hi Kathy. Hope you had a great vacation.
Good Morning First day back from spring break. For some reason, my body recognizes 5 am better than 7. Good to be back
I did.Now back to the grind! The toughest part of the year!
Good morning. Stacey from NJ. Ready to start the week off on a positive note and
Awesome. Good luck to her. Would love to see the finished product too!
morning Ellen, hope you are feeling better
The beauty & the joy 4 me is that I have a horrible memory, so I honestly don't have ONE standout situation https://t.co/sTMLkYj3he
Good morning, Friends! I with

https://t.co/4uEn59pUpJ
I had an unforgettable difficult situation almost every day last yr. due to a S who was crying for help by acting out. 1/2
any sign of thr migrating storks
I didn't always know how to handle him. My biggest "success" was starting a private journal between us. I will never forget him💔
hope it was a great break and welcome back!
Good morning Jennifer from Ohio
Good morning ! Josh, lead learner from NJ trying to decide which difficult situation to select. There are so many as a school leader.
Thanks! Had good family time, my Daughter was in the Lion King at school, and saw David Gilmour Live in NYC!
Good morning - Marifran, hs librarian from NY, ready to (bring on the coffee)
Morning...Michael from NJ heading into Week #2 of PARCC
Stacey Love the great attitude!
Once had a class that I just didn't like. They didn't like me either. 1st period. Had to have a socratic circle about fixing us.
good morning & happy Monday!
Good morning, friends. Steve from NJ here returning from spring break and ready to
our worst term too. Still Im sure the kids will help inspire you
(1/2) 3yrs ago *that* S from a rough home wrote a poem abt being forgotten that brought us all to tears. https://t.co/5A01vOG4J5
Right there with you, Lori. A blessing and a curse.
Everyday is an opportunity to reinvent yourself... I greet the next-day awkwardness w love and a smile. https://t.co/5MDvX4GRSx
The beauty & the joy 4 me is that I have a horrible memory, so I honestly don't have ONE standout situation https://t.co/sTMLkYj3he
As an admin, I would say the most difficult is dealing w/irrational family members
I'd say dealing w/ fights. My first school was a rough one. Lots of conversations about how to handle those situations w/ Ss.
Good morning beautiful people
Ditto. An extra cup of coffee is brewing!
Anytime u r disciplining a S is tough. I always try & end w/caring & compassion regardless of the cons. given
i agree with that but admit that its really hard in practice.
Good morning from NJ! Oona here -- I teach ELA to 11th & 12th grade. Back to school today after spring break
One that particularly hits home with me is a S who shot and killed himself while playing with a gun over the Thanksgiving holiday
(2/2) I think we all gave him a hug. No one treated him like they had after that. They embraced him and truly befriended him.
Good Morning! First time joining.
Good morning! Decided it's time to ramp up the exercise and healthier eating. Gorgeous weekend! Monday now. https://t.co/uHPn60XxQ6
It doesn't get worse than that.
So important. Always try to end those conversations w/ a handshake if I can. Let the Ss know it isn't personal
Agreed! Judge the behavior, not the Ss. Every behavior has multiple motivators. Get to the bottom of it w/ patience!
Thanks so much. I am trying to focus on my Ss. Time with family helped this weekend.
Lesson 'flops' over the years...I reality I admit to experiencing...but my students helped me see the change that was needed!
Walking away from the only school I've ever worked for was pretty challenging too. I've dealt by being here each day💕
had a Ss who had anger issues & threatened me in class the Admin gave me a police escort out of the building at nite for a few days
Most difficult situation - I had a student report being abused by step father - reported to DYFS - led to incarceration
Allowing the Ss and Ts to express their emotions and grief in the days following started good convos and healing to begin
Its easier w/some Ss as opposed to others, but I always try!
I'm not sure I deal with negative teachers well. I either say nothing or a I explode. I wish I could let it roll off.
welcome Christy. We come from near and far here
Very much so. I taught grade 2 at the time.
