CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good Morning! Pam Bernards, NCEA Director of Professional Development here to discuss all things STREAM, STEAM and STEM as the call for proposals is open for the 2019 NCEA New Directions STREAM 3.0 Conference with #CatholicEdChat! #NCEASTREAM
Hello all! Joining in from Providence, RI. Academic Dean and teacher of 7th/8th literature. Happy to be here to discuss all things #STREAM this morning! #catholicedchat

I am blessed to be joining you from sunny Jacksonville, FL as we welcome diocesan leaders for the Academy and the Cathlic Leadership Summit #catholicedchat
Good morning #CatholicEdChat! I’m Amy from Chicago. Ed.D candidate at @LoyolaChicago and ELA teacher. Looking forward to hearing people’s ideas about STREAM today!
I work for @GCCE_LUC as an Adjunct Faculty Member, teaching on-line asI live in RI. This week I had a chance to visit @HendrickenHawks and work with The Exceptional Learner Task Force, supporting Ss w/ disabilities to be Included and Belong in Cath Schls. #catholicedchat
5th Grade T @FAWcrusaders Fav memory this week was our annual school retreat @CMRCSCN and being a Confirmation sponsor for a former student. Heart is full. #CatholicEdChat
A1: in my MS classroom, our use @Flipgrid for quick assessment and student collaboration, @quizlet for review concepts and vocabulary, and Google classroom for lab reports. #CatholicEdChat
A1: If you #STREAM is set up in stations, you could include explanatory videos in each. Allows teacher to work with students-guiding discussion, asking leading questions, monitoring progress. #CatholicEdchat
A1. I provide students with videos so they may watch/re-watch in order to learn concept/skill. @Screencastify is a great tool to make quick videos. I love it! #CatholicEdChat
A1: We have started using Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (@CGSUSA) in our religion classes. It’s is all about hands on learning, student choice, and learning through exploration. A beautiful program that is #STREAM and #blendedlearning oriented. #catholicedchat
Highlight and A1: teacher, on suggestion from student, posted videos of his problem solving Demos. Now expanding to @edpuzzle quizzing. Students have already started submitting their "i can top that" videos. #catholicedchat
This is great. When I used to teach math I’d make video tutorials for each lesson and it was so clutch for kids who needed to hear it again or hear it slowly (and great for parents who had forgotten the math!) #CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat A1: Couple of things come to mind...1) would have students preview texts and ask their own questions via Google Classroom comments (they would follow previously agreed upon posting rules) and 2) see meme 👇🏼
Q2. What are some partnerships that you have with local community organizations such as higher education, business and industry partners, etc. that support and enhance STREAM, STEAM, STEM programming? #CatholicEdChat#NCEASTREAM
In class comparative polling is also beginning to take off again. Always nice to get data analytics it of the admin wrong and into classrooms. Plus helps encourage dialogue and introvert-expression. #datawhisperer#catholicedchat
A2- this one we're still working on but our Cultural Council supports our annual Design Lab day as do many volunteers. We also have lots of volunteers come science fair season #CatholicEdChat
A2: We are so thankful for our partnership with @providencecol! They support our school in so many ways from volunteers to facilities to financial support. With regards to #STREAM they have assisted in creating our new #MakerSpace#catholicedchat
.@DOPCathSchools have developed a partnership with The Highlander Institute to provide PD in Blended Learning. I learned to use @DoInkTweets last year to bring Green Screen Projects to my Theology class. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Eastside Catholic School Partnership, we have a day together w/ 8th grade to explore PLTW medical detectives at deanery high school @ScecinaNow#CatholicEdChat
A2: Partner with @ISUExtension - connected to Iowa State University and the 4H program. They are always willing to collaborate on projects. #CatholicEdchat
This is a wonderful program! I have been to a handful of PD sessions with @HighlanderInst and have always left feeling inspired and with many new ideas to implement in the classroom! #CatholicEdChat

@engelworks, @DOPCathSchools, @DoInkTweets, @HighlanderInst
This is wonderful. Sharing how you worked with @providencecol to assit with creating your new #MakerSpace can be helpful to those who are getting started with partneships like this! #CatholicEdChat

@mr_p_SPV, @providencecol, @providencecol
A2: Another partner is @NWIowaSTEM and @IowaSTEM - they coordinate the Iowa Governor's STEM Initiative. They have STEM kits for checkout. #CatholicEdchat
A2: our diocese partners with @ProjectEngin and uses the @GlobalGoalsUN as our framework for STEM work. Students pick a UN Sustainable Goal and a country to focus on and come up with a project to address it #CatholicEdChat
I'd love to know what type of 'teams' everyone has. We want to get DI and Lego League teams started. We have had @ecybermission in the past.... sometimes the struggle is lack of volunteers #catholicedchat
The rules: At least 8 characters, Capital + small letters, numbers, special symbols, no personal info. Everyone wanted to share to check whether their password passed the algorithm. We will share with parents @seesaw#catholicEdchat#nceaSTREAM Passwords Protect Ss stuff online

