A1: Cogenerative circlces combined with coteaching from @chrisemdin is a great combo. Acquire feedback from students, try it, plan new lesson with students, and let them teach it! #BmoreEdchat
A1: Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices; get to know & keep asking abt ur Ss media/pop culture interests using surveys, convos, etc. Bring those into ur teaching! #BmoreEdchat
A1: I teach pre-service teachers. So I believe it is my job to model practices I expect them to use in their future classrooms. Not sure how innovative this is, but I am very intentional about only using positive images/videos of children (and teachers) of color.
A1: Maybe not super innovative, but I like to give students time to develop individual perspectives/responses to discussions before sharing out with classmates. I try to give everyone a voice. #BmoreEdchat
A1: Cogenerative circles promote a positive and safe learning environment for all our students where they feel their voice matters and they are emotionally cared for. Also, by including books with children (and teachers) of color! #BmoreEdChat
A2: We contextualize current events with historical precedents. One way we do this is to ask students for current issues they care about, then have them explore our “Making a Change” timeline to find events on similar topics. https://t.co/c0v9OMPNAC#BmoreEdchat

A2: Make connections between curriculum & current events as they play out in the media & pop culture. Do the work! Use @Newseum front pages! #bmoreedchat
A2: PARCC like writing items can incorporate current events and nonfiction. In 6th grade we compared two texts which extended the content from class in a cold read and cold write assessment. #BmoreEdchat
A2: Connecting current events articles to the standards in the curriculum is super important. By asking the students how the current event is similar to another text or subject we've talked about makes it easy to connect to the curriculum. #BmoreEdChat
Thanks for hosting us! I'm just getting out of a town hall meeting on Baltimore County Budget planning #RedforEd so I'm going to be a little slow on my chatting. But I'm here for #BmoreEdchat !
The only museum my 16-year-old daughter still talks about, years after her visit, is the @Newseum. It's important to give young people a voice, but also important to understand how and what they hear and remember. #BmoreEdChat
A2: It’s pretty easy! With the @WitWisdomELA curriculum we have module themes. During small group time, I find LEVELED articles via @Newsela that align to our theme. Most recently, we read about the arrest of @21savage in our immigration unit (check latest tweet). #BmoreEdchat
A1. I find that it is often my students who are inspiring me. We did a gardening lesson today as past of our food justice exploration and they took the learning to a new level. I facilitate and support while they lead and inspire. #BmoreEdchat

A2: Current events provide an awesome springboard to teach reading and literacy in any content area. Ss struggle with argument writing, so anytime you can weave a quick opp. for Ss to practice this skill is a win! #bmoreedchat
A3: Introducing articles, videos, and social media posts about youth who are following their dreams follows the Kids At Hope attitude that @SolleyAACPS promotes! Promoting that dreams can come true is an extremely important part of developing a child's well being. #BmoreEdChat
A3: I mean, just turn on the computer and it’s THERE. I do it by speaking openly, honestly, and, lost importantly, as OBJECTIVELY as possible so that students can formulate their own opinions on what the current events are AND how the media is projecting them. #BmoreEdChat
A3: since my students may have limited experiences (age, sensory sensitivities, etc) media and technology allows them to experience otherwise unknown situations which expands their future #BmoreEdChat
A1: It's not particularly innovative, but really important and often overlooked: names and faces. Our Ss must be able to SEE themselves in your content to be successful. They must be represented in the posters, word problems, and materials used in your class. #bmoreedchat
@wideangleym has produced some amazing work that helps my students understand Baltimore youth...not just as statistics...but as young people with futures of their own. #BmoreEdchat

A1: I wouldn’t consider this innovative, but as a CTE teacher in a school serving 90% students of color I made sure that my students had business people of color as a point of reference. I needed my students to embrace the possibilities. #BmoreEdChat
@bmoreedchat A3: Media is a great way to engage our kids & capitalize on talents they have. Using ClassDojo to predict & set behavior goals or PollEverywhere to analyze exit ticket data in real time or to present visual stories to address stories of change in school #BmoreEdChat
A4: We scaffold this goal with an activity in which students take on the roles of historical figures on opposing sides of social issues: History Through H@ndles https://t.co/LyUQEibkxP It provides a safe entry point to/practice with using #edtech responsibly. #BMoreEdChat

