The Learning Ladder: Facilitating independence through skills based learning with Charlotte Russell - ... https://t.co/KEpf6pL3G5
surely the only purpose is prepare our students for the life they are living?Prepare them for the future
Q1 multiple purposes are a must-we're not all the same, so education won't serve the same purpose for all
Surely the Purpose of Education can be redefined depending on the needs of the learner and the community.
In centuries of debate, we haven't found one clear purpose for education. Seems unlikely we will now. Maybe we need to accept that
Not going to be able to crack in it 140 characters so I'll say the purpose of education is the change the world
What about when diff people have diff views of what the future is? Pulls young people in many directions
true, but there should be some common goals. Biggest challenge is knowing what the future is.
we are preparing students for jobs that don't exist yet
So long as everyone agrees that our purpose is to improve the lives and futures of children ;-)
sounds pretty wise to me. Still there's the implimentation of this - we only have one government
Schools always have done that - it's not new....
We don't need to be prescriptive about their future, it's about enabling and empowering choice
No worries - seen it Exhausting to constantly think about the 'future' right?
exactly. Key thing is to prepare them for THEIR future, not ours or our idea of it
It does have to serve the same purpose of improving life choices surely?
Not just gov involved though? Teachers will have diff views of their purpose. That diversity's probably a good thing
Who could define that purpose? What I understand the purpose to be might be different to you-who's right?
Prince George just started sch; is the purpose of his ed same as say my P Premium children?
The purpose of education? ... to help students to access a better future
That's the funny thing I find about debate - it's so mixed up with LIFE
yes! More important than jobs, we are preparing them for life. Building character
But surely we can't predict the future? Maybe just focus on knowledge/skills that will serve them well w/ever
but what we see 'improve' to mean could be very different according to context.
I just made that point elsewhere. More important to build character than job skills
Does the government have to give us our purpose?
Good question! I suspect not. It's context dependent!
a1 the purpose will change. It is forever changing shape to reflect the changes in our world.
YES-but we have to be open to all interpretations of 'improvement' not just academia.
good lord no! How about moral purpose?
Ha... sometime I think that they think that ;)
Character's a pretty difficult thing to teach though? I'd settle for helping them to know stuff and think well
But we're not talking about setting individual outcomes,we're talking our objective?
Like this Suzanna (quite poetic) - does it change for the individual too, over time?
I wouldn't say more important, equally important. Folks need jobs :-) But hopefully the two entwine
Purpose? Understand self, others and the world around them. Broad, balanced and relevant to current and future needs.
Depends on the child, but everyone has something that needs work on
Society is made up of individuals - what happens if we forget that in search of an objective?
I believe PoE is: give the children best possible opportunities in life. Sometimes through parent ed too
but you're building skills for the jobs that exist now. Character will mean future skills can be learnt
I never said restricted to academia.I'd love to see my kids learn basic manners & respect
Q2 To ensure all children (and adults) can access any opportunity they wish and achieve their potential.
what do you mean by 'issues'?
Hi Keef, how would you recommend these are developed?
But we don't have to allow that, nobody gave me my purpose. I just decided I wanted to change the world
Absolutely but this needs to be implemented and respected within families & society
Why be put off by something being difficult to teach? So is higher level thinking, or empathy. Still do it.
This is why PoE is defined by society - the community in which it is provided.
Does anyone have a Holocaust Assembly PowerPoint for 11-16s that they are willing to share?
People existed before 'jobs' as we know them existed. Jobs aren't that solid a goal right now
You can still decide what goes on in your classroom though? That's powerful.
Essential skills such as community, communication, observation, measuring, counting, exploration, solving problems...
If objective is personal improvement & success surely that doesn't forget the individual? Or am I naive?
Love that Jo "nobody gave me my purpose. I just decided I wanted to change the world"
That's a narrow (but current) view of education; objectives, targets, outcomes, accountability
Not even sure we *can* teach it! What does it mean? Surely we have diff views of what desirable character is
Do we? Don't we build skills that allow flexibility and encourage lifelong learning?
Q3 talk to the students! What do they want out of their learning? What are their goals? How can I help?
what happens when those knowledge and skills are defunct?
ok - so what type of struggles does education address?
No, I think that's wise... takes a lot of trust from those with political power and responsibility.
wouldn't be. I teach 'em all the same
does it go beyond cognitive?
with a growth mindset children will be in a good position to strive for knowledge and power!
