can go beyond the needs of the school . #satchat
A1 a strong learning non-digital learning environment is needed before you introduce digital learning environment. Bad practices can just multiply #satchat
#satchat A1 What needs to be in place is the same as it is for any other #lesson: purpose, respect, #collaboration, an understanding of our #students and where they are
A1: Digital learning requires a culture that embraces play and playful thinking. Risks and failure are part of the experience; questions and feedback are essential. #confidence#growth#satchat
A1: The pedagogy should drive the technology. It’s important to consider whether the technology is enhancing or detracting from the learning. I’m a Computer Science teacher. I love technology but sometimes paper and pencil is the way to go. #satchat
A1 game plan that allows students to grow...devices that meets their needs and technical support, so that those great ideas don't stall due to problems beyond our control. #satchat
A1 In order for any learning environment—digital or physical—to work for kids, we need to consider how they will relate to the material, the task, the tech itself, each other, and themselves within that context.
#Satchat

A1: Sound pedagogical practices and classroom routines around collaboration/communication! Classroom culture and relationships with students need to be in place too! #satchat
Absolutely! Without foundation it becomes to difficult or clunky and then Ts become discouraged. Routines allow for the seamless nature of effective tech integration #satchat#WO2World
In reply to
@MrTVaughn, @KristinZiemke, @KatieMuhtaris
A1 There must be good infrastructure (bandwidth, tech support, etc.) and in-house PD workshops for teachers, prior to introduction to students. #satchat
A1: Kids need to be fed, loved, feel safe, and wanted. Teachers need to be aware. So long as we brag more about knowing digi-trends than the myriad needs of families in our district, shiny new toys are going to help more folks out of district than in. #satchat
A1 a strong non-digital learning environment is needed before you introduce digital learning environment. Bad practices can just multiply the more technology is introduced #satchat
A1: Sound pedagogical practices and classroom routines around collaboration/communication! Classroom culture and relationships with students need to be in place too! #satchat
This is so important and was a huge part of our deployment plan - before and when kids got the device. Digital citizenship is something we continue to teach!! #satchat
A1 Ss need to be taught good guidelines and rules for being digital citizens safely before diving into digital learning. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie
A1
Do your research! Australian schools embarked in 2008 on the journey of having High Schools 1:1. Sydney Catholic Schools High Schools are 1:1 and all of our schools Primary & High Schools (152 Schools) WiFi enabled, even on ovals.
#satchat
A1. I think before you push “Go” you need a vision of where you want/ hope to see your kids reach, an idea of how you wish to see digitial learning complement other forms of instruction, and training for staff who can facilitate the process #satchat
Apologies for not being able to join #satchat this morning. Since you are discussing digital learning environments, I wanted to offer these two ‘resources’ for your collective consideration. Best wishes for a great discussion about such a timely topic! #tech
A1 - A lot of the things you find in a not-so digital learning environment...structure, knowledge of the material, a teacher, a student, etc.
#SatChat
What defines a digital work environment? A classroom with wifi? Using quizlet on a cell phone? An LCD projector?
A1. Part 2. A realistic plan/ budget so there is quality tech, Wi-Fi, and support staff. Nothing more frustrating than when even the kids don't trust it "to work" #satchat
I agree but i would rather teach #DigitalFluency - we need to go beyond #Digitalcitizenship-Ss need to know how to find info, use it ethically & fluency in understanding which is the right tool to demonstrate their learning #satchat
So true, and continue to teach it as it's implement. We should wonder when #digcit and "character education" will fold into one another. After all, we are in the second decade of the 21st Century. #satchat
You want to learn more about digital learning environments that work for kids? Register for the 4th Annual Tomorrow’s Classrooms Today Conference taking place on May 18 and 19 #satchathttps://t.co/WpBcUoK6Er
I concur
Particularly after our experiences with Hurricane Maria. Though schools can survive on some level of creativity infrastructure and access to devices remain basic necessities. #satchat
A2) Effective digital learning environments involve Ss collaborating, interacting and creating. They are not working in constant silos and silence (digital worksheets) but are exploring and leading in their learning, #satchat
A1: Teachers need to be supported on a regular basis. An instructional technology coach is invaluable for this. They can be a GUIDE on the RIDE!!
#satchat
Agree, Ryan. Tech integration requires specified plans, connected with a supportive learning environment, so that our Ss will reap the most benefits from the resource #satchat
Agreed- purposeful roll-out can help to build up models & examples of successful shift via early adopters from which the next wave of teachers can learn. #satchat
A1: For digital learning environments to work, a shared vision of what that can and will look like is important. Working with the teachers to get the devices and tools needed to get started and then providing training so they feel comfortable #satchat
Trust. Rapport. Human relationships. Digital learning environments need to be an extension of the safe and supported physical classroom, not a replacement for it. #satchat
A1 Begin with describing what you believe learning should look like regardless of the tech in hand - pencil, brush, drill, cello, or mobile device #satchat
A2. Flexible rooms, seating that allows students to work collaboratively where needed and/or independently if needed. Make most of the room about learning spaces for children. #satchat
A1: It all begins with trust. Digital leaders must give up control and trust students and staff will use real world tools to unleash creative and a passion for learning. #satchat
Agreed! But I don't mean just gaming when I say play. There should be a spirit in our classrooms that encourages playful thinking and creativity - with or without games. #satchat
A2: Effective digital learning environments have Ss working at their own paces to create something that demonstrates their knowledge. DL needs to enhance, not replace instruction. #satchat
A2: Effective digital learning environments are flexible & adaptable with a variety of resources that meet diverse S needs. Also these days digital learning environments need to be mobile ready so learning can happen anytime, anywhere #satchat
A1.2 I had the good fortune of being a tech specialist in an MS for years. I supported Ts use of tech in their classrooms. Best job ever and a great way to support digital learning. Sometimes it takes more than two hands! #satchat
A2 the environment is student centered and high energy - learning should exponentially increase in this env.env from teacher side include passion for digital learning and an ability to admit the kids may know more than you do when it comes to harnessing the technology #Satchat
A2: The most effective digital learning environments are when students are performing a task that would otherwise not be possible without technology.
#satchat
A2: effective digital learning environments happen when staff see the tech as more than a place for Ss to take notes, do internet research, etc. It should transform the way in which we teach. #satchat
Yes! Learn with students! Mine recently started creating VRs using CoSpaces, and my students are flying as they explore coding strategies. I'm deeply appreciative of my admin's support when teachers ask to pilot new tech opportunities. #proud2bmillstone#satchat
A1: For digital learning, you need bandwidth, devices, admin/district support, and SAMR. #satchat But MOST of all-Roll with it and learn w/ Ss without fear of failure.
A2 - If a learning environment is effective, the students are thinking...cognition...they are learning.
So I guess an effective digital learning environment looks the same as a non-digital learning environment...then add wifi.
#satchat
A1: I think #TRUST has to be in place. Teachers who let kids lead the digital learning are the innovators. Kids can help troubleshoot, teach about new apps, and create incredible documentation of their learning if they are allowed. #TRUSTUS#DONTSCAREUS#satchat#LivBits
A2 Student led learning. Ts as facilitators. Ss focusing on topics that help with problem solving, collaboration and growth mindset. The key is balance #satchat
#truth digital learning ends up becoming independent too often. While the ability to be self-motivated is necessary, the necessity to create authentic digital learning communities with peer-to-peer interaction is critical. #satchat#edtech
A2: effective digital learning environments have Ss as consumers and creators with meaningful, memorable and measurable learning. Right, @Stefanowicz135 ? #Satchat
We have Instructional Technology Facilitators in our district now that are 1:1 that specifically aid in tech integration. Every district should look into these #satchat
A1: the first thing is train the teachers! So that they can manage and teach with the tech- so many tones they are flying while building the plane and then digital doesn’t do anything except replace paper tasks:( #satchat
Agreed! But I don't mean just gaming when I say play. There should be a spirit in our classrooms that encourages playful thinking and creativity - with or without games. #satchat
A.2: Effective digital learning environments embed tech when needed and appropriate. Not all lessons require digital tools. They need to be used strategically to enhance learning. #samr#Satchat
A1: Pedagogy should drive the technology. I’m a Computer Science teacher. I love technology. Sometimes non-tech approaches are the way to go. Evaluate the degree to which technology enhances the learning. #satchat
A2: What they look like is going to depend on the tech used. Could be laptops, Ss on phones or tablets… Certainly more effective if a classroom is 1:1 Important that the tech give Ss a way of going beyond what they could do without, not just do it in a different way. #satchat
A1- digital learning also has to be careful of where it extends to. What accommodations are there for Ss without computers or wifi at home? Heck I've gone for months without wifi at home #satchat
This year, we've committed time with one another to share how we use (and may use) the SAMR Model like we have Bloom's to enhance learning. We call it the "SAMR Sandbox". #satchat
A2: Ah, this is a critical question--how teachers are evaluated has influence on how they behave. Traditional observation rubrics may need revamping. #satchat
A2 Effective digital environments need to be flexible. Offer a variety to students. Allow for student voice and choice in tools and demonstration of learning. Focus on adaptability. Do not force anything on students. Learning must be an adventure. #satchat
Good morning #KansasCity.
Up at 4:30, two hours of writing/novel revisions. Now goes a number of hours staring into the deep billowing sea of wintery exhalations and milky, bitter chai.
What are U up to?
#satchat#SaturdayMorning#SaturdayMotivation
A1: Of course a shared vision, but also a comprehensive professional development plan that supports Ts in the rollout and continues to support their growth wrt digital learning. #Satchat
#satchat 1) a digital learning environment is a learning environment with unique tools. The same rules exist for all: safety matters most. Safe to fall, safe to take risks, safe to be vulnerable.
A2: An effective digital learning environment has OPTIONS...it's flexible, accessible, differentiated and collaborative- with #udl as the framework for lesson design- right @adamcsteiner? #satchat
Agree! Just shared w/a colleague my frustration that some teachers equate a serious classroom w/academic rigor. I have learned a lot of things through play. #satchat
A2: Effective environments can be just as unique as our non-tech classrooms. Different tech applications require different environments. Group work, individual practice, sometimes loud and exciting, sometimes quiet and thoughtful #satchat
A2-Digital learning environments are student driven and allow exploration, flexibility, and include a variety of technology with endless possibilities. #satchat
A2 - The first thing that should be noticed in a digital learning environment has nothing to do with digital. It's the students being actively engaged in learning. You can have all the digital tools in the world but if the students aren't engaged it doesn't matter. #satchat
A2: There is no simplified answer for this one. Students will find engagement with any technology, but that doesn't mean mastery or comprehension of material is taking place. This is where assessment, questioning, and careful planning comes in to place #satchat
Technology should create an extension of the already existing resources of the classroom. Should be used in a way that allows students to explore the world beyond their current environment. #satchat
