Heyyyyyy #OhEdChat pals!
I am LIZ from the OH• but currently living and serving as a Proud MS Principal in South Georgia • 🌴🌴
Five star quote right now:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
☠️ culture first
☠️ culture next
☠️ culture ALWAYS #LeadLAP
We have recovered! Funny story though••• had to pull my blinds up this week to “monitor” (and giggle about) the left over snow ball fights on the way to lunch! 😂🤭😂🌴❄️❄️ #OhEdChat
A1: I feel like any time I inspire or help any staff member in my building to exercise leadership that benefits students, staff, or our school, that is a success story. Leadership is great...even better when it's distributed and shared. #ohedchat
A1: one success: my superintendent has honored my request for 3:30 and later meetings••• which helps me work toward my goal of being in every classroom everyday🌟🎉❤️☠️ AND increases visibility which creates ExExExCitement in our schoolhouse! #OhEdChat
“The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.”
Amy Attinger, joining from Mt. Orab, OH. Currently teach 7th grade math #ohedchat
A1-As a leader-my biggest success is when teachers take risks and push themselves to do things that are uncomfortable all in the name of wanting to grow and do what's best for kids. #ohedchat
A1: I’m still new to the game, but I think a success story is my willingness to be a part of the team, whether that team is admins or teachers. We lead together and make decisions together. #ohedchat
A1. Leadership is believing in Ss when they don't believe inn themselves. Working 1:1 with them and getting them to say 'I can do it." When they gain the confidence, and begin to get their wings and fly.#ohedchat
A1: 2.5 years ago I entered into MS teaching. It was a new experience for me, but it was an opportunity to grow and share new ideas in a different environment! Took a risk and I love it! #ohedchat
A1: Watching a colleague who I helped mentor grow and eclipse me as a leader. It is such a great feeling to watch others learn from you and take it to a whole other level and one better than what you have done! #ohedchat
A1: I wish I could take credit for ideas but its my teachers implementing the plan that makes it a success. The mastery based learning has had a significant growth in student understanding which has meant improved grades and what we hope improvef Air scores.
#ohedchat
A1: I’m still new to the game, but I think a success story is my willingness to be a part of the team, whether that team is admins or teachers. We lead together and make decisions together. #ohedchat
I agree. I feel successful as a leader when those around me experience success. I get so proud when the teachers and students that I work with do great things. #ohedchat
But I'm sure they can take those risks b/c they know you are a safety net for them. That's the best advice I got when I stared my admin role. "Be a safety net for your staff" That was from the great @JaneLeach1#ohedchat
A1: I wish I could take credit for ideas but its my teachers implementing the plan that makes it a success. The mastery based learning has had a significant growth in student understanding which has meant improved grades and what we hope improvef Air scores.
#ohedchat
A1 I lead a PD on PBL at the beginning of the year and quite a few teachers have asked to know more and asked about ways to make their PBL better #ohedchat
A1: I wish I could take credit for ideas but its my teachers implementing the plan that makes r plans a success. Mastery based learning has had a significant growth in student understanding which has meant improved grades and what we hope improved Air scores.

A1: Stepping forward when asked if I'd consider being part of a state-level group. That one "yes" opened so many doors. @theJoySama@edtechgirl@DrBDrost#ohedchat
A1. Most people can lead when times are good, but successful leadership shines through in tough times through a clear, purposeful process... followed up with meaningful reflection. #Ohedchat
Q2: Authors Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky write about the dangers of leading in changing times in their book Leadership on the Line. What are some changes you have faced during your time in education? #ohedchat
A1: Stepping outside of my school’s comfort zone and integrating technology tools wherever I can. Taking chances, learning from mistakes, and watching my students and colleagues get excited about what’s happening in my room #ohedchat
I agree. I feel successful as a leader when those around me experience success. I get so proud when the teachers and students that I work with do great things. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1 Leadership is evident in every club you advise, extra-curricular or sporting events that you attend, every committee to belong to and every act that you do to benefit your students and staff!
