#Edtechchat focuses on Education Technology. Co-founder Tom Murray says #edtechchat "connects us professionally with inspiring educators from all over the world, all of who encourage us to be better every day for the children and families we serve.”
Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself and share from where you’re joining us! We’re excited to welcome @EdTechCoaches as tonight’s moderator to discuss tips and tricks for coaching others!
What is your district using to measure students’ “tech literacy,” if anything? Thoughts for how to get formative data on a regular basis in this area? #edtechchat#edtech#digitalliteracy
A1 Most of the connections occur over twitter. This is a great professional library that is open 24/7. Face-to-face conversations at conferences (#edcamp, #ettsummit, etc) and around town are #EduWins. #edtechchat
A1 This is a great question, I work at a small charter school so I don't have a lot of official ”edtech coaches” in my world. But I’ve got a lot of experienced coaches and leaders that I try to learn from online and on my Humanities team #edtechchat#ETCoaches
A1: We have a tech specialist for our school, not sure that he is a coach, but he helps me quite a bit. I send a request ticket through email for support.
#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A1: I’m not a coach, more of an unofficial helper to the coach in our building.
I try to have a daily chat with our coach about new tools and tips!
You can always use Twitter to connect and meet others
#LUlearns#edtechchat
Don't miss the opportunity to connect with other #ETCoaches in person at our PLN Annual Membership Meeting at #ISTE18 on Monday, June 25 6-7:15pm McCormick Place W184c All Edtech Coaches and Facilitators are welcome to join us! #edtechchat
A1 #etcoaches#edtechchat My area makes it easy! Our district has 4 coaches and our county has quarterly ed tech coach meetings. Last year, 2 counties started combining so now we get double the encouragement and collaboration!
A1: At conferences and edcamps. I like that other states have regional meeting to get people connected. Wish OK had something like that. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
#iTeachDigital will be coming to you AUSTIN, TX in the spring! Look for us with @edvergent to have a meaningful PD about technology integration! #edtechchat
A1: through “jump start” programs in the summer as well as setting up appointments at any time. She’s not an edtech coach, but our Tech woman is phenomenal and is always available to assist with any tech questions throughout the year #edtechchat#sbpdchat
A1. My institution has an instructional technologist. However, I love to discover ideas in various ways—Twitter, Facebook, in the classroom, etc. #Edtechchat
A1 I will hold a one man parade if we were to add a tech integrationist to the staff. The role is a necessity for professional and student growth. #edtechchat#futureready
Send an email and she comes to our room usually right away in the afternoons. She teaches other classes. She's a busy lady but certainly tries very hard to help us out. #edtechchat#edu5213sbu
A1 I will hold a one man parade if we were to add a tech integrationist to the staff. The role is a necessity for professional and student growth. #edtechchat#futureready
A2: I love #twitterchats that help me network with other edtech coaches! We're always looking for more people to connect with here at #iTeachDigital! #edtechchat
Q2: Twitter!! I am just amazed at the wealth if knowledge and inspiration I can find from other educators and coaches on this playform. I also love me a good podcast or blog post when I need another perspective. #edtechchat#ETCoaches#PLN#teacher
A2) our building media specialist is really great at recommending online resources. In addition our coaches share resources and online sites around the district and building. . #edtechchat#edu5213sbu
A2) our instructional coach and media specialist send weekly info to keep us up to speed. Additionally we collaborate and research as needed. #edtechchat#edu5213sbu
Most definitely! Those are my favorite to play around with. I’m always enjoying my#edtech tools! Hopefully tonight’s #edtechchat can help me learn more!

@mrterborg, @s_bearden, @edvergent, @Flipgrid, @nearpod, @AdobeSpark
A2. Twitter Chats, Facebook, ISTE resources (so wish I could attend the conference!), SimpleK-12 resources, online courses, online book study groups, etc. #edtechchat
Q2- It is so much easier to connect with edtech coaches online! Twitter, Facebook, email, endless opportunities at your fingertips #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
Twitter has become my fastest growing way to connect with other professionals. Many other professional networks have been developed through my online masters program. #edtechchat
A2. Online connections are heavily Twitter with a little Hangout and email on the side. Sometimes we add a slice of blogs or two.
