Our second collaborator tonight is #IDedchat tweep @paulkzimm Paul was the catalyst for getting #googleexpeditions to notice Idaho! Here is a little more about Paul:
Busy, but quick. Getting things ready for summer school and had PD tonight. Youngest had softball last night. How is your week going? Be safe with the storms coming your way. #IDedchat
hi #idedchat. I'm Sara, a K teacher at an independent school in Lake Tahoe, NV. Thank you for the reminder, @averyteach Innovation means different things to different educators but for me right now it's doing what I think is best for my Ss not just what's always been done.
It's been good. Wrapped up state testing and trying to return to regular schedule. Will do. Looks like a great night of sleeping ahead for me! #idedchat
Agreed - that is the rub - Many Ts get excited about innovative ideas they see o hear about elsewhere....making it happen in their own world becomes the challenge. #IDedchat
My PD tonight discussed this and how our education system is geared for 19th century work versus 21st century. Things need to change and we need to provide our Ss and Ts with the tools to create and implement new thoughts for teaching an learning. #IDedchat
We are looking at a $12K grant for our school to purchase equipment this upcoming year. I have lots of ideas for increasing the robustness of the AR activities. #IDedchat
Great point - that is why it is just as important for administrators at both the building and district levels to have an understanding of "innovation" to support teachers. #IDedchat
R2: I am a pretty big tech geek; however, we must be extremely comfortable with the pedagogy of our area of expertise before tech can be added. Are we using tech for tech sake or is it truly something that will redefine and modify the learning experience? #IDedchat
I've found that my Ss (I've only been an elementary teacher) are so willing to try new things and generally figure out tech more seamlessly than I do. For me, it's putting in the time to set it all up and set aside enough for them to really try it out. #idedchat
#IDedchat Another approach we take is - what can we deploy that we don't have to manage. How can we make it fool proof and rock solid so that way there is no maintenance and I'm able to focus on other things.

#IDedchat Ah - the question we are all wondering. 2 answers - 1: Tech doesn't always have to be the innovation! 2: Tech can remove steps for teachers in their usage pattern and therefore create room adoption.
The change is coming for all of us. Saw data today that says technology abilities increase 2 1/2X every 2 yrs. if we don’t keep up, we are going to get left behind. Change MUST happen. #IDedchat
Oh absolutely. Our building is adding 14 new chromecarts next yera, and looking at the option to let students buy a chromebook to carry around. #idedchat
A3) I think my group rotation is innovative. I use 5 different group locations. 1- Reading, with and without software. 2- Sight words, Science, and books in cd, 3- Worksheet, manipulative math, 4- software based math, 5- typing, and Google docs. #IDedchat
#IDedchat A3 - There are too many to share but the innovation starts with active listening with the teacher. Hear their challenges and see their perspective. Maybe innovation is just syncing Google Drive? Maybe it's a full AR lesson? Each teacher is different.
A3 I love having flexible seating in our classroom and the observations we make about kids based on where they love to work and where they're successful working. It doesn't have to be expensive to be super! #idedchat
A3: I feel as though I have been innovative by not using a textbook in my classes for several years. I have also become very project-based with my curriculum to allow student expression. #idedchat
R3: first year in my district and I’m still learning, but we have done PSA for genetic diseases on @WeVideo, we do a 9-page spread project on cells and planets, and Ss created 3D models of mitosis/meiosis on @tinkercad, printed on 3D printers from @1stmakerspace#IDedchat
AND each student is different! Sometimes innovation is personalizing learning for students - letting them choose how they would like to demonstrate what they know and can do! #IDedchat
Our Ss have Chromebooks. We are 1:1, but some Ss don’t use them appropriately. It is a lot of monitoring, redirecting, #DigCit. It’s worth the effort for those who do believe in engagement. #IDedchat
#IDedchat VR is better for transporting to a location via the #magicschoolbus style but AR is better for exploring specific things. Neither is better or worse - they have different applications.
A3: We got innovative with our environment. We gave up our closets for sensory spaces. Put a hammock in hall closet. Couches in rooms. Belly rolling carts in hall. Motor room. Lots of sensory needs to meet. #idedchat
#IDedchat VR takes students to explore a location - be it on earth, in space, some other time, anywhere. Great for exploring and leaving the classroom. AR lets students examine something up close in a way VR can't. Maybe a heart or a car engine, up close and all angles.
When we looked at AR, my Ss were able to zoom in on the moon and identify Maria, highlands, craters, etc. I can’t do that just looking up at the sky during the day. We looked at hurricanes and tornadoes. Would like it to show how these develop and evolve. #IDedchat
I am thinking AR is similar to the "guided museum tours" without having to go to the museum. OR taking a picture, body part, planet, etc and making it come to life. #IDedchat

