#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

We want to hear your thoughts on Badges in school clubs. Plz include in your tweets
Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
We used self-made badges for Jr. FLL After School club. Team very young- needed push to build more complex machines
For the sake of our beloved lurkers, going to get started...hopefully the chatters show up soon:)
Q1: What school clubs and extracurricular activities offer prime badging opportunities?
Hi! I'm Shelly in TX! Excited to join you! Just saw I have given over 200 badges
I think needs to be achievable with clear guidelines and criteria.
in MD am currently researching microcredentials for a PhD class
Love it! What does FLL stand for? What were the Badges avail to ss?
Sorry, I meant to say are there Co-Curricular Records at the K12 level? I'm here at to find out...
Awesome! Hopefully this community can help you! DM me for some MD specifics in the pipeline
Maine Department of Education exploring badging for continued learning and prof development of teachers
Good point! Can you think of an example of how that might look?
FLL = To be clear, these were low-fi, printable stickers, collected on notecard rings. Very tangible.
that's topic of the field study & report I am working on for my PhD class.
A1: I think that any club can be prime ground for Badges...key is to engage ss + issue meaningful credentials
Maybe physical badges don't count, but I was inspired by digital badges. No platform (yet).
welcome to please share the results when you're finished
I think I speak for a lot of us when I ask you to share some pics!
A1: Clubs are great for because Ss are usually engaged in the subject matter already & WANT to learn and achieve.
Asa Church in York, PA teach and serves as After School Enrichment Director
I like the idea of both physical & digital badges especially for children!
I agree! https://t.co/YS5fpYBn4r
A1: I think that any club can be prime ground for Badges...key is to engage ss + issue meaningful credentials
so far I have looked at the TLJ Teachers Learning Journey as a potential starting point for discussions
OK, moving on to Q2...encourage everyone to think of specific examples
I'd say the issue becomes how to prevent factories...
Interesting, tell us more about that...
Defining acceptable evidence/aligning to standards validates anytime, anywhere learning that can count
I think that ensuring that the achievement had a sense of context in the world of https://t.co/cDTdKzpBsW
Q2: What are the keys to ensuring extracurricular Badges are meaningful?
A1 Language clubs, community service, 4H
I agree! https://t.co/LsYzH8RpJT

like degree factories or the shit Los Angeles decision to let D's get degrees. Devalues badges. part of solution
Agree! The criteria we expect AND the evidence of meeting it are huge!
do you have a link for that? I'm unfamiliar
I think for me looking at microcredentialing one of the problems in addition to building is who is responsible for assessment
Can we dig into the Community Serv example? As mentions, need to be clear about expectations. Ideas?
Yes--front of the badge is one thing, back of the badge (evidence, criteria, etc.) is what counts
This issue of validation comes up time and time again. Who do we trust? and do those ppl have time? https://t.co/D1WMrbvpru
I think for me looking at microcredentialing one of the problems in addition to building is who is responsible for assessment
Great points - important for both Ts and Ss receiving badges. Rigor and relevance are crucial.
that's very well presented chart on maths I think In response to eportfolio they are very bespoke
Hmm.. service hours is one way, shouldn't be the only way
For idea of Community Service, I love idea of Badges and wonder what they'd credential, what criteria might be...
Thx, I agree many/most are integrated silos
Right?!?! Seems we could credential something of greater value than the number of hours served...
Friendly reminder to use so everyone sees your tweets:)
I'd go beyond service hours to nature of task and how aligns w/civic participation, collab w/others etc
do we need microdential industry similar to testing industry to make it work for teachers
Yes! Also leadership, care put into work, helping others, etc https://t.co/cwTNqxgKi5
Hmm.. service hours is one way, shouldn't be the only way
Could offer around # of hours within certain areas like: health care, environment, animals, etc.
Great question. If it goes in that direction, will we be pleased or feel like failures?
Good question! I believe Open Badges sort of does this in general https://t.co/XiyFvk4e9V
do we need microdential industry similar to testing industry to make it work for teachers
https://t.co/AHkQOP1RTk
peer assessment may help alliviate this issue everyone could peer to peer assess and vote on your assessment
I think so too! Ss can earn "Interaction" or "Awareness" etc Badges...service is *how* criteria met
Now you're channeling UMich! Great minds think alike on
Did you guys see this chat on BADGES?!
Struggling to keep up with these great shares! Keep em coming while moving on to Question 3
Q3: Who are likely audiences for these extracurricular Badges?
We're chatting on Mondays at 6:30pmET. Join us!
but with no oversight group getting credit for having done it is more difficult
A lot of folks agree with that idea of peer assessment. Speaks to sustainability
I think lots about what goes home to Ps about After School Enrichment programs. Kids happy? Re-register. But badges comm. more
potential employers or post secondary groups looking at whether the student is well rounded
A3 *Should* be college admissions, scholarships, work placement selectors
I think you'd be looking along the lines of pupils embarking on going to university as they will need relevant skills
Nice! Badges can be powerful parent communication tool...tells deeper, richer narrative about ss skills/achievement
Hopefully some forward-thinking college leaders are among our lurkers tonight:)
First timer here in ...what have I stumbled upon??
Final question: Q4 What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
Welcome! We get together every Mon at 6:30pmET to chat Digital Badges, share learning and push thinking
A3: College and work readiness, for sure - how might we create authentic audiences, relevant for middle school?
A3: Knowing will be seen by employers, college admissions, etc. may encourage Ss to explore more clubs/activities.
peer assessment then goes to community building which is sometimes lacking? Who is "qualified" to assess?
I think simplifying the process would make it easier for everyone to be involved and wider partipation
A4: Takeaway is Badges in clubs can credential stuff that's invisible on transcripts but matters to colleges + employers
Can you share more about what the process looks like?
our middle schoolers apply if they want to get into the STI HS programs badges would give support to application
Some platforms have value that anyone who has earned the Badge has expertise to validate others
the UMich and Active Voice resource will be helpful in my current research
Thanks to all who joined and huge shoutout to the lurkers for sticking with us! Thx to for moderating!
Next week will be on Google Hangout to dive into some cool Badge work. Hit me up if you'd like to share!
Have a great night everybody!
Thank you for another great learned a lot! Thanks to for organizing! Next week a Hangout
Aligning badge to state standards. Educreate lets teachers create classroom-based badges
So glad I stumbled upon . We're doing a lot of work w badges in middle school; I'll definitely be back
pleased if it allows teachers to not sit in the drive by PD
