Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.

Good morning! Middle school AP in Liberal, KS. What brought me here? This will be my first year in an admin role so I’m looking to get some insight about balance b/c I know how important it is to the personal and professional life. #LeadLAP
Good morning y’all. Elyse from North Texas. Special educator & looking to balance a little more this coming school year between all the demands. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
Thanks Jess. I will probably be leaving a little early. Have an out later this afternoon and we are car pooling. Taking @BalanceLap with me to finish ready section 3. #leadlap
Good Morning. Andrea joining in from WI. Book is on it's way. Looking forward to learning more about balancing leadership in work and play. It's safe to say I haven't arrived yet. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP

A1: My tells come from my body. Sluggish, cannot sleep well, weak feeling. My kids will point it out too because I struggle with focus. Feelings of not being enough. Anywhere. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1: I'm spending more time up late trying to get work done or having some quiet time. Someone says one thing and I immediately drop everything and the person then goes: "I didn't mean this second." #leadlap#BalanceLAP
A1: Actually, I'm usually pretty much casual so when kids or my teachers notice I'm a little more wound up than usual, that when I realize it's time to fix myself and get over myself and my issues #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1: My "tells" for being out of balance include a lot of internal physical symptoms, bc I try to mask my stress w/ a smile and positivity. Also-my family tells me when they notice I need to go for a run! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Good morning! Rena Hawkins here-Elementary principal @MapleWarriors! Completed first week back & already shift to “school mind” is taking over! Still making time for fun, but skipping workouts, less cooking and house is neglected! #LeadLAP#ShareMOEdu#LipSyncChallenge
A1: Don't know where to begin on task list. Mind is cluttered. Overwhelmed and anxiety sets in. Other people might notice that I get quiet. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Top of our Saturday morning balance, #leadlap crew, from Barbara, veteran school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape?
A book's birth-day is SUPER exciting big BIG news. Congrats! #BalanceLAP
A1: I know I’m out of balance when my sleep patterns are off (always tired & not enough sleep), I experience significant weight gain/loss or when I’m disconnected from my family & myself! Time alone & with family/friends help me regain balance! #LeadLAP
A1: Whew. I know this because it's why #VBHasJoy🌻exists: Signs of being out of balance⚖️: disengagement, lack of #joy, fatigue that won't go away with sleep, lack of creativity #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A1. Do I have to answer this? 😊 I think the biggest sign is when needs in either home life or professional life go unattended. Have to keep peeking into both to stay effective, I guess. #leadlap
A1) I'm less patient, both at home with my family & with staff. Also, when I don't remember the last time I LAUGHED, I know I'm out of balance! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1: Not making time to workout. Leaving school and coming home to do more school. Not meal prepping and choosing unhealthy options. Messy 🏠 Not sleeping b/c mind won’t shut off! #LeadLAP
A1 I know I'm out of balance when I'm exhausted and definitely when my kids are yelling at me that I'm never home, which is rare but just happened this morning. #leadlap
A1: I know it’s time for a little recalibration when I begin to loose things. I tend to “leave a trail of remnants” my coffe cup, keys, when I’m overwhelmed #LeadLAP
A1: When I'm out of balance, I stop taking my power walks, I don't sleep as well, and I'm not a joyful. The tells are pretty obvious, actually; I just need to make sure to take action before #compassion fatigue threatens. #leadlap#balancelap
A1: like @posickj usually pretty positive, high energy, enthusiasm, etc. When I’m short on patience with things I should be patient with, I know I need to make some adjustments. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1- my energy and spunk go down the toilet. My drive becomes non existent. Basically I burn myself out. I’m working really hard to find a balance. #LeadLAP
A1: For me, the indicator is usually when I notice that I'm becoming short-tempered with students & staff. A key moment to stop, reflect, and assess. #LeadLap#BalanceLap
We are all on that journey, Andrea. You are rocking it. Plus, we can always fall out of balance with any transition, so we can help one another! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1. Dishes piling up in the sink for more than a day is my canary in the coal mine. If I haven’t had time to wash dishes (we don’t own a dishwasher), it usually means that I simply haven’t had 20 minutes to catch my breath. #LeadLAP
A1. I tend to put off a frantic energy that screams "Im busy so don't bother me" I hate it when I project that vibe. Big goal for me this year to improve. #LeadLAP
I answered question one, but I didn't introduce myself. Jay, principal from Merton, WI, trying to balance the day with family and friends after learning with my PLN this morning. #LeadLAP
A1 Joining in a little late.. Hi I'm Elizabeth a librarian. Think my signs of being out of balance tend to be me questioning more my decisions. Some that I would not think twice about suddenly become a problem #LeadLAP
That is one thing I try to make a priority! I try to get my workout in at least 3X weekly and maybe a walk on the days I don't workout! Keeps my sanity! Love those endorphins! #LeadLAP
Hey Kelli! Thanks for joining #LeadLAP, and that makes a lot of sense to me. We need to fill back up when we are depleted. It sounds like those piece bring you joy! Me too! :) #LeadLAP
I jumped in late...Barb Casey, here because the title alone speaks to me. I feel so balanced after a few weeks off & want strategies to keep that balance when I head back to work! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A1 It's strange bc I can take a lot but when I do get off-balance--I am WAY off balance. Everything seems to be against me, and the "woe is me" attitude takes over. Usually lots of tears & deep thinking, etc. I can tell it's time to refocus, though. #leadlap#BalanceLap
A2: My quadrants are blending really well right now! However, my mental energy is focused a lot on positional as I grow a new space for myself without a formal building role. With that comes a ton of professional learning, and I AM LOVING IT! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
I am seeing a lot of points about being easily frustrated and letting little things get to us. That makes sense, and a great reason why we should focus. Emotional reliability is so key in our profession. Thanks #LeadLAP crew!
