A1: My ability to take risks and try new things. Also my ability to realize that I can't do it all. Peace with who I am and excitement about who I am becoming. #bcedchat
Wishing that I could join everyone at #bcedchat tonight but I’ve got a sick kiddo who demands cuddles... lucky for her, cuddles are my favourite! Enjoy the chat, can’t wait to read it all later! @bcedchat@CraigMah
A1: over time, I feel I’m more in touch with the relationship building of students, staff and parents. At the beginning, I focused on more superficial connections. #bcedchat
A1 when I first unleashed “passion projects” I said I was “embracing chaos” - but now (& w guidance from people like @Sugatam & @CITCproject) I now “trust the process” that has become #geniushour#bcedchat
A1: My teaching practice in general! Every year I learn, I grow, I try new things, I reflect, I change & my teaching practice reflects this. Class management, student engagement, project/ place/ passion based learning, assessment, & making sure all of my Ss progress. #bcedchat
A1: over time, I feel I’m more in touch with the relationship building of students, staff and parents. At the beginning, I focused on more superficial connections. #bcedchat
A1 also my sons reflections on life with generalized anxiety and autism have given me increasingly deeper empathy into the complex brain - strategies which in turn helps all learners #bcedchat
Hi Carrie... welcome to #bcedchat. I feel the same way. "I learn, I grow, I try new things, I relfect, I change & my teaching practice reflects this." #bcedchat
Q2 Gewürztraminer is one of the hardest wine words to pronounce, talk about one of the hardest things that as an educator you have had to overcome and are now winning at? #bcedchat
Q2 Gewürztraminer is one of the hardest wine words to pronounce, talk about one of the hardest things that as an educator you have had to overcome and are now winning at? #bcedchat
A2-Maybe not winning but making progress in developing support plans that starts with students strengths. Definitely better than I used to be at giving students autonomy over what they want and need support to look like for them. #bcedchat
A2 the patience in shifting mindsets. Modelling and encouraging go a long way, whether that has been promoting a coding mindset (easier with @codeorg) or shifting assessment practices for formative descriptive feedback loops via efolios such as @Scholantis#bcedchat
A2: The hardest thing I have done is working through the emotional trauma of our students when I often feel inadequate in supporting them beyond being present for them. #bcedchat
Amazing what can happen when students can have ownership in their learning (and why I have enjoyed how Project based learning can greatly personalize the experience! #bcedchat
A2: Doubting myself. In my first few years of teaching I would feel rattled if challenged by my students or parents. I have long over come that and have learned to trust myself and be able articulate my thoughts or approaches. #bcedchat
Q3: The ability to sniff out and untangle the subtle threads that weave into complex wine aromas is essential for tasting...what are some essential things that we need for our complex classrooms? #bcedchat
Q2: Language insecurity - as a Franco-ontarien coming into schools w/ a majority of Québecois parents & Ts, I was often judged for my accent. I haven't overcome it, but I feel more confident. I think my work speaks for itself, no matter the language. #bcedchat

#bcedchat A2 Trusting the process and knowing that my students will be successful because I now accept that success will look different for all my learners.
A1: I'm getting better at finding the joy in small successes. Celebrating growth (mine and others) - not striving for 'perfection' but being grateful for opportunities to grow, reflect, share and collaborate. #bcedchat
A2: The hardest thing has been having ss with trauma in the classroom and not taking it home with me. I am way better at it than I used to be. #bcedchat
A3 when we know we are teaching people and the “subjects” are just organizers....it makes it meaningful when we know who our learners are, not just what they do (or don’t do) every learner belongs in the complex makeup that is their class! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2 Trusting the process and knowing that my students will be successful because I now accept that success will look different for all my learners.