R5: I can’t take kids to the moon or into a tornado. Prob not a good idea to travel into a hurricane (might be a liability issue), but I can bring a model of this to them. #IDedchat
A5: AR has the ability to not only brings objects to the students but let's them explore safely and easily. No mess from dissection, no burns from the AR sun, and no logistics or large animals at school. AR makes it real with no risk. #IDedchat
Exactly! The beauty of AR is you're able to bring things into the classroom that wouldn't otherwise be possible: DNA, volcanoes, the Colosseum... #IDedchat
Exactly! Imagine bringing a 3D model of a frog into the classroom for dissection instead of a real one. Much more cost-effective and kinder to the frogs! #IDedchat
So....has anyone used Aurasma? Is this still around? I know that students could make audio or video and add a QR code to picture that made the picture come alive... #IDedchat
#IDedchat A6: Always target the impact to the learning first! If you can identify the impact to the learning first them you have leverage to create buy in with admins, teacher, students, and parents.
AR is augment reality where digital objects are placed in the real world through a device-Snapchat👻uses AR. VR is virtual reality- digital immersion where you're replacing our world with a digital one (Architectural engineers are using VR as the new blueprints) #IDedchat
Let’s say I take my camera to Costa Rica this summer and video my walk through the rainforest looking at biodiversity. I can bring that experience back to my Ss to engage in ecology, succession, evolution, etc. #IDedchat

You could do a museum tours using either VR or AR. The different would be that VR would transport you and your classroom to the museum, where you would walk the corridors and see the artwork as it's displayed in the museum. With AR, you could bring that artwork into the classroom
Look into Quiver 3D. I'm exploring that in the next few weeks to get AR into some pilot classrooms. May not work but I'm not worried about failing. :) It's a chance to learn. #IDedchat
Google Cardboard App. (Although I lost sound on my latest iphone. Not sure if they fixed it). Google Street View Map takes AR 360. Just don't upload to their cloud - it becomes part of GMaps. #Idedchat
VR can be used to extend learning experiences outside the walls of the classroom - without leaving the classroom. Take students to places they are reading about. #IDedchat
#IDedchat Find some pilot teachers who are willing to explore new VR and/or AR ideas. Tie it into the lessons they are currently doing then invite the admins to be a part of it. That's a decent step 1
There's a whole library of great content available for Merge Cube. I'm sure they could create content in Unity as well #IDedchat Would love to hear from educators that have created AR content!

A7: Have #googleexpeditions pioneer program come to your school to help teachers experience the process. #JSD261 is super excited for next week! #IDedchat
Absolutely! We’re currently beta testing an object uploader app that allows you to create and/or upload 3D objects you can then hold in your hand with MERGE Cube. #IDedchat

#IDedchat Oh my heck! We are on day 9 here in BCSD and it's been an overwhelming basket full of joy, engagement, and inspiration! Can't wait to hear about your visit!
If you have a chance to get #GoogleExpeditions into your school, do it. It will only get better with a little bit of time and feedback from people willing to give it a try. #IDedchat