A2: Student centered! S's should be able to help each other when issues arise, know where/who to go to when they need help, know when to go to the teacher, know when walk away from a conversation, etc. #satchat
#satchat I like to think of it as a light BUZZING sound, where Ss are collaborating on their work, they are engaged, Ss are getting up and helping each other when they are stuck with something.
A2: the environment needs to be open air with a variety of settings, both rigid and relaxed, for students to learn to use with different projects. Perhaps even an isolated focus chamber for limited moments. #satchat
A2: no different than a great lesson without tech, students collaborating, troubleshooting problems, talking, discussing and talking and discussing 🤗#satchat
A2 ~ Effective digital environments have a plan for charging “dead” devices & monitoring student work while on the device (GoGuardian). Most importantly, Ss are engaged with their peers on a collaborative assignment (ideally of their choice 🙂)! #satchat
Exactly! We ran several parent prep evenings before rolling out, initially to Grade 9. Really important that the whole #leadership team attend these so parents know it has 1000% support of the school’s leadership & they can contact any of them with concerns #satchat
A1.1 So long as the tools we use to enhance education are quietly used to track, to store, to feed data systems beyond the server in the class custodian's closet, I'm leery any evaluation of digital learning. #satchat
A2- effective digital environments look like collaborative work spaces. The Ss are working in small group or individually on PBL activities. That have a greater purpose and outcomes. #satchat
A2 less use as screensheets, more use for creative, thinking feats = accessible tools, used differently, collaborative and individual spaces for learning, choice and opportunity to align learning with interests, screens on and off as needed, equity in all ways #satchat
A2 Effective Digital Learning environments are centered more on purpose, conversation & humanity with accessible tools that support thinking/creativity without bounds. Human before tech and equitable #satchat
A2: Engagement, collaboration (in person & digital), smiles, confidence, puzzled drive & determination. Wonder. Connection. Joy. "Looks like" might be less important than "feels like." #satchat#ksdpd
We have Instructional Technology Facilitators in our district now that are 1:1 that specifically aid in tech integration. Every district should look into these #satchat
A2- when considering what is effective it's important to remember that making something easier is not the same as making something more efficient. Keep the right goals in mind #satchat
Ts should constantly be searching for novel ways to use this resource as our Ss can easily go into “auto-pilot” as they are already living in a digital world. #satchat
A2 When it will enhance or provide another level to learning, empowerment, engagement and expression and when not to use it-especially if it gets in the way. #satchat
Digital learning environments vary ... in my social studies class i try to make it an exploration through history ... what works in my class may not work in a math class ... what works with my kids this year may not work with next years kids #satchat
A1 I also think that classroom/tech management is huge. I know my kids. I especially dont want kid x in the corner with the ipad where I cant see it. Accountability and trust #satchat
A1: There needs to be an understanding from Ts and Admins that the Ss might know more. Facilitate learning. Empower S leaders. Willing to release control when students know more than us. #Satchat
Q2) I think digital learning environments optimize learning. We all have the tools we need accessible to us at all times....teachers, students, & parents. #satchat
A2: DL environments SUPPLEMENT great teaching & learning opportunities - focusing on what strategy & tool is best for the learning goal #satchat#pclearn
Let’s not over complicate this. They look like great “old school” environments. They have elements of student voice, mutual respect, high cognitive engagement #satchat
A2) effective digital environments should allow Ss choice, self-direction, opportunity for collaboration, all with a clear focus and purpose (meaningful learning) #satchat
A2 These environments should look like a place where students are engaged in the learning and each other. Kids should still be collaborating and talking, not just be silent in front of devices. #satchat
A2) Effective digital learning environments don't necessarily look "digital" at all. They look like learners having the resources available to make choices around what they learn - as well as when, where, why, how, and with whom they learn. #satchat
A2: In my kid dream world we'd use all hand held devices! Stop with the clunky computers! I think the environment encourages kids to create and be innovators. It supports dreaming BIG. And it allows us to connect to the world. #satchat
A2: Digital leadership isn’t about flashy tools, but a strategic mindset that leverages available resources to improve what we do, while anticipating the changes needed to cultivate a school focused on engagement and achievement. #satchat
A2: I love the concept and some of what I've seen with digital learning environments but they need to be built around people and their needs. So the digital learning environment must be flexible and adjustable.
#satchat
My new comfort zone is getting out of my comfort zone! My problem-solver club students are whizzes at coding and I'm amazed by their lightning quick learning curve in VR creation. #satchat
A2 Again, Vision, mobility/flexibility, ace infrastructure & support professional learning underpins pedagogy that value Ss voice & choice, value Ts & Ss who seek new tech & share its potential & understanding value if accesdibility for all Ss #satchat
So we get rid of the teachers who say no? Or those that don’t buy in? I just can’t agree with that. Maybe it’s an antiquated point of view, but I’d rather hire teachers who WANT to do the job instead of forcing it on others who don’t want to do it. #satchat
A2 Digital learning environments are student driven, flexible, differentiated, personalized, students are engaged and you do not realize what is digital about it. #Satchat
A2: Students are creators of content not just consumers. Ss work at own pace with teacher assistance if needed! Purpose is created through authentic audiences! Experts are utilized when needed! #Satchat
We have Instructional Technology Facilitators in our district now that are 1:1 that specifically aid in tech integration. Every district should look into these #satchat
This is the key to use #edtech. Need to foster independence and research skills on the part of students. Teach them to collaborate in the online world and learn from each other as we are doing on #satchat
A2 - The first thing that should be noticed in a digital learning environment has nothing to do with digital. It's the students being actively engaged in learning. You can have all the digital tools in the world but if the students aren't engaged it doesn't matter. #satchat
Learning environments should be crafted to match the needs of the learners within. If we start to label them "digital learning environments" we put an emphasis on the tech and not on learning. Digital tools & practices will emerge w/student-determined purposes for use. #satchat
A2: Effective digital learning environments promote creativity, collaboration and curiosity. Flexible seating, areas dedicated to sharing, working quietly, and exploring should be a part of this space #satchat
A1: There needs to be an understanding from Ts and Admins that the Ss might know more. Facilitate learning. Empower S leaders. Willing to release control when students know more than us. #Satchat
A3. The rate of change in the digital learning world is evolving so fast that it is important that educators continue to explore, discover, and adapt their environment with the changes....NO industrial model here. Our S's cannot afford to NOT be digital learners. #satchat
A2 Effective digital learning environments are ones in which technology doesn't drive instruction; teachers use technology to enhance learning. Technology is not a distractor, but rather a way for students to learn and share. #satchat
Agree, Stephanie. These learning environments should provide Ss opportunities to ask and answer focused questions that are linked to their overarching learning goals #satchat
A2 Students working independently with trust and knowing when to ask for guidance or when they see something not age appropriate. In other words using tech responsibly #satchat
A2 Fully agree! I would add that the technology needs to be integrative with the teaching program rather than doing the bells & whistles. We have access to all Google Apps for Ed which makes collaboration between Ss easy & between school possible. Comes back to planning #satchat
A2 digital learning is not the solution to learning but a pathway to learning, key for me is how young people learn to choose the tools they need for the work they want and need to accomplish #satchat
A2 I think the operative words are “learning environment”. That environment invites inquiry, failure, collaboration and thrives on relationships. The digital aspect is the cherry on top of the sundae. #satchat
A2: focused on student learning....beginning with the end in mind...what is the goal & how can we provide the best learning opportunities to achieve the goal & spark learning #satchat
A3 To maintain effective environments you need to have students involved at all levels. You need to allow for flexibility and adaptability. A constant growth mindset and open mind is needed. #satchat
A3: After routines are set- We look for ways to balance Tech & Text. Think of tech as a layer to amplify what you are already doing. It's not about a tech project or typing something. Leverage tech's power as an archiving tool to grow Ss thinking #satchat
A3: By keeping the main thing, the main thing! Student learning!!! So long as engagement and positive student outcomes are at the center of our work it will remain effective. However, I encourage continued high quality PD!! #Satchat
A2 Once responsible use is understood, anything is possible at school or at home. Integrity and responsibility is what we need to model and teach #satchat
A3: We need tech integration specialists or to build up teacher leaders who can be go-tos for others- trouble shoot and keep pushing things forward #satchat
A3: Good maintenance needs to be driven by feedback, whether it be the speed of the internet, or the need for different types of tools, or an #edcamp style PD to share what tools Ts are using! #satchat
A3: Training - Collaboration of teachers to share ideas and keep on the same page - Build students up to be better participants in engaging in the DL system. #satchat
Morning friend! Yes, S's are often our best teachers in the digital world. I love the student tech team idea. My son is going to be on one in his school, I'm so excited for him. He's so proud! @DISLibrarian#satchat
A3 Growth mindset is key. As long as both T and S are willing to keep changing and trying new things, I think it will be easy to maintain a dig learning enviro. #satchat
Well said. Teachers would be wise to use technology to scaffold student strengths and needs. How can tech allow for more choice and further exploration? How can tech activate different understandings? #satchat
A shared vision for learning. Why/how is technology necessary to help our kids learn? If you're thinking of bringing in tech and it doesn't address that shared purpose, don't. #satchat
A3: Have regular check-ins with our teachers and students to make sure that the space is working for them. Start small with what you buy-live in it and let the space develop based on what is done there #satchat
A2 #satchat I know it felt good last week when I was invited to make up a third player in a video game & I saw the cooperation, strategizing, teamplay of the others on my side. #Inclusiveness
A2- There must be a focus. You cannot simply give Ss technology and let them go. Provide them a platform to create, design, share, and collaborate on work and projects #satchat
A3: Most important thing to maintain an effective digital learning environment is to listen. Be responsive to S & T needs & work together to select & establish effective digital tools for learning #satchat
A2 Effective digital learning environments need to have an established purpose and resources. We shouldn't just go through the motions by just having tech resources at our disposal. Needs to be reason #satchat
This is the key to use #edtech. Need to foster independence and research skills on the part of students. Teach them to collaborate in the online world and learn from each other as we are doing on #satchat
A2 Students in the zone, immersed in learning, losing track of time. Students literally leaning in as they work. The air crackles with their excitement & passion. #satchat
A3: constant innovation. Keep up with new #edtech and new applications. Consistent PD and a culture of learning among staff and students will emerge #satchat
The approach we've taken to (adult) learning is that it's everyone's shared responsibility to open the invitation to learn, and keep it open to all. Adults who know this feel less threatened. #satchat