#ETcoaches#edtechchat
A2 Most of my online connections are formed through twitter. Blog posts also lead me down the yellow brick road. Ideas curated on @Flipboard and @diigo. #edtechchat
A2: Twitter!! I connect with other edtech coaches online by participating in Twitter chats. There are so many educators with great ideas. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A2 Twitter chats, I dabble periodically in Voxer, and Google Hangouts/YouTube Live events. I also have an ongoing conversation with my #GoogleEI cohort members #ETCoaches#edtechchat
They will say that the logical position does not exist because the logistical funding does not exists. There are also a handful of edus who pick up the slack so there is not a "need" yet...just a few Ts closer to burning out. #edtechchat
Yet there are plenty of professionals that don't know the #power of Twitter! It is such a great #edtechtool that can be used for ALL levels! #edtechchat
A2: I forgot about books studies. I am currently reading "Illuminate Technology Enhanced Learning" by Bethany J Petty @bethany_Petty#edtechchat Eetcoaches
A3: I think ppl are always looking for WHY use tech, so proving actually success rates could help with that; also top tools being used; like ability of tools by teachers
#edtechchat
A3: Probably what teachers are using for assessments and teaching, then whether or not these students are improving in testing or through projects.
#edtechchat#edu5213sbu
A3: The tools that teachers are using and outcomes to using those tools. Extra resources in core subject areas to help teachers facilitate instruction. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
Q3 It sounds simple, but what tools teachers are using and/or want to learn more about. I also found it helpful to know what their DREAM programs are. That directed my inquiry and sometimes I was able to make their dreams come true with current apps #edtechchat#ETCoaches
A3 How many clients are able to translate your coaching into meaningful results. What is the impact of those actions? Is there a monitory or opportunity cost? Does it effect student success in the long and short term. #EdTechChat
A3) data should be centered around student learning. What resources are teachers finding useful, how are those sites being used... along with reflection after seeing the data, how is student learning changing or improving! #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A3. Data collection is tough b/c I don't want my Ts to feel like they have to perform just to try out stuff. (Safe place to fail.) So I track: # of sessions I teach, variety of sessions, # who attend, & stories of use in the classrm.
#edtechchat
A3: They should be collecting feedback from teachers, students, and parents! How easy is the teach to implement, how did it improve the students understanding of the content, and are parents able to see how tech is helping their child #edtechchat
A3 Well, I definitely need to take a look at the new EU GDPR law before collecting more personally identifying information. I collect data abt my blog users and library usage stats. #edtechchat
A3 Every T is different. There are a handful of tools that could blend nicely with a T's style. Face-to-face empathy driven conversations focused on teacher goals and student outcomes will provide useful data for integrationists as they partner with classroom Ts. #edtechchat
A3. Since all instruction should lead to student achievement, instructional strategies should be assessed for student success and achievement. We can’t just use tech, we have to be sure students are learning! #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A3) It would be important to ask if the technology supporting expected learning goals? Is the tech being used as designed? How helpful is it to the teacher? #edtechchat#edu5213sbu
A3: @nearpod often supports personalized learning or stations; @Flipgrid for student voice/evidence of learning; @padlet for so many things; robots (Dash, Ozobots, BeeBot) for #coding, #logic, and more. @AdobeSpark for voice/evidence of learning. too many to list. #edtechchat
A3) Data that is collected should be driven from student learning. Data from coaching cycles with teachers and making sure the data is about education. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A3 Edtech coaches must know what tools are being used, what do teachers and students want to learn more about, achievement data so that we can provide support to Ts and Ss. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
It may be difficult, though, for a coach to collect this data. In some cases if you aren't part of the specific school system, there are even legal concerns. #EdTechChat
A3: what tools teachers and students are using in the classroom to see how effective they are...for student growth not teacher evaluation #edtechchat#alplearn
Tools teachers use (for assessments, feedback, collaboration...) and teacher feedback (how helpful was I and how can I better support you). #etcoaches#edtechchat
A3: Level of engagement of the students. Effectiveness of the tech on student learning. Amount of collaboration in the classroom. A lot of "soft" skills. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A3: I talk with Ts abt what they hope will happen when using a particular tool, then we discuss if/how expectations were met & why or why not. Sometimes Ts simply gauge effectiveness based on Ss response and make decisions about if/how to use again. #edtechchat
I like the anecdotal data: stories of what worked and why. That's what gets other Ts interested in trying something new, esp when the story comes from the T who tried the new tool/resource. #edtechchat ^ej
A4: Train on as many tools as possible; find a tech buddy and work through it together; involve parents; stay in-the-know #iTeachDigital#edtechchat NEVER GIVE UP!
