The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Come to think of it, studying space flight from the humanities perspective does wonders for curiosity as exploration has for centuries. What's out there? How do we get there? Who will go first ? Important: what will we eat !!!??!! #bfc530
ME! But did you notice how women were missing from the group shot of the "guys" cheering it on? We need STEM, and we need some girls to get in there. #bfc530@bohndrake
I think promoting student agency is critical - that idea of choice. How do we structure classes so that young people can pursue their passion/their own ideas? #bfc530
We need to model curiosity as teachers and also be sure our classrooms and curriculum allow students the freedom to explore what interests them. #bfc530
Shameless plug: Please add to the why I teach list. Myself and @MrLeBrun are collecting a list in hopes if learning how to recruit more teachers into the field. #bfc530https://t.co/x4W1lI3C0M
I think it starts with teachers who are curious themselves. Be an example. Tell students what makes you curious. Then we need to offer students as much choice as possible-let them explore topics they are interested in, let them decide how to share what they've learned. #bfc530
Wow. We do a day.
3 parts
Part 1 or 2 either:
Mission Control
or dressed as an astronaut on a fake Mars
Part 3 - doing science experiments on rocks collected
#bfc530
By being enthusiastic and curious ourselves...I try to always think aloud or act like I can’t figure something out (sometimes it’s not an act:) which prompts them to try and help or try 🤗👍🏻 #bfc530

Engage students through effective questioning. My Questioning Techniques page https://t.co/h52WunllwZ#bfc530 "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." Albert Einstein
Students are inherently curious...and creative. Trick is to not quell that as they progress through school (reference: https://t.co/Za9VRNG0wO). There are ways that work, especially when school/classes are focused on needs & interests of students & not just adults. #bfc530#pbl
That is so true !!! Another reason why I was so upset when my school denied me a PD to attend the State of NASA on Monday- I want them to see one passionate woman abt space because it's contagious !! #bfc530
Invite free exploration, inquiry, Genius Hour, student-driven learning opportunities. I’m often amazed what sparks curiosity in my students when we do something as simple (and healthy) as going for a walk together. #bfc530
A teacher who displays genuine passion for their subject can pique curiosity. Telling an engaging story can be powerful in stimulating interest in your students #bfc530
❤️this Q-It’s how we should start every plan, every day. This yr I have wrked at taking what I WANT to say, and instead finding ways for S to discover learning. Goal is to ‘up’ game w/mystery boxes and more surprises. My S Council & I are wrking on rm transformations #bfc530
Be curious! Make learning an adventure, a great fact finding expedition, make content releant, give Ss V&C, listen and respond with questions to take kids to deeper thinking, smile, laugh and care :) #bfc530
Yes! Was at @RITtigers yesterday & took a picture of this. One of the only Colleges of Engineering in the country named after a woman. Goes along with a recent #GlobalEdChat topic. Wish I didn't have to Google who Kate Gleason was. STEM has many women, celebrate them. #bfc530
It's my "go-to" answer for so many things #bfc530:
MODELING
A strong, enthusiastic, passionate educator can open an unbeknownst pathway for a child. Use your energy and superpowers to transform and inspire.
I like all the answers about good questions. So critical. #bfc530 My wife and I joke that at parties the best people to hang out with are the good question-askers. They are the best conversationalists.
When I visit a school to talk with students about writing, my favorite part is when I finish my short presentation and ask, "What are you curious about?" A bunch of hands always go up. Somehow that feels way more inviting than "Any questions?" #bfc530
Deliberately build in things like #geniushour#pbl so that students can pursue their interests within the framework of the standards. Students have choice and you can guide them to mastery of the standards while supporting their interests. #bfc530

Yes! Start with what students care about and build from there, not from a canned lesson or textbook. My job is to help point them to academic connections for topics that are relevant to things they know and love. #bfc530

Agreed! I remember reading about a study that looked at that - people's perception of a person influenced by how many questions they asked. Question-askers scored much higher. #bfc530
Also my classroom from decor to lesson structure is different from the usual. It encourages engagement. Not unusual to see students dancing to lesson themed intro song #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 folks. Nothing ⚡ #curiosity like a good question, from the teacher or even better, Ss themselves. Encourage them to develop & ask questions, and create environment where they feel comfortable to ask anything, also allow the time & space to explore answers.
Students can tell. Had a long conversation about recruiting people to teach yesterday. All great teachers once had a great teacher. (I hope thats true) #bfc530

I hope you experience your own sense of curiosity today...not just for our students..life-long learners need to continue to experience curiosity! Wishing you all a great day! #bfc530
Sparking curiosity with visual prompts like image of a filing cabinet covered in some post-its:
👀 What do you notice?
🤔 what do you wonder?
🤓Estimate; too low, too high, best guess.
And use @PearDeck 🍐 to ensure every voice in class is heard.

