Steve from Fairfield, CA here for a tiny bit of time before workout!
-
Tonight's topic The "C"eeds of Resilience! We often think of a "C" as average, right? Well, some "C's" are so important!
-
: A few that come to mind: Caring - Creativity - Choice Let's examine each of them. Q1 coming up next
-
-
Q1: As children return to our classrooms how might we initiate the "Caring" that we would love to see in each of them?
-
Q1: Initiate the "caring" we want to see in each of them by MODELING! Welcome them at the front of the school, smile!
-
-
Anyone else getting random error messages?
-
A1. Greeting them, sincere conversations, an awareness of those struggling, and a full court press for acceptance.
-
Anyway, Thomas Mision, PreService Elem Edu T here in Minnesota, what's up
-
A1: caring: stop and listen, really listen, to what they have to say, hi-5s, praise them for small milestones, build esteem.
-
Mine seems to be functioning properly - no error messages or other oddities.
-
A1: show them you really want to get to know them so you can support them and be their champion
-
Mine is having difficulty loading.
-
Mine is a lag, but otherwise ok.
-
I get some random Error Messages whenever I click anything on Twitter
-
A1: slow it down to create meaningful moments with as many students as possible. Stop being so busy that you don't interact
-
A1. Creating an atmosphere of acceptance,of trust, and respect to start with...
-
-
A1 Not sure how do to this in public schools, but every Sun I gave to Keren Ami or tzedakah whenever I went to Sunday school.
-
Mine seems to have stopped, but who knows....
-
Absolutely! How many first days of school does a child actually get? One chance a year! https://t.co/KkuAa8gupP
-
-
A1: slow it down to create meaningful moments with as many students as possible. Stop being so busy that you don't interact
-
A1 Kids need to learn about charity beginning at home. How you first care about others.
-
Yes, to demonstrate caring is one of the first principals in building opportunities for children to care.
-
Teachers get that same "new start" so we need to think about that as we kick off as well.
-
A1: Need to create a safe space for ALL students. & if it's not safe, seeking help from students, staff, coaches to improve
-
A1 We learn about tikkun olam. Changing the world. Maybe ask them what will they do for their small corner?
-
So important to not "wait" for the next day, month, or year. We have NOW!
-
A1: remembering that while tasks are super important, relationships are more important and longer lasting
-
Q2 Can we build "C"reativity? When the mind is able to flow and grow & expand, wonder occurs. https://t.co/asXuft81lT
-
-
A2. I think we build opportunities for creativity by allowing all modalities, giving kids voice and choice, and adding arts!
-
Q2, continued - As children allow themselves to grow, play, learn, they become empowered aware of themselves.
-
Q2: Creativity can thrive and flourish when we allow for Autonomy, Mastery, & Purpose. Check out DRIVE by
-
A2: Key to creativity is setting up a CR where there are multiple right answers & ways to get there/Diff. thinking is valued
-
A2: Ignite their passion and kindle that flame.
-
A2. Building Creativity requires for us to be creative as well. As well, give Ss opportunity to be creative
-
A2 I don't remember much in the way of being allowed to play. We had two recesses a day, but it all seemed perfunctory.
-
Allow time for students to self discover. Student led learning #20%time
-
Q3: "C"hoice an essential element & provides ownership of learning for Students. How can we build more opportunities 4 it?
-
A2: let them just play at recess. Give them a ball. Let them run. Let them discover their talents.
-
BTW....tweeting while building resiliency in my 11yo twins - they're making banana bread for the 1st time. May not survive.
-
A2 Seems like we were expected to play only in certain ways. I never much cared for a lot of play. Involved running around.
-
Agree in importance of play and I, too, recall the afternoon recess that has since disappeared.
-
Q3: Choice is essential! Allow students to have a voice. Involve them in decision making.
-
Yum! I love me some banana bread! https://t.co/MgPehnz0jz
-
-
BTW....tweeting while building resiliency in my 11yo twins - they're making banana bread for the 1st time. May not survive.
-
Play can be sitting reading a book outside.
-
A3 Be open to how different children learn. I felt like my teachers had very little creativity.
-
A3: Assessment that allows students to demonstrate their learning in different ways - rap, essay, poem, presentation, etc.
-
I think "play" has changed to some degree. With STEM we want kids minds to play all the time. https://t.co/tvsT1C6J2A
-
-
A2 I don't remember much in the way of being allowed to play. We had two recesses a day, but it all seemed perfunctory.
-
What I would have preferred. I was told I always had to play with others. Didn't enjoy that much.
-
Add to your PLN! Great ideas for
-
A3: get input into lesson. You provide the framework -heart of lesson, they add the proof/possibilities.
-
I've found design thinking, PBL and Genius Hour all allow for that essential voice and choice.
-
And that is good. Certainly wasn't true when I was growing up.
-
A few more "C"eeds of to consider: Commitment, Critical-Thinking, Communities - Let's go a little deeper!
-
Completely agree!! https://t.co/rePC880yTY
-
-
I've found design thinking, PBL and Genius Hour all allow for that essential voice and choice.
-
Seems like my teachers were more concerned with how well I could fold a piece of paper than if I had any original thoughts.
