The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
This is tough. I attempt to get our iPad cart so students can work on https://t.co/rpGUkHKgyW when finished. If the cart is not available, I normally treat as a study hall. #bfc530
We find students are taking longer & longer to write tests. What creative ways have you/ your school come up with to deal with this (balance enough time to finish test w/ instructional time)?

I don’t really have an answer for today’s question. We are hosting parent/teacher conferences after school this evening. Busy day ahead! Best wishes to all for an AWESOME Thursday! Peace! #bfc530

For time-on-task testing try some formative exercises: timed writing drills; posted timer writing, help with writing prompts to avoid writing freeze; grouped writing; segmented writing w instructional commercials #bfc530
We have an ongoing creative writing assignment each marking period. 1000+ words that must have dialogue, plot and character development, etc. Students ALWAYS have something to go to when done with a test. That, or google questions to respond to. #bfc530
Not enough time for a student to finish a test ... don’t have this problem ... I don’t give those kinds of assessments ... I do have the ability to give them more time to complete a task that is being used for assessment purposes. #bfc530
Good Morning #bfc530 I was actually up but then I got a delayed opening call and my mind went in another direction then prepping for school. So Im checking in late
Do the same. Always have another activity for students to prep them for the next unit or lesson after every in class assessment if they get done early. At the end of the year, the last assessment is always followed by a survey for the kids to assess my teaching/class #bfc530
Depends on type of test. Standardized/state tests? Ours are relegated to day they are assigned. No wiggle room there. My class assessments? I spread them out during wk. More demo & modeling involved. #bfc530
I give in class writing assignments b/c I want to see their skills, not their parents. I always grade on what they complete rather than if they get in all the paragraphs required. (of course a limited # of sentences isn't good either) #bfc530
At the other end of the spectrum, as we moderate assessments, we have to determine if Ss are struggling due to assessment length/type, content issues, poor preparation, distraction, et al. THEN I have to determine the best, most reasonable course of action in response.

Nail down what’s the Outcome/ Objective of the test.If a test isn’t constructed with this in mind it’s likely to measure unintended things such as time to complete. One assumes the T wants to measure what Ss know & give every opportunity to showcase their knowledge&skills #bfc530
Thanks to the delay, got some time to clean the car, spread some salt, cook some breakfast, eat it slowly. Wished you all could have a morning like this. Im out! #bfc530
I have a wide array of students so I will continuously have students finishing earlier. I developed a Math Menu (choice board) for each unit in which they have to get tic-tac-toe. Kids love the multidisciplinary tasks they have to complete. #BFC530
How do you come to those judgements when there are other possibilities? eg. Feeling unwell (not disclosed at test time), fear of tests and failing, confused by poorly worded questions. Reliability and validity in Assessments, including tests is important. #bfc530
So excited for this week’s NEW Teachonomy Teacher Feature featuring @ChristineBemis2 Check out her story and the AMAZING things she is doing in her classroom! https://t.co/ixRE8eBYXb#bfc530
As a HS math teacher, I’m always asking myself what it is I want to assess (specifically). Those questions come first, they are followed by application questions that utilize multiple skills. If Ss don’t complete those, I still can tell their abilities. #BFC530#Scaffolding
Sorry Karl, I didn’t mean to come across that way. Your statement intrigued me, as it sounded as though your school system requires you to second guess what happened during the Assessment with the Ss. Hence my question. I certainly wasn’t questioning your professionalism. #bfc530
As a Head of Curriculum, I would often ask my faculty heads how the assessment allowed Ss to showcase their very best work and how it could a tool for learning in its own right. #bfc530

Why is it when a student isn’t motivated to learn many teachers automatically assume it is a kid problem. If a company has a product no one is buying they don’t think their customer is broken and try to fix them ... #whatisschool#bfc530#edchat