I'm doing great during the summer with the extra time. Need to make it a non-negotiable routine and make it happen! I always feel so much better! #LeadLAP
A2: My career and my passions are one in the same, which is helpful :) I am working on letting work go, putting the phone away, and focusing on my loved ones when we have time together. Makes life richer all around. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: I have spent a lot of the summer in personal, professional and passions, but it's just about time to dive in deep to positional to get everything ready for the start of the year! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: At the moment, my professional and Personal passions are intermixed. I am all about getting it done well at work and I love what I do so it's easy to do it #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2 Professional right now! I have the time to do the PD I choose! I have the time and freedom during the summer. Just need to turn it off when my husband is at home! Learning is my passion! #LeadLAP
A2 Professional but as that is also my passion it is hopefully understandable. My personal life is due to go through major transition in October with our youngest heading to uni so think I am trying to ignore the looming empty nest at the moment. #leadlap
A2: Professional has been dominating my world lately, followed by my own school work, leaving little for personal life. Passions? Hmmm. #LeadLAP#balanceLAP
A2: At this point of the summer, definitely professional. Trying to figure out staffing gaps right now and interviewing has consumed most of my day. Learning to NOT get back on my laptop in the evenings has been a struggle. #balancelap#leadlap
A2: I would say professional, right now as I’m transitioning into my new role. My first day as admin starts Monday, so after this chat I’m going to intentionally get some R&R the rest of today! #LeadLAP
A2: My 4 quads (personal, professional, positional, & passions) are intertwined. I try hard not to compartmentalize -- this is where BALANCE comes in. All parts pour into my purpose as an individual. #LeadLAP
A2: Passion for #character development is driving me right now. As my encore career quickly unfolds before my eyes, more opps to carry the #SEL baton are coming my way. Podcasts, blog posts, learning sessions, keynotes; SO energizing! #leadlap#balancelap
#LeadLAP A2: Unfortunately, I believe that I am at a positional focus at the moment. But I know that having that focus has roots in bringing better balance to family and work in the near future.
A2 Right now, my passions and my personal life are what drive the balance thus far. Soon I’ll add positional and more duties but my career and my passions align with how I live day to Day. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A2: Actually, I think I've really mixed them all together. Personal, Professional, Positional are mixed. I know I need more outside of work to be passionate about, and that will come but right now... today... It's all of them mixed #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2. Honestly, I’m dancing back and forth. A little here. A little there. Podcasts while cleaning. Reading on road trips. Sketching during morning coffee. ⚖️? #LEADlap
A2 I would say I'm most immersed in professional and personal (which definitely includes what I'm most passionate about!) but feel I need to spend even more time being better in my personal life. #leadlap
A2: I’m guilty of trying to balance it all! 😱 I was able to take vacation and balance the most important- and delete what didn’t matter, or what I didn’t NEED at this time. Normally, I’m heavily immersed in professional 75%. #LeadLap#BalanceLAP
A2: This is why I love this book #BalanceLAP- you're so right ladies-A beautiful balance for me right now is immersion in my passion to cultivate #Joy in leadership; in fact my passion for #JOY keeps me on track for my #selfcare⚖️#LeadLAP#EducatorWellBeing
A2: For the summer I'm in mommy mode so personal takes the lead on most days, yet the #4OCFPLN pushes me to keep my professional side going strong. My only unbalance this summer comes with also managing the Masters degree I started in June!
#LeadLAP
A1. Summer gives plenty of time for necessary & life-giving home stuff. We’re painting the living room, buying new couches & curtains, and redecorating our entire house. Feels GREAT to build up positive energy as “money in the bank” to power through the school year! #leadLAP
Hey #LeadLAP folks! Joining late because sometimes I’m not #BalancedLAP! I’m hanging at se championships and now that my daughter is at warmups, I have some time to breathe!
Constant struggle!!! Right now I’m working to prioritize my personal life. It’s hard because I want to immerse myself in my professional. Last year was a doozie and I’m really for a fresh start. BUT last year was hard because I didn’t prioritize my personal life at all #leadlap
A2 Most immersed in professional and passion (which are the same)! I love them and could do it all day every day. However, I love my family, too. 😜 Def need to work toward balancing in personal. Positional? Idk. #leadlap#BalanceLap
A3: My self-care comes from morning habits, which align closely with #TheMiracleMorning. Devotional before ever looking at my phone, run, and journal. If I can't run in the morning, it happens at night. Day 1471 was gorgeous this morning! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2- It seems my professional life has taking over my personal life. I rarely seem to take time to enjoy the things I personally enjoy the most. #balancelap#LeadLAP
Rachel from Central Texas. Balance is my goal this year after of a hectic year of opening a new school with kids and Staff from across the district. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: Professional gets the largest chunk w/a lot of summer projects for work and my own coursework. Three more grad school classes to go! Personal: I have made a commitment to not let anything get in the way of my running. A shift in priorities has helped. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Completely agree, Doug! That is one of our assertions and why we do not believe it can be thought of as 50/50 or percentages or time. Thanks for pointing that out. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: There is so much overlap in those quadrants for me. My students and lifelong learning are my personal passions. Immersing in #DBC50Summer has been my primary focus, but I try not to work on it until my kids are in bed. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: It’s taken me most of my adult life, but I can honestly admit I have become better at finding balance across personal, professional, positional & passions in my life. In the summer, I’m more immersed in my passions and personal life...pace is slower! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2) personal because I'm off this month & my kids & teacher husband are home. Also working on some health goals. Not neglecting the job, still making phone calls, answering emails, prof rdg. But to bal the summer, this is how I roll in this present moment! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Q2: I have been working hard on my Master's degree. I have reached a point where I am forced to take a small break. This will help me work on my personal life since it's still summer here. #LeadLAP
