Competency-Based Education (#CBE) is a system of personalized learning where students master specific knowledge and skills at their own pace. CBE is different from traditional education, which emphasizes completing courses over a set period of time. #ldchat
A1. An advantage would be that if a student needs more time in one area, they can have it, rather than moving through a subject "half knowing" it due to time constraints. #LDchat
CBE is especially good for students with Autism. They're given a chance to learn, rather than just be shown. ADHD students get smaller classes and specialization to help inattentiveness. Both get support in executive functioning. #LDchat
A2. CBE is individualized, but can also be isolated. Make sure to include activities that allow student-selected groups. Build self-esteem, self-confidence. Social skills too. #LDchat
A3 - I think its important to clarify how a student will not "fall behind" if using CBE, if they are taking more time to learn certain concepts. #LDchat
As an academic therapist, I worked side-by-side with SOT's teachers. I'm a former teacher so it was easier for me to interact with the parent. They understood everything going on with her son. Empowerment! #LDchat
Q4. The use of #CBE in classrooms is growing, but it hasn’t been fully adopted nationwide. What are some roadblocks to adoption, and how can we clear them? #ldchat
#LDChat are their any college level Competency-Based Education programs out there that students who participate in these programs at the high school level can transition to after?
I don't get some of CBE, though. The tough part for my student who went to a CBE school was grading and homework. He had homework and grades for the first time in college. Not a smooth transition, for sure. Any suggestions? #LDchat
@bstackbu I'm particularly interested in learning about any roadblocks to adoption @SanbornRegHS may have had. What was the process like of integrating #CBE into the school? #ldchat