Have set policies as a district. Schools within a district should have the same policies. Each school shouldn't be left to figure out how to manage 1:1 technology. #edtechchat
Q5: make you teachers that are not tech savvy feel somewhat prepared and supported. They need to know why and how they can help successfully implement tools. It can be more than just for writing essays!
#edtechchat
A4 Take baby steps. Pilot it at each grade band E, M, & H first. Don't go all in at once.Have a plan but make sure you are willing to be flexible. Change will be needed. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A4- I'd say, "Organize all of your students' passwords and usernames and have them ready to go for August!" There are so many useful programs to be utilized when allowed a 1:1 setting. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
Train a few people really well and have them work to train others. Also, take it slow. Doing too much to quickly will stress out and turn off the less tech inclined Ts. #ETcoaches#Edtechchat
A4 Start small. Choose a handful of tools that will enhance S learning. Have access to plenty of professional resources AND remember the Ss know a thing or two about #tech tools. It is our job to repurpose them for edu. #edtechchat
Have set policies as a district. Schools within a district should have the same policies. Each school shouldn't be left to figure out how to manage 1:1 technology. #edtechchat
A4. We're about to roll out 1:1.
My concerns are giving teachers guidelines for classrm management. AND have a freakin' plan for distribution, help, repair, and collection.
(I really have to have a plan or I'll go crazy.)
#edtechchat
A4: Review your plan, review it again. Be patient bc things will go wrong. Make sure you have plans for devices that don't work out of the box or fail early, & for those that get lost or busted. Communicate! Make sure Ss & parents are clear abt expectations/processes. #edtechchat
A4 Is the 1:1 initiative surrounded by a large plan that includes classroom use, responsible use of social media, access to content, security, replacement and maintenance, the list could go on forever... #EdTechChat
A4) I would make proceedures and behavior expectaions for students a priority. The tech is only good/effective if used properly. Ongoing support and review would be important as well. #edtechchat#edu5213sbu
A4: Do your research... which device will you select? Which software will you use? How will you check in to be sure devices are being properly handled? #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A4) I think it’s important to teach procedures about using the tools slowly at first, especially with younger students, in order to enable their independence in the long run. Buddies or partners at first might be helpful too, #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A4. Start small. Don't do it all at one time. I am not a 1:1 but I couldn't imagine doing it all at one time even though we are a small school #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A4: Review your plan, review it again. Be patient bc things will go wrong. Make sure you have plans for devices that don't work out of the box or fail early, & for those that get lost or busted. Communicate! Make sure Ss & parents are clear abt expectations/processes. #edtechchat
A1 focus on what you want the devices to do in your school? I like to look at the 4 c’s and then intro tools to teachers/students incrementally and with diligence and support. Model and coteach. Create room to fail fast and celebrate growth. Meet then where they are #edtechchat
A 4: How will devices be managed year to year? Will they stay in the classroom or follow the student? Both have their negatives and positives. Have realistic and consistent classroom tech management. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A1 focus on what you want the devices to do in your school? I like to look at the 4 c’s and then intro tools to teachers/students incrementally and with diligence and support. Model and coteach. Create room to fail fast and celebrate growth. Meet then where they are #edtechchat
A4) Be very organized, make sure the students know the routine for keeping the devices charged. I would definitely consult with other schools that have done this already.
#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A4: Make sure you have plans for teacher support: who do they call for what? Have an intro session b4 school starts so Ts can ask questions & review processes: student lost device, student left device at home; device not charged, lost cable, etc. #edtechchat
Create a contract; stay consistent; follow through; demonstrate good digital citizenship; be respectful of the student and their learning process; teach it with procedures just like pencil/paper & sitting! #loveedtech#edtechchat
Solid first day of the PACT Summer Tech Academy at @PJPHS! It's even more organized and comfortable than last year...not to mention just a few min away! Great presentations today on #differentiation & excited for tomorrow about #google || #aoptech#archphilly#edtechchat
A4: Have a tech advisory team that includes Ts and maybe a couple of students. Brainstorm the most ridiculous things that could happen, group them, build an FAQ for the most likely (and plan to update this often), and have a resolution plan for as many as possible. #edtechchat
Do you just use Google Cardboard or do you have some other hardware? Also, did you supply the materials yourself or were they provided by your school / with a grant? Thanks! #edtechchat
In reply to
@MsSophiaTitle, @mrterborg, @s_bearden, @EdTechCoaches
This is huge! It is so easy to let technology be a substitute or crutch and lose its value. Technology should transform lessons not serve lower convenience purposes. #edtechchat
A4c don’t get the cart before the horse, discuss what good formative assessment looks like first, the benefits/cons of digital writing, what blended learning can bring, open minds to different before plopping devices in hands #edtechchat
Having been the front runner with tech in my district I was getting all kinds of calls and decided that didn’t work well for anyone. The tech coordinator came up with a bunch of in services with a few trained individuals and it was much easier. #Edtechchat
Our first ever 1:1 rollout started with a focus on just four tools. Drive, Camera, Drawing Pad, and Explain Everything. We accomplished a lot and learned a great deal from Ss as they requested new tools along the way. #edtechchat
Teachers helping teachers: (1) depts list available tech tools (2) Ts comfortable w/ tool list available periods (3) Ts needing help can reach out. Sometimes friends/dept peers are easier to seek help from #EdTechChat
Q5: make you teachers that are not tech savvy feel somewhat prepared and supported. They need to know why and how they can help successfully implement tools. It can be more than just for writing essays!