A2) Right now I'm in the middle of a two week vacation (personal), getting to explore a passion (cooking), while engaging in some professional work (Twitter, Voxer and reading). #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Q3- I have been exercising every day and I’m eating healthy. Cutting out the junk. When I eat a lot of junk I can concentrate, I get moody, and I can’t sleep. #leadlap
A3 I am trying to switch off the technology an hour before bed. Try to practice what I preach. Giving myself some headspace for me is me looking after myself #leadlap
I'm immersed in personal and professional at this moment. It's summer and I'm focusing on family, but also gearing up for the next school year! I think that passion drives everything. #leadlap
A2: I am more immersed in my passions at work right now! It is an exciting time to build culture as we open @MapleWarriors with new grade levels, staff & students. Working on theme, designing T-shirts, welcome back letters, S placement, staff relationships! Love it all! #LeadLAP
A2. I would say I have a big focus on passion @dbc_inc books, which ultimately impact my profession. My personal life has way more balance right now too between working out and time with family and friends. Love getting re-energized in the summer. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: Glad to here you debunk the 50/50 concept. I spent years feeling like a balance failure because I’m never 50/50 I’m always 100% which includes being immersed in my Professional, Personal and Spiritual life. #leadlap
A2: I have to say professional. Going through job lost twice in two years. I'm into nailing being a better professional. Trying to stop comparing myself to others and be my own person. #BalanceLAP
A3: I started an easy 5 minute morning yoga routine last year to combat my unbalance. It was simple yet my students and I noticed a difference! #LeadLAP
A2 personal, professional, passions currently, but during the school year it’s positional & professional. Over the years I have gotten better at leaving my work at school some days but it’s hard! There’s always something #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A3 I run every day, but sometimes I need to take the dog for a walk, watch a movie with my family, play a round of golf (poorly), read, or go fishing. Having a variety of self-care options keeps me more in balance. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: In all honesty, it's never been a priority. I'm realizing that the longer I'm in education, the more I simply can't neglect my own sanity. My cup has to be filled too in order for me to pour out into the lives of my students. #leadlap#balancelap
A3: Get plenty of sleep, know when to "turn it off" if even for a few hours through dinner or family time; being aware of my life balance; and the one thing I have been missing but truly need is more exercise #LeadLAP
A3: Routines help. Get up. Drink Coffee. Go to gym. Shower. More coffee. Go to work. It's now 6:30 AM. Read Paper. Do Crossword puzzle. Get after it! #LEadlap#BalanceLAP
A1: I know I’m not in a good place when I start focusing on all the wrong things, the things that don’t matter and I start doing them without thinking. I also get hungry. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: Waking up early and having time to myself, reading a good book, an early morning swim in the ocean, a good massage or pedicure, time immerssed w/family and friiends #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: I make sure I spend my morning time reading the Bible and in prayer before my day gets too hectic. I try not to check emails or respond to texts before I do that. #LeadLAP
A3: Listening to music is my outlet. Anytime I'm feeling the stress, I put on my favorite songs and dance it out. I don't do podcasts, Voxer, voice-typing notes, etc. That's my time for music and a little car dance! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: Being intentional with my time this summer working on my personal/passions by running, taking photos, hiking/camping with my husband and dogs, playing the ukelele! Professionally I'm super engaged in learning with my #40cfpln and working to gamify my classroom! #leadlap
A2: I'm immersed in personal and professional at this moment. It's summer and I'm focusing on family, but also gearing up for the next school year! I think that passion drives everything. #leadlap
A3: Have made a commitment to myself to schedule my runs. This was much easier when I was training to run a half because the plan was written out for me. Must get back to a routine! Routines are key...I'm off balance which means I'm not in a good routine. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A3. This has been my biggest help! I don’t exercise much (goal), but a year and half ago I changed my diet and it changed my Life!!! Thank you @DrGundry ❤️ #BalanceLAP#LeadlAP
A2: Currently, I’ve been extremely immersed in my professional and personal life. I’ve been participating in a lot of PD to get ready for the school year, and I’ve been making time for family fun. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A3) Meal plan/prep, get up & get exercise done early (thx @mradamwelcome for instilling my no excuses mindset!), recognize the list of to dos won't go away just because I put in 18 hour day @ work, date nights with hubby, & keep Learning! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Passions are interesting when we consider that so much of what we do as educators are tied to our passions. Except when they aren't and then we go so long without them, we don't remember them anymore. #LeadLAP
A3- downtime on the weekends and a little family time during the week... need time to recharge to give all I've got to kids/staff during the week. Give yourself permission #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: Thinking beyond running that I need to schedule other types of activities for a "work break" ex. reading, movie releases, etc. Also must get into a routine of meal prep. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: I am working through #80DayObsession right now and really working on eating whole, healthy foods! Feeling good. I just need to keep it up during the school year! #LeadLAP Trip to beach is upcoming!! Hoping to connect with @daveschmittou@bmilla84@GuysBride❤️❤️❤️
A3 This summer has allowed me to refuel. During the school year, I enjoy walking, iced coffee before students arrive, and enjoying the little things to allow me to advocate and work with others. #balancelap#LeadLAP
A3: Tough question.... Unfortunately it's the other way around. Others take care of me! My husband, family, friends and colleagues charge my battery so I can return the favor. #leadlap
Q3: Drink more water! I start the day getting hydrated.