A2: student engagement with each other but also with others outside the school building; student choice and freedom to explore, investigate; teacher facilitators of learning, questions being asked to deepen understanding, promote curiosity, and challenge thinking #Satchat
Maintaining your digital learning environment means connecting with the Ss in your classroom and engaging them in authentic real-world work while incorporating digital tools in that process. #satchat
100 years ago, corporal punishment was considered effective classroom management. Education evolves. Digital learning is important enough that we can't just let it happen here and there if Ts want to. Not getting rid of Ts, supporting them so they can make this change. #satchat
A2. The digital environment should B like any learning environment: propelled by an engaging task/purpose, w/ opportunities 4 collaboration, guided by a passionate educator who cares ab kids. #satchat
A3 We need to stay current with our knowledge of all the various digital tools and how they can best be used. Ongoing PD is essential for teachers and leaders. #satchat
A3: Providing staff with on-the-job PD with a digital learning coach and giving them time to observe one another or visit other schools. Admins need to be in classrooms to help identify needs and design PD accordingly. #Satchat
A2: Orange County in Orlando has rolled out 1:1 started with all Highschools 2 years ago, integrating #UDL extensions in tool bars, training T’s up, supporting with tech integration coaches, parent academies, it takes a billiard and continuous learning! #satchat
A3: By assuring that technology is serving a purpose. If we are not intentional in how we use technology, it will simply become another gimmick that adds nothing to the educational experience.
#satchat
Morning friend! Yes, S's are often our best teachers in the digital world. I love the student tech team idea. My son is going to be on one in his school, I'm so excited for him. He's so proud! @DISLibrarian#satchat
I agree, but with some kids ... i need to be there to help them a bit/much more than others. Help them understand what they are reading. Not every kid is on the same level. #satchat
A3 We’ll have effective digital learning environments when we create an industry that isn’t driven by greedy adults centered on themselves, from tech industry and tech professional learning #satchat
A.3: Providing relevant, engaging digital learning environments where digital tech in integrated & used throughout the day in a variety of subject areas to enrich the learning experiences of Ss and providing ways to documentation their learning journey. #Satchat
I used to do that fixing, and I think that teaching students respect for the tool goes a long way in maintaining that. Our frequent fliers were those that didn't know to care about the tech they had. #satchat
A3: Effective learning environments can become static and stale if they don't grow and change with changing technology. Effective PD is key - so is knowing your kids and letting them have voice in their learning experiences. #satchat
#TRUTH! I think it is sooner than people imagine! We already have access to some hands free devices! just got a @GoPro! Totally hands free when I have to strapped to me! Coolest video and pictures I've ever taken! #satchat
A3 Targeted use (purpose must be clear) of digital devices and tools help maintain a healthy learning environment. These moments must be balanced with face-to-face interactions and discussions. #satchat
A3: We must recognize that learning is never done, continue to revisit what’s working, assess for alignment to vision, and redirect if needed. We must recognize DL as a cycle for district improvement. #satchat
A3: You have to develop that culture of trust and expectations that students will remain on task and complete assigned work. However, monitor systems like Apple Classroom are a nice tool to have. #satchat
A3. In order to maintain effective digital learning environments Ts need to be co-learners with their Ss. They also need to be responsive to student need and be accessible if support is needed. #satchat

