How do you open a 500ml pop bottle. Get them to write a routine to do it, good for testing assumptions (such as turn the lid anticlockwise until lid comes loose - can't be done without releasing the lid) #caschat

  • missedabracket Oct 16 @ 3:13 PM EDT
A1 Acting out 'daily routine' instructions given by year 7! Someone always misses out obvious steps which are only obvious once they miss it out. #caschat
  • Vanderpere Oct 16 @ 3:13 PM EDT
Yes! I did that very thing last week with year 8 #caschat

Ooh, what a great idea to link it with transition! #caschat
    In reply to @dawnhallybone
  • Burgess_DM Oct 16 @ 3:13 PM EDT
I get students to solve algorithms, constantly make mistakes to the classes bemusement. I deliberately leave out key instructions that pupils have to identify and add in themselves. It makes them think more about the problem #caschat
  • scottturneruon Oct 16 @ 3:15 PM EDT
Like that, think I will try that next year. Thank you. #caschat
    In reply to @Burgess_DM
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:16 PM EDT
Q2. What are your essential ingredients for a broad and balanced computing curriculum? #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:16 PM EDT
Yes, writing algorithms to get the best/highest score in a game, win a game like battleships or to solve a puzzle like rubiks cube are great! #caschat
    In reply to @MrsMounsey
  • Animate2Educate Oct 16 @ 3:16 PM EDT
A1. Inspired by @BarefootComp ‘Crazy Characters’ activity I like to use @rickygervais ‘Flanimals’. Pupils design their own Flanimal and prepare algorithm for another pupil to draw. Then get to see how ‘precise’ they were with their algorithm. #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:16 PM EDT

I try to space things out over the school year so boredom does not set in but do not forget to include basic use of docs, spreadsheets and presentation etc #caschat
  • dmount28 Oct 16 @ 3:19 PM EDT
A2 - ensuring teachers don't just have a weekly computing lesson. Embedding into all subject areas allows so much more potential to be creative and innovative, to consider the correct software for purpose, and for children to spend time really working on a project #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:19 PM EDT
    Question 2 is live! #caschat
  • KJSICT Oct 16 @ 3:20 PM EDT
A2: Lessons focussing on CS aspects, as well as cross curricular lessons focussing on IT and Digital Literacy. Cross Curricular project work is also great #caschat

    In reply to @clcsimon
  • DdR333 Oct 16 @ 3:21 PM EDT
A2 #caschat A solid base of IT skills, a generous helping of #STEM#STEAM activities, topped with lots of opportunities for physical computing, sprinkled with lots of investigation-makes for the perfect @RedfernElec Crumble, or @codebug / @Raspberry_Pi
  • MrsMounsey Oct 16 @ 3:21 PM EDT

A2: Also at primary level i try to get them ready for the big move up so they have all the knowledge they need. #caschat
  • jgreenupnorth Oct 16 @ 3:22 PM EDT
A2. Has last weeks @CASDurhamHub i was talking to a teacher about my @microbit_edu session. He asked do you do this in year 10 & 11 i said no. The i thought why not? Iteration, Selection and Sequence can all be taught through a microbit #caschat

A2 - a mix of all strands, some theory, e-safety/cyber security, some programming (text based and block based). Unplugged - not always on a computer #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • Animate2Educate Oct 16 @ 3:23 PM EDT
A2. I work loosely in Primary on three strands of Online Safety, Digital Literacy and Computer Science. Within DL ensure that digital music, photography etc is included and within CS ensure that the ‘how it works’ element is covered. #caschat

Q2 needs to involve a bit of everything like all recipes if you overload it with one ingredient it won’t work #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • dmount28 Oct 16 @ 3:24 PM EDT
I try to find ways of bringing DL into english, but the current focus on writing does make animation/green screen/film/audio projects harder to fit in - but still worth it! Gives the children an audience, and an awareness of purpose #caschat

  • missedabracket Oct 16 @ 3:24 PM EDT
A2 Theory followed by practical activities to see the theory in action. Regular reference to digital literacy skills & employability skills. #gamification to act as a carrot. #caschat
  • sneekylinux Oct 16 @ 3:25 PM EDT
#caschat have let some of my clubbers play around with kdenlive and they really like it..

