#UKEdChat Q1 again
Quite simply, are you for or against the current way GCSE and A-Levels are taken? Why do you believe this?
▶Please use the hashtag & A1◀
#ukedchat A1. Basically yes, but don’t like how narrow they’ve become. Should allow for vocational opportunities rather than everything relying on an exam at the end of the course of study. Only provides a few to shine, and does not allow for wider application of skills.
A great start with the first #ChatPhysics this evening! Talking all things KS3 Physics. Lots of things to think about. Twitter really is one of the best sources of teacher CPD out there! Check out next weeks chat -7pm Thursdays. #UkEdChat#ASEChat
This has been such a fantastic hour!! Thanks so much for joining us tonight everyone! Next Thursday your host will be @emc2andallthat, who will be chatting about Teaching Electric Circuits. Join us then for more #ChatPhysics@fabphysics out!!
A1: I would quite like the return of AS or something modular at A level but more importantly I believe we need stability for at least 5 years for the sake of staff and students #UKEdChat
A1 - Yes and No. For History (my subject) the method of examination doesn't give the chance for everyone to do well, no matter what their ability. Those who have a natural interest in History are not able to "succeed" as the way of assessing is so limited #ukedchat
Would a portfolio assessment help for some students in History, do you think? #UKEdChat How would that look? Would students have to go into greater depth to show their learning and understanding?
A1 I think the exams are high stakes and can mean for students who aren't able to perform well in exams receive a final grade that may not reflect their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a particular subject. #UKEdChat
Absolutely loved this from one of my Year 6 today after a discussion about #Brexit ‘Miss Hough, do you think that when we leave the EU everyone will get a leavers hoody?’ 😂😂 #Year6#PrimaryRocks#UKEdChat
#ukedchat an interesting approach. Not sure how it would look (requires some thought). Definitely the portfolio approach would mean students who couldn't write as well could submit work in alternative and more modern ways.
Do you think exams should be scrapped at 16 #ukedchat ? Education to 18, taking final exams when ready, perhaps? This way, basic maths and literacy skills can be developed, rather than focusing on a critical exam.
Indeed, I just think it would be more inclusive to those who love the subject, but can’t cope with exams, or remembering so much knowledge across so many subjects #UKEdChat
I will certainly be digging this out when we review radiation next HT. Good example of an accessible scientific text to build in literacy skills to science lessons #UKEdChat#ASEChat#ChatPhysics
A2 I think selecting subjects at A level can mean a very narrow curriculum. A broader curriculum may offer students more experiences and choices. Vocational equivalents should be available for any student who wants them ... #UKEdChat
You’ll have seen quite a few changes in the English Language and Literature exam approaches? #ukedchat what works best, do you think, for the majority?
A2 and not just seen as something for students who are perceived to be less academic. There are countries around the world who provide these courses and it means they have skilled people to do the jobs that they need doing. We have skills shortages in some industries. #UKEdChat

Love this thread! 🔥👊💥
Inclusion to me means... compassion and collaboration! It's a community of acceptance, belonging, participation, understanding, love, equal opportunities for all and breaking down barriers to learning and society! #InclusionMatters#Love#SEND#UKEdChat

An EEF trial found students who were involved in @ssat's Embedding Formative Assessment programme made +2 additional months’ progress in their Attainment 8 GCSE scores.

A4 No. We are humans first, learners second. I've quoted that from @MaryMyatt and her talk yesterday. So it follows we are humans first, employees second. #UKEdChat
Firefly Home by Jane Clarke and Britta Teckentrup - There's no place like home, but poor Florence is lost, and there are so many bright lights shining in the night sky she doesn't know which way to go - daily new children's book #ukedchat#readingrockshttps://t.co/W2BhH7RM5e
From what I know, a baccalaureate system would offer an opportunity for everyone to shine, with little hierarchy of qualifications #UKEdChat A6 (such as a prejudice of BTECs and ALevels)
#ukedchat A6 Definition of Baccalaureate hints at why we have examinations but not their value in life. "an examination intended to qualify successful candidates for higher education"
A6 A broader curriculum so that students aren't specialising in a few subjects. It may lead them to develop a passion or interest in a field they may not have originally thought would be in their top 3 (like A levels). #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A4 -picked these up from @timminchin and relate to them a lot. 1. To be hard on your opinions - being intellectually rigorous, identifying your biases, prejudices & privileges. 2. To respect those less powerful than you. 3. Be micro-ambitious, not necessarily a dreamer.
I honestly can't wait till I'm a teacher! I've always wanted to be one and even more so now, that it's within touching distance. I have so many ideas of what I can do. What's your favourite part of being a teacher? #whyiloveteaching#ukedchat#sen#send#edutwitter#PrimaryRocks

A8 They need to be taught about mental well being especially with the figures around male suicide. They need to be taught about budgeting, cooking from scratch, basic DIY... all the things that come in useful but only some learn if their parents taught them #UKEdChat

1/2. Be numerate, with good maths fluency. Data (and s/Sheets are everywhere so they need to be able to ‘read numbers’ and sense check things. Excellent communication skills - esp. writing and editing. Think about how many emails, word docs and PPTs we all write now.
2/2. Be a good team player - sports / drama are excellent for this. Being a part of something bigger. And a fourth would be attitude: turn up on time, sit up straight, lean in, be polite - if you can’t out-think them, out-work them.
A8 In terms of subjects, reading because reading for pleasure has been shown to be more important than wealth or social class in how well a person does. Mathematical reasoning is another vital area of learning. I'm not sure about which other subjects. #UKEdChat