A1: Today, our town lost power. Some Ss were anxious, frightened. My motto: “Keep Calm & Carry On!” W/Backup Generator there were some lites. I mentioned, “Isn’t this a great adventure! It’s not what happens, its how we handle what happened.” #ohedchat
A2: Everyone doesnt get the same- Everyone gets what they need. Personalization not industrialization. Creativity should be valued over "correct" #ohedchat
A2: I'm 24 yrs in education, 19 as an administrator. I almost feel like, "What haven't I seen change?" Instruction, assessment, evaluation, ELL Instruction, you name it. I feel like as a leader, it's in great part, my job to "steady the ship" when change comes. #ohedchat
RT Q2: Authors Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky write about the dangers of leading in changing times in their book Leadership on the Line. What are some changes you have faced during your time in education? #ohedchat
A2: Twitter and blogging! Sharing ideas and gaining support from those in the field! It's reassuring and motivating! And of course going HS to MS!! #ohedchat
A2: For me, the explosion of technology is one. I went from sharing an Apple IIe with a colleague to one-to-one. Whole new set of tools to support learning and teaching. #ohedchat
A2: i feel like at times there has not been enough changes in education. Still feel that the traditional model is alive and well. I believe innovation is happening but not keeping pace with what society needs or demands.
#ohedchat
A2: at our school we’re transitioning to truly authentic learning experiences. Such an exciting time, yet can be stressful for some who aren’t comfortable yet. Helping to support that process is truly an honor. #ohedchat
A2: Changes are part of it••• all have pushed my leading• it has been AWESOME🎉🌟🎉 for me to work in lots of districts because of relocating •Lots of differences• made me better each move➡️➡️ But the #MainThingIsTheMainThing#OhEdChat ••and that doesn’t change! ❤️
Q2: Authors Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky write about the dangers of leading in changing times in their book Leadership on the Line. What are some changes you have faced during your time in education? #ohedchat
LOL...50 is on the good days. On a tough day, about 100. I'm never worried about not learning more about being a leader. Opportunities present themselves at every turn! #ohedchat#leadership#neverrunout
#ohedchat A2 so many changes, but yet not real changes. Just variations of things that have been done before. We need a break the script and do something profoundly different!
A2. The biggest change I have seen in teaching... is the teaching. The best leaders of the classroom have changed from teachers of content...to FACILITATORS of LEARNING! #Ohedchat
A2) A challenge in leading these days is when many want instant success. Sometimes change takes time, and both T's and S's will face failure. How we handle setbacks is how we will succeed. #ohedchat
A2 Change is difficult at any level. In education it is even more difficult. I have been part of great transformational initiatives like small learning communities at LHS and 1:1 at FMS. I have failed in other initiatives but I will not stop working towards helping Ss. #ohedchat
A2: It seems the most difficult changes for me as an educator have been new initiatives presented with little information. It’s hard to get on board with something you don’t fully understand. #ohedchat
A2. Changes in what Ss are exposed to and family situations ave changes my approach not only with my Ss but essentially all people. Trying to find the Gold in every person is a new daily Goal. #ohedchat
A2: The increase of mental health issues with some of our students and the greater focus on social-emotional learning and care seems to be something that has changed over the years. #ohedchat Excited for the #OAESA June conference.
A3: would I be able to adapt to MS Ss...more preps than HS! For social media, would the school community accept my participation in it? They do see the benefit. #ohedchat
I wonder, too, if there is truly an increase in mental health issues, or if we're more aware of them? Focusing in on the whole child is so important--social-emotional & academic & more. #ohedchat
A2: Its an ever evolving never “1 & done”! We expect #Grit from our Ss, we have to be willing to model #perseverance as well as flexibility. Technology & Behaviors...major game changers! #ohedchat
RT Q2: Authors Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky write about the dangers of leading in changing times in their book Leadership on the Line. What are some changes you have faced during your time in education? #ohedchat
#ohedchat Ar3 there is never a shortage of people who say we can’t do it because. My biggest Challenege is to still move forward and not lose momentum!