Also, I've been working out more and getting outside in the garden. Spending time in the soil soothes the soul. #LeadLAP
Q3: I sing 🎶. I play my flute and most importantly I hug my grandson I’ll have two arm fills soon as my granddaughter will be arriving any day now❤️#LeadLAP
A3: I make sure that I am meeting my own needs for fun, freedom, power, belonging, and survival. If I am living my best, most effective life, then I can be the support I want to be for others. They deserve it, and I deserve it. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A3: I love to knit to unwind. Making these preemie caps is SO therapeutic, carving out time to BE in the moment and just relax and reflect. Donating them to babies in developing countries is a self-care bonus b/c it feeds my helper's high. #LeadLAP#balanceLAP
A3: One way I prioritize taking care of myself...daily workout and distance running every other day...helps keep me focused, grateful, passionate about my work, and excited to be alive! 😊 #LeadLAP
A3) Eat well, sleep well, get body moving, connect with family and friends, get into the kitchen, take surprise field trips with my husband! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4: Currently and usually my daughters! We are about to spend a few days in MN with my family, and spending time with friends. Friends and extended family are always the space I wish I spent more personal time. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
My struggle is that I attempt to start a routine, then I end up staying up late working on projects for work and realize the snooze button appears more appealing. I definitely need work in this area. I've seen the benefits and I know they pay off. #leadlap#balancelap
A3a: I will joyfully answer this one in a few tweets. First, you practice #selfcare & ⚖️professionally w/ these chats. Intentionally put them on your calendar-prioritize what you value...guess what? I love me so I know what's good for my soul. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP#VBHasJoy
A3: A trip to Ocracoke Island! Also, listening to music & watching movies. I know I need to go to the gym (@melrobbins is helping me on this...). But I love to discover new music and step inside a new while with the music. #LeadLap#BalanceLap
#LeadLAP
Alright y'all I have to get to my balance! Lots to get done on a Saturday. Be well and can't wait to catch up with you all again soon. Be sure to sign up for #HiveSummit and VA/NC be on the look out folks for the SouthsideVAEdcamp-more info coming soon! @ssvaedcamp
A2- just returned from Aruba with the family for some personal R & R, diving in to the professional to prep for BTS, and fitting in some passion to scrapbook my trip! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3 I make it a priority to go to the gym at least 3 times per week.
Run a few miles and work out with weights. It clears my mind, and I actually love my time. Well...and I love flexing. Plus, my bicep is getting pretty buff. 💪🏼😜
Just sayin...
#leadlap#BalanceLap
A2: When I can remind myself of my passion and purpose in each area of my life, I’m able to refocus on what matters in that moment. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: I take care of myself by trying to live in gratitude. When I take time to notice all of my blessings, appreciate them & surround myself in them, then my spirit is calmed and stress can't take over. #LeadLap#BalanceLAP
A3. As an administrator Unplugging in the evening has been huge. No more late night emails for me. recognizing that my life outside of school deserved uninterrupted attention resulted in better sleep and less stress #LeadLAP
A3 I started taking spin classes this summer & love it! My goal is to take at least 2 classes a week during school. Plus I walk my dog daily & listen to audiobooks on my commute #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A2. I am transitioning back on contract, reluctantly leaving lazy days with Little boys at home, while simultaneously getting excited about what great things we can do this year. Excellent PD right before returning to work is exactly what I needed! #LeadLAP#balanceLAP
A4: I spend time with the family more. I do however wish I could find a better way to more fun things without worrying about consequences from budget to too much time spent on one things. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4 Trying to spend more time with my husband, going on long walks, talking and taking time for each other. Listening to my son when he wants to talk even if I am in the middle of something. He is not going to be here for long. I want to do some painting this summer! #leadlap
A3: Yesterday I went to the beach and then I had sushi. I rarely spend alone time and I enjoyed it. I felt totally refreshed when my kids came home from summer camp #leadLAP
A4: I am prioritizing spending time with each of my kids. We have four and are very busy, but even if I just take 2 at a time, I get to spend more time with them. Our oldest will be a sophomore, so the clock is ticking. #LeadLAP
A3- This is an area where I am an Epic Failure. Between family and work life I seem to never take any time for myself.... example-When you consider attending the NAESP conference as a summer vacation, definitely out of balance #leadlap#BalanceLAP
A4- spend more time traveling with my family. We LOVE to travel and see new places. We are already planning a trip to Comic Connie San Diego for next year. I love that my family has the same interests. #leadlap
A4: I think after working with staff & students on their goals, it's beneficial that the leadership team also does the same. We're working on personal and professional goals this year. This should help with balance. #leadlap#balancelap
A4. Creativity. Positivity. Focus on planning my time. Creativity. Positivity. Eat well. Treat myself...WELL! Better for all I love and care for. 😊 #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A3 Hot Yoga saves me. I have never been so committed to something that is all about making me better physically and mentally. With yoga, I am more relaxed, which is exactly what I need:) #leadlap
I opened my boxed lunch at @ncties Board Meeting on Thursday and there, in all its glory, was a bag of original Doritos... they. were. heavenly. Not had Doritos in *SO* long! Forgot how much I loved them! #LeadLAP
In reply to
@SarahSajohnson, @staci_erickson2, @ncties
A3b: #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP#EducatorWellBeing Self-care and balance is an intentional relationship with your journey-everyday do something to renew, refresh & reflect...this is a formula for your #JOY#VBHasJOY
A4: Reading, relaxing, time with family, exercise, being proactive to be successful with weekly healthy living goals, remembering to smile and laugh!! #LeadLAP
A4: I will be at my kids events. I only get to experience their childhood once. I will run and get in the word. I’m a better person when I do. I will consistently date my wife. She’s my most important relationship and best friend. #balancelap#LeadLAP
A4: It's all about time with my family; my kids are 16 & 19, so when they are around we plan for family dinners, movie or game night, walks in our state park (which is right down the street!); love having my daughter home from college! Date night too! #LeadLAP
A4: I honestly need to work on being present with my husband and two dogs in the evenings when I come home from work and I have to commit to an exercise routine and stick to it. #leadlap
A5: Singing/performing, writing, reading. I sing anywhere and at any time, but formally, I am seeking spaces for performance again after a LONG break. I write and read daily. That happens in my morning routine or at night before bed. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4) My kids are young. So I prioritize them over other personal space areas because they naturally demand it, lol! It can interfere with my health focus at times so I am working on ways to incorporate them into my workout/health time. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A3: Putting in my ear buds and going for a walk with the dog, clears my mind and re-energizes me. Maybe we need a dog at school? Or maybe I just need to get up and move more? #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5: My personal passions are tied to my professional passions. Fitness and exercise always find a place. Then reading and learning. They are intertwined. #LeadLAP