My worst day teaching was 9/11. So much uncertainty & fear among staff & students, what to share, whether to watch.
Wow. Yeh. That's a tough one. Can't just walk away.
Good morning, . Jumping in late. I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina.
is now trending in USA, ranking 31
Absolutely. There r consequences to eery decision, that is always the lesson
Howdy Ku! Hope all is well in Argentina.
The undeniably worst was Sept 11 with3rd grade. We had to be silent about it all day, then tell them bf dismissal bc bus w/older Ss
The day I was told they were moving my grade and my school and there was nothing I could do about it.and then go teach.
Had a T that wouldn't comply 2 rules & basic tenets of teaching. Held her accountable and coached her out of teaching @ my school
It was literally a personality thing. I would want to talk to most of those kids outside of the room. Thats rare.
Don't know how Ts continued on 9/11 after they heard. Grateful to all of you. Grateful I wasn't a teacher then
you two are kindred spirits with the coffee thing:)
or a middle ground were you can have a real convo to express your feelings, tuff though https://t.co/2vzRO3XY2D
I'm not sure I deal with negative teachers well. I either say nothing or a I explode. I wish I could let it roll off.
Good morning ! Been lurking for a few weeks. Going to try and be more active this week!
Student throwing a table at me.
Handled it badly. Probably angered him more.
Good morning friends. Connie from NY here - a little late to the party this morning. Need coffee!
As a young T I didn't handle argumentative Ss voice well. Wish I knew then what I know now. Would have used it for good, not evil
Well done for seeing it through and getting the child to safety. So many go unnoticed.
It was the year that I learned how to help Ss deescalate from flipping furniture & not making it worse. https://t.co/vP12ftcobj
I was a senior in HS and classes were suspended and we watched coverage until it was dismissal
That day was just awful. https://t.co/4HIi5axzv0
The undeniably worst was Sept 11 with3rd grade. We had to be silent about it all day, then tell them bf dismissal bc bus w/older Ss
Calling parents with not so great news is always difficult
Good morning, folks! Brad from NJ. How to get students to embrace obstacles and struggle in the learning process. Have a nice day!
Yes! you only help the S grow as well as you as an individual when you consistently act in a compassionate caring way
Good morning friends! Gina from Cincy! Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Morning from Maryland. MS T ELA
Sandy Hook was another awful day.
sorry to hear that Aaron.
Yeah Ive had a few student deaths. Hard. Real hard.
I second that! Hope all is well in Ghana, too.
I was in an all-day PD. Wanted to be with my kids.
9/11 was a tough day. Our community dealt with a lot of loss, not to mention all the uncertainty that day
Now I'm ready to tackle the rest of the year-post
I wish we got training in de-escalating issues.
Had a student who's mom passed from cancer a month b4 grad. We held an early grad ceremony in her living room so she could attend.
I had a year like that as well. Ugh!
One of the most difficult situations was telling Ss that our school we loved was shutting down. It was heartbreaking.
had Ts on my team in similar situations. How do you even appropriately handle that!?!
I can hear the voice drop as I introduce myself on the phobe
I really appreciate your honesty, Manny.
yes I had 2 RIF's difficult to face the Ss for the rest of the year https://t.co/kUu6e6msq4
The day I was told they were moving my grade and my school and there was nothing I could do about it.and then go teach.
That makes perfect sense. And I know that, but in the moment im rarely good at expressing it.
We had misinformation. I vaguely explained the situation as we circled up at end of day. The reality hit and I choked up
Hi Ryan! I'm doing well, thanks! How is everything in Ghana?
I hear ya on that! I've been racking my brain for one "standout" and it's so hard to recall. https://t.co/GTGFEgtR8q
The beauty & the joy 4 me is that I have a horrible memory, so I honestly don't have ONE standout situation https://t.co/sTMLkYj3he
It's tough now, too, b/c the Ss in front of me have few memories of it. I tell them the story of where I was
Yogi Tea gives you little bits of wisdom on the tag. From yesterday, its 1 of my favorites. So true. Grace is an elixer.