A3: With my example of new intiatives, it’s extremely difficult to buy in without knowing the benefits and also the risks. I think knowing both are vital to joining in with the change. #ohedchat
A3: Risks--what if kids knew more about the tech than I did? (Of course--some do!) Early on--what if I break that computer? Lots of deep breaths, baby steps, patience with self & others. #ohedchat
A3: Change in Education is not easy. It is much easier to continue what you have always done. It made it more important to set the why, make it a priority, and provide support throughout! #ohedchat
A3: I think with any change, not providing a "why", not reaching out to those that need additional time to process, having it happen unexpectedly, lack of support. Also, people not being open to change. Not sure if those are dangers but definitely make it challenging. #ohedchat
A3-with any change comes resistance. As a leader, I love to observe how staff members react to change-fun to see the early adopters take off, followed by others. #ohedchat
One thought that Heifetz & Linsky share is that while some of us are excited by change, others of us grieve what we stand to lose in the change. That includes the familiar and comfortable. #ohedchat
A3: I think staying calm helps, thinking of change as an opportunity to learn and grow helps. Accepting what you can change and what you cant. #ohedchat
A3. A pullout tutoring for struggling Ss, I risked the job. I did not manage it well but I still believe we have to help Ss that are lacking literacy skills and math skills. If Ss do not achieve proficiency at early ages is going to be extremely difficult later in life. #ohedchat
A3. The scariest part in changing an approach is always is admitting to yourself changes need made, but we grow in discomfort so that helps remember that change is progress #ohedchat
actually, GROWING alongside @marktremayne and an already powerful @HCSD_ILC experience! I am fired up and ready to take innovation to the "edge" and on to ELITE! #ohedchat
In reply to
@jodiepierpoint, @HilliardSchools, @marktremayne, @HCSD_ILC
A3: I chose to embrace technology & behaviors...learn all I can. I ended up creating a blog site https://t.co/EuYWV8x4G8 to practice blog writing, use of the features the blog site offered. Behaviors, an opportunity to build relationships. #ohedchat
A3: the traditional system worked and has bern in place for over a century. Dont fix it if it isnt broken. However, kids and the demands of the world have evolved. The fear is now schools must find a new way.
#ohedchat
Q4: Heifetz and Linsky talk about viewing situations "from the balcony" even while being in the midst of them. How can a more global view be helpful in the midst of our work? #ohedchat
A3: I chose to embrace technology & behaviors...learn all I can. I ended up creating a blog site https://t.co/EuYWV8x4G8 to practice blog writing, use of the features the blog site offered. Behaviors, an opportunity to build relationships. #ohedchat
There is limited risk or danger with change.... as long as you have TRUST. How do you build trust is the big question... it starts with vision and communication. #ohedchat
True, but mistakes are something that I encourage and embrace with my math Ss! Sometimes I will try a problem that I’ve never seen with them before so they know it’s okay to be vulnerable and make mistakes #ohedchat#failforward
Yes.... most teachers like to be ‘correct’ and do things ‘right’, makes growth challenging if we’re not willing to risk not knowing or not getting it right #ohedchat
Absolutely. For some of us it takes a big, deep breath to embrace those mistakes. We have to model it--show our kids that part of learning is the mistakes and learning from those. #ohedchat
A4: we need to teach Ss that their world of learning is beyond the walls of the school. Model that learning by embracing methods different than the norm. Connect with tech to places they'll never get to visit! Open opportunities for Ss. #ohedchat
Some of the best leaders think about those they lead and figure out how to proactively help those that have trouble with change. Always comes back to the relationships and trust. No significant relationships, no significant learning. #ohedchat
RT Q4: Heifetz and Linsky talk about viewing situations "from the balcony" even while being in the midst of them. How can a more global view be helpful in the midst of our work? #ohedchat
A4 Having a global view helps us, as leaders, examine how all of the pieces of a situation connect. It also provides an opportunity to solicit perspectives of our team members, include their thoughts, and move towards our collective organizational goals #ohedchat
Q4: Heifetz and Linsky talk about viewing situations "from the balcony" even while being in the midst of them. How can a more global view be helpful in the midst of our work? #ohedchat
A4: Being part of teams and being part of the action, but not being ”in the weeds”. Allowing your team, the experts, to take control. “Tight grip on loose reigns”. #ohedchat
I'm learning that having that global view helps me keep things in perspective, too. Keeps me from taking something smaller and blowing it out of proportion. #ohedchat
A4: Allows Leaders to see different points of view. There are many different personalities and beliefs in Education. It is important that we respect and support each one if we want a change to succeed. #ohedchat
I find the best learning happens when there is a technology glitch, or things don’t go as planned. The Ss get an invaluable lesson to see our flexibility, adaptability and #resilience#ohedchat
#ohedchat A4: education can be very isolated work if we are not intentional about connecting with others outside our district, state, etc. There is no substitute for bouncing ideas off others outside our immediate sphere of influence!