#edtechchat
A5: If I think I know a tech tool that a teacher will like, I will sometimes come model a lesson with their class first. Then the T can decide if they want to invest time learning the tool. #edtechchat
A5: Show them your success! Dare them to try a new tool every two weeks! Take them to an #iTeachDigital PD with you! Support them in their learning process!#ETCoaches#edtechchat
A5: Offer plenty of help and be enthusiastic about how it can help benefit the new teacher. Then check back in with that teacher. #edu5213SBU#edtechchat
A5: first, as with any new strategy, model it and show its use. There needs to be a practical use (almost a need). Make sure they aren't just adding a "technological flair" but instead actual relevance. Then, follow up! Don't just make it a one and done training. #edtechchat
A5 I love to create a demo of the technology with the faculty members course outcomes. For example, I made a breakout box for history and took it to the faculty member to play. #edtechchat
A5 Set examples - you should be able to use technology to good effect, while still relating to teachers and students. Be engaging, and show value for the client individually. #EdTechChat
A5: I would schedule a time to co-teach with the teacher. I would share how other people have used the tool along with applicable examples. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A5) share my enthusiasm about the resource and maybe send a student expert in to help facilitate their first run with a new tech strategy! #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A5 Sharing is caring. Share S work, open the classroom for a walk about, send links to helpful tutorials, but most powerful is sharing time to have a conversation to hear about the goals in the classroom and talk through the work flow. #edtechchat
A5: Support them! Have conversations about the tech they want to use or the tech you would like them to try, come up with a plan, observe the lesson (not the very first one, let them get comfortable) and follow up with an open and honest conversation! #edtechchat
A5) PD is a great platform to introduce new tech to any teacher, especially newbies. This provides a safe place to take risks. Follow up or coaching at the individual level is effective too. #edtechchat
First of all there has to be a need. Ask the T what one thing would be helpful. Show the T how to use it and help set up the program. Check back and see if it worked.
#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A5 We are going to hopefully meet with new teachers to discuss our teacher tech badges for next year. We also hope to make a classroom to share info. #edtechchat
A5 again When we do trainings, we make sure they have time to play so that they are comfortable with the technology. We also take time to talk about how to tie the tech into the curriculum - it it makes sense to do so. That helps w/ comfort. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
Getting new teachers involved should include PD and mentoring. New teachers have so much to learn and do. Giving them the help they need will help them become more involved. #edtechchat
A5. I provide 5-15 min lessons every week on different #edtech. I have found that experienced teachers are much more open to using #edtech in the classroom. New teachers need more support in use & classrm management.
#edtechchat
A5 I love to create a demo of the technology with the faculty members course outcomes. For example, I made a breakout box for history and took it to the faculty member to play. #edtechchat
Don't miss the opportunity to share coaching strategies with other #ETCoaches in person at our PLN Annual Membership Meeting at #ISTE18 on Monday, June 25 6-7:15pm McCormick Place W184c All Edtech Coaches and Facilitators are welcome to join us! #edtechchat
A5: I just finished my first year and I think the biggest thing that I would have wanted was training and support. I am all hands on deck but I want to be confident in what I am taking to the classroom and use the tools effectively. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A5. I am looking for this same advice for our teacher prep program as we are going 1:1 this fall. Right now, I think a willingness to fail is important. That is good modeling for preservice teachers too! #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A5: Offer resources and links to privacy/accessibility policies. Do the testing first to ensure the tool is meant for your learners. Take the work off faculty by testing tools before sharing. #edtechchat
A5 Last week our tech dir offered TechCamp. It ran on the first three days of summer vacation. Any interested edu could join to learn from other edus who are using #edtech in the service of learning. There were snacks. #edtechchat
A5: I like it when the tech comes in and models a lesson. This gets the students and myself excited to try the new technology. Win-win.#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A5-b. Last yr's copyright lecture was delivered using Sway, YouTube, and Microsoft Forms to show completion.