Hola! Buen día. Hope all is well.
this topic is one of those touchy ones. you either dive in or 'lurk'.
Any difficult situation w Ss - stay calm and empathize. Behavior is a form of communication for them - most are expressing a need
oh my gosh. What a difficult & truly sad event for the family and you.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard of.
https://t.co/vXXPEbhmVj
Had a student who's mom passed from cancer a month b4 grad. We held an early grad ceremony in her living room so she could attend.
I know I've had difficult days, but I can't think of one specific one.
That is the power of good and kindness https://t.co/ucDabqoPTe
Had a student who's mom passed from cancer a month b4 grad. We held an early grad ceremony in her living room so she could attend.
Oh my goodness, how touching for that mom and that family. Beautiful!
9/11 was the toughest day hands down.
Thanks, Ellen! Hope all is well for you too.
thanks. It was tough on so many levels. Worst part may have been the mom's denial which is so tough on the kid
Lesson 'flops' over the years...I readily admit to experiencing...but my students helped me see the change that was needed!
Exact same 9/11 experience as but in first grade with students getting picked up all day from our NYC commuter town.
I have a colleague who tells me to "be more duck". I'm a !
I agree w/ what some others have said-Sept. 11th was worst day-Our town has federal detention facility-we were on hyper high alert
There is a great Canter class on it: Classroom Management to Promote Ss Learning. Helped me a lot w/ Ss
. Sometimes we need to walk away to find treasure elsewhere. Otherwise we become stagnant. You did well!
that sounds really challenging
One of the worst thing is trying to make a Ss reflect on behavior, not being able to get thru that Ss bc refuses to see own mistakes
be more duck? what does that mean?
Had T 2 T conflict. Revisited school vision & value statement w/ them. Reminded Ts it's about helpin Ss not them. They reconciliated
I had a similar situation 2yrs ago. Student still contacts me about her sadness 💔
Running late but ready to w/. Hardest have been sending Ss home when I didn't know if they'd eat again until school.
Have you explored Conscious Discipline? Prob more for elem, but the principles are universal.
Depending on grade most weren't even born. Impt for them to understand the significance.
here's to a stronger and healthier community of teachers! On the treadmill now.
that is so awesome! . Much sadness of course but what a wonderful thing to do b
for the Ss today its just another day in history, few have a clear memory of it. Can't let it get forgotten https://t.co/jwHpdsP9BK
It's tough now, too, b/c the Ss in front of me have few memories of it. I tell them the story of where I was
thanks Oona.
Remember reading that many moons ago.
Might be worth a revisit
the tough situations I can remember all have to do with parents. Some have been very challenging.
I was home with my kids at that time. Never ran faster to the bus at pickup time. All the moms were crying
Trying to keep it together after being told I was "a cancer on our faculty" then apologized to for "misunderstanding" her words 1/2
One year we had a tornado touch down and we were taking cover for over 2 hrs. I kept a calm voice & just let my kids hear me talk
The year that our school was closed as a cost-saving measure. We were a school family (& still are). New school doesn't have that.
I wrote a script the first time I had to make a call as an admin. So nervous. https://t.co/o0GlCgsSKJ
I can hear the voice drop as I introduce myself on the phobe
It is still beyond my comprehension.
let it roll off your back. Don't take it personally.
#1847 Patience is not simply the ability to wait - it's how we behave while we're waiting. — Joyce Meyer
https://t.co/Poo6ZXb8hf
A few parents picked up their kids as soon as it happened. All day teaching as tho nothing going on was a pressure cooker.
yes. The welfare people are very good. I remember how draining it was.
Yes-our school resource officer, a county sheriff, and I just cried in each other's arms.