Hello! I’m Robyn, i teach k/1 French Immersion in Lake Country. My passion is for community building & fostering relationships. I’m learner centred, ever learning and a strong believer in teaching SEL & Mindul practice. #joyfullearning thanks #bcedchat
A3. Someone having your back. We do not operate alone or in isolation. We are interconnected and need to acknowledge that. In complex systems, we need to be supporting each other and helping each other RISE. #bcedchat
A3 the five sense, smell ( intuition), ear ( rumors) taste ( teaching ) touch ( juts don't ) see ( watch what is going on ) Trying hard to be funny tonight #bcedchat
Q3: The ability to sniff out and untangle the subtle threads that weave into complex wine aromas is essential for tasting...what are some essential things that we need for our complex classrooms? #bcedchat
A3: Fantastic question. We need compassion, kindness, fun, humour and dancing. My class love dancing with me when there is stress in the classroom. #bcedchat
A3: Ressources (Human + other), Time, Space. More ressources en Français or more time to spend collaborating with other on these. Not books. but intentionally planned lessons w / vocabulary integration. #bcedchat
A1: my belief system about joyful learning, my aim to connect families to our community/learning journey and my ability to say “no” more often. #bcedchat
A3: Fantastic question. We need compassion, kindness, fun, humour and dancing. My class love dancing with me when there is stress in the classroom. #bcedchat
A3 lets try another methaphore. Trying to say things ( sulfite ) that your student will understand and not give you a headache... ( still trying hard ) #bcedchat
A1: my belief system about joyful learning, my aim to connect families to our community/learning journey and my ability to say “no” more often. #bcedchat
Q4: At first glance, a wine label can be confusing, so much information and often in a different language. When just getting started in education what did you find confusing and unsure of? #bcedchat
Q3: The ability to sniff out and untangle the subtle threads that weave into complex wine aromas is essential for tasting...what are some essential things that we need for our complex classrooms? #bcedchat
A3-We need to know our students. How they want to learn-groups, partners, alone, noisy/quiet room. What they bring with them everyday-Who they are
#bcedchat
Q4: At first glance, a wine label can be confusing, so much information and often in a different language. When just getting started in education what did you find confusing and unsure of? #bcedchat
A2: asking for help, self care & walking away from things that hurt my spirit or rob me of my joy. We have to take care of the people who take care of our kids... (self-compassion & grace are ever challenging). #bcedchat
Q2 Gewürztraminer is one of the hardest wine words to pronounce, talk about one of the hardest things that as an educator you have had to overcome and are now winning at? #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3 Understanding. Our learners come from many different places and home spaces we need to show and model caring and understanding. #acceptance Our learners look to us to see how we accept “others”.
A3: The cultural capital students have or don't have. If they are not focusing we need to determine if it is learning based (do they not understand and why?), is there emotional stuff going on at home or friends, are they eating, sleeping? Not to jump to conclusions. #bcedchat
A3: In our complex classrooms we need hope and optimism that all students can learn and grow. We need to "know" our students, their stories, their learning styles their strengths so that we can support them to flourish and thrive in their own unique way. #bcedchat
A4. Classroom and school dynamics. What's the culture? What kind of culture do I want to create? What's my role in participating in these cultures? #bcedchat
A4: When I first started teaching I so wanted to try out all the things I had learned at university so can't remember finding anything that was confusing. #bcedchat
A4. When I started, we were in whole language and Year 2000. Developing a good pedagogical foundation is important but that doesn’t come in year one or two. #bcedchat
A4 just like wine you know the name of the ingredients but new one come that you have never seen before arrived year after year. For its the pace, of you have the right team, your learning will be exponential. Graduating is not the end its the beginning of your journey #bcedchat
A4:Curriculum was a mystery to me. Because of that, spent a lot of time working trying to plan & decide what was important. I spent so much time working, no work life balance. I was unsure this was the right profession for me. Happy I got help & managed to stick it out! #bcedchat
A4. Classroom and school dynamics. What's the culture? What kind of culture do I want to create? What's my role in participating in these cultures? #bcedchat
A4 contd. When I moved to Canada I found it really confusing that education was not federal and that each province had its own way of doing things and accepted different qualifications. Still grappling with that. #bcedchat
Q4 When I was in Uni, EVERYthing was overwhelming. It took me three years (no lie) to find a pencil sharpener. So now, when something seems insurmountable, I think "Just need to find the pencil sharpener...."