☕Good Morning Patriots☕
"To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne."
~ Revelations 3:21
We need to assure we are providing students the skills they need for for success in THEIR FUTURE! Not providing them skills to be successful in the past. Some of that is digital and some of that is traditional. Find the balance in a digital learning environment.
#satchat
#satchat Continually review technology and classroom norms. Take time to reflect as a class&independently on previous assignment (what went well? Why? What didn’t go well? Why? What hurdles did we have the jump? How did we solve them?) then discuss it as a class.
Surely the days of technology as something separate, that we think of independently of our core learning environment and accountability are over? https://t.co/IWrDATjSfx#satchat#edtech
A3: openness to change and a continuous critical evaluation of the effectiveness of the digital learning tool. What aspects of the tech are proving to be effective? What isn’t working so well? How can the learning environment be improved? #satchat
A3: Let's also look at: If your lesson is engaging, carefully thought out, and the objective is measurable at the end... student's won't have time to be off task. #satchat
A3: Keep updating SOP's as problems arise, but make them learning opportunities. Include S's in creating those procedures. Give them ownership of their env't and they will have the desire to keep it that way. #satchat
A3: Most important thing to maintain an effective digital learning environment is to listen. Be responsive to S & T needs & work together to select & establish effective digital tools for learning #satchat
A3) Leadership to maintain effectiveness of digital learning environments --> steadfast focus on the WHY by aligning every resource - $$$, time, energy - toward actualizing that vision. #satchat
A3 We maintain the effectiveness by consistently ensuring that the resources are used to support S learning. We are charged to create strategic incorporation plans for S use, so that that they can engage in deeper thinking, produce knowledge and navigate new skills #satchat
I️ strongly believe that in the case technology is just a substitute for traditional resources it is still a massive WIN. Kids deserve to use the tools of their generation in school. #satchat
@davisnextgen said early on; the cell phone became the new version of the note that got passed around. When engagement is high kids don't think about the "other" stuff. #satchat
A3 Maintenance is a matter of creating solid 3 yr plans based onshared vision-if you have that, then you have budgeted the $ to support infrastructure, PD, device turnover ecperimenting with nee tech-Also needed is to cheer & share the fine work your Ts & Ss do #satchat
Justin Trudeau is a complete idiot.

A1. For the digital environment to be maximized the leaders in the building (teachers, admin., coaches, etc.) must continue to grow and explore into the technology world themselves. #satchat
The US Empire (ex nation) will spend a projected $43 billion on Afghanistan this year...EVERY PENNY BORROWED from our uncertain future. Tell your children...how we are destroying their future with WAR #satchat
A3. Responsive leadership that sustains the $$, the staffing and PD, and the vision, all while have the mindfulness to get out of people’s way to let them extend the boundaries of learning and growth. , #satchat
A3 keeping devices up and running is key ... many computer makers have done better at making things more durable. understanding software updates and how they can affect user experience. #satchat
A3 IMO Admins need to provide time for teachers to play to see what works best for their classroom, teachers should focus & become an expert on a few apps & how they will help student growth in their classroom rather than a surface knowledge of many. #satchat
I strongly believe that in the case technology is just a substitute for traditional resources it is still a massive WIN. Kids deserve to use the tools of their generation in school. #satchat
A3: To me the digital learning environment is the online space. How is it set-up, what are pre-requisites to later work, is there a rotation, choice, leveled. Are there good resources, or is it something students create? Just to start. #satchat
A3 - Keep the main thing the main thing...learning. Unless the objective is to learn how to use technology, the technology should not be the central focus.
#SatChat
A.3: When admin and teachers model, support and engage in using digital tools in their daily practice and commit to ongoing learning. #Satchat#professionallearning
A3 professional development can’t be an event but rather a flow of professional learning focused on deep learning to transfer into practice - modeling, coaching, practice #satchat
A3 collaboration throughout, and most important is a chance to share results...always try to stress how much we learn from each other in my classroom. #satchat
A3: openness to change and a continuous critical evaluation of the effectiveness of the digital learning tool. What aspects of the tech are proving to be effective? What isn’t working so well? How can the learning environment be improved? #satchat
For any district moving to digital learning environments, I can't emphasize the need for #edtech coaches like @jennadhan and @nash_michaeld who support T's and S's #satchat
A3) Effective digital learning environments are best maintained when focused on the process and helping Ss create and collaborate. It means not ALWAYS using tech for tech sake. Mixing up the interactive experiences so that there are hands-on opportunities & inquiry. #satchat
A3: Staying abreast of and open to current education technology requires commitment to effectively incorporate into one’s classroom. Leadership must make it a priority and provide support in doing so. #Satchat