Q4: Heifetz and Linsky talk about viewing situations "from the balcony" even while being in the midst of them. How can a more global view be helpful in the midst of our work? #ohedchat
A4: Sometimes, the balcony view gets you "out of the weeds" so to speak. It is always about understanding multiple perspectives. Helps to see it "on the dance floor" and "from the balcony". Perspective taking can be key to managing change. #ohedchat
Q4. I preach TTS, TTA, TTP, TTD every day. It stands for THINK...THINK AGAIN...before you speak, act, post, do, etc. This second “thought” process take 1.8 seconds, but allows clarity/confirmation in your actions. #ohedchat
A4-I think about this all the time. It's crucial for us to take a step back and look at the big picture. It's easy to get stuck in the weeds as educators. We must take time look at the "global view" #ohedchat
#ohedchat A4: education can be very isolated work if we are not intentional about connecting with others outside our district, state, etc. There is no substitute for bouncing ideas off others outside our immediate sphere of influence!
A4 I teach geography, govt and economics. I tell students if they can bring me 5 articles of clothing made in the United States I’ll give them an A (probably can’t do that). They can’t do it. It’s all interconnected #ohedchat
So true. Twitter and #ohedchat is one way I keep connected with others across the state and country. It sure helps with keeping perspective and also finding possible solutions and strategies.
A4. Need to teach Ss the importance of global learning and problem solving. We need to work with them on global issues to get them to think beyond 4 walls! #ohedchat
A4. 30,000 ft view of a problem is easier to say than done. As a leader, the ability to take a step back, reflect and see the problem from a different angle is a great practice hard to achieve in the middle of the storm.#ohedchat
Q5: Part of leading during times of change is facing conflict. As leaders, how we can manage the conflict to foster a strong focus on the priorities? #ohedchat
A4: I hope I am understanding this correctly...”Seeing The Big Picture”. It helps to have empathy, compassion for our Ss, our Teammates, the Administration leading during financially challenging times. There is no “I” in TEAM. #ohedchat
Q4: Heifetz and Linsky talk about viewing situations "from the balcony" even while being in the midst of them. How can a more global view be helpful in the midst of our work? #ohedchat
RT Q5: Part of leading during times of change is facing conflict. As leaders, how we can manage the conflict to foster a strong focus on the priorities? #ohedchat
Maintain the focus on what’s important, frequent celebrations for small wins and find a PLN and others that have similar interests/visions and help you maintain the course when the going gets tough! #ohedchat
A4. So many great answers to this and whole heartedly that big picture is crucial in leadership. Must have a pulse for what is taking place, what is current, and what is necessary to impact a building and Ss #ohedchat
A5: bring stakeholders in...provide transparency and insight of purpose and focus. Prioritize Ss first and what is best for the learning community. Ensure all are heard and understand. #ohedchat
Relationships! If we are successful in building positive relationship with those around us when challenges arise they aren’t seen as “conflict” but collaborative opportunities for growth. A feeling of “we’re all I. This together”. #ohedchat
A5: In part, never lose focus on why you got into education. Students. Making a difference. Changing the world. Challenging times can pull you away from those ideals. #ohedchat
RT Q5: Part of leading during times of change is facing conflict. As leaders, how we can manage the conflict to foster a strong focus on the priorities? #ohedchat
A5-Conflict means that people are growing and being pushed to the "edge" When staff is at the edge it's the job of the leader to help LEAD---it's our chance to coach them to take a step forward #ohedchat
Totally get this. Hard to not take it personally. Then again, if you didn't take it personally, maybe you didn't care so much. LOL...19 years in admin...I'll be searching for the answer for this like the search for the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones! #ohedchat
A5. Be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Be honest. Build relationships and trust. Comunicaticate, communicate and comunicate. Have good mentors and constantly reflect. Do it for the right reasons. THE KIDS!!! #ohedchat
A5: in the right environment built on mutual trust and respect its not conflict but dialogue that pushes the thinking for the betterment of the goal or vision. If conflict does a rise listen and try to understand the other person perspective.
