Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) no one goes into teaching for the fame and glory of it. Unfortunately our society right now thinks it is more fun to drag the negative through the mud than to lift up and celebrate the good. #oklaED
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) It is imperative we get better at telling the + stories - we have incredible things happeminh daily. We are usually too busy doing the work. I read recently negative memories take up more brain space than +. We must begin to share the + more frequently. #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5: bc people are annoying in general, & don’t want to take the time to understand. We have to keep talking! This has gotten better since the walkout. We shouldn’t have waited so long to start sharing (in words, pictures, videos, and more) about what we TRULY do each day! #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A4) ALSO.. my dear friend and long-time-ago teammate @KasNelson who I look to daily for her encouraging and enthusiasm for her Ss. She leads by example and never gives up! #OklaEd
A5) We live in a society that loves to watch people fail. We revel in it. 😔Plus, there is the narrative that “public schools are failing” so anything that pushes that forward. We have to share our success bc there are more of those than failures!! #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5. The negatives always find their voice. We don’t need to balance with positive, we need to overwhelm with all the great things we are doing. #oklaed
A5) Educators must invest in their community. We have to make sure there is at least 10 positive stories to every negative one. Sunday School classes, community center lunches, social groups like Kiwanis and Rotary needs #oklaed Ts telling our story
A4. @MrLangleyPE was just named his building’s TOY and does a great job of using social media to promote fitness for his elementary PE students and their families. #oklaed
A4: We have an amazing JROTC teacher who makes it a point to ask about a person's service if he knows they have served. He discovered a veteran in Mid-Del who is a Silver Star & Purple Heart recipient. This Mid-Del hero is a bus driver, who was celebrated by JROTC of DC. #oklaed
A5 As a society we thrive on gossip and love to tell how terrible others are. When we have a bad experience at a restaurant or store we are quick to rant to a receptive audience, we seldom share the good. Shame on us for failing in that regard. #oklaed
A5 bad things spread faster than the good things. I think this is why @jmidkiff theory of always posting positive on social media makes it harder to bring out the bad when you see so much good #OklaEd
A5 partly because we don’t make the good stuff known the other is unfortunately bad news is like ice cream to too many people. #FocusOnThePositive#oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5). People are always quick to talk about others' failures, but very rarely share others' success stories or even celebrate in joy with them over their successes. I think a good way to find balance is to start a success wall at the school to show Ss and Ts successes. #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5: We joke about someone messing up their "ONE JOB" and hold it against them even though they may have done 99 other things well. We do this with each other and students. Our tendency is focus on the negative and want to be critical. Have to change! #oklaed
A4) I was sharing some hardships of a student in one of the classrooms I have been observing and one of my teachers went out and bought a resource that he could use in the classroom to help him succeed. She has no relationship with this student, just saw a student in need!#oklaed
A5: Everybody "knows" about education, they know what is okay and what isn't so when there is an example of someone or something who doesn't reach the public expectation it's easy to point out the flaws and misery loves company, but successes are more personal & private #oklaed
A5 (1/2) #oklaed Honestly, I don't feel this way at all. The print and broadcast media outlets in OKC have been pretty fair to us. I don't always want coverage when there's a negative story, but I don't blame them for reporting things that are newsworthy.
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5: Good news doesn't sell. Nobody wants to hear it. Everyone wants to read the drama so they can comment and speculate and stir the pot. I think it's everyone's guilty pleasure. It's why everyone is on social media. Waiting for the next controversy. #Oklaed
A5 Too many times the community is looking for failure...maybe it's human nature, I don't know...be we should always look for the successes and find opportunity for future success in failure. #oklaed
A5: Keeping the spot light on ALL Ss successes, big or small! Also, by showing and modeling teacher, admin., and school wide successes. Celebrate each other! Keep the positive light on. You know, like Motel6. 🤣 #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) Spend a lot of time dispelling myths about our schools when talking with voters. Usually they don’t have kids in school and believe the worst rumors they’ve heard (Yes, cursive still taught. Yes, schools still say the pledge of allegence, etc) #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
Q5) #oklaed I think that we live in a world where negativity outshines the positivity because we as a society don't take time to slow down and see where we are being successful. It seems easier to spread negativity instead of positivity, which is something we should change!