A2b) That $$$ might go toward learning resources - make sure they reinforce the vision. That time might go toward PD, planning, reflection, development - make sure it brings people toward the goals. #satchat
A3: Effective PD, job embedded, coaching, also visit other classrooms to gain more ideas; our very own educators are sometimes our greatest unused resource #satchat
A4 Learning is all about the students. We need to involve them in their learning and decision-making. They have a strong voice, we need to listen as adults. Allow them to become leaders. #satchat
Exactly right! I have shared this before. Whilst Head of Curriculum of High School (Grades 7-12) of 1200 Ss, I had the task in 2008-2010 to implementing ELearning. This was my process. #satchat
A3 Be skeptical of the software vendors who promise results from a personalized learning platform; instead invest time in teachers—provide opportunities for them to share what enagaging DL practices work in their classrooms #satchat
A3) I think we learn from each other. Visit classrooms, set aside time to collaborate, develop a system to catalog what you learn so you can apply it. #satchat
Agree, Tony. Supporting effective digital learning environments requires leadership who will establish the focus to support S learning and who will dedicate the active support necessary to sustain stated goals #satchat
A2 - I believe a solid curriculum is vital to the foundation of any learning environment. Great methods can be effective, but only if they are aimed at vital targets. Tech adds to this culture and environment #satchat
A4 Learning is all about the students. We need to involve them in their learning and decision-making. They have a strong voice, we need to listen as adults. Allow them to become leaders. #satchat

A3- Maintaining & growing the digital environment cannot be done in a vacuum. Tech committees of the ed world cannot hold all the keys to the kingdom. Ts, Ss & Ps must be given opportunities for authentic feedback thru surveys also necessary to provide a strong #digcit#satchat
A3: Maintenance looks like this... continual coaching, PD, support, reflection and identifying where you are in the process and problem solving for sustainability. #satchat
A4 Ss can be our best Ts since what's digital to us is just every day stuff to them. If we listen to our Ss, we can learn about their needs and wants when it comes to learning and that can greatly improve engagement. #satchat
Yes, got it, thanks! Any tools and strategies - high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech are good as long as they foster meaningful engagement for learners. Post-it notes and mini white boards are two of my favorites! #satchat
A3 Be skeptical of the software vendors who promise results from a personalized learning platform; instead invest time in teachers—provide opportunities for them to share what enagaging DL practices work in their classrooms #satchat
Students need to be able to learn from failure as well as the professionals. It's just that no one wants to be in the group that fails and misses out. #satchat
Any digital work that is creation of something has to end with a link. That is the key. Student digital footprints are equal to the number, variety, etc. of links they own. #satchat
I was looking at the "get out of the way" ... in theory for many I am behind them ... pushing ... and honestly, even in my tricked out digital learning environment it is me being the sage on the stage. #satchat
A3. Effective digital environments are not dissimilar from other effective learning environments - they are relational, allow for Ss choice & exploration, & honor Ss identity #satchat
It's not that teachers are afraid of change, folks, it's that we're tired of annual tsunamis pushed by folk who scrambled out of the classroom faster than a scalded dog without due consideration. #satchat
Blockbuster, Blackberry, and Taxicabs...all knocked off their pedestal because they refused to adapt to the current needs of society. Change is imminent. #EndofAverage#SatChat#AgeOfIndividual Great share, @schug_dennis
A4. There is a thirst and energy I see when they have the opportunity to engage their learning in this way. Develop the relationships and let them explore and develop their own learning profile that isn't teacher centered. #satchat
A4 They are the users, but we need to be the role models and I think often adults are not good role models because we are still learning and confused about this as well( and thats ok) #satchat
A3) Maintaining an effective digital environment sounds like Drucker's Action-Reflection cycle: "Always follow effective action wiht quiet reflection. From the reflection will come even more effective action." #takepause#satchat
Ss are our greatest resource-a teacher does not need to know every tool to allow Ss a choice in using the right tool for them to demonstrate their learning. We need to be willing to learn from them. A Ss tech team is also a fab idea. #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
A4 The Digital Natives we teach need authentic, relevant classrooms that reflect the world they are living in &living into. Use their ease with the tool &learn fr/them. Paradigm shift in ed is here: #KidsCanTeachUs right, @thelivbits ? #satchat
A4: Digital learning environments needs to serve the Ss. Ss can provide valuable feedback on learning needs & preferences. I also think the day will come when Ss coding will influence a digital learning environment #satchat
A4: I guess this would be more geared toward the older gen. of teachers, but these students know more about the tech often times then we do. The trends, the fads, the newest fixes. We need to tap into that to create lessons build around the world they live in day to day #satchat
A3: For all the grown ups talking about the tech, please remember KIDS should have a say about how the learning environment functions. It's about the people in the environment, not the tech so much. Also, digital environments are REAL spaces! I wish we'd drop the digital.#satchat
Absolutely!!! Couldn't agree more with the need for technology coaches in the schools. They support the teachers and often model how the technology is used effectively in the classroom! #satchat
A4: This week we put a #Tesla in space. That is awesome but think of what went into making that happen. It all started with education and kids being interested in learning something. We need our students to be part of helping us define digital learning & spaces.
#satchat
A3b: From an admin perspective, we need to create an environment where there is trust b/c things aren't always going "work" when Ts are trying something new - and that's okay. #Satchat

The greatest mistake we make-we have to build a website for each class&load it with resources. Helpful but ask the Ss first. In 2015, Teaching Gr12 Studies of Religion, created a Google site for them. All they wanted was access to a shared Google Folder of resources
#satchat
But can we just call them learning spaces? Saying digital implies they are super different. Then people think they don't have to be authentic. Like our President. Sorry. Had to go there. #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
I stayed after school yesterday tweaking a rubric with a student after I created the way I wanted a finished product to look. Is this Backwards Design method enough and the best practice for my Ss? 🤔 #tlap#LeadLAP#langchat#pln#satchat#laedchat
#SatChat | In ANY school of interest to me, I ensure that the Principal understands my commitment as a Parent, I'm however not involved in ANY schs at the moment and prob will never be again.
A4 We can’t let it be all about tech. However we are learning, it needs to be about the students. Draw on their expertise and curiosity. Explore what they are excited about, without without tech #satchat
Students have a wealth of ideas and can help us create a teaching environment that works for them. They're unique year to year and you have to change year to year to get the best engagement and results. #satchat
A3. We can maintain effective digital learning environments by keeping up with and taking care of all equipment, take advantage of BYOD, and continue to search and expose students and teachers to effective technology use in the classroom. #satchat
No doubt! It's so easy to get pulled in too many directions as a leader, to try and do too much. Bringing every decision back to that key purpose --> maintained focus --> maintained effectiveness. #satchat
A4: Students will have innovation and creativity that we do not. They will see how they can use different apps and resources in new ways. My students give me great ideas all the time. #satchat
A4: Ss are going to share what is relevant technologically and we need to listen to HOW they want to share their learning and WHAT types of products they want to create. I don't think that's new now that more schools are using tech #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
#satchat When we collaborate w/ our own Ss we are empowering them & the entire learning community. #geniushour is a great example of this. They are so powerful b/c Ss initiate their own learning, explore their own interests, & collaborate w/ each other through the design process
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
A1 - In order for anything to work, you must first establish a culture of belonging and strong rapport with the students. If that’s not in place, nothing else matters. #satchat
A4. Students have more tech knowledge and should be consulted. Having them help gives them a sense of ownership and they know their contributions were valued. #satchat
A4: We should meet them on the apps they're on and teach them how to use them productively to learn. Instead we try to create to separate lanes of apps and nothing sticks with students. #edtech#satchat
A4: Ss aren’t afraid they will break the device. They are curious and willing to take risks. Wished we had that same attitude all the time toward the new and unknown #satchat
A2- There must be a focus. You cannot simply give Ss technology and let them go. Provide them a platform to create, design, share, and collaborate on work and projects #satchat
A4 - We do what we do for 1 reason: the students. The students should be the center of all learning environments, especially the digital learning environment. We must use this space to foster collaboration and creativity #satchat
Agree! I have been in PD where teachers briefly present apps they use, it is typically at the end before you leave. It would be more beneficial if they did it in the beginning and then allow us to choose one & go into further training/playing w/teacher who presented #satchat
It’s interesting you say that because in the K-12 world, with the types of online content providers and tools kids are using, how many of their creation links DO they actually own? How is their work archived and able to be taken with them? #satchat
A4 Our students can teach us a lot about how kids use technology. They need guidance, however, on how to maintain their values in the digital world. Beyond acceptable us policies, we need them to help each other when caring adults are absent in their digital spheres. #satchat
It’s essential to embed digit citizenship & skills and take the time to talk about why they matter. It brought a huge smile to my face recently when my class talked about @creativecommons and image file formats at part of a project on the Mexican Revolution. #satchat
Connect with other teachers and share your excitement for new opportunities. Our computer teacher and I are piloting VR coding with CoSpaces and our students are thrilled to use it in two classes! #satchat
A.3: Providing relevant, engaging digital learning environments where digital tech in integrated & used throughout the day in a variety of subject areas to enrich the learning experiences of Ss and providing ways to documentation their learning journey. #Satchat
I mean granted students will play games from time to time, look up funny memes, etc. However, I am not going to encourage them to be off-task from time to time if there is a goal or lesson at hand. #satchat