#ohedchat
This was a big a-ha moment for me--thinking about how conflict and push-back is an indication of growth. It helps me reframe how I look at the situation, too. #ohedchat
A5. Focus on priorities, but listen to what people have to say for input and contributions during the change! Lessons can be learned on information and knowledge gained that is learned along the way! #ohedchat
A5: students are the top priority - that’s the bottom line. If that means connecting with them by using tools they understand (like using Snapchat), then that is what we have to do. Connect THEIR learning to THEIR world #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5: hold firm with your non-negotiables (building positive relationships, supporting sound instructional practices, etc) and during times of conflict, others will know your perspective and how it will all fit in
I agree--it's another balance--passion and investment, but not taking others' responses and holding them TOO close. (Yet reflecting & learning from them is good, too.) #ohedchat
A5: I honestly think conflict and having differences are a part of the process. It allows you to understand where others are coming from and truly dissect the issue from all angles. #ohedchat
A5: in the right environment built on mutual trust and respect its not conflict but dialogue that pushes the thinking for the betterment of the goal or vision. If conflict does a rise listen and try to understand the other person's perspective.
#ohedchat
A6: balance time. Stop to reflect...look at where you need to be in your personal life. Turn email off. No when to focus on family and when on work. Both areas need you. #ohedchat
A5: By being transparent, a great listener, empathetic & compassionate. Our District has to make budget cuts in the next few months...a strong focus is being maintained on the priorities. #ohedchat
RT Q5: Part of leading during times of change is facing conflict. As leaders, how we can manage the conflict to foster a strong focus on the priorities? #ohedchat
A5: In part, never lose focus on why you got into education. Students. Making a difference. Changing the world. Challenging times can pull you away from those ideals. #ohedchat
A5: I try not to think of it as conflict....I think of it as productive struggle. In so many cases we essentially are trying to reach the same goal. #ohedchat
A6: Find balance. Step away and be able to say no when you need. You can't be on your game and help others if you aren't taking care of yourself. #ohedchat
This was a big a-ha moment for me--thinking about how conflict and push-back is an indication of growth. It helps me reframe how I look at the situation, too. #ohedchat
A6: I'm still learning that the moment when I think I cannot possibly afford to take an evening or weekend "off" to recharge is the exact time I really NEED to do so. #ohedchat
A6: I make spending time with family a priority. It helps keep me grounded. To keep ourselves anchored, I think we have to remember what it’s like to be a teacher. We HAVE to put ourselves in their shoes. #ohedchat
Love the productive struggle way of looking at it--that's the kind of thing we want to provide for our students. It makes sense that we consider that for ourselves, too. #ohedchat
A6. Balance ia the key. Take time to laugh, enjoy your family and friends, but also enjoy your Ss in the classroom as well. Listen to their stories that they share, laugh with them, smile! #ohedchat
A6: Having a strong support system can help leaders through though times. This can include having others around to vent frustrations w/ & act as a sounding board for ideas. #ohedchat
A6. Go for a run. Take the long way home. Sit in the back of choir/band class and just listen. Lace up and run conditioning with the basketball team. Buy a can of Silly String... or just build a snowman! #ohedchat
A6: I give myself “Quiet Time” every AM to reflect on the day. I find opportunities to ‘grow’ professionally. Family Time anchors me! It might happen @ the most unexpected time thru a family emergency...always a blessing. #ohedchat
A6. Con’t. And have a strong network of like-minded colleagues that you can call and discuss your day with. Celebrations. Struggles. And complaints. Don’t complain to your spouse... they are tired of hearing it!! #ohedchat
A6: I have to get better at this one...working to build my PLN to help reach some personal and professional goals and find some balance in my life! #ohedchat
A6: Every person has a different type of thing that balances them as an individual and leader. You have to find your own balance...and make that work for you. #ohedchat