#bcedchat
A4 on a serious here, i am a part of the synergy of our school, it is my choice to see if i participate in the continuation of the culture or i become counter culture. #bcedchat
Q4: At first glance, a wine label can be confusing, so much information and often in a different language. When just getting started in education what did you find confusing and unsure of? #bcedchat
I know many talented educators who felt they didn’t ‘do well’ in school (not sure what that means) and are amazing in connecting and teaching. #bcedchat
When I moved from Ontario to BC, it took over a year, lots of letters, and many phone calls before I could get my certification accepted. However, NZ, UK, etc would have taken me no problem! #bcedchat
Q5: When at a wine tasting event, it is not frowned upon for spitting wine out that you do not like. What are some things that you think should have been thrown out but are still around? #bcedchat
A4 I have always wanted to “try different” and I never fully understood why so many (including myself at the start) would rely on old textbooks/strategies when new ideas and strategies were being more available! #bcedchat
A4. Classroom and school dynamics. What's the culture? What kind of culture do I want to create? What's my role in participating in these cultures? #bcedchat
I think as a new teacher I would be a little lost - as an experienced teachers, I really love the new curriculum. I need to remember this when I work with new Ts or Ts who are still trying to transition. Scaffolding is so important! #bcedchat
Q5: When at a wine tasting event, it is not frowned upon for spitting wine out that you do not like. What are some things that you think should have been thrown out but are still around? #bcedchat
My English teaching qualifications got accepted straight away in Ontario. I moved to BC to find out I needed to do courses in Canadian History and English! #bcedchat
To be honest I have been teaching for 19 years and still feel insecure, disorganized and wait and see mentality... it like the neverending story #bcedchat
Agreed. As experienced teachers, I love the new curriculum. Scaffolding is key. Takes time and patience to develop. I hope that new teachers will be patient and kind to themselves as they develop this skill and pedagogy. #bcedchat
A4:When i began teaching some Ss still lived in institutions & attended special schools. I had a class where nobody talked so very difficult to promote language or social interaction. Even though inclusion is challenging it's so much better than our previous alternative #bcedchat
It's amazing how fearful we are of asking for help. But makes me realize how our Ss may feel. Last year, with my concussion, I was always asking for help. I hope that my Ss realize how powerful we are as a group & continue to ask for help themselves. #bcedchat
A5 well there is always someone who puts cork in your class. I wish to put away the negative thinker around me and i have a good tribe where synergy strive #bcedchat
Thanks @tracyacramer and @ChristineYH for moderating tonight’s #bcedchat! Creative questions! I’m off to take the dog out for a walk. Have a great week!
@LisaRead We are definitely an important part of the rich tapestry of diversity in education. Not the best but empathetic of the importance of reaching those "outside pins" #bcedchat
Me too! I had to get a principal to observe me and write a letter saying I was competent in those subjects! It was so frustrating. But I believe the rules have changed recently to be sure that if you were certified in one province, you were certified in all. #bcedchat

So true! This is why I do it now. We are continually asking our kids to show up & be brave about the unknown.... what better way than to show them how it never stops and how we cope with life, hopefully calmly. This IS what we do. #guidinghumans#bcedchat
A5: percentages, letter grades, bell curves (still used in some undergrad courses) and any assessment that ranks instead of promotes further learning. #bcedchat
A5. Grades. Can we please move to learning progress, comments and portfolios using triangulation (product, observations, conversations) instead of a letters or percentages that don't represent learning! #bcedchat
A5: percentages, letter grades, bell curves (still used in some undergrad courses) and any assessment that ranks instead of promotes further learning. #bcedchat

A5: percentages, letter grades, bell curves (still used in some undergrad courses) and any assessment that ranks instead of promotes further learning. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5 Letter grades. We are almost there though I hope. Not currently happy because we still have to provide one for PSR at the end of the year (or in other circumstances).
