I'm not in a classroom or at a school and so will be curious to hear what others have to say. #bfc530 What interests me most is how SEL is built into the day to day of academic study - that it is not some add on.
Morning! I’m a Spec Ed teacher (I have a primary special needs class) so SEL is incorporated right into our daily learning. I have various tools and resources that help too (such as @ZonesOfReg, social stories, and emotions kit, etc) #BFC530#Sped#SpedEd

Starts with the invitation to ALL kids to engage each other in the morning the meeting, to share their lives, to learn to respect each other.

Morning everyone. Our youngest students are focusing on SEL all the time. We are working on incorporating it more deeply as the students age up. #bfc530
I'm not either. I'm an Basic Skills ELA specialist. When I start with a small group, I try to take the first 1-2 minutes to share a greeting and have a brief chat of how the day is going. A mini-morning meeting, if you will. #bfc530
Happy Monday! First day back with the kids after the Holiday Break. Will be doing the #oneword activity with them today as we try get our academic focus back. #bfc530
I’m the Social Emotional Learning Manager at my school and they have invested a full period each day to a seminar class that works on #SEL skills. We also have adopted Grad at Grad objectives for all students to meet by the time they graduate. #bfc530

History makes it easy. I attempt to show nations act like individuals on a larger scale with more dire consequences. Why is there conflict? What are solutions? Can be answered for the battlefield or lunchroom (which is often a battlefield for some students) #bfc530

In our classroom, with my Ks, we spend the latter part of most days focused on SEL...discussions, video clips, role-playing...kids feeling better about themselves and each other! #bfc530
Teaching 6th-graders, I try to discuss situations to prepare them for when emotions from peer pressure can get out of hand, especially when you get embarrassed in front of someone you want to impress. We have had to stop our basketball game at recess due to bad choices. #bfc530
I Social/Emotional learning needs to be integrated everywhere, but the actual discussion is easier to see in social studies classes where students can see its affects in a historical sense. #bfc530
Unless it has changed, it was 35 min each day (M-F) and then just over an hour of Fridays. We did "Mindfulness Mondays," as well as team building, relationship building, time for 1-1 conversations, #geniushour, etc. Set the tone for deep learning. #bfc530

I've been trained in @responsiveclass so I draw on that philosophy during my classes. Our school doesn't have a school-wide program, but we do work on skills & strategies during Advisory blocks. #bfc530
Good morning everyone- new for us this year was a staff book club with a focus on self-regulation. We meet bi-weekly - I love how it has started with us- identifying what our own sources of stress are so that we can be the calm centres our students need. #bfc530
The closest thing we have is our board's "character wheel" I think. But I haven't seen it explicitly used (at HS level at least) just posted around. Although HS Ts certainly teach many of these traits.

We do not have a spesific plan to include, up to us. I'm in HS so we do offer Psychology class & we have a new community service class that teaches many softskills:)
That comes from convos with our students, too...about their actions, as well as our own;. As a T, I want to be part of their community, not above or to the side of it. Modeling how to handle adversity and making mistakes is important. They aren't learning it elsewhere. #bfc530

My prior school did the same. It was during Advisory, and it was a struggle to get everyone to participate/ buy in. They needed the skills though that we practiced. #bfc530

I can’t answer for the other teachers at my school, but in the library, I try to model these skills. Most of my kids are prettying self-aware. When I notice a kid having a tough time, for whatever reason, a quiet conversation & letting them know I’m there for them helps. #bfc530
We don’t have advisory. We have common directed study. I use that time - some colleagues use the time as an extra prep. It is what you make it no matter the format #bfc530

That’s great! Every student needs someone that they feel that deeper connection to and in my experience as a teacher and in my role now that person is often the advisory or seminar teacher. #bfc530

The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
Good morning #bfc530 Michelle from Chesterfield County, VA Our county actually has designated SEL schools that are incorporating an SEL curriculum into daily practice. Teachers receive training & support. I'm new to the county as of 7/18 & am impressed with this offering..
I admit that I am confused at how to best implement SEL on the larger scale. I think it has to start with the student teacher relationship. Any thought on how to build a system? #bfc530

You raise a great point, Christina! There has to be solid by-in and training with the staff to see that this investment in #SEL is worth it. Otherwise, it devolves into "homeroom busywork" and the students see right through it as a waste of their time. #bfc530

Even at the MS & HS levels - a poem, an excerpt. A close read of something socially challenging, emotionally powerful, interpersonally intimidating. Then the discussions. The 'venting'. And our direction toward healthy resolution methods. #bfc530
We have a portion of our report card devoted to Habits of Learning/Life Skills. Grade level rubric used for consistency across classes. And we have narrative comments each term. Our elem schools do too. #bfc530

At our school the seminar period is a full 50 minutes and it’s a for credit course with a curriculum provided by @UmojaCorp. The course focuses on #SEL skills and planning and prep for their postsecondary life. #bfc530

We have advisory, bi-monthly. It is supposed to be for addressing student concerns but often becomes a catch-all for school wide projects rather than small group discussion and community building within the group directed by each group #bfc530

Indeed! We kept our advisory cohort for all 4 years in HS, allowing deep relationships to form. That also led to strong student peer-2-peer relationships, mentoring, and helped teachers respond early to SEL needs of each student via our critical friends meetings. #bfc530

Exactly. I confess to only recently starting this. Pushing into 4 rooms, I am grateful to my 3rd gr teacher who lets me run AM mtgs when I walk in at 8. Dynamic exp. Trying to extend that to my other 3 classes in the mini-mtg way.

We have also started advocacy groups within our houses for all our kids. The cool thing is that ALL of the adults in our school are participating. Strengthening relationships, ensuring that each kid in our school knows that we have their backs, there is power in this. #bfc530
It is 40 minutes. 100% teacher directed, no content instruction. I absolutely love the time to build relationships and model citizenship! We have the same student for 2 years then switch #bfc530

Nice! The beauty of a strong advisory is that it inherently bleeds into everything else...it made out #PBL time much stronger and allowed students to carefully focus on "survival skills" (per https://t.co/28PIQSdoXq) as well as academic connections. #bfc530

Mine too. You also need to make sure that PD has occurred for teachers to understand why this is important for them and for the students. It needs to be built into the school wide mission and vision as just as important as academics. #bfc530

I just did the #responsiveclassroom training this past summer. Amazing experience. Exhausting, but amazing. Coupled with our new Trauma Sensitive Schools initiative, it's been a whole diff kind of prof growth for me this year! Transformative, really.

We have Advisory 3x/wk. Mixed gr 6-8; kids stay w/ me all 3 yrs of ms. We focus on community, relationships, service learning, a lot of SEL goes on here. 8th graders take new 6th graders under their wings. I love this time w/ Ss! #bfc530

It makes a difference. Students I had that switched come back to help with my current students. Such a strong sense of community. We are a 7-12, I get grades 7&8. They come back to mentor the younger kids 🤗 #bfc530