I got the heck outta there that summer. She retired. I still miss my teamies at that school. 😢
Hopefully that won't happen in Delaware ! https://t.co/mIjUOeNI5k
One year we had a tornado touch down and we were taking cover for over 2 hrs. I kept a calm voice & just let my kids hear me talk
Thank you Susan💗 I'm hoping this will be the case. I have to believe in this. https://t.co/2O2S840IWk
. Sometimes we need to walk away to find treasure elsewhere. Otherwise we become stagnant. You did well!
Columbine happened my first year of teaching. I was in a 5th grade class with an unlocked, outside door, how scary now a days.
As Ts we face a fine line betw being fully human and being fully professional at these times. It's an awful spot to be in.
oh no. That's horrible! I can't even imagine how that affected your class community. 😢
I think the science of it helped me. When Ss have adrenaline in their system, reason has little value
fail. Fail again. Fail better. Each time growing as an individual.
Ghana is great. Warm and toasty. :)
but you did it andceach time it's easier
Alright. Back to work. Enjoy the day
does show us how much the world has changed. Sad https://t.co/3THqHlmTyc
Columbine happened my first year of teaching. I was in a 5th grade class with an unlocked, outside door, how scary now a days.
Thank you very much for everyone who shared their exp on todays
Have a great day, Friends.
ok folks. I have a crazy long commune this morning. gotta get moving.
. I'm sure most of it was reaction. Hard to plan for that until it happens. I have room of verbal sparrers. Hate it.
Have a great day everyone!
Had a popular S pass as a result of criminal act in the presence of his biological twin brother.
That one hit really close to home
Wow. Kudos to you for keeping it together! Words hurt and those must have burned. Glad it was resolved but wow.
Surreal. Having math lesson, literacy, etc., pretending. And literally not knowing facts. Rumors only.
Reading your courage and strength to these challenges have certainly given me inspiration. Here's to a fantastic week!
good morning! I'm in the same boat. Been trying no sugar for months. Relapses happen though.
Have a great day all. Remember, we deal with challenging situations and it is our role to be there and stick our necks out for kids
I think this is when the parenting gene kicks in. S's need 2 see that we are impacted as well but at same time be strong
Those are hard. The kids really do give the best feedback.
. Hopefully it wasn't prompted by a current situation. If it was, wishing you well.
Happy Monday everyone. Take some time to celebrate the positives today!
Probably the most reassuring thing for scared Ss. What a scary situation.
Thanks everyone! C u Tuesday AM! Make it a great day.
The difficult moments definitely grew me as a person and a teacher.
Yup. Had my relapse over vacation. Back to being good!
This has been a great chat! Have a great day everyone!
I use a script w/ Ss w/ behavioral issues. Keeps it logical. What did you do? What is the rule?
Happy Monday everyone and have a fabulous week
. Me, too. When Ps see you genuinely protecting & parenting their kids under such conditions, all seems forgiven.
Got Principal's permission to have him clean my classroom daily for a week. Wasn't suspended despite school tobacco rule.
and all the awesomeness that we have had to endure and are better for it!
Instinct just kicks in-these are my kids, I need to keep them safe, I need to keep them calm. comes to life
. We did it on a Friday afternoon. It took me the wknd to recover. Emotionally draining. I'll never forget it, or her joy.
I struggle with how to discipline Ss when they're hitting each other.
Good Morning All! App of the day is Penultimate- anyone using it?
yes I just state facts. Sometimes parents want opinions but I keep it professional
Thank you so much! It will happen.
Similar to Cons Dis then! Ss operating from brain stem (fight or flight) have to be calmed 1st
Yes that tends to happen. It stretches us.
Sugar is my weakness too.😞
Do you follow ? His work is amazing. Highly recommend!
Visited the family on some weekends but became a mentor/big bro 2 surviving twin 4 yrs. Hear he still talks about me yrs later!