A4 this year my wife decided we should skip vacations and birthdays and gifts and get a hot tub. Not gonna lie it has been great for decompressing at the end of a long day. #worthit#LeadLap
A3 I run every day, but sometimes I need to take the dog for a walk, watch a movie with my family, play a round of golf (poorly), read, or go fishing. Having a variety of self-care options keeps me more in balance. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4: My family (includes blood and chosen) is my priority. However, I wish I spent more time with my parents (my mom, dad, stepmom & aunt) & my brothers. This question tugs at my heart. #LeadLAP
A5: The only time to fit "me time" in for my personal quadrant is early in the morning before anyone else in my family is up. If it doesn't happen in the morning, it doesn't happen. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
I'm not sure what A to put with this, but I'm committed to giving myself a break when I'm not balanced or if my balance isn't the same as others. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5 Reading, learning, blogging are the things that I love and make time for. Usually when my boys are watching or playing cricket :) I want to love painting but get so frustrated with my rubbishness (i know that is not a word) that I spoil it for myself - stupid I know! #leadlap
A5 Reading! Cooking, old movies, walks, Twitter chats, and Voxer chats with my PLN! I read when I can during lunch, at dr. offices, waiting in line, etc. Weekends and weeknights for my chats and Voxer during my drives and walks. #LeadLAP
YES! Servant leadership is beautiful until our wells run dry. So glad you are seeing this. Self-care can run counter to what we think is best, but when we run out, that's way worse. Thanks Andrew! #LeadLAP
A5- Reading and Scrapbooking- I read when I can but I plan two scrapbook weekends away during the year with girlfriends to make the time! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5: I've taken up drawing and a little bit of painting. I stay committed because I take classes with my daughter. Such a great thing to do together, and I love using my mind in a different way. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4. My wife & I just celebrated our five year anniversary! A week in Cancún and then a performance of @HamiltonMusical win her folks who are celebrating their 40th. We’re both teachers who make a conscious effort to makng memories, not buying things. Really helps! #LeadLAP
A4- I would love to get back to my roots and start spending more time in nature, unplugged from the world and relaxing. We all need to reenergize throughout the year to be the best we can at our jobs. #leadlap#BalanceLAP
A5: Personal passions may be where I'm most off-balance. I do not make time for them during the school year. The summer is the only uninterrupted time I can focus on personal passions. #LeadLAP The struggle is real. Taking suggestions and advice.
A4 I need to prioritize personal relationships more. I get so focused on my work life that I forget how a phone call to my mom or meeting up with a friend makes everything better. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
Triathlon, designing professional development, and writing. Triathlon—wake up about 3:45-4AM during the school year to get the training in...PD & writing—as I am inspired but at least set aside time to write once a week.
A5 I love Red Dirt music so I make time to listen to it if I need. Break to refocus, I also enjoy sitting on my back patio. With the fire table on at night #LeadLap
A4: Thanks to a suggestion from @thezenteacher in a Voxer book study, I make it a point to schedule ME time... even if it is 15-20 minutes... It's MY time!! #LeadLAP
A5: Constantly bettering myself is one of my personal passions - #DBC50Summer has MORE THAN scratched that itch this summer. It's been an incredible journey so far! #LeadLAP#growthmindset
A4: I want to show the people in my personal life how much they matter. I #CelebratED my work family a lot, but need to champion my real family just as much. Love them and should tell them that more. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5- I love being out doors. I love wake boarding, snow skiing, hiking, running. Anything. But guess how much I have done in the last few year? Not a lot... at all. We are going to change that! It helps me stay centered. #LeadLAP
A5 Reading for sure, both prof & #read4fun. Cooking, spending time w/ family & friends. I need a schedule & to-do lists to help me prioritize. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5: Personal passions may be where I'm most off-balance. I do not make time for them during the school year. #LeadLAP The struggle is real. Taking suggestions and advice.
A2: As a mom, I am into Momming right now (personal) and professional is so important to me that I feel like I'm on a teeter totter at times! #leadlap#balancelap
A5: Writing, reading and traveling- I noticed that the majority of my books are professional so it's time for me to chill with a good novel or something #leadLAP
I am just in that transition Jay and it is hard to have them not need me so much. Have to get intentional about spending more time with them doing things they enjoy, which is fun! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Q4: I wish I spent more time focusing on health and self-care, as well as time away with my husband and kids. I work to do this but could always do more! #leadlap
A6: I am always reading to grow professionally--I have stacks of books/journals that I'm constantly in and out of! And of course, my PLN on Twitter/Voxer!
#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A4: Where am I prioritizing, personally? Spending more quality time with my wife, as our two children have now moved out and have started their careers (one doing grad work). We just spent two wonderful weeks in Newfoundland! #LeadLAP#BalanceLap
A5: My passion is people. Spending time with those I love sharing life and our journey. Outside of my FT work, I also write, run my own sewing business, draw, read. Time is tricky minx but somehow it works but is reason for my A4. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6: Professional focus is tied to my next leadership chapter. I am also working on more writing projects, and working to expand my reach for this #BalanceLAP message. I calendar time, which is a unique challenge without a formal position and children on summer break. #LeadLAP
A6 Raising the profile of school libraries is my professional focus at the moment. Helping teachers to understand the importance of working with a qualified librarian through advocacy, blogging and joining in twitter chats :) #leadlap
A6: Luckily #DBC50Summer is also growing me professionally! I make time when my daughters are playing in their playroom or when they are sleeping. When we visit family, I use the time in the car to read, then blog late at night. #LeadLAP
I pray in the car every morning on my way to work. I sing in a choir and I treat that commitment the same as any professional responsibility no matter how tired i am. Both of these practices fill me up. #LeadLAP
A6- this year my professional focus is on being a Pathfinder and coaching my teachers... encouraging and modeling risk taking in their lessons... becoming a Pirate staff! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6 Literacy is my main focus, but I am always looking for tech tools to help me with my teaching! So I challenge myself (My #4OCFPLN does too) to learn and try new things, like making a meme! It's on my list! #LeadLAP
A6: I'm sharing this with you #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP in part to ensure you check on my progress😘-writing. I want to focus on writing-it's important & I seek to carve out time to accomplish it.