Several teachers had never used Sway before. And no one had to listen to me jabber about copyright.
Win-win.
#edtechchat
Does anyone have a common space at work where colleagues gather to swap ideas? Not the mailroom but somewhere more inspirational? #edtechchat#BringTheBandTogether
A5: Host a Show and Tell, have teachers show and tell what tools are working for them. Give them 5 minutes to demonstrate and then move on to the next. #edtechchat
A5: Replace saying "It's easy" or "All you have to do is..." with "I can show you" and "I can help." Provide gentle support and guidance. What comes easy to coaches, might not feel simple to others. #edtechchat
A5. Numbered my last tweet wrong—sorry! I think sharing excitement about a new strategy and its success with students is the most effective way to bring interest and motivation for new and veteran teachers! It is also important to be willing to answer ?s.#ETCoaches#edtechchat
We did this after the @cueinc conference and called it #CUEBits Each person who went gave a 3 minute presentation about something they learned and all teachers were invited or they could watch the recording later. #edtechchat
A6: Provide students with opportunities to build safe, effective digital citizenship skills! Too much nonsense out there for students to not know what is real or fake #edtechchat
We have a very robust PLC program that just successful wrapped up its first yr. The Families as we call them are centered around common themes. They do a great job of connecting within the Family but would like the #AwesomeSauce to spread. #edtechchat
Q6 In terms of technology the one thing I was to accomplish is successfully using Google Classroom. I am hooked on the benefits, but worried about implementing #edtechchat
I use TweetDeck and it helps add the #edtechchat. Another trick is to copy the hashtag at the start of the convo and then paste when you make your post. :)
A6: to successfully incorporate a new #edtechtool I learned this summer for the entire year
(maybe even get someone else to try it with me too!)
#edtechchat

A6 Getting more teachers to take risks. They are afraid they will break something and it can't be fixed. It's okay to break something if it means you are learning. We have people to fix our technology. #ETCoaches#edtechchat
A6:Hmmm, I would like to be able to teach my students (effortlessly), w/ LD's to be able to research like their peers and produce like their peers in the Gen Ed setting.
#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A6: I would love to accomplish using techology in new ways next year. Not just using Google Docs and Google Slide like I have in the past. Finding new and exciting sites for my students to use and learn from. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
A6: I would like to get my students using their 1:1 devices for more activities, instead of the select few programs I have them use their devices for. #edtechchat
A6: IF i could only accomplish one thing, it would be to make sure all my students leave each day with a smile on their faces.
Professionally, to be able to implement all types of learning in my lessons.
#Edtechchat#sbpdchat
A6. My goal for next year is to integrate the ISTE Standards well enough that my preservice teachers make tech integration a natural component of their instructional planning! #ETCoaches#edtechchat
Maybe I'm being tricky, but I tent to ask leading questions before showing someone the solutions. With a little guidance or scaffolding people can figure things out. #EdTechChat
A6: I would like to get my students using their 1:1 devices for more activities, instead of the select few programs I have them use their devices for. #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
Thanks @s_bearden and #edtechchat for inviting the #ETCoaches to participate in this month's Twitter chat. Looking forward to seeing everyone at #ISTE18
Create a free teacher account on Common Sense. They have an awesome scope and sequence and TONS of awesome free lessons. It's a great starting point! https://t.co/mOGevp1RF7#EdTechChat
I teach special education for 4th and 5th grade. I would love some fun and engaging reading comprehension and math sites for them! #edtechchat#edu5213SBU
Yes, I do have google classroom, but I am not familiar with how to use it effortlessly.......I am an OT and between behaviors, therapy, and paperwork, I leave tech on the back burner. I need help to make it easier for me....slow tech learner, right here!#edtechchat#edu5213SBU
#ISTE Standards are GREAT! I look at those and the Future Ready Librarians Framework frequently so I can help support my learners! #edtechchat#iTeachDigital