#1848 I don't want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered... Malala Yousafzai
https://t.co/n23XNdiCkm
just getting S an out to remove themselves from situation helps too
Recently, I've had been harassed by a Ss & their parent which made my classroom unbearable, my admin switched the Ss thank God.
1/2I feel the same way about lazy teachers as well. I work very hard to do what I'm supposed to do, & https://t.co/1mIsWxpcI7
I'm not sure I deal with negative teachers well. I either say nothing or a I explode. I wish I could let it roll off.
Those were my exact thoughts! I was scared too! I kept praying in my head but saying if u can hear me ur ok https://t.co/tHKe6Gijbw

I've seen Ts walk away. That was tough
that sounds horrible! . Tough one. https://t.co/hjOORffW0g

have to connect w you about - probably later in week when I'm more organized. Have a great day
set schedule and beautiful weather inspire healthy practices. Still considering Boston, Kathy?
I am currently reading her book. Just got it on my Kindle.
It really was! I was 28 yrs old. It was also my first year of being an admin. Changed my outlook at a young age
seldom realize how difficult that must be for leaders.
you are right about the weather being an inspiration!
school is big on restorative justice. Fixing relationships. Ss relate to that
Stevia in my coffee. I just had to quit cold turkey. Nothing sweet in my house, & I feel much better!

Have a great day everyone! Good luck heading back today
Supposed to be 80 here today in MD😎
One way I know how hard it must be to counsel a T out of teaching is that strong willed Ts last longest.
Woo-Hoo!! I'm psyched 4 today-get to learn & lunch w/ !
Had an admin once tell lots of stories to Ts. Used it as a sort of currency. "Confiding" in us.
what a great message for a Monday - thx for the reminder, Spiri!
Good morning how will you and ? Share teacher leadership stories
A mighty fine example of PLN Power in action happening here ->

I am! Still need to work out the details. but would so love to see you all F2F!

Hi everyone. Paul here from Germany. Curious to see all your answers
Good morning MST! Mixing it up today w a drive to Newark for . It is in the train car 😳😷
My most difficult/emotional situation teaching was when a student reported abuse by step father. reported to DYFS. he was indicted.
I had a S say something very inappropriate. Luckily S didn't seem to understand so I just kept teaching & pulled him.aside later.
Good morning, love. popping into the MT chat today as well. been a while!
ooh, that reminds me of a few other moments over the years...
S copied an entire webpage and turned it in as his own- w/o even bothering to change the font. 😳
Good Morning I've got so many stories. I wonder if is snowed in today??? Hmmmm.
Rhetorical question: Why are "unforgettable difficult situation[s] in class" such spam magnets? Happy Monday anyway,
In my first year of teaching, I stepped into the middle of a fight w/o thinking. I was fine, but won't do that again! Yikes!
ah, the stories of plagiarism. I've had a few of those as well!
Called Ps and As to say, "Not saying that you did anything, but I noticed this..." Mtg w Ps, S who denied copying, A supported me.
hoping to get there in 2017. We'll have to get together for coffee :) (or a shrimp on the barbie?)
it wasn't as bad as they claimed it would be! No snow days here!
Supportive A are where it's at. Lucky to have them! Plagiarism is never fun to deal with.
A few months later, same S turned in something copied entirely from the Internet in another class
When I taught high school I had a lot more crazy stories!
풀싸롱 예약문의 강남풀싸롱 강남야구장 선릉야구장
Thank goodness for supportive A. Ps totally denied, "son is a model citizen, captain of team" blah blah blah

What happens (or what do you do) when you start to lack or at
A tiny 6th grader came to 1st period high on who knows what. So sad. I was paralyzed. Finally called security but handled it poorly

Morning, Jay! 18-20" Sat-Sun but I dug myself out yesterday so off to work I go! Hope you have a super day at Slackwood!
Hey How are you? Long time since we've seen each other around here!
Great plan. This happened ~10 years ago, when I taught at the HS. Ps were appalled that I suggested it.