And I definitely plan nights out with the girls #priority Many of my friends are not educators so that forces me to unplug and talk about other things...are there other things? LOL! #LeadLAP
A6: Connecting with others (Ts and Ss) is a big professional focus of mine (bc I know the power it holds!) I do this by taking opportunities: passing time, attending events, getting in classrooms— basically just by being visible and available. #LeadLAP
SAME. So much SAME. You are in my DNA...my future ancestors will always carry a piece of you through what I've learned and shared in this life with you. This is the impact of all meaningful relationships. #LeadLAP
Q6: Professional focus areas include focus on culture, data w/new grade levels and Ss, empowering others to lead with their strengths. Build it into PD goals, present learning at conferences, be open to new learning, connect & READ!! #LeadLAP
A5: I don’t know why I forgot this about myself, but being creative is a passion. Creating things - whether it’s music or art or writing or thinking of new ways to do things - energizes me. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6: Luckily #DBC50Summer is also growing me professionally! I make time when my daughters are playing in their playroom or when they are sleeping. When we visit family, I use the time in the car to read, then blog late at night. #LeadLAP
A6. I find time for professional focus during tasks like cleaning- Podcasts, using voice features on phone to “read” blogs. Not joining ALL the chats but making time for some. #BalanceLAP#LEadLAP
A6 professional focus areas are school culture and development as well as curriculum design. I try to set aside time each week by marking it on my calendar each week devoting time to research, collaboration and planning #LeadLap
A6 Working on refining my practice in standards based learning for sure. Keeping current on engagement strategies for Ss. Twitter chats, prof books & colleagues are my go to resources. #LeadLap#BalanceLAP
A5: Photography! I'm usually the unofficial photographer at events with friends or during/at school events. I have a special folder shared with yearbook students/staff too. It gives me a chance to help out and engage in a passion of mine! #leadlap
Great space to start Debbie! Being present is the best gift we can give our loved ones. I am always working on that. Thanks for sharing. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A6. Plot twist! Long car rides (in DC traffic) are the PERFECT time to listen to educational podcasts like #WellPlayed and #ProfessorGame, or “read” entire books about teaching on @audible_com. By the time I get to school, I’ve got a million new ideas ready to go. #LeadLAP
A4: I'm mindfully continuing to stay connected with people I tag on a regular basis-they are my source of professional & personal #Joy. They know who they are😘...one of them is my son Ethan; he's a gift🎁so I make sure I'm fully present with him. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A6: Finishing up coursework for admin + C&I license. Love to read professional books, blog, and participate in Twitter chats. All have been reduced as a result of my coursework. I haven't found a way to do it all. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
I may be an exception but NO work emails on my phone.... those can wait for work hours... unplugging from FB/Twitter that's another story but not during family time at night... #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6: Growing with grace is my professional focus this year. Reading (constantly), voxing, tweeting, trainings, experiencing all feed into my mustard seed of growth. #LeadLAP
A6: I generally have a few things I am focusing on professionally. One way I make time is during my commute...podcasts & voxer...my radio is NEVER on anymore! #LeadLAP#4OCFPLN
Thank you so much! It has been an INCREDIBLE journey so far - stretched my thinking more than I ever anticipated. #LeadLAP is only a few books away (SOOOOO excited!!!) #DBC50Summer
A6: My professional focus is on transformational leadership & continuous organizational improvement in our schools. One of my colleagues @iStockTeach helps me to prioritize by asking if a task fits in our “learning by design” plan that guides all of our work. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5: I haven't really made time for my passions lately. I think my passion is math. I was incorporating it into my Master's (and won an Excellence Award doing so), but I went in a different direction because I thought of other's impressions. hmmm. #leadLAP
A6: I am starting a new job, so I am spending time learning about the CTE world and the different needs of building. I am starting to actually use my calendar to allocate time better. #leadlap
A6: If it’s not on my calendar, it’s not going to happen, so I think I’m going to need to block off time to read and think and be creative. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6: I am learning to be the best I can be when it comes to serving as a Kindergarten teacher (after 28 years...16 at district leader level......year 1 in K done...year 2 on its way...2 years until retirement). #LeadLAP
A6: We are starting a new system of SEL supports for Ss next year, and we are continuing our work to help Ss set their own learning goals in reading. A culture of JOY for Ss and Ts is a continuous priority. We like to have fun! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A456: I have to finish the books that I have started professionally. I have a lot of bookmarks. Once I get started, my mind wonders away to my personal/passion of building relationships and talking to my people! #leadlap
A5: I love talking to veteran leaders about their experiences to gain wisdom & perspective. I started the #AspireLead podcast & work on it after my kids go to bed. It’s been so fun! #LeadLAP#BalanceLap
Food for thought: #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP#EducatorWellBeing My balance⚖️is nourished daily with my joy in all four quadrants: personal, professional, positional, & passions...know your joy & the balance will follow.
Or maybe I need to take a different perspective and instead of look at the big pile of books that's waiting for me, that I instead look at it in more manageable bite-sized chunks. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
I'm focusing on growing as a whole teacher. I've tried to actually go to professional development that will challenge and change me like @getyourteachon and @ronclarkacademy and it has SOOO been worth it! #leadlap#balancelap A Big Thank you to @DonorsChoose!

