Neighborhood public schools are the fertile seedbeds for growing American citizens. They are essential for a thriving democracy and healthy republic. We need them now more than ever. #txed@DianeRavitch@NPEaction@TexasAFT
A1: I feel like creativity is probably more marketable and valued in the workforce today over literacy (other than email communication) but see schools still value (assess) literacy more...always a bit behind. #TxEd
A1: It has got to be close. I still give literacy the slight edge, but with tech the way it is this day and age you can get by w/o literacy skills even. Solving problems will never go away though. #txed
A1-Agree. We are preparing children for jobs that are not even invited yet. We are preparing them for challenges yet seen. Creativity will be needed to work these jobs and face these challenges. #TXed
I feel like we shouldn’t even look at the jobs not invented but look at social and economical problems that are going to emerge. We have political issues that are going to come to play, international diplomacy, environmental issues we haven’t seen/addresses. #txed
A1-Literacy is still an important factor. A life long skill that can be use for learning and for joy. Kids must be given the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills which can help develop creativity. #TXed

Great point! #txed Literacy is a cornerstone! Especially when it comes to learning empathy for others which is needed to be able to solve problems for others.
A1 I agree. I do think literacy is a tool needed for understanding and comprehension, but creativity is needed for presenting ideas, using different means of literacy though. Creativity is using different means of literacy. #whoa#deepthoughts#txed
I think we HAVE to combine the academic field of education with the political field who controls our budgets and so many of our red tape power to move faster. I hope to make this my work! #TxEd
A2: I like using menus with students and teachers to give them some choice. It is a good place to start with creativity I think. Many cannot just jump off and be creative. Giving a little guidance while still providing options is a good start I think. #txed
A2: This chapter taught me the BEST thing that could have happened to me was getting assigned to be the GT teacher for my first 7 years. I learned how to give Ss freedom and let their creativity soar because it was required. Now, let’s do that for EVERY child. #TXed

A2: The atmosphere also plays a huge role. Students have to understand it is OK to take chances. We have to allow failure and make it a teachable moment. #txed
A2b: In a workshop model, giving them a personal study time (now it’s the fancy phrase called Genius Hour) was monumental to my Ss. They did a cookie drive for 1st responders, built things at home, took charge and dug into their learning. I just facilitated. #TXed
I agree totally. All students need a chance to create. It will always surprise you with what you can get out of your students if you give them a chance. #txed
A2 I think creativity is tricky for some. They are not sure how much leeway I will give them, especially in the beginning. Menus are great, collaboration in teams, PBL. #TXed
Kelley is right. Many times students are "stunned" that they have choice (as Kasey talked about). They need to get comfortable with the idea. Ts cannot try once and just decide it didn't work. #txed

A3: One of the most memorable tech trainings I’ve had this year was @edtechqueen showing examples of how her boys did their own individual projects using tech. She’s presenting next week at #DLC2018 and I can’t wait to see more. Definitely give her a follow. #TxEd
A3: This is when not just the student can learn more...the teacher can as well. When they take ownership of their learning great things will happen. #txed
#TXed A3 - I used a choice- learning board for some of my summer learning sessions and the teachers loved it. Giving someone the power to pick their learning is empowering.
A4: This is something I talk to students AND teachers about! Always include it in teacher trainings. Social media is a beautiful tool but you must organize it well - safely and professionally. #txed
A4: I try to keep my social media platforms separate. Twitter+Professional, Facebook=personal. I try very hard to be positive, and if there is any question I will rewrite until I am satisfied. #txed

#TXed A4 - Very important. I follow some basic guidelines. I don’t follow students. I assume all my tweets are being read by someone important and I try to never be rude or sacastic online. Have to show kids how to use this tool.
That’s what I do! I’m even working on dividing my Facebook to build professional relationships on there without having them see all my family pictures from 30 years ago and tags that are out of my control sometimes. #txed
Yes! And how people read your words and think completely differently than you meant it. I had a friend tagging me in really sarcastic posts years and years ago before the tag feature was around and it went straight to your page. #txed
Me too. I’m working with some teachers this year to do our workshop classrooms with more individualized learning based on BOY assessments. I wish you the best of success, Paul! #txed
We have #txlege Senate & House members who do not support #txed. We are tolerating this moral & constitutional violation. This must stop now. We must replace these members in November with public servants who will represent our all children and defend their public education.
A6: The hashtags from A5 are a great start. I love the #txed team as they all have great ideas they share. I also like to use Feedly to scour blogs and websites to find great articles. #txed
Here is a Twitter List I have going of some great Educational Leaders on Twitter. While it is not complete, I add to it from time to time. Give it a follow or just look and add those that interest you. https://t.co/xBrSAcDSEv#txed
Sorry #txed, my Twitter/Internet is going out on me. Just moved and don’t have WiFi set up yet. Look forward to catching up on the last questions! Have a great evening and week 🤓