Have a wonderful Wednesday all! Share your passion for teaching and learning, enthusiasm is contagious, spread it around! #bfc530#WednesdayWisdom#kidsdeserve it
Genius Day, Passion Day, Genius Hour, #PBL, school clubs, just spending time - ultimately we need to know our students in order to know how to get them curious about learning. It’s all about relationships. #bfc530
That would also include e-versions as well. Platforms that may look like sexy on the surface, but are really digitized textbooks, worksheets, or scripted lessons. We can do better. #bfc530
#bfc530 Wishing everyone a great day today, whether you have #school, or are at home in the #snow. I am so #grateful for this wonderful group. (I am sneaking a little bit of spring into my GIF this morning.)
Hey early birds, join me as I co-moderate #lcpsTchat this evening with @MiriamCheuk at 8pm EST, we are talking about facilitating growth mindset and resilience in learners! #bfc530 We’d love your input :)
Yes! It's so annoying when a school promotes "no textbooks, we have them all on iPads" Same thing. Going textbook free means PBL. inquiry, student driven learning! #bfc530
That's the truth ! I discussed that yesterday- why could my daughter do two hours of dance then an hour of basketball after school?? Because she sat all day long at school. #bfc530
Sounds like they missed a good opportunity to empower a teacher here! Ss would have surely benefited in some way by what you brought back to share. Sadly, I didn't even realize there was a State of NASA event. Imagine if a colleague attended and shared back! #bfc530

I was horrible with this early in my teaching years. 38 minute classes didn't help, but I didn't help either. Took some looking in the mirror to realize I wasn't doing this enough at all! Wait time is huge. #bfc530

Tell my students when I'm monitoring hall, there will be no "due (sic) now". Talk to someone, stretch, etc. And of course allows me movement within the class. We take away recess time and wonder why they have too much energy to focus #bfc530
Oh, BTW, peeps: My org helps to promote #DLDay, which this year is on Feb 22. #bfc530 See @OfficialDLDay for more info - if you have not signed up already. Thanks!
Great stuff there! I also plan to explore Warren Berger's book as it was recommended by @techcoachz (I believe). I saw a powerful keynote from @TiffanyPoirier, "The Inquiry Ninja" at Connect17 and took a ton from this too. #bfc530

“Textbook free” should really mean an influx of primary sources and culturally-relevant texts. There should not be any fewer text resources in a classroom once we ditch those textbooks...just different, better ones! #bfc530

I'm sure you'll find a way to make the magic happen for your Ss! So awesome you bring these experiences to them through @SkypeClassroom too. 🚀🌎 #bfc530
Well it will be next Monday and will most likely be live streamed! I've done amazing things before - like Skype with my students at a test launch, have them ask questions from astronauts, etc! But sometimes paying a substitute for the day wins out :/
Yes. Focus on their interests and passions because their natural curiousity will lead them to continually exploring and discovering. Innovation. #bfc530
Yes! It means changing your pedagogy to one that has Ss learning Front and Centre, whether PBL, Design Thinking, Enquiry Learning, etc. A good teacher can teach Ss under a tree away from electricity, chalk boards, etc and still make it S Centred & interesting. #bfc530

Yes. Being a naturally curious person so I am always exploring. Ss seem to think it's cool that I ask questions abt what they are doing in class. #bfc530
And in Finland, after 45 minutes, what do the Ss do, go out and play for 15. @EricJensenBrain will tell you that neuroscience research shows the importance of moving in learning! #bfc530

A creative and communicative teacher is not based on just what tools they can take into a classroom, it's based on what they can do with students without anything. Inspire, relate, create and connect. #bfc530
Get to know your students & tap into their interests, question the world, ask the “what ifs” get them to “think different” Did we ever think a car would be on its way to Mars? #bfc530
teaching reading and literacy is more effective without a textbook IMO because Ss have to navigate complex text that is not formatted in the usual way #bfc530

Morning,#bfc530. To promote curiosity, I'm partial to move described years ago by math educator @ddmeyer: Invite perplexity. Use what we see/read/do/learn to knock states of mind slightly off kilter, creating itch to explore & understand more than we do now.
