#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome in to another great #worldgeochat! Tonight we are talking about getting Ss to #SpeakLikeaGeographer Who are you and where are you chatting from?
Hi #worldgeochat! Sam from MA here (or am I from the future?!) 7th grade world geography teacher! Been having a great time introducing standard of living with a future dystopian scenario
Hi, friends! Mary-Owen from Tennessee. 7th world history teacher, gold star seeker, and geography fan. Who is ready for Christmas? (I’ve not bought a single gift.) #worldgeochat
A1: Not only is it important for your specific content, but Ss link vocab to other content. Example: consumer in science is similar to consumer in economics #worldgeochat
TWITTER TWIN! YAY YAY YAY!! I've got my Christmas tree lit up, @Netflix provided fireplace, and my cozy pjs on. Can't WAIT for Christmas! #worldgeochat
A1
Ss need to know the content specific vocab so they can have a real conversation with geographers/demographer/urban planner/social scientists/etc.
We want Ss to make those real world connections! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 If Ss do not understand a term, they are not going to understand the concept. Always a believer in building vocabulary and understanding the meaning of the term.
A1 #worldgeochat learning to use geographic #vocabulary allows you to:
1. Be understood
2. Be respected in your perspectives
3. Not sound like a fool
4. Build understanding with CONTEXT!
A1 Geo-specific vocab is the vernacular of my room. There can be no "mastery" if we don't enforce the culture of the class and it starts with how we speak in the room about the subject. #worldgeochat
A1: Ss need to learn content-specific language because it's the language that true geographers use. If we want to teach real-world skills, we need to start with the language of the discipline. #worldgeochat
A1 Language is essential to knowing a discipline, culture, identity. Without language there are just individual thoughts without knowledge. I am sure there is a much better way to articulate this. #worldgeochat
A1 more vocabulary is always good for the brain, but my gut response to students would be “you look like a fool if you don’t!” Not the greatest response.... #worldgeochat

You bring up a good point, though! How is learning proper vocabulary with games and shows, like Pokemon, different than content related vocabulary? Hint: it's not haha #worldgeochat
A2: I've started incorporating a word wall. Not sure if I'm using it correctly, but it's there! I provide sentence starters, answer the question using "these" words, and provide synonyms #worldgeochat
Love hearing this. I remember reading @neiltyson just straight-up writing something like "mathematics is the language of science" once upon a time, and like the idea of similarly just owning the idea of 'geo-specific vocab'. Bathymetry4eva. #worldgeochat
A2 I will always stop to help a student understand a term, but I put a lot of work on them. They must complete one of the following each chapter. https://t.co/vxCcsJ3Fhy#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A2 Thanks to the 1-1 Chromebooks, Google Slides collaboration. Each student or students are assigned a term. Add the definition, use it in a sentence and add a picture. All Ss become responsible for the effort.