Q2. What are some partnerships that you have with local community organizations such as higher education, business and industry partners, etc. that support and enhance STREAM, STEAM, STEM programming? #CatholicEdChat#NCEASTREAM
I am so proud of this program. Our annual STEM fair is the absolute highlight of my year. So much more meaningful than baking soda volcanoes, empowers the kids that they are capable of coming up with solutions, and focuses entirely on social justice. #CatholicEdChat
as our students begin working to eagle scout, we see a lot of collaboration as well. the number of eagle scout projects that spend time on the whiteboards in the makerspace is impressive. Collaborative brainstorming alone is worth it. #catholicedchat#teamwork
A3: Ts are able to assist Ss in viewing their project (and the 🌍) using a #CatholicLens. Example: STREAM project Ss tried to solve the problem of squirrels sneaking into school cafeteria. #TrueStory Ts brought in Catholic teachings of stewards of creation, etc. #CatholicEdChat
A3: I don't feel I do much with STEAM but in terms of faith formation I could see the partnerships being models for community. Demonstrating reaching out to others and working together for the common good. #catholicedchat
Catholic Social Teaching helps Teachers reflect on the barriers to STEM careers for many groups, including women, persons of color, and persons w/ disabilities. #CatholicEdChat
Q3 #CatholicEdChat#nceaSTREAM My tech assistant who manages all school devices completed diocese faith formation and is gifted with #gospelvalues + lectio devina resources. We add bible verses to any and all #edTech content shared with Ss, Ts, parents.
A3 Authentic excitement for the Faith by instructional leaders comes across in everything they do. Strong faith formation makes integration across the curriculum a natural fit. #CatholicEdChat
A3: faith formation is central to meaningful incorporation of STEM/STREAM. If we truly know and believe our call from Jesus, how could we do anything else BUT work to solve problems with/for the marginalized? #CatholicEdChat
A3: I like to think faith formation helps me for MS students with projects that need to solve a problem. I often turn my STREAM projects for those grade levels into service projects. #CatholicEdChat
A3 faith is the mission behind the motor. All of the STEM (oh, and A and R....can i get a Y?) are tools and processes. If we are not learning for higher purpose, than we miss the point of being catholic educators. 1/2 #catholicedchat
A3.5: In building tall leaning towers with spaghetti and marshmallows, well-formed Catholic Ts bring in the “R” of STREAM by discussing labor costs, dignity of the worker, honesty in hiring. #CatholicLens#CatholicEdChat
2/2 ...when our makers began talking about how the 3D printed (and playable) violin was 1/5 the cost of a regular violin and began talking about helping bring back music programs to area schools -- thats when you know youve won. #catholicedchat
A3: The more I continue to learn about and develop my own personal faith life, the more I realize the way on which faith is integrated in all aspects of life and learning and the more comfortable I feel sharing this connection with students. #STREAM#CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat A3: also would share with them #saint stories like Oscar Romero’s and Chiara Bandano’s as they relate to #STREAM problem solving approaches.

A3: one 'problem' I am going to have 7th grade students work on in STEM Lab is "how can we get Catholics to attend mass more regularly". I want students to brainstorm ways to do this. I can see a marketing angle here
...videos, posters, etc. #CatholicEdChat
A3: I’m going to also say @SkypeClassroom sessions w/authors. Author @paleopaws was very inspiring in answering STEM Q/A through her writing process #CatholicEdChat
There is a wealth of expertise on this chat today. Think about submitting a proposal for the 2019 NCEA New Directions STREAM 3.0 Conference at https://t.co/I4jUBZkoqc CatholicEdChat We will be in Parsippany, New Jersey June 17-19, 2019 @NCEATALK
Monday, we're going to interrupt our regularly scheduled color-sensor challenge to tackle question: "how do you encourage person-to-person dialogue in large group settings" - going to show the robotics kids how design thinking can be applied to real word issues. #catholicedchat
A4- take risks myself, model the tech/apps so teachers will try it in their classrooms- celebrate their attempts and encourage more! @Flipgrid@breakoutEDU@quizlet are just a few we're encouraging #CatholicEdChat
although show is a bit of misnomer, since i plan on presenting the context of the challenge and watching them struggle, discuss, write on the whiteboard, and eventually be brilliant. #guidefrombehind#catholicedchat

Any Catholic “media” outfit NOT reporting the homo scandal at the Youth Synod here in Rome is lying to you by refusing to present the story behind the story. Have some integrity - tell the whole truth or resign. Stop using young people to advance your gay agenda homohierarchy.
A4 To encourage innovation, good ideas and new ideas, @reenkberg has us share Just Good Stuff at the beginning of our faculty meetings. #CatholicEdChat
A4. Modeling risk taking. Then acknowledging mistakes and collaborating with staff for help. Changing minds one conversation at a time. Bringing new ideas constantly. Not letting up. #CatholicEdChat
we do "what i'm seeing" shout outs in the weekly donut-day newsletter. Teacher wrote me back thanking me for making her and her department famous. Told her if she keeps having the kids create video PSAs about social justice, i will keep highlighting the work #catholicedchat