A4) technology is only a tool to enhance the learning environment. Ss would know what tools are most effective for them better than the adults #satchat
and it's amazing how you can change a learning env't when you let the S's help create a positive impact. Respect the kids now matter the age and they'll do the same. #satchat
In 2013, Democrat Reps. Keith Ellison, Andre Carson, and Gregory Meeks attended a private dinner with Iran's president, along with Louis Farrakhan, a notorious anti-Semite who leads the Nation of Islam. Only took 5 years for this to come out.

So how often in an office environment do you have someone check their email or take care of a personal task? Let them do it - not dwell on it - and get back to task. Don't allow constant off-task behavior though. #satchat
A3: Effective digital learning environments must also be reinforced at home. Children have access everywhere now. The impacts of ooor choices seap into our classrooms and hallways. Parents need skills to enforce good digital habits. #satchat
The internet is boundless. It is impossible to know everything. It takes humility to submit to student voice and expertise - AND that is exactly what great teachers and schools do. #satchat
Loved talking with this female auto tech student about her work and why more girls should get into the program “Tech on the Floor: Auto Tech Services at CATEC” https://t.co/ak4ahVn7KR#satchat
Ideally the shared goals between district, school, leaders, teachers, students, community. If it's truly a shared vision, it's been built on foundation that invites all learners' voices to the "table." #satchat
A3 So shared Google Folder existed already. I did an Audio Recording MP3 of each lesson and what put that with my Slides / Notes, etc into the Folder. Ss could add to the Folder. It became self generating. If Ss missed a lesson, they went back to the notes & audio file. #satchat
#satchat And we Ts have to consider whether self-pacing or self-direction is appropriate, desirable. When #self-Directed is a foundational principle, #trust also involved.
A4: Alas, "tap[ping] into our greatest resource, the students" has ominous undertones as our corporate "partners" tap into the data we generate. I simply do not trust Pearson et al. #satchat#satchat
A4: Students are often more technologically savvy than we are; therefore, it behooves is to incorporate them in our adoption of technology. Additionally, we are preparing them for 21st century skills/workforce by working with them in this regard. #SatChat
It will be interesting to see in 5 or 10 years to reflect on these conversations, once 'the collective we' take tech and social media for what it is to see how things have changed. Usage. Attitudes. #satchat
A4: The most powerful learning comes when a person is intrinsically driven to learn or solve a problem. Technology or no technology. Let Ss drive the mission. #satchat
A4. It’s important that student voice drives the direction of the learning. Material needs to be relevant and meaningful to help support student engagement. #satchat
Judge me all you want...just when you ask me what my plan is for the day, and I tell you, "Day drinking," don't tell me I don't have a plan. #SaturdayMorning#SatChat
A4 Our students can teach us a lot about how kids use technology. They need guidance, however, on how to maintain their values in the digital world. Beyond acceptable use policies, we need them to help each other when caring adults are absent in their digital spheres. #satchat
A4- simple... BC it’s all about the students!!!! They make it all happen and show us what they need through their work, actions and mistakes. Without them what would we do? #satchat
A4 Learning is designed to be a reciprocal process. Any teacher worth their salt recognizes they have as much to gain from students as they do from them. Every day our S’s are teachihg us things if we will stop long enough to Listen #satchat
A4 Our kids, they are the future. They will determine the strength of our nation, world, and humanity. They must learn now how to be wise, kind, and curious - that process began long before technology. It’s just that now, Technology is part of almost everything #Satchat
Adults and kids are different though. Checking email is still work, doing personal tasks, for me, hardly ever, and for staff during planning period, lunch, after school. I just wonder if Ss have this self-regulation quite down yet. #satchat
A4: There are fewer limitations in a student's mind because they aren't thinking about how many different ways it can go wrong. There have been plenty of times when I thought something wouldn't work...and my six-year-old proved me wrong- #satchat
A-4 We’re building environments where S’s are learning how to learn. Creating this dynamic can foster interests in almost any area of study. The creation of a desire to learn is vital to continued interest in ed #satchat
A4: Ss have access and knowledge of what is engaging to them. If we meet them where they are we are more able to take them where we want to be. Open forums or online suggestion tools might help us know where they are. #satchat
A4 Students must have agency in how they process and learn! Young people are the heartbeat! They know what is relevant and meaningful in today’s world! We must work together or we all lose! What moves them is what is going to move us all forward! #satchat
A4. By tapping in2 students, we do 2 key things: we're gathering ideas from digital artists who create & navigate more consistently in the digital canvas AND we engage them more in the process of learning when we ask them about learning process. #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
A4 Ss know what they need to be able to learn. They can tell you what digital tools will help them best. We need to remember it's about the students, not about what digital tech we Ts are comfortable with. Our lack of knowledge/ comfort level might limit Ss learning. #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
And it's a truly hard thing to do ESPECIALLY if you're the only teacher who has done this. They don't know how to react and the transition can take a long time. #satchat
A5: My students have shared their learning through @flipgrid They've created resources and practiced using @quizizz and they have had voice and choice with @DeckToys and also my own custom-made choice boards with all sorts of options!! #satchat
A5 Absolutely Google Docs. In the 25 years I’ve been in education, there haven’t been too many tools that I would say have changed the way we teach. Google Docs is top of the list! #satchat
Is digital natives still a thing we are referencing? We have to be really careful with that term. Google: “digital natives myth” and enjoy some weekend reading. #satchat
A3 - Maintaining an effective digital learning environment requires for a balance of integration of technology. You also need to maintain your focus and expectations with the Ss to hold them to a standard #satchat
A4 - Because the reason we educate is the student...I think this answer should be answered the same whether the word 'digital' is included in it or not.
#SatChat
A4 See my response to A3. I would add, it’s not our learning environment, it is predominantly the Ss learning env. My Gr12 class wanted a shared Google Folder not another class website. You need the Ss to buy into it! Don’t assume they will because it’s technology.