A5. I think it is because people are jealous of success stories and would rather tell failures to boost their ego. We have to just keep being the voice of success stories and start turning those failing stories into success stories. #oklaed
A5) Many people have to make themselves look better due to things not going right elsewhere. Ts must continue to talk about their jobs in the community. Ts must be present in the community. Ts should love going to work every day because they are making a difference. #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) On social media we constantly have teachers and parents giving balanced perspectives to “failures” that just need a fresh set of eyes before getting blown out of proportion. Working round the clock to hold onto that honor of teaching your kid. #oklaed
A3) One of my former Ss was at risk for graduating, though he always was the sweetest kid. He recently graduated with his AA and is working as a TA in an elementary. Always has the kindest comments regarding his former Ts and visits them regularly. #oklaed
A5 #oklaed leaders and educators are busy DOING the work of serving students. Building relationships in the community including with local media can help provide that balance. People don't know unless you tell them.
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
Silence is no longer an option. The narrative, the perception has been #oklaed is a failing system. Are you willing to just accept a false narrative. If the answer is NO, then what are we going to do about it. We must celebrate our success while our enemies celebrate our failures.
A5 (2/2) #oklaed We have also found that local media will jump on a positive story if we will let them know when great things are happening. I find them to be pretty balanced. The key is to cooperate with them.
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
Q6) Social media has made it much easier for #oklaed to share their successes, but it shouldn’t be the only outlet. Share a best practice that doesn’t include social media on how you or your school tells their story.
A5 many people today are constantly looking to catch someone messing up as if it’s like winning an award and then they scream to anyone that will listen about their discovery #oklaed
I think part of it is our culture. The daily news is full of bad news. People are used to talking about negatives. We complain to build relationships with people. We need to focus more on the positive; change our mindsets.
#OklaEd
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5: I’ve been involved in one of the worst #oklaED days in our history when 7 of my Ss died. It’s the worst feeling. And now we have so many shelters in schools. Failures have a place in the conversation....
A5: But as @BatmanEducator TOY 2019 put it about the T shortage hundreds have left but THOUSANDS have stayed. Our success stories need to rise to the top! #oklaED
A5: It is truly sad that failures = ratings. All of our schools are full of success stories.....if we don’t tell them nobody will. Take every opportunity to tell the great things that are happening in #oklaed!!
The 10:1 rule! Just like when interacting with students, it is important that we mention 10 positive achievements/disciplines to the child for every negative achievement/discipline we mention. #oklaed
A5) Educators must invest in their community. We have to make sure there is at least 10 positive stories to every negative one. Sunday School classes, community center lunches, social groups like Kiwanis and Rotary needs #oklaed Ts telling our story
A5: Negativity sells. We (#oklaed) must be willing to tell our story and share all the great things going on. If there are always 2-3 sides to a story are you telling yours or is someone else? Make deposits, earn withdrawals.
A5) It’s easier to complain about the negative things that happen rather than take the time to think about the positive. It’s amazing the positive things that happen in #oklaed daily, you just have to take the time to recognize them.
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) At lunch after church, I had to stop bragging on all the amazing things happening at Union. Sometimes I think people get tired of my proselytizing. 😉 #oklaed
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) Perception is reality. If we allow negative stories to shape the perception of #oklaed we are doing our Ss, T, and parents a huge disservice. Positivity is a choice, and one we need to strengthen as an intentional tool to build trust in our public schools.
Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A6) Having someone who can push those stories out on behalf of the district helps. A point of contact who can disperse them to all media outlets and community groups. #oklaed
Q6) Social media has made it much easier for #oklaed to share their successes, but it shouldn’t be the only outlet. Share a best practice that doesn’t include social media on how you or your school tells their story.

A6). I currently observe in a school in Norman that shares student successes outside of the classroom on a "success wall." They share clippings of newspapers of articles that mention the students in the school being successful in the community. #oklaed

A5: It’s important to build positive relationships with media outlets, they will report the positive things if they know about it. Let them know! #oklaed
1 thing we are trying at #alexps is to tell our story first. Ts are encouraged to make contact with Ps before their children get home. IMO, Ps are better #oklaed partners when they hear the school's or Ts account of the issue first
A4: love how @ebarnes73 is reaching all kids. Love how @ElizabethS_OK gives her heart in everything she does so kids can have healthy lives. @joy4ok has revolutionized our state agency & service to all kids #oklaED

Q5) I've always been amazed at how easily & fast #oklaed failures find themselves being told or repeated. Why do you think failures move at the speed of light while our successes stay untold? How can we balance the stories being told about ourselves and our school?
A5) Part of that is on us. How many times have you asked the press to a school event? Sent a press release? Written an editorial? A blog focused on the best of your classroom? Even a social media post. They don't know what they are missing because we don't tell them. #OklaEd
A4) @OverholtShelley just came back to teaching this year when we needed a Spanish teacher. She has built a hands-on active classroom environment that is fun and super engaging. She is all about connecting with and meeting the needs of Ss and Ts in the bldg. #oklaed

A7: It's about image! We must do everything we can to show how "cool" it is to be an educator. I want us to attract more top-notch people into this profession that I love so much. Sharing successes can only help - all successes of S's, T's, schools, #oklaed & more!