A2
I'm lucky enough to have an ELA T on my team who teaches Ss root words for LA, math, science, & SS. It's amazing how much it helps Ss at least have a clue about some terms! #worldgeochat
A2 Always looking for an intervening opportunity to use humor with geo-vocabulary. APHUG example in previous statement. Jokes do not have to be, and rarely are, funny. #worldgeochat
A2 I will always stop to help a student understand a term, but I put a lot of work on them. They must complete one of the following each chapter. https://t.co/vxCcsJ3Fhy#worldgeochat
A2: Word wall, vocabulary review (@quizizz, @GetKahoot, @goformative), 3-column notes (term, definition, drawing), Marzano technique... so many ways! Started to use @classcraftgame and award points for winners of vocab review games. #worldgeochat
A2 #worldgeochat
Vocabulary is the building blocks of debate and discourse. Options to build include:
World Wall
Question Wall
Flash debate (beginning of class)
Word Jar
Stump your parents games
paper cards -- they do 8-14 terms with def, ex and connection about 5-7 times during a 5-6 week unit. Using those cards is part of everyday instruction #worldgeochat
A2 For a hot minute I was into hashtags and would put a # in front of the vocabulary words and have Ss create a wordweb of related hashtags. Amazing how a simple # made all the difference..... #worldgeochat
Having to jump in late #worldgeochat Sorry!
A3: Boundary (geopolitical + social-emotional 😂), Culture, De facto/De jure Segregation, Ghetto (especially when misused in slang), strategic Gulf(s), which Hemisphere?
A3: Map terminology is one of the biggest terms. Globalization, sustainable development, political system vs economic system (same same but different?), culture #worldgeochat
Oooh and types of governments (empire, kingdom, oligarchy, monarchy, theocracy, democracy, dictatorship, etc) as well as economic systems (capitalism, communism, etc) #worldgeochat
A2 For a hot minute I was into hashtags and would put a # in front of the vocabulary words and have Ss create a wordweb of related hashtags. Amazing how a simple # made all the difference..... #worldgeochat
Yes there is -- density, living space and amount of individual land space is key, also # of people living in subs and driving to work in urban area #worldgeochat
A3 Perspective, diffusion, empathy, analyze, region, state, State, and correlation are a few of the words I find myself using often in class. #worldgeochat
Yup! It's such an abstract concept. There can be smaller regions within larger regions. They may not be boundaries. It's all over the place #worldgeochat
A3 con’t
There are just too many. I prefer to think in terms of tiers
T1: Location and Mapping (Where is it?)
T2: physical geography (what is it like there? Climate et al)
T3: human geography (why do people live there and how does that shape their culture?)
#worldgeochat
A4 #worldgeochat
Modeling and constant revisiting to establish how terms fit into multiple current events. Also how the terms relate to students immediate world
A4 I think vocabulary needs to be embedded into every part of the lesson. It’s not something you work and then move ahead to something else - it’s got to be seen, heard, read, spoken, written! Highlighting and making it visible throughout your room/lesson #worldgeochat
A4: Introducing @quizlet to students tomorrow. Review games, like Mystery Box (Deal or No Deal), etc. @ZahnerHistory had a great idea of creating a Google Drive folder and having Ss search for what a word or term looks like, then discuss #worldgeochat
Such a good point. I tell my Ss that dictionary definitions are useless if they don't get them. Need to put it in 7th grade friendly language! #worldgeochat
A4: Marzano's techniques work so well. It helps students slow down, put the definition in their own words, and draw an image to remind them of the meaning of the term. The last box is to add to their understanding later. They keep a notebook of their words. #worldgeochat
A4 we sometimes used a strategy where Ss had to define the term in their own words, define what the term is NOT, give an example, and draw a picture. We called it vocabulary pie since it looked like a pie graph #worldgeochat
A4: 1) Be better example 2) Make students use cardinal directions when helping with Draft in @playfanschool especially phrases like "west of Pakistan" 3) Say "Can you be more specific?" a lot! 4) Replace other generalities like "homework" with "White House Brief" #worldgeochat
A2 I started promoting the depth and complexity icon, language of the discipline, & encourage Ss to use academic vocabulary to justify their thinking. It's been a game changer. Ss think it's difficult, so they need to reframe their thinking too. #worldgeochat#KibbelsKids
Honestly check out the #SpeakLikeaGeographer hashtag. Our friends in the UK started it last Spring and they have some amazing strategies to get Ss talking!
#worldgeochat
A5: I ask them to repeat or rephrase their statement. Prompting comes in here a LOT, especially for differentiation. "I'm thinking of a word that begins with..." #worldgeochat
A4 Not taking any knowledge for granted. The most popular link in this study guide on mysterious prehistoric 'gates' was a picture-vocab link to precisely the type of gates in question. (No one else had that!) #worldgeochathttps://t.co/YeFirTubnd
I find myself asking Ss often to go back and answer again with the right vocab. "Things" and "stuff" aren't really the vocab I'm looking for. #worldgeochat
A5 every unit ended in a Socratic seminar, and Ss were expected to use vocabulary from the unit. 1 group of Ss discuss while another group listens and takes notes to give them feedback/tips (like a coach on the sidelines) #worldgeochat
Looking at the #SpeakLikeaGeographer hashtag, I realize I want this in my room. Bulletin boards that offer sentence starts and vocab. This will go up somewhere in my room #worldgeochat
A5: By using academic vocabulary (geography terms) in the question/verbal prompt; modeling; lots of informal practice using the terms so that use of it in discussion becomes natural. #worldgeochat
A5 #worldgeochat
Allowing time to think and ask questions. Learning how to ask questions with vocabulary is just as important as answering questions with proper vocabulary usage
We must include demographics--race, socioeconomics--and the attitudes that surround them--from this distinction. "Urban" has a connotation that can't be ignored. #worldgeochat

A5: "Discourse" is a rubric category in our department. Ss receive feedback on use of the language of the discipline in every SS class in our HS. Common rubrics are my only favorite aspect of common assessments. #worldgeochat I rebel against the rest.
A6 It is at the core of what we do in APHuGs, but there is no simple answer. LOTS of practice prompts, written responses, modeling, exemplars, non-examples. I really pump the brakes on lessons to hammer this point home. #worldgeochat
A6
In writing "Content Specific Vocabulary" is a section on the rubric. I use the the example of a meteorologist - the good ones don't just say hot/cold/rainy/snowy - they use precipitation/high pressure systems etc. #worldgeochat
A4 Not taking any knowledge for granted. The most popular link in this study guide on mysterious prehistoric 'gates' was a picture-vocab link to precisely the type of gates in question. (No one else had that!) #worldgeochathttps://t.co/kvTWDvkQ8x
RT TeacherRunner42: a4: the best way to teach vocab is to integrate it into all the subjects - lat & long? x & y axis. economics? + and - integers #worldgeochat
RT storiestoldinsf: A5: By using academic vocabulary (geography terms) in the question/verbal prompt; modeling; lots of informal practice using the terms so that use of it in discussion becomes natural. #worldgeochat
Starts with adults getting in the habit of treating them as the learning tool they are, not defaulting to telling kids to hide them away. #digcit#worldgeochat
A6: Could scaffold with sentence frames that incorporate the target vocabulary and eventually decrease the supports until the terms are used independently@ #worldgeochat
A6: @GeoSpeakNation does a cool twitter activity having students hashtag and define a term + include a relevant news article about it in their share! 😍 💪 #worldgeochat
A5/6
There are certain terms that show up again and again
Culture/agriculture/irrigation etc. I include them in every unit and quiz over them, have ss demonstrate how the terms apply in different contexts #worldgeochat
A7: I used to love @Flocabulary to introduce into the classroom. Haven't been able to pay for it. I'm definitely taking @ZahnerHistory's idea of asking students to include words from the word wall to answer a question as a warm up #worldgeochat
A7a
Honestly, our missing #worldgeochat moderator is my go to on all things vocabulary. His post from over the summer was one of my favorites!
https://t.co/hivnAlf5c9
A7: I you haven't tried Quizlet Live, it's a must. Try it. watch the students work. It's genius. ... I want to try the new diagram tool on @quizlet#worldgeochat
A6: @GeoSpeakNation does a cool twitter activity having students hashtag and define a term + include a relevant news article about it in their share! 😍 💪 #worldgeochat
Great chat everyone! Thanks again to our awesome mods for the work they do to make this the best damn PLN out there! And thanks for the Gold Star!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #worldgeochat