A5: The expectation that everyone needs to be "green"... Thanks @tweetsomemoore The focus on conformity and compliance rather than celebrating the uniqueness that each of us brings to the world. #bcedchat
Not to say that this is an assessment and evaluation chat, but letter grades have to go. We need to understand competency based learning better so that we can make the shift for the long term. #bcedchat
A6 I am nervous about the proposed funding model in BC blending the rest of the speced funding into the per pupil funding ratio. In 2002 the belief was “no more funding for those categories” when it was there...just mixed in so it was never separated... #bcedchat
I’m still a “new teacher”, 12 yrs in. There’s always something to Learn and improve on...no room for stagnation in education. Overwhelming! I’m good at many things, still working on managing allllll the info/paper that comes at us and finding the right planning tools 🤷🏻♀️#bcedchat
As a novice tchr I've been always interested in trying new things, but it could be very overwhelming. I didn't have much work-life balance. I was advised to make 1-2 major changes a yr to keep myself sane. And always focus on process, not trying to get it perfect #bcedchat
A6. That people don't understand the intentions of new curriculum and 21st century learning and mistake initiatives as "doing something wrong" versus taking a risk to do something right. #bcedchat
A5: the entire class doing the same thing. We need to adapt for ability, prior knowledge, and passions. Ss can all be learning differently within the same curricular competencies. Options are important. #bcedchat
A? I fear change that is too quickly, too many things are happening in schools and people are not always ready for it. I am praising slow learning now #bcedchat
A6 My big fear right now is a personal one-- I am sad/scared to see @Rodroad219 retire from #sd79learn. We've come so far with the curriculum, core comps, IndEd, etc etc... #bcedchat
Agreed. Formative assessment practices... and summative assessments that turn into formative. We all need feedback to learn and do better, if need to. #bcedchat
A6: I'm nervous as well. I was in education when the formula funding for Ss in high incidence categories was put in the block. We saw reduction in service for those students. Moving from a deficit focussed funding model is positive but only if there is adequate support. #bcedchat
A6 I am nervous about the proposed funding model in BC blending the rest of the speced funding into the per pupil funding ratio. In 2002 the belief was “no more funding for those categories” when it was there...just mixed in so it was never separated... #bcedchat
A6-Our province has some challenges ahead with the restored language, revised curriculum and uncertainty about how it all needs to come together to continue to improve students' learning. #bcedchat
@Rodroad219 has been very influential in the shift in BC education....esp in assessment and reporting! Time for the rest of us to stand on his metaphorical shoulders and keep the work going! #bcedchat
Totally agree! Change is always hard. I like the new curriculum, but I know many colleagues don't share the same sentiment. Even some experienced tchrs are a little scared about the freedom and flexibility. And yes scaffolding is key! #bcedchat
A6: Rob Fleming (no relation) is supposed to come out with a statement soon about funding and teacher shortage. don't like not knowing what he is going to say. Just have to wait it out. #bcedchat
Hey all just popping in to say FUN must always be in my teaching. This is for both students and me. If we dont have fun learning we have nothing. #bcedchat
A7 I appreciated in one of my “50 days of Landy staff feedback forms” that a teacher confirmed that I am always there for all students. Kiddos I work (and have worked) with are always on my mind! #bcedchat
Hey all just popping in to say FUN must always be in my teaching. This is for both students and me. If we dont have fun learning we have nothing. #bcedchat
A7: Relationships matter. Play, curiosity, wonder, matter. There is a belief in Canada that one voice can change the world and I want my ss to live like that. #bcedchat
A7 I always put things at the a ring at the bottom of my glass to make sure its mine, i don't like when people drink in my glass without asking. I always try to include reflection, no learning without it. I want my ss to have a voice not the reflection of others #bcedchat
A7-Connecting with kids and families-listening/hearing/understanding their stories and how that influences how they engage or are reluctant/fearful of engaging in education. #bcedchat
A7-Connecting with kids and families-listening/hearing/understanding their stories and how that influences how they engage or are reluctant/fearful of engaging in education. #bcedchat
A7 b/c I work in Tech, it's always a slippery slope to remind (and remember) that PEDAGOGY is the driver (and tech is the accelerator), so I put in tech, as well is IndEd/ FPPL, core comps and AFL #bcedchat
With respect, it's not people don't understand the intentions of the new curric, it is people are very wary of the new curric, because a lack of resources and the research showing a skills/competency based curric lowers students achievement compared to a knowl based one #bcedchat
Experience having those tough conversations with families and not knowing all the answers but open to finding questions altogether (parents, students, teachers) #bcedchat#bced#alwayslearning
A6: Fear of change. I am going to keep sharing ressources, giving workshops & hoping to get more Ts on board. @tweetsomemoore once told me that a bus driver can't force people to get on, but they can keep coming around & sharing until Ts are ready to hop on board. #bcedchat
@Rob_Fleming was a very good education critic when in opposition -going to be interesting to see how the funding model shifts (and the plan to absorb categorized student funding into per pupil allotment has been talked about for nearly a decade) and influences the year #bcedchat
Please join #bcedchat next week on Sun. Dec 16th at 7pm PST for “A Christmas Holiday Themed Chat” CELEBRATING THE SEASON with @janetchowmsc and @technolandy.
#bcedchat A7 Being an inquirer and always asking questions with the desire to learn more. We need to be lifelong learners. Culture, indigenous perspective/world view, so important with redesigned curriculum.