@BalanceLap, @getyourteachon, @ronclarkacademy, @DonorsChoose
A6 Twitter & Twitter chats are awesome to grow my #PLN & get great ideas. Always looking for engagement strategies & new tech tips. Summer is a great time to read all of the pd books! Currently reading #teachLAP & love it #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
How exciting for you! Yes I agree that I have to say that I am proud that all my other three have left home and got jobs and found partners and are settling down. Means I did do a good job :) Fingers crossed for the last one... #leadlap
In #TWOTCW, @SteveWyborney talks about reflective writing & what a powerful practice it is. Focusing on writing has changing my career this summer. Looking forward to seeing it change my Ss lives & my coaching practices this fall! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP

Q6: My Master's degree is my professional focus area. I am LOVING WGU because I can work on it whenever and I can accelerate. I wake up early and find time when family is busy doing their own things. I'm almost done and I only started in November. #LeadLAP
A6: My main focus area is continual growth through my experience w others. I make time to listen to others with my heart. This has allowed me to see others and appreciate their journey. This changes our collective work for the better. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Read whatever speaks to you currently. I started a book a year ago and am now just picking it back up bc it is more applicable and relevant to the season that I am in. In that way, the wisdom between the pages holds more meaning. #LeadLAP
I'm glad to hear this isn't just me! I have different types of books started: culture, coaching, managing change, personal growth, design thinking, personalized learning, personalizedPD. #needfocus#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP

I make time to read edu books in the summer and make time throughout the year to check Twitter for ideas to reenergize myself and get ideas to implementing my classroom! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A6: A focus over the last couple of years is debunking negative perceptions about our district. I’ve worked on that by focusing on creating community partnerships and by highlighting the good stuff using social media #LeadLAP
A5 My personal passions are spending quality time with my family and friends, traveling, playing music, sports, yoga, and definitely dancing:) #leadlap
A7: All the "little stuff" (emails, paperwork, csv files, etc) can consume my day if I let it. I am constantly learning/growing in time-management/organization so I can be in classrooms by day, but still be present w/ family at night.
#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Absolutely! It's (#TWOTCW) an amazing book - highly recommend to anyone wanting to push themselves professionally and discover what they "really" believe about learning. Good stuff! https://t.co/czHGyZIUIw#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5 My personal passion is Music. It’s our universal language. I am always listening. Additionally, my other passion is writing. I have to make an intentional time for both. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP#ThePepperEffect
A6 Moving to a new district and the whole new school/unit bit, I will be diving in, building relationships, feeling the tone of the school, and encouraging others. I’ve been on the DBC book train as well as trauma reads for my new position. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A7- the 'stuff' that needs to get done for everyone else... too many emails to go through... want to focus on being IN Classrooms and coaching/supporting my T's to be the best they can be and bring it everyday for our kids! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A5 I have to set literal boundaries. Timers on the phone to carve out moments for reading, researching an interest, writing. Plan ahead for family days and adventures. Working out is not a passion, but it’s good medicine and it has to be intentional for me. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
This is important advice! Sometimes I will go without reading for a couple weeks because I am not into the book I chose. I need to be better about accepting that and moving on. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
Twitter has transformed my professional life and learning. AND has introduced me to so many amazing kindred spirits. Thank you for this, Brittany. #LeadLAP
A6 Twitter & Twitter chats are awesome to grow my #PLN & get great ideas. Always looking for engagement strategies & new tech tips. Summer is a great time to read all of the pd books! Currently reading #teachLAP & love it #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A7 Helping the powers that be understand why they need us. Talking to senior leaders and telling them the importance of school libraries all takes lots of time. Supporting my staff to feel confidence to talk the same way is my focus. Empowering them is a goal #leadlap
Q6: My professional focus area is to always team with my staff to embed a positive culture. Another focus is to give our students the very best beginning in school possible. I work on this all day every day! #LeadLAP
A7 what takes the most of my time is the daily paperwork and documentation. Areas I plan on focusing on for my own growth and improvement are growing innovation and a future driven atmosphere and culture in our building #LeadLap
A7. Balancing two sections of classroom teaching with schoolwide instructional coaching for a faculty of 98 keeps me crazy busy from bell to bell & well beyond it. Goal for this year is to make concerted effort for mid-week training runs right on the track after school! #leadlap
A7: Since I'm at a new school it's back to building relationships and culture. I need to be invited into those important conversations about teaching and learning #LeadLAP
A6 My professional focus areas are keeping learning relevant, promoting a culture of "yes", and certainly knowing those in front of me as much as I possibly can-Ss, colleagues, and admin. #leadlap
A7: As an assistant principal I wear many hats. I want to continue to grow in the areas of decision making, time management and effective communication. #leadLAP
A7: This year, STAAR Coordinator has been added to the collection of hats I wear. This will be my focus for growth, along with a new system for RTI. #LeadLAP
A7: Teacher observations take much of my time Oct-March; my job is to support teachers, so I am always working to be more present in classrooms & be a part of conversations & relationships across 5 buildings #LeadLAP
A7: Planning takes time...I hope to empower more, take the lead less, be in classrooms more, and connect w/Ss, staff, & the community more. Hoping to also present more!
AND #ShareMOEdu podcast will continue! It’s part of me now!