Q1: Our Black Hist. Month mini-unit starts next wk. Ss will research + create a product of their choice to showcase a Black engineer, inventor or computer scientist. Their work will lead to a Socratic about why the work of certain pops. is often overlooked/minimized. #bmoreedchat
@bmoreedchat A2: I love looking at & doing a weekend share-out to begin my Monday or beginning of the week. Our Intervention period is another way to hook students especially as we seek to solve local & global issues. Media drives their pursuit of global citizenry #BmoreEdChat
A1: Teachers who are deliberate in their attempts to deliver culturally relevant content may not always consider the messaging and empowerment that should accompany it - just receiving the information does not always reach the heart. #BmoreEdchat
A2. Being a teacher of Environmental Science it is very easy to incorporated current events into my lessons especially when it comes to the unit on global warming. #BmoreEdchat
A3. I encourage my Ss to be producers not only consumers. In our study of the Star Spangled Banner @FtMcHenryNPS, 5th grade examined FSK’s vision for the country, then used @canva to express their own current vision using their digital media production skills #BmoreEdChat
A2: Given the tone of the country, our current events are a great window into the past - very easy connections made to ongoing civil rights struggles. Often use this practice as a warm-up for class instruction to "stay in line" #BmoreEdchat
@bmoreedchat A1: I begin the year looking at children “just like us” who have done great things. The young black girl selling lemonade. Malala’s story of bravery. Students marching for gun laws. The stories are endless and media means those stories can be ours #BmoreEdChat
A4: We scaffold this goal with an activity in which students take on the roles of historical figures on opposing sides of social issues: History Through H@ndles https://t.co/LyUQEibkxP It provides a safe entry point to/practice with using #edtech responsibly. #BMoreEdChat
A4: Capitalize on the capabilities of social media to give everyone a voice. Demonstrate the idea that a #hashtag can be a catalyst for conversation and change. #BmoreEdChat
@bmoreedchat A4: Social media strategies like refining your voice & knowing your audience are a great way to reinforce literacy objectives in the writing domain. Targeting likeminded folks but also understanding the opposite argument breeds confidence in the concept #BmoreEdChat
Q5: How can one alter the teaching and learning of social studies to make it more meaningful and influential in the lives of our students? #BmoreEdchat
A5: We draw explicit connections to the 1st Amendment, especially to students’ rights in and beyond the classroom. Ex: We have case studies https://t.co/D6u7xc3aN2 and virtual classes https://t.co/7eLvalFxQy that tackle when speech and assembly are NOT disruptive #BMoreEdChat
A2: There isn’t enough space to tell it all. Marketing is ubiquitous and I could pull from sports, art, government, etc. to teach concepts. #BmoreEdChat
A5: Service learning project which is student led and improves the school community. Social studies should include more local history so that students understand the stories before them. #BmoreEdchat
A4: By showing students that social media platforms are not just for entertainment, and that one tweet or post can make a change. Challenge older students to try it out one day... tweet at a senator, principal, or another teacher and show the change! #BmoreEdchat
A5: Use @MyBaltimoreBook so the students relate to what they’re learning about! Also, find the connections between the SS experiences and the material you are teaching. #BmoreEdChat
A5: I once had to #annotate a historical text for a project in grad school. It was an amazing way to explore the language and constructs in the dominant narrative. Could@be done in groups at the K-12 level! #bmoreedchat
Q5: How can one alter the teaching and learning of social studies to make it more meaningful and influential in the lives of our students? #BmoreEdchat
A5: Make it about today & now. Have students know their local leaders, the agenda of the school board meetings, what Annapolis is up to. Anytime my students reference "the government" I always stop them~ and ask...who do you think the government is??
I am teaching a Towson course next fall with @jessicashiller that brings TU undergrads into Baltimore community schools. Our students answer the call of the school (tending gardens, leading Girl Scouts, college essay writing workshops for students). Pretty great. #BmoreEdChat
Q5: Requiring actionable outcomes. Showed my kids "The Children's March" to demonstrate their power and how they can be active change agents. Sometimes just a project that allows them to teach a lower grade level new info #BmoreEdchat
A5: allow discussion of WHY. History and government is not merely learning dates, but analyzing how people interact and influence. Many prior problems can be relevant today and students can work to solve them together. #BmoreEdChat
@bmoreedchat A5: The biggest way to alter social studies in a more meaningful way is to have students use media to become ethnographic researchers in their communities based on what they are interested in solving. Put student voice in the mix #BmoreEdchat
A6: We start with a Buzzfeed-like quiz https://t.co/39VJSp8iSF to help students identify their “freedom type,” then lead evidence-based debates that emphasize asking questions and seeking multiple perspectives. #BmoreEdChat (1/2)
A5: tell the truth about history (long ago and contemporary) so we don’t continue the status quo of exclusionary, racist and elitist policies and practices clouded under the guise of democracy and meritocracy. ,#BmoreEdchat