Good point. I know what they can get to their drive can eventually be taken. I also know many tools can be uploaded directly to Youtube, which can also be taken. #satchat
A5: @Seesaw is one of the best I've seen for elementary ed because it gives Ss the ability to show what they know in many different ways and gives the T the ability to provide feedback, share S work and connect with parents #SatChat
Can we teach them how to utilize those platforms in an educational way? If so, why not? If we constantly create two segregated realms of apps, then Ss will only use Snap and Insta in superficial ways. #satchat
Why treat them drastically differently? Allow a regular break of a minute or two to share a thought with a friend or something like that unless the situation really requires a whole period of focused attention. #satchat

A5) So many digital tools. I began to curate many of them that I have tried, use, etc. I don't use all of these, but I like to know where they are when I want them. Keeps me from forgetting about learning opportunities in this digital environment. #satchathttps://t.co/RnqDnNw4cZ
Yeah, I have used those too, I like edpuzzle as well. I am finding it hard to find new ones I really like. Sort of just got the ones I know and they work, so go with it. #satchat
A1: we start with ensuring we know the reason we are using technology as a tool before choosing it - that way we can be sure we are engaging students #satchat
Making digital learning successful for kids would first involve creating a computing firewall so they can learn, apply, and create without distractions. #satchat
A3: Effective digital learning environments must also be reinforced at home. Children have access everywhere now. The impacts of ooor choices seap into our classrooms and hallways. Parents need skills to enforce good digital habits. #satchat
Q4: Learning is about the kids. Ts already know their content, so when shifting to digital learning they must be adaptive to S needs to support their learning, but also recognize that digital natives does not mean effective use. #satchat
A5 The best digital tool for a pedagogically sound environment for me has been @Flipgrid There is great flexibility, it can be used beyond the four walls, encourages collaboration and focuses on student voice. A must. #satchat
Sometimes you have to be a nuisance. Show up to your favorite edutwitter chat and start challenging buzzwords and the vague chatter that emerges. Share unique and diverse perspectives. #satchat
There is a way to use social that focuses on education. This is not obvious to all students (or teachers). Maybe using it for PD is a way to develop that skill set--and then teach it. #satchat
not everything can be 100% exploration and student discovered ... there are some things I need to help the students understand ... help them connect the dots ... the complexities of US History is not just about finding information. #satchat
A5 Not sure I get the question but if I want my Grade 3 to put their research and ideas to share with others we might use the app BookCreator to publish to whomever we wanted to #satchat
A4 When we tap into our Ss, we identify their learning needs and interests. This allows us to coordinate the strategic fusion of digital learning tools that will support our Ss as they continue their growth in our classrooms #satchat
QUESTION 4
Q4 Why is it important that we tap into our greatest resource, the students, to enhance our digital learning environments? Please elaborate. #satchat
Know someone who needs help with Google Apps for Education?
Get them (or yourself) Hacking Google for Educators - available @amazonhttps://t.co/Jgz0TyFEWD#satchat
A5: The best tools out there are those that promote #StudentVoice and give our Ss a platform that they can use to meet THEIR needs. When Ss take what they learn in school and use it on their own, we have #Empowered learners #satchat
A5 - The GoogleEDU platform is a great place to establish a foundation for an effective digital learning environment. They have built in tools that promote collaboration. Microsoft 365 also has these tools, with there “Teams” program #satchat
As I watch so many students "in" their phones each time they have a free moment, do I try and "meet" them in there with ed content or draw them out? Probably both? #satchat
A5: Using frameworks like: 4 C's, TPACK, SAMR, EEE when deciding what tools to use when you teach can make your teaching more engaging. There are tons of great blogs by @cultofpedagogy@ShakeUpLearning@jmattmiller and more to help! #satchat
We are just digging into @Flipgrid ya amazing for kids and for staff development. Also just began a county wide book study using @voxer#Satchat we have also used @Twitter w staff and kids - kids lead their own ed chats!!!
A5: I think it’s important to recognize that selecting a specific tool because someone else uses it does not guarantee effective use. Ts must recognize the culture in their classroom and shop for tools that engage it. #satchat
A5 - There are a lot of digital tools that can help in assessing learning or in providing material..but, I mean, wifi, LCD projector, google slides, google classroom, etc. all help. #SatChat
A4) The learning environment is ultimately for the students' learning. We as educators need to take a designer's mindset - listening to their explicit and implicit needs throughout the process to ensure it helps and does not hinder. Otherwise it's for us and not them. #satchat
When I am showing kids new technology ... i am a sage on the stage ... they are following along so they know how things work ... then they are set free. #satchat
A5 - I don't think there's an end all or be all here. I think there needs to be a core LMS or core system of some sort for all to build on. I think all resources should be vetted and shared for further evaluation and feedback. #satchat
A5 - I think having a solid LMS is vital to providing a safe environment in which to house your tech interactions. I’ve seen platforms like Schoology transform the way my students in 5th grade interact with each other and with me #satchat
A5: @Flipgrid and @padlet are two of my faves. Great tools for students to share their learning and also gives Ss opportunities to connect and collaborate globally...#satchat
Q3: Maintaining a tech tool box to provide choice in how the S shows mastery, providing ongoing T training & support, to see input from Ts & Ss when looking into new tech, educating families. #satchat#DLDay
Well because a 2nd grader that you don't monitor may spend 5 hours on irrelevant sites and not understand safe searches like a college student. #satchat But agree not to dwell on it.
In reply to
@tech_adell, @CareyUSHistory, @PresidentPat
A5 I use @Flipgrid for oral practice, @MicrosoftTeams for collaborative environment with OneNote and love Learning Tools, @Newsela for differentiated reading levels with current events, @quizlet for vocabulary practice. #satchat
A5b - Digital Learning opens so many doors it's hard to guarantee anything will work or be pedagogically sound, so I think communicating will help to get feedback and evaluation there. #satchat
A5 In this regard, I think developing positive relationships and fostering integrity are more important than digital tools to support pedagogy in technological learning environments. #satchat
A5 Google tools, as others have mentioned. My problem solvers are aces at using Google forms to survey our local community, educators across the state, teachers, and students. Learn to create targeted questions, analyze data. 21st c. skill-building. #satchat
I was at SLA weeks ago for Educon. Seriously, the most effective “Digital learning environments” probably shouldn’t lead with the word “digital”. It’s all about creating the most equitable, safe & honest learning spaces. When you know better, you can’t unknow. #satchat
A5
As a system of schools we invested into Google Apps for Ed for every S & T to have access to. There is such a wide variety in this suite, you’re pretty much covered. Obviously the usual suspects such as You Tube, Google Search, etc.
#satchat
A1: I agree with @markbarnes19. Then, we need to get breakdown each element so students truly understand the magnitude of digital citizenship and why it's important. #satchat
The question may be, can we afford to rush ahead without teacher buy-in? We need a plan, not just technology, and support in terms of how to teach in digital landscape + daily techn support for Ts & Ss. #satchat
A3. Maintain dig learning env by 1. Proving digital space for communication T to S & S to S. 2. Provide support for when T or S is lost, confused or technical problems #satchat
Because pencils are seen by 5 ppl and digital is seen by 5 million ppl. Using technology without a learning plan is a major waste of resources. #satchat

