A2 I’ve told before of tchrs in a district that referred to children on a certain bus route and likely to cause trouble. They did not realize that was intolerant because they weren’t identifying a particular race #ELLCHAT
A2 I heard a school leader say at a conference that they tried hiring diverse staff representing the cultures of the community, but it was hard to get “those people” to do things the same as everyone else in the school #ELLCHAT Why hire diverse staff to make them blend in?
A2) In MS, kids feel pressure to be like everyone else. When cultures or behaviors are different, they can sometimes react negatively or w/confusion. Modelling openness as teachers is helpful to them. #ellchat
A2) -Cultural Awareness is the ability to recognize the different beliefs, values and customs that someone has based on that person's origins, #ELLCHAT
A2) -Tolerance is a fairness and objectivity toward the people who differ from a particular way of thinking or living, and it is the absence of demanding those people change their ways. #ELLCHAT
A2 A teacher told me he was trying to get his 5th graders to memorize a list of terms but the ELLs wouldn’t pay attention. He asked me how to make them pay attention - never considered his teaching. Do tchrs talk about changing “them’ rather than changing self? #ELLCHAT

In myriad ways, but the worst is when we lose the opportunity to bring students' funds of knowledge to school. I'll never forget a student whose grandfather fought in the Vietnam War - for Vietnam. He thought his perspective would be "boring" to the class - FAR from it. #ELLchat
We also lose not understanding the cultural function of behavior. I've seen Ts perceiving students as "loitering" for lingering at school after hours when this behavior is normal/part of a "community center" feeling in home country. #ELLchat
A2 How can we shift teachers to say “I teach you as a student, for each student” instead of “I teach this way, the student’s job is to fit in”. #ELLCHAT
A2. In some of the districts we've been in, there is definitely a lack of awareness, let alone tolerance. It's so important to start with recognizing your OWN culture & that can be hard to do unless you have an opportunity to leave it & reflect on it from a distance. #ELLchat

We also lose not understanding the cultural nuances of ELLs. I've seen Ts perceive students as "loitering" for lingering after school hours when this behavior is normal/part of a "community center" feeling in home country. #ELLchat
A3) Lowered expectations, disconnection with school community, isolation. ELLs have so much knowledge to bring to classes, but too often are silent. (silenced?) #ellchat
A3: When there is a lack of cultural awareness, there is an inability to build relationships. This makes it difficult for Ts to connect with Ss #ellchat
A3 Something so simple - many tchrs of young children seem to not be aware of how being in a classroom where you don’t understand what people are saying could affect child's behavior! #ELLCHAT
A3 Strategies for recognizing how language/culture differences can affect children’s behavior, and strategies to proactively address https://t.co/hkUFfB3SWl#ELLCHAT
A3 I call out the “celebration” of culturally irrelevant “holidays” with Pinterest crafts like making cutout leprechauns for St. Patrick’s day or singing a song in Spanish for Cinco de Mayo. How about asking students what holidays are important to them? #ELLCHAT
Let us know how it goes!! Sounds like a great experience for your Ss.
I'm going to use your "What is your dream?" Flipgrid! #BetterTogether#ellchat#ellchat_bkclub

And let's move beyond just holidays or any aspects of culture that are at the tip of the iceberg. Let's get to the deeper layers of the iceberg! #ellchat
A4) To engage Ss, tchrs must reach out in ways that are culturally & linguistically responsive, Tchrs must examine the cultural assumptions and stereotypes bring into the classroom that may hinder interconnectedness. #ELLCHAT
A4. In many ways, but what first comes to mind is less bullying, less bias-motivated behavior...ultimately better mental health and more learning taking place. #ELLchat
A4 Study shows teachers use of children’s home language changed how the English speakers treated their Spanish speaking peers in preschool! Tolerance must be modeled so children can learn https://t.co/l4PeHRA47n#ELLCHAT
A5: Feature students & their diverse backgrounds as one way to foster cultural awareness. Value the differences & what we can learn from others #ELLChat
A5 I wrote this children’s book based on research showing which skills we can teach young children to help them get along with their ELL/DLL peers. https://t.co/Dhx5X9np0g#ELLCHAT
A5 I like the concept of “cultural humility” not that you are ‘competent’ but your humility makes you open to learning about each child’s and family’s culture lifelong #ELLCHAT
A5) I have Ss bring in a family treasure that speaks to their culture and share it with the class. Develops pride in culture & helps speaking skills. #ELLCHAT
A5 Carol Vesely wrote about this idea of “Cultural Humility” and talks about it in this webinar series (links to article here too) https://t.co/DpPlBulejV#ELLCHAT

Feedback is critical in developing language for #ELLs to help them improve language choices. Consider using this resource to reflect on how you give feedback and what kind of feedback you give. #ELDassessment#FormativeAssessment#ellchat
A6: Policies for language and culture are helpful when building a more tolerant school environment. However, it is the mindset that leaders embrace that will help foster an envrionment that will be conducive to supporting ALL Ss. #ellchat
Q6 )What policies can your school adopt to provide a more tolerant school environment and build educational opportunities for ELLs?Feature cultures of Ss who are in your class. #ellchat
