#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

We want to hear your thoughts on Badges w 3rd party endorsements. Plz include in your tweets
Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Excited to start this week's
It's happening right now
how do we coordinate endorsements? What does the central/decentralized infrastructure look like?
I'm Noah in Denver. Passionate about credentialing achievement PreK thru life!
I'm Rich and work with professional development for teachers that uses digital badges
Great question Nick! What do you think?
Happy Monday, ! We create PD for educators with digital badges & university credit. Based in Santa Barbara, CA.

Q1: Who and/or what entities might offer valuable 3rd party endorsements for Digital Badges?
A1: Big example could be Google endorses a PD Badge for skills w Drive
A1: Might any person or org endorse a badge? Pros/cons?
I think so, Rich. That said, the *value* of some endorsements will be weightier than others, right?
Say more about that Nick...what kind of Badge would you want to see "Endorsed by LinkedIn" on?
A1: This is an example of how Aurora Public Schools is getting local endorsements for their Badges https://t.co/46wxDTWN01
huge fan of company endorsed 's. modular content, more , ...
Does an endorser need to have earned the badge as well?
Q2: What benefits might there be to endorsed Badges?
Good question! Could be that it depends...
A2: Badges endorsed by a 'trusted' org might carry more acceptance when presented. Nick's example is a good one
A2: I think 's points speak to this question. Some endorsements will add TRUST and VALUE to a Badge
Just got a DM asking what we mean by "Endorsement" cc
An added level of validity. If you can add testimonials it's like a letter of recommendation.
Just like product or political endorsements, I view Badge endorsement as a seal of approval from an Endorser.
BAM! Validity piece is huge, I think. In a way, the endorsement is just as much for the Badge earner as audience
was pondering how to centralize endorsements and badges...
So some of this Summer's playlists from have endorsed Badges that are centralized. Could be good exmpl
Exactly. Lets audience know that badge earner's skills are "in demand" and important.
Looking to industry, the Badges on Trailhead might be another good exmpl of centralized...
my LinkedIn endorsements are a joke, mostly from my open network adds, badge endorsements definitely need context
Ah, gotcha...so are you thinking centralized endorsements will be more valid?
Q3: What will be some of the challenges to endorsed Badges?
A3: One challenge will be the LinkedIn issue that mentions: could turn into a joke
more the idea that an earner has a central place to store and display badges that allows them ownership
creates common credibility platform. Can trace company, school, teacher, prior earner, major leaders etc
A challenge that I hear from businesses I talk to about endorsing Badges is concern about validation and trust...
"Who is validating that the earner deserves the Badge that my company is endorsing?" <== Big Challenge to endorsements
Open badges have an added level of validity (criteria) that LinkedIn doesn't, so could be beneficial?
I agree with this and your thinking on the role of blockchain as it relates to the verifications and trust
Q4: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
multiple credible endorsement types so people working in field & industry leaders can make up for stingy company
A4: One takeaway for me is that we had a lot more lurkers than chatters this week...topic definitely took us in the weeds!
badges = surface level feature, not a product. Product will be the infrastructure or network that coordinates validity
Badge issuers need to communicate why/how THEY are qualified to issue badges in order for companies to support them.
my fault, don't hesitate w/ questions, this is one of most forward thinking 's
This week's chat is a great reminder of the role validity & acceptance play in having badges carry extended value
Thanks to all of our BadgeChatters and Lurkers! I really enjoyed tonight's chat!
Thanks for joining and thanks for YOUR endorsement of the chat:)
*value* agree e.g. from employers / voluntary organisations / charities will carry more weight
Anyone who is a dreamer has credibility