A4: My middle schoolers are terrified of academic risk and failure! We start each class with bellwork journaling where I encourage students to go out on a limb and make educated guesses about our readings. There are no penalties for wrong answers on bellwork! #Catholicedchat
A5: wish I had a better photo, but this is our Hall of Failures wall. At the beginning of the year when this was taken, it just says “I can’t… YET“ but as the year progresses, we add pictures and stories of famous failures who took awhile to succeed! #CatholicEdChat
This is brilliant! I’ve always thought we have a major PR problem in the Church. Let’s get kids thinking about using new technologies for evangelizing like @BishopBarron does. Evangelizing involves some marketing skills. 😊
#CatholicEdChat
after quick wins in the robotics class, we intentionally design some challenges that have more slip and variance. force the students to focus on the reflection after the challenges rather than the thrill of the "victory" - tough to unlearn the external motivator #catholicedchat
A4: To promote innovation and risk-taking: Reminded at #ITECia@ITEC_IA conference to stop asking questions that look for a "right" answer - get Ss thinking about possibilities by asking open-ended questions. #CatholicEdchat
We also spend time talking about great artists and how they did not ONLY produce great works, but often had to work through years of struggles and challenges before they produced their masterpiece(s)! #catholicedchat
Once a trimester, grades 5-8 modify their schedule to have a week long STEM afternoon. Projects address coding, problem solving, design, and engineering. #Catholicedchat
You are not alone. If Catholic schools truly want innovative thinking, risk taking and acceptance of failure are critical! Great you are helping them overcome this fear. #CatholicEdChat

it is not just about the kids. We have our second year teachers/staff visit the makerspace in order to feel let the feeling of creativity and anxiety wash over them the way it does the students. they see STEM(ARYKB) in a new way after that #catholicedchat
I am the Asst Principal at Ancillae-Assumpta Academy. Our students met their Sharing Partners yesterday as they celebrated Mission Day with bingo games. #Catholicedchat
Truth! As all my friends at @CatholicWriters can testify to this fact!
For me, it took eleven years of studying and practicing before my first novel released. Share that with your kids who want to be writers.
#CatholicEdChat
A5- We just had the most amazing PD Day with @mradamwelcome as the keynote.... and T's had breakouts focused on #STREAM programs. Want to launch an #edcamp in our Diocese too! At my school- we learn from each other and try new things!! #CatholicEdChat
A5 hands on! #CatholicEdChat@jene527 attended an amazing workshop this summer in Omaha where they spent time learning and then got to take home the free supplies. #CatholicEdChat
In this #ProLife novel #raceforeverychild will take you to emotional extremes #EduGladiators read this free on iBooks and lets have a #satchat#CatholicEdChat about life affirming decisions

i get something carb-y once a week for adults. Gives them a built in excuse to visit the makerspace/tech area, highlights some projects we/others are doing, and humanizes the IT crew. -- the "announcement" that donuts have arrived is our shoutout/update newsletter #catholicedchat

had a day where i asked kids to fling the most innovative thing they saw that day onto the jamboard that we have in the library. interesting watching innovation from the student-eye view :) #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat Another example of teaching success through failures👇🏼when reading @WendelinVanD The Running Dream.
Also, love using Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus and the Gentile Women. Keep stressing “growing in age and wisdom”.
Q4 #catholicEdChat#nceaSTREAM I use "making spaghetti" story to model #guidedinquiry search process. Brainstorm Ideas (go shopping for ingredients) + List keywords/refine search/take notes/cite sources (boil water to cook) + Review rubric to select best info (strain + serve).
Q6. How do you instill in students the idea that success can be defined in multiple ways? In other words, there is not just on “right” solution to a problem. #CatholicEdChat#NCEASTREAM
the free coffee and espresso machine is in my area too. know which buttons to push and the machine can work wonders...true in tech, true in teaching. :) #subtlemanipulationismyjam#catholicedchat

A6: I don't remember who to credit with this thought. Don't give students a recipe. If we give too many details on how the final product should look, we end up with the same exact answer from all students. Give them room to think and create. #catholicedchat
de-emphasize formal grading or at least un-link it from "right" answers. keep external rewards (prizes, stickers, etc) randomized so they dont become a behavioral expectation, mock the gunners (w/ love), keep reflecting on the bigger mission #manypathsonemountain#catholicedchat
#catholicedchat looks like I missed some great tweets and reflection on #stream. Will have to review to get some great ideas. Thanks everyone for sharing ideas that I can use in my school! #teachingsforlife
A6: Offer multiple assessments! Some students actually prefer a written test or essay, others want to build and design, others want to perform. If they are clearly expressing what they know and can do, why not let them do it in a way that suits them best? #Catholicedchat
A6: No one "right" solution - compare to quilters who each get the same fabric but create different beautiful quilts using different patterns. #CatholicEdchat