🌟What isn’t scary, but has a scary name and performs best in both freezing and hot temperatures?
Hint: The Answer is the 🎁 #satchat
Yes. The most common feature between kids who end up in trouble on line is where in their home they are. Nothing else - keep computers etc out of Ss bedrooms! That is the number ☝️tool I have learned in a parent information session. We have a Ps evening in April. #satchat
SO important! Last year I held my Empowering Families 101 Workshop where we invite parents and the community in to discuss different topics that can move our children forward in partnership. Our digital safety was our biggest topic yet! Parents want to know more!
A1: PD on ways to use Chromebooks in the classroom. We went 1:1 this year & our only PD was on Google Suite. Ts using tech successfully learned outside (ex:grad class) There’s not enough consistency for Ss to see as a learning tool. #satchat
A5:These are a few of #WO2World favorite things: GClassroom as a portal to push out resources, @flipgrid f/ reflection & connections @Seesaw develops a portfolio &builds a strong connection w/ families, @padlet to replace the sticky note or to collaborate w/others #satchat
Yeah, but we don't have a magic content pill yet, so they have to get it somehow. Videos and reading allows a different perspective than just the teachers. #satchat
I’m honestly sad & mortified that this tweet is being favorited. Until we stop thinking in the traditional sense of how learning works, we can’t fathom that it can and does happen without our leading it. #satchat
The Dems have gone full police-state. History will be horrified at what they’ve done in their battle against civil liberties. The lib media is no better. They know damn well that our justice system was hijacked so the Dems could spy on Trump & they simply smile & nod. #Memo2
I use it to do in class flipped learning at the end of one class and then have student come back the next day to process and explore the content! #satchat

A6: Best resource for pushing mindsets is the people around you! What are they doing that works? Why are they doing it? What have they learned? Tap into your PLN in person or digitally. #satchat
A5 G-Suite for education is great for promoting student collaboration. It allows for student creativity as well! There is so much there for kids to use that support learning and not replace good pedagogy. #satchat
Our district has a Tech Fest every fall to learn about new digital tools. Teachers get time to explore and collaborate and choose the tools that might be right for their students. #satchat#P3TechFest
A5: I think it’s important to recognize that selecting a specific tool because someone else uses it does not guarantee effective use. Ts must recognize the culture in their classroom and shop for tools that engage it. #satchat
At first blink, leaders can take a designer's approach to leadership by inviting perspectives of all (both f2f and digitally), using those perspectives to articulate a vision, and cycling that vision back to the collective for continual refinement. #designthinking#satchat
A5: The Google Suit is a game changer any classroom...I get all of the other stuff, but this is a free resource that has endless opportunities for both teachers and students. #satchat
A5: I really like the simulations like @icivics and tools that have a lot of flexibility like @explainevrythng or Google Suite. Then you're not trying to fit lessons into tech. Find the right tech. #satchat
A5 tools that enable creation, analytical thinking, curation, communication, making, designing, access - less passive, more active learning flipgrid, seesaw, movie making apps, writing apps, recording apps, Enterprise tools for kids, accessibility tools #satchat
A5: Tools that Universal Design the Learning #udl and reduce the barriers do all Ss can show what they know... TRULY accessible, 508 compliant, a few of my favs #gsuiteedu#satchat@Flipgrid@texthelp R&W 4Google, Equatio, @DonJohnstonInc Co-writer ...
Now it is becoming more clear why former CIA Dir John Brennan & ODNI James Clapper so aggressively defended the FBI’s reputation. Like I said in previous tweet. They were probably engaging in the same illegal behavior. I was correct. Read for yourself. https://t.co/ZmwRuQkbdE
You’re assuming that I’m talking about reading or video. Learning is about experience, exposure & need. There are so many other ways of accomplishing this #satchat
A6: Don't overlook the tools that are already widely available. Give students the opportunity to create with digital tools and you might just be surprised with where the learning will go #satchat
A5 #satchat What is pedagogically sound? Each of is must define it for her/his/per community. It is a loaded term, but we all need to grasp an Ed Philosophy as we implement change.
A6 Definitely a PLN! It's a must for every educator. There are some great new books out there about mindset and change and also some wonderful blogs. Share what you find with your Ts! #satchat
A6: I think you are ALL in the right place @Twitter is a great resource to see what other Ts and Ss are using in terms of tech tools Also, there are Ts in your school or district now that you can reach out to for ideas! #satchat
Digital tools that enhance collaboration and communication between Ss with with each other and Ss with Ts. Google classroom is our go to and GAFE is our playground. Still loving #wordclouds. #satchat
A2: All individuals should be multi-device literate (both Ts and Ss). If you're insistent about only using one kind of device or just plain against using tech to empower Ss, then you need to rethink your career #satchat
A6 Awesome resource to encourage stident leadership with tech is Pure Genius from @burgessdave publishing. A new book about flexible seating is coming from @TopDogTeaching So exciting!#satchat
A5: For professional learning I highly recommend going through the training and becoming google educator certified. Just practicing for the tests pushed me to try new things in my classroom. #satchat
I’m Old School...
Piles of research (link) say that the most impactful PD is paired w curriculum. It’s tangible + job-embedded.
So PD planning hierarcy is:
1. Do we need help around the pedagogy?
THEN
2. Can #edtech be added as accelerant?
#satchathttps://t.co/a9khntUhU3
A5: It’s important to keep this in mind as you go digital:
WE must teach OUR students to use technology to CREATE CONTENT.
Google Docs worksheets on Chromebooks are still WORKSHEETS!
#satchat
And connecting kids to people, places, conversation, debate, discourse, artifacts...etc. We can serve a different purpose than how teaching has always worked...especially in history #satchat
A6: Conferences like #FETC or #edcamp so T's can start to see the big picture, and Twitter, of course! Twitter for T's is my favorite session to present so T's know they don't have to follow the Kardashians to use Twitter. Find your teacher tribe and it's not so scary! #satchat

A6: Google it. Everyone is sharing, find what other Ts are doing with tech and try it. Get on a twitter chat to ask questions and get more information. Learning about tech means embracing how it works too. #satchat
As transformative as technology is; it’s a tool—similar to a paint brush. With the right skill set you can either create a masterpiece or a mess. Teachers must guide students in developing skill sets in how to use technology effectively #satchat
A5) Every digital tool can ultimately support a pedagogically sound learning environment, so long as you decide first based on the WHY before jumping to the bright & shiny WHAT. #satchat
Q6: Look at what you are getting this morning! A wealth of knowledge from fellow educators, admin, and tech gurus in the trenches alongside you. Utilize your PLN to the max and realize we all have one mindset: measure everything in child benefit #satchat
A6. While I appreciate the push to create effective digital learning environments, without effective learning environments (in which we honor our Ss & challenge our biases) we will merely replicate oppressive systems in a new format #satchat
First Rob Porter departed - Now "Chief of Staff John Kelly" has to deal with "David Sorensen" who is the "Second White House" official who's also a wife beater. What the hell? which one is he anyway?
Basing what on? The fact that a 2nd grader may be off task for ours. I am a father of a 4th, 3rd, and 1st grader. I am also a principal of K-5 students that I observe every day. Younger, well all kids, if unmonitored will go off task very quickly. #satchat

I struggle with the best way to introduce typing to Ss. As a tech specialist I was expected to help Ss with that skill, but as an English teacher I felt like I just needed to get Ss writing, and the mechanics of it would follow. I've seen that happen in my own kids. #satchat