Exactly. To quote (painful) "the government & ofsteds are not in my classroom'
my job to keep their options open
Will that happen in our lifetime? I would argue same skills have been important for a long time
He he. As I said, I may be naive. But I'm fighting ever becoming a cynic :-)
that's where the 'future jobs' thing falls flat
handwriting. Keyboard skills. Programming. Evaluating internet sources
Residential trips can develop community spirit and belonging for pupils in primary schools, find out more: https://t.co/sclESJ3ORl
I'm only 21 and skills and knowledge I need has changed and I learn as I go.
indeed. Before school-job ppl created their own work, found their own niche and learnt by serving
Of course. And we fight that battle if it's not reiterated and taught at home
Seeing people as commodities in a global market place is a popular discourse but a dangerous one https://t.co/wIuoKbwoG3
People existed before 'jobs' as we know them existed. Jobs aren't that solid a goal right now
Sure. But aren't those developments picked up throughout life? Can we teach them in school?
Reality for everyone; need to be aware of need to adapt, accommodate as needs arise.
Good evening , how's it going?
But give pupils a sound knowledge base, ability to communicate well - rest can be added on top
we can furnish them with the ability to keep on learning and critically assess what's going on
a3 to reach purpose of optimising life chances: encouraging growth mindset, providing constant challenge.
sounds like you'd advocate a fossilised list of prescribed skills and knowledge? Not saying that's bad
so schools need to teach English and nothing else?
It can be, but define 'sound knowledge base'?
I'd say that school could be a place that offers more space for this kind of thing.
not ness disagreeing with you. Just questioning
Dear iPad, please stop autocorrecting to Thank you.
What the purpose of education is not - for everyone to know the same stuff. Relevance and adaptability are important.
Knowledge base across a range of subjects. Communication doesn't mean English per se!
I'd maybe add 'for the better'. 😉 https://t.co/zp5dpJmSzB
Not going to be able to crack in it 140 characters so I'll say the purpose of education is the change the world
How do you know when you're on track Suzanna?
the definition can change daily with the needs of the learner/family change. My teaching HAS to follow.
like Wales being champions 😜
I try to give them best of what I know. If they share in all the madness that's in my head, that's good? https://t.co/6aK3b94Iey
a4 control over basic components but one size does not fit all? Too many different factors to address.
At a they talked about 'Engl lit' being the first important 'threshold'
Q4 Is that the government intent? It seems more economy based;produce workers, compete in the global market.
I suppose there needs to be a core framework to hold educators to account, or we risk too much?
A4 Governments have some democratic mandate, teachers don't. So some degree of control is required.
The issue of 'entitlement' seems important to the gvmt, poss in order to ensure country 'does well'
that duty should allow for trust in teaching professionals. Too much of that control = distraction.
It was Laura McInerney who said at ; If we take taxes and children we need accountability
Good point. It's a hell of a gamble on us otherwise, and sadly we often see teacher complacency
Smart phrasing. On a scale of 1 - 10 where 10 is perfect amount of trust in teachers, where are we now?
...some specific periods in history. Basically grounding concepts in subjects
So , how would you go about developing a sense of moral purpose and teamship in a department?
See knowledge organisers or assessment for some ideas
ironically, may be more competitive by teaching risk- taking, resilience, adaptability.
Isn't it hard to teach those things? Could teach something else, but allowed for those?
Remember that 'wahoo' feeling you get on results day?Well that's nothing compared to the wahoo each child feels inside.Thatpurpose
we've even caused teachers to distrust own prof judgment in some cases by pedalling negative rhetoric.
What would your answer be?
Bookings for our school visits being taken for 2016, calendar filling up quickly
Q5 The best measures for me are the pupils own sense of achievement and feeling they've made progress.
Bookings for our school visits being taken for 2016, calendar filling up quickly
...I personally didn't feel that deeply about my grades. They were top grades (A*s) but meant nothing to me
Can you save to promo tweets until after , please? It only happens for one hour a week. Many thanks.
It's difficult to facilitate those skills when constrained by targets and accountability.
So intangible, but I get it. What measures do you discuss with SLT?
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to SLT?
Next lesson resource, anyone know of a video about the hardships of living with someone with addiction?
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to parents?
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to students?
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to government?
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to a neighbour?
children return next day, smiling, eager to learn, anticipating today will be rewarding.
If you achieve those intangibles you often meet the SLT outcomes as a byproduct of enjoyment & engagement.
Grades are important to some students - have you seen work to help those students?
Short answer - you shouldn't have to! https://t.co/EKkfv5GKot
How do you demonstrate the quality of your work to government?
thank you, no chance to proofread ... Just let it spill, look forward to reading yours. This is the best thing about
Oh yes. That's how I stayed sane enough in a KPI heavy corporate job, to save enough to get out :D
Maybe to leaders who are indirectly managed... But teaching tends not to respond well to micromanagement
Why would someone in authority feel the need to micromanage another person? What's happening there?
By 'neighbour' I mean a 'random person in the street' - a tax payer
Q6 nothing better than a child thanking you for believing in them and helping them meet their goals