Q7) We all agree it's important to celebrate our successes. Why do you think it is essential, both internally and externally to tell your story? Why is it important for #oklaed to celebrate its successes?
A7) In spite of the trying times in #oklaed we continue to do (way) more w less. Our children are watching and listening. It's up to each of us to champion the things we want to see more of. Kindness and positive energy are contagious!
Q7) We all agree it's important to celebrate our successes. Why do you think it is essential, both internally and externally to tell your story? Why is it important for #oklaed to celebrate its successes?
A7: Because there is so much negativity around education in Oklahoma in the news that it's important for Ts to share the goodness, the greatness, the success of what is really happening in spite of low pay, low funding, classes cut, etc #Oklaed Success stories = HOPE
A7) Stories are the lifeline of societies. Stories inspire, spark social change, help us develop empathy and understand new perspectives. Stories are POWERFUL! They keep us going; they provide connection. The world NEEDS stories. #soapbox#englishteacher#oklaed

#oklaed #7 We are the ones who can give the positive view. We have to share hope for our system, teachers, and students. We have the passion that can influence others!
A7 Because “the people” & especially their representatives do not really know what happens in our schools and the needs of #oklaed . Pls keep #okleg informed.
A7) As someone about to enter the teaching field, hearing about successes is the only way we are going to keep good Ts in #Oklaed and make students want to become teachers. Over half of my cohort will be leaving the state to teach out of state come May.
Q7) We all agree it's important to celebrate our successes. Why do you think it is essential, both internally and externally to tell your story? Why is it important for #oklaed to celebrate its successes?

Q7) We all agree it's important to celebrate our successes. Why do you think it is essential, both internally and externally to tell your story? Why is it important for #oklaed to celebrate its successes?
A7: We need to hear ALL success stories! Hard work molds success stories. When the story is told, the hard work becomes relevant. Regardless of age or position, we all like a pat on the back. We don’t teach for the credit but our teaching successes deserves the credit. #oklaed
Q7) We all agree it's important to celebrate our successes. Why do you think it is essential, both internally and externally to tell your story? Why is it important for #oklaed to celebrate its successes?
A8) Time is always our greatest barrier. This work takes tremendous energy, focus, etc. Striking that balance for everyone can get tough at times, knowing we still have a lot to do for students. $ for smaller class sizes + supports, needed. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A8 - Lack if flexibility in how we do school. Our days/class schedules/ courses offered assume all kids are the same & that they need to all learn the exact same things. #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A8) Obstacle? Change is essential in education; some of us are slower changing, but we get there. Old dogs learn new tricks at a slower pace. We don’t like being the old dog, but someone has to be that dog! That’s the only obstacle I see in our district. #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A8) At #alexps, the biggest obstacle limiting our success story is the lack of core government services kids of poverty need to break the cycle. We need DHS workers, mental health services, etc. Our kids can't focus on their future because they are too busy surviving #oklaed
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
A7) The impact of communicating and celebrating S successes with their families is HUGE. Ss and their families need to know that we are on the same team. #oklaed
A8: Too often in education we are comparing apples and oranges. It's difficult to show growth, when the numbers are on different groups and show up a year later. We need to be showing achievement within the same groups #oklaed
A8b High stakes testing creates an obstacle...too many times Ts feel that they have to teach the test...and are afraid to be innovative in their teaching. #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A8) In my district, things have been going good for so long that it is easy to become stagnant. Moving staff from a good status quo to great/awesome is where I'm at currently. Its easy to stay where you are when things are good. Why move forward when you "don't have to". #oklaed
A8. I think in any school, “some” educators do not like change so they do not understand the whole always improving for the better. We have to change their mindset to continue to grow as a whole school #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A9) Biggest legislative issue, IMO, is the 4 day school week. How can #oklaed Ts make a profound impact if we are limiting the time Ss are exposed to quality educators. 1080 hours and 180 days is just too small in my opinion.