I haven’t done this myself, but a great way to use media to expose students to communities beyond your school is through virtual visits with other classrooms around the world via Skype, FaceTime, google hangout. Set up a partnership with another teacher🌎 A3 #BmoreEdchat
A6: By beginning the discussion in a restorative circle, that gives students a chance for their voice to be heard, sans disruptions. Continuing the conversation with a Socratic Seminar allows the conversation to flow smoothly and be more inclusive #BmoreEdchat

@bmoreedchat A6: I practice being open and vulnerable myself in these conversations. We set rules about rights and responsibilities...obligations and decency. Lead with the heart and assume best intent. I also start small and go big using a 2-4-8-all strategy. #BmoreEdChat
A6: Are the relationships in the room ready for those conversations? Example: if the Ts do not have a strong rapport yet, attempting sensitive topics may do harm instead of good. Also, is there a culture of respect amount Ss so voices will be heard? #BmoreEdChat
A5: tell the truth about history (long ago and contemporary) so we don’t continue the status quo of exclusionary, racist and elitist policies and practices clouded under the guise of democracy and meritocracy. ,#BmoreEdchat
Q6: By being direct, honest and excluding judgement. This comes naturally if YOU are knowledgable (content), comfortable (recognize and can combat your bias) on the subject, and have created an environment that allows for respectful exchanges. #BmoreEdchat
A7: We think it’s import to gather #facts thoroughly before taking a stand on issues that affect communities – so students need how to find and evaluate information accurately! (1/2) #BMoreEdChat

A7: Media literacy ed's ideals of helping all learners be critical thinkers and active citizens goes hand in hand with social justice. Teaching kids that they can be the change, and "small" action can cause a social change is the link between the two! #BmoreEdChat
A7: Media lit. that’s “Critical” goes beyond simply “critical thinking” or just incl multiple perspectives/p.o.v.; that’s when it is #SocialJusticeEducation (i.e., some p.o.v.’s are uncivil) #bmoreedchat
A7: Media literacy is how social justice can be communicated to engage the masses for change. We must explicitly model this connection for students & promote our scholars to share their stories & journeys as inspiration for all. #BmoreEdchat
@bmoreedchat A7: There’s opportunity to teach students about stories & the voices that various media represent in the stories. Social justice attempts to activate our deepest interests to find these stories compelling to act and be. The intersection is our stories #BmoreEdChat
A7: media is used to both oppress and liberate. Teach kids how to recognize this, assert their own voice, and defend the voices of others. #BmoreEdChat
A7: like most political acts, follow the power and follow the money. Who is on the editorial board, board of trustees, paid lobby, etc. teach Ss to look under the hood of media and who is benefiting from the message. #BmoreEdchat
A7 My trusted resource is @facinghistory, with their framework of teaching students to make connections between the news, the affected parties, and the power of choosing to participate. #BmoreEdChat