  • Animate2Educate Oct 16 @ 3:26 PM EDT
The ‘unplugged’ aspect is essential and yet so overlooked in so many Primary schools. Still a culture of if they’ve been sat in front of a digital device that they’ve ‘done Computing’ this week rather developing essential computational thinking skills etc. #caschat
    In reply to @MrsMounsey, @clcsimon
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:27 PM EDT
Q3. What would you class as your ‘showstopper’ lesson and why?#caschat
  • dawnhallybone Oct 16 @ 3:27 PM EDT
If you do that you may end up with more than a soggy bottom 😂 #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • Burgess_DM Oct 16 @ 3:27 PM EDT
A2 - Extra curricular activities are important too. Great mix of activities for the IDEA award which covers each strand. My mission this year is running this club with my digital leaders to get many students their bronze award. https://t.co/5xmOVw3LhB #caschat
  • mberry Oct 16 @ 3:27 PM EDT
The guess my number game. Coin problem (how many ways can you make 20p with UK coinage). Nim. Anything where children can find a systematic way of solving the problem #caschat a1
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • sneekylinux Oct 16 @ 3:28 PM EDT
I seem to do a mix of 60% computer an 40% unplugged #caschat

    In reply to @clcsimon
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:29 PM EDT
Agree! #love going #unplugged. I do find, however, that some students can find unplugged activities too abstract which is why it's always good to use a variety of strategies! #caschat
    In reply to @Animate2Educate, @MrsMounsey
  • PhillipsCompSci Oct 16 @ 3:29 PM EDT
Sorry I’m late. Cyber Security, Graphics, Spreadsheets, what’s inside the box, understanding it not just using a computer #caschat

    In reply to @clcsimon
  • Animate2Educate Oct 16 @ 3:30 PM EDT
Think that sounds like the perfect mix and would be about what I would plan when developing bespoke curriculums with schools around the UK. Generally I find that only the odd unplugged lesson is happening in many schools. #caschat

  • MrsLMJ Oct 16 @ 3:31 PM EDT
    A3 - This #caschat
  • DdR333 Oct 16 @ 3:31 PM EDT
A3 #caschat I love introducing @scratch the first time they make Felix move and also the first flash of an LED, be it with @_codebug @RedfernElec Crumble or @Raspberry_Pi
  • jgreenupnorth Oct 16 @ 3:32 PM EDT
A3 Unplugged is great. I like networking for that. Getting the kids passing messages around. Tearing up paper to make packets. Passing them around (packet switching) and nicking a few along the way. #caschat
  • sneekylinux Oct 16 @ 3:32 PM EDT
A3: I know this one sounds weird but they all love the binary lessons inside and outside as it is more involving and more of a cross class lesson, but my little guys are y r3 to yr 6 so may be diff for the secondary teachers here.. #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 16 @ 3:32 PM EDT
    Hear, hear! #caschat
  • Animate2Educate Oct 16 @ 3:33 PM EDT
A mixture of the physical and the digital (plugged and unplugged) is often great in a lesson. I do ‘Underground Algorithms’ where pupils have to plan route algorithms from one destination to another on London Underground map and the check with ‘TubeMap’ app etc. #caschat

A3 - I like the 1st Pi lesson - before we get involved in any kind of computing - just exploring what each wire and part does, seeing inside the Pi, and hooking everything up! The kids love being able to build the computer themselves! #caschat
  • missedabracket Oct 16 @ 3:37 PM EDT
A3 The contemplation on their faces when they realise everything on a computer / CPU / network is just a bunch of 1s and 0s. Some great resources to show this include https://t.co/2rug6v3DF5 and https://t.co/RruCVtEgbx to appreciate the scale of #computing #caschat

There's a VERY talented young man coming to the UK from Nigeria next week to speak at a couple of Computing/Coding events. He has a visa but his costs have just unexpectedly escalated by c.£250, I'm wondering if any sponsor could aid him. Pls DM me if you can.

A4 - agreeing to teach computing across KS1 & 2 when I really had no idea. Best risk ever. Never looked back #caschat

A4: my biggest risk is making sure we have enough machines with a working battery to complete said task....lololol #caschat

A3 - Has to be "line following" with crumbles or microbits or edison. Spent last week working with BT @adastralpark helping deliver a 1 day Crumble workshop for 800 y5 to y13 - great learning. #caschat p.s. Still over 600 kids on the waiting list which says a lot.

#caschat A4. My first #Steam #STEAM #MakerEd lessons. A room full of tech and googly eyes and completely child led in terms of creativity. Absolute chaos but fantastic results. So much problem solving, collaboration and experimentation

A4 Giving the students a creative programming task to do on their own. The deep end. Then not helping too much while they swim out! hopefully with out drowning #caschat

as a dad of young boys - one of the main things I learn from the job is to teach my kids resilience, and that easy options are not aways best! Links to growth mindset too I guess, but risk is so important - when something is hard, then you are doing your best learning! #caschat