A9) Getting rid of third grade reading test so teachers have the opportunity help students fall in love with reading and learning... instead of the pressure of teaching reading to pass a test #oklaed#micdrop
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
A8) the biggest thing I see is a lack of certified teachers. We have to get T pay to a point we can get and keep qualified teachers. My student teacher could stay at her part time job and make more than teaching. What do I say? #oklaed
A8: Classroom size is the biggest issue. 25 4th graders is a struggle. We need adequate education funding so we can hire more teachers and lessen the class sizes so we can better teach, rather than manage. #Oklaed
A8: Biggest obstacle is finances. Which cause: limited funds for projects/activities, limited technology (get the cheapest instead of the most effective), larger class sizes, buildings not cleaned, limited copy paper, limited counseling staff, limited effective PD, etc. #oklaed
A8) We had 21 positions turn over from last yr to this yr in our faculty of nearly 40. This is all too common. We must address T recruitment & retention. The first yr in any building has a steep learning curve. High turnover creates an unstable learning environment. #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
A8: I worry a lot about class sizes and teacher shortage resulting in students (including my own kiddos) getting short-changed. They won't get a do-over. #oklaed
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
We need to stop saying "funding" and start saying what #oklaed will do with that funding. We need LPC's. We need DHS workers. We need mentors. We need mental health workers. We need Ts to reduce class size. Spell it out.
I’ve made my views on the need for additional funding clear several weeks ago in an #oklaed chat. Now I’m going to do what more legislators should and listen to what teachers have to say about what else should come next.
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
A 7 We need the public to support public education. People need to know our success stories so that their faith in us is not misplaced. We have only scratched the surface of needed school funding to be at the regional average. It is more than teacher salaries. #oklaed
A8 I don’t have a school but I work w 57 statewide. The obstacles to success are currently lack of knowledge re: the OAS and more-rigorous OSTP, & the broader A-F formula, plus a ridiculously complex reporting system. Schools can improve,!if they can find the time. #oklaed
A9 Ultimately our success and the success of our Ss is not something that can be attributed to a single piece of legislation. Sure each of them will have some impact, but the T in the room has a greater impact than legislative measures #oklaed
I would have turned down the raise if you would have lessened my class size by hiring a new teacher. #Oklaed I just want to properly serve my students.
Being new to the state, district, school, and grade level. Lots of learning taking place, but I feel like I’m on an island. Positive perspective: this is a transition year! Next year the IEPs will be clearer, I will know paperwork processes, etc....
#OklaEd
Q8) In all things where improvement is the goal, it is essential for stakeholders to evaluate goals, challenges, and obstacles to success. What obstacles to success are currently present making success more difficult for you or your school? #Oklaed
I don't understand how Oklahomans & the #okleg can allow #oklaed children to continue to be given a discount education. We know the regional PPE average is much higher than in Oklahoma. this is unacceptable. We need to invest in our future.
#Oklaed
A:9 #oklaed the just one more thing we need you to do. But ten people have said it so now it's ten more things taking my time away from planning creative engaging lessons and taking away my chance to JUST TEACH! It's overwhelming sometimes. so I JUST SHUT MY DOOR AND TEACH.
A9) Funding is a huge issue & as a good T I absolutely deserve to be paid well. Full stop.
As far as S success goes, flexibility. We should not still be doing school the same way we’ve been doing it for 100 yrs! #oklaed
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
I would have turned down the raise if you would have lessened my class size by hiring a new teacher. #Oklaed I just want to properly serve my students.
A9) Addressing and protecting class sizes is my top priority. However, we know its directly linked to a myriad of other issues, pay gap, emergency certs., lack of funding, etc. We have a lot of work to do #OKLeg#oklaed
Q9) T shortage & T pay raises. Testing & Accountability. Class size & efficiency. Flexibility & SQ800. #oklaed funding & reform. What policy or legislative issue do you believe will have the biggest positive impact to your success story?
A10 #oklaed The voucher wolves are always out there, looking to make their move. We have to be on guard against their narrative, their bills, and their sheep outfits.
A8) I worry a lot about operational funding for schools and our state's "happiness" of using a funding model thats outdated by 10 years. We have to invest in our children and their future - period. #oklaed
A9: As a teacher, pay raises and the teacher shortage impact me the most. It is so difficult to find qualified teachers and then to be able to keep them. This year I have been SO blessed in my school and in my dept, love my colleagues!
#Oklaed
10) We must vote down SQ800! #oklaed is already underfunded. No way we should rob 5% of current funding and .2% annual future funding to our 3rd emergency fund. This is akin to saying I know your starving but we are going to force you to do away w/5% of your grocery bill
#Oklaed knows what we need. I’m a 4-day rural school week teacher. The funding I speak of covers all of the above. Sorry. Didn’t know there was a wrong answer!!
Great chat tonight @James409Jason and I'm glad to see so many pre-service #oklaed teachers here participating.
When you graduate, please consider Mid-Del! #MDPurpose