@Eric_Carlin#LeadLAPhttps://t.co/WlbjPZiXvj
A7: I'm a new administrator, so the "newness" of balancing building relationships, carrying out my duties and taking care of my self care require planning & organizing-I know you plan what you value (and I value everything I just named) #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
Call to Action: Identify which balance quadrant you will focus upon and don't forget to share with the #BalanceLAP community throughout the year! #LeadLAP
A7: Instructional leadership, planning/managing athletics & activties, and student culture are the big aspects of my position. I really want to focus and grow in the area of student culture. #LeadLAP
A7: Being in classrooms is my number one priority so that means I have to find ways to make that happen. Every day. All day. No matter what! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A7: Most time goes to the finding and thinking through new ideas for integration. I plan to FOCUS as my focus for growth. Now that my #EDUpassions are narrowed down a bit, I can really begin to put more time into those. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A7. I’ll be focusing on learning a new curriculum and school system, and making school amazing for my kiddos. I expect the new curriculum to take the most time. Thanks to @BethHouf for sharing the happy emoji pirate flag. Found my theme. 😊 So excited! #BalanceLAP#LEadLAP
A7: I work hard to make sure that interactions that positively impact Ss take up most of my time during the school day. Having no chair at my desk really helps. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A7: I got into education to help people & I’m naturally a “fixer,” but people don’t need “fixing,” they need someone to listen so that they can do the thinking & the learning. So this year, I’m going to talk less & listen more - & have more fun! #JoyMatters#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Q7: Paperwork (keeping up with grants) takes up a lot of time in my position. I plan to focus on more time in classrooms engaging with students. #leadlap
A7: I am the Secondary Teaching and Learning Administrator. I hope that most of my time is taken up by being with Ts and Ss supporting teaching and learning. I will focus on learning more about supporting CTE. #LeadLAP
CTA: I am definitely focusing on positional and professional as I navigate a new normal with my leap of faith. It is exhilarating and affirming to be here in this space of #LeadLAP with all of you great educators! #BalanceLAP
A7: I've worried that my identity is tied up in being a character educator at a school, so when I retired in May after 34 years, I thought I might be lost for a little, but it turns out my identity is more about my passion for serving people & planting seeds of joy. #leadlap
A7: Great question. I need to do a time audit. I feel like managerial tasks take too much time, but in reality I get to spend a great deal of time on things I love. My need for balance is too much time in mtgs & not having time to do the work from the mtg. #LeadLAP#balanceLAP
A6: Professionally, my focus is how to be a better leader, and how to support leaders! The #4ocfpln on @voxer is constantly pushing me to be a better leader and I can listen when I have time. Its always the goal to make it to two chats a week! #LeadLAP
A7: I’m a rookie principal so I’m asking questions, leaning into the strengths of others and extending myself grace as I grow into this role this year. #balancelap#LeadLAP
A6: Learning more about Universal Design for Learning to support ALL students in inclusive environment. Also building capacity re: computer science. Make time by following applicable hashtags, Facebook groups evenings while family relaxes in front of TV. #BalanceLAP#leadlap
A7: Titles don't matter. What does is responsibility/honor that ed leader titles bring & how you use this to promote what is right for ALL kids, staff & community. Compassion, competence, growth, communion w others...this is the path to great work and living. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
In my new role as a grade level chair, most of my time this summer has been trying to establish a relationship with the rest of the team. One area of growth I want to work this year is being an advocate for my students & fellow teachers #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A7: As a (‘new’) Kindergarten teacher, my kids take most of my time...and I love it! Learning how to best serve their needs will continue to be my greatest priority this coming school year. Despite having 2 years to go until retirement, loving my work! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A7: Being in classrooms is my number one priority so that means I have to find ways to make that happen. Every day. All day. No matter what! #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A7 my sped case manager duties-data, ieps, emails, etc. I’m working to focus & be more present in the moment with my students rather than thinking about a situation out of my control or an upcoming meeting. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A7: Jumping in late because I'm on my way to Ren Faire! The things that consume my time are all the paperwork and accountability pieces. My goal is to spend even more time in classrooms despite all that! #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
Get in early. I also tried to calling kids out of class. I would watch the room, leave a positive note, and then talk to the student I needed. Sometimes I would offer to deliver some notes to Ss or items their parents brought for the office to make sure I got in rooms. #LeadLAP
A7: As an #eduAdmin, the day can get away from you pretty quickly with the daily operations. My goal is to be more present in the classrooms to increase my time as an instructional leader. #leadlap#BalanceLAP
A7 Teaching & learning always my top prof priorities. Team leader & ILT leader will also take time, but worth it for building prof relationships & + culture. #LeadLAP
For reading interventions, our school has had great success with Leveled Literacy Inteventions (LLI). For behavior interventions, PBIS (Positive Behaviors and Interventions has been great). This year, I am going to try the PAX Good Behavior games. :#LeadLAP
CTA: 1)Me time and not feel guilty about it. 2)Immersion in where the magic happens at school. 3)Supporting other leaders in district and throughout my PLN. #GameON#LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
Speaking of balance..I am off to fix up some okay-tasting food for my son. I am a terrible cook, but I always mix in love ;), so he doesn't mind #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
CTA: Here's where I have to learn to limit my focus, can't put 100% into all four. Goal is to focus on positional because I need to model balance and find ways to encourage the balance of others this year w/ a lot of change happening in our building. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A7 Headed into a severe behavior unit with high needs. Professionally I look to continue to build up leadership and student behavior strategies. #balancelap#LeadLAP
If you have not read #BalanceLAP yet, we encourage you to pick up a copy of this newest #LeadLAP guide. It is such an important part of being an exceptional leader. https://t.co/KWX1VGWgsK
Call to Action: Identify which balance quadrant you will focus upon and don't forget to share with the #BalanceLAP community throughout the year! #LeadLAP
A7: Unfortunately in my position politics, bureaucracy, compliance issues can suck you dry and keep you from the good stuff. It takes a great deal of intentionality and a passion for people to keep me focused on the good stuff #LeadLAP
What an awesome chat today #LeadLAP! We are honored to learn more about each of you and hope you will let us know if you ever need any support with #BalanceLAP!
A7: Majority of time spent coaching teachers in classrooms (modeling, co-teaching, collaborative planning). I grow to better support them by staying up to date on EdTech via Twitter, build relationships with those I serve for authentic, relevant experience. #BalanceLAP#LeadLAP
A6 This year I will focus on 2 connected goals 1 be in classrooms and giving good feedback, and 2 impact instruction with more active participation in PLCs. Ask teachers to be reflective of practice. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