-
Q4 "C"ommitment - How can we support each child to make a personal commitment to themselves to care for their education?
-
Critical Thinking & Community: Design PBL where students are solving an existing problem in THEIR community.
-
A4. I think goal setting and holding kids accountable for their own learning is a good start.
-
Having Twitter posting problems... 😁
-
I doubt most of participants ever read Dick and Jane, etc. So dull. I don't think they wanted us to learn.
-
I doubt most of participants ever read Dick and Jane, etc. So dull. I don't think they wanted us to learn.
-
A4. Years ago at a PI year 4 schoool I did goal setting with about 100 students - met with them monthly on progress.
-
Art was perfunctory, too.
-
A4 earlier opportunities to see the fun and exciting things that can be done with more education
-
-
I used an exercise where I placed a tiny seed in their hands, to symbolize education, need to care https://t.co/VQYXJqWhnh
-
Sorry guys, taking off waaay to early. G'night!
-
Wondering if I was exposed to more arts because I'm a bit older...?
-
A4: Help students to believe in themselves first - show them they can do it! Be there through the good/not so good times!
-
A4: set growth goals. Goals that are attainable yet growing in educational gains.
-
A4 Find out what they are interested in. Commit to helping them learn more about what they want.
-
A4 Up to us to nurture the kids so that they will want to learn more on their own.
-
I was right there two, and as a kid from the barrio, I always wondered why their shoes were so clean https://t.co/4kFcH6ZGYl
-
-
I doubt most of participants ever read Dick and Jane, etc. So dull. I don't think they wanted us to learn.
-
A4: Ss need to have a goals/plans and be supported in their attainment of those goals by reviewing them often
-
Empower students to return to their communities with the knowledge they have gained! Not to escape but to give back.
-
I was exposed to arts/music/etc. I don't think I am older. 😜
-
Funny you should say that because I grew up on the SE side. That was clearly suburban.
-
Never too old to start teaching the concept of giving back. Great idea!
-
Indeed! And, I think it is up to us to support each of our students in doing so! https://t.co/I3AS0upBFm
-
-
A4: Ss need to have a goals/plans and be supported in their attainment of those goals by reviewing them often
-
I find there is an entire generation here in CA (younger than me) who missed out on the arts.
-
When we moved to suburbs, kids asked if I rowed boat to school. Lake Michigan curves around.
-
Q5 . "C"ritical -Thinking With each day comes new options for students. How do we assist them in making these decisions?
-
A5: We need to give them a fresh start and encouragement every day! Don't hold yesterday against them!
-
I had teacher who gave me only C in Math bc, as she told my mom, since I came from "inner city," I'd be happy
-
Q6 "C"ommunity In class, part of our school, in their neighborhoods- How can we connect our students to communities - belong
-
That is so sad.... Math is easier with music, language is easier with art, drama makes self esteem soar!
-
A5 Tough one. Critical thinking came naturally to me. I realized what made sense from a young age.
-
A5. Critical thinking isn't intuitive. I find sites like Newsela model ways to think differently with informational text.
-
A5 Maybe need to discuss theoretical situations. What would you do if...
-
A5. Also - asking probing questions helps too.
-
A5: Build a classroom community, then reach out as a group to another grade for community expansion and promote RAK.
-
Yes! https://t.co/t8877Hqpuf
-
-
A5: We need to give them a fresh start and encouragement every day! Don't hold yesterday against them!
-
RAK - random acts of kindness
-
A6 You don't segregate for starters. You expose GenEd population with SpEd population. Teach to accept differences
-
When students feel they belong, they feel safe, and learning is more supported. Connect them to all! https://t.co/f89c5rCsWi
-
A5: Interesting Q. Makes me think Ss are never really taught HOW to make decisions before making them, perhaps we should 🤔
-
A6. Sometimes design thinking can tie in communities. So can community service hours at all levels.
-
A4: (joining late!) 1st step in having them care is to have an adult on campus who cares. Nothing will happen without that.
-
Always valuable to tie in community during social studies - and ensuring the subject is taught!
-
Looked at that image again. No kids in wheelchairs. Or with walkers. Where are they?
-
Yes! Sometimes being clear with process truly supports our students. Why keep it a secret? https://t.co/E1ewDLilnS
-
-
A5: Interesting Q. Makes me think Ss are never really taught HOW to make decisions before making them, perhaps we should 🤔
-
A6: internships as part of the school day 👌🏼
-
A5: By creating an environment that encourages risk-taking and a gentle nudge to challenge oneself
-
Sorry I have to go. Thanks for a great chat.
-
Welcome Gina! Great to have you here! https://t.co/TeAMuU6Ydc

A5: By creating an environment that encourages risk-taking and a gentle nudge to challenge oneself
-
I often find that we don't help kids build those skills to talk to adults either. My poor mini's get it from me often.
-
A6: By inviting community members in; by sending Ss out to create solutions to community issues; entrepreneurship
-
Five more "C"eeds of Resilience: Connectedness, Citizenry, Career, College, Communication--Can you name a couple more?
-
What I have been fighting for years now. There's a NIMBY attitude among enough adults. Need to get the kids
-
Yes, I find that I sometimes become the Jiminy Cricket on my son's shoulders. https://t.co/ihAdjYnFaF
