Hi all, I am a pre-service teacher from Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa!
Hi everyone! Curtis Bourassa pre-service teacher from University of Regina, SK.
Welcome! Thanks for joining us tonight!
Question 1 will be up on deck in 30 sec.
Q1: Who do you think is the report card's intended audience? (parents? students? future schools?) https://t.co/2uRkiw1zSn
I think the report card is for Ss and Ps because it acts as a guide to strengths and targets for the student to strive for.
Good point! I like your thoughts. :) https://t.co/gCo75MwEEd
A1: I believe that the report card in a way can be focused towards all of these. 1) so students can see progress 2)to give
https://t.co/p75Xq8G6Y4
I've been pondering lately, how do you help a child with no interest in helping themselves? I am open to suggestions.
A1: In my years, report cards were geared towards parents. However, I wish I took greater consideration as a student
Yes, yes! Why not have kid participate in the process too!
A1: Last 3-way conference I went to the students are in charge of leading the conversation for report cards. Gives Ss ownership
A1: I feel it can be used for all of the above. It's important for students/parents/schools to see progress over the year(s)
A 1 - The intended audience is most definitely the parents.
Do you believe it should be just the parents involved?
This is great! Student led conferences are so important.
A1: I think it is for all of the above, teachers to know what to keep working on, Ss to identify strengths weaknesses,
A1: parents to know what to help with Ss at home
Let's look at Question 2! Coming up...
. It's good to see. It is the Ss grades. They should be in charge. But it is sad when Ps take over the conversation
A1 : Future Schools and/or BOEs. In today's scene, it seems grades are more often for evaluation and admission than much else.
Q2: How do you prepare for report cards? What does your "report card preparation process” look like? https://t.co/GtIrKA0xKW
Hi! Sorry to join the party late, I'm Sean, a pre-service teacher at
A2: I work in a HS..I just have to click some buttons to post my grades, they are up to date all year
A1:the intended response is the parents, no future teachers truly go back and review cumulative files to gain further info
Hey! Welcome! We are on Q2.
I go back sometimes to see a trend in math grades
IMO report cards are a thing of the past. If we are communicating with parents they serve no real purpose.
Meaning societally. Would love to see students engage with their grades. That involves more classroom engagement.
That may be in a perfect world, but report cards are still required in most districts. Let's do them progressively.
Oh I understand that but I think we put too much effort into them and parents already know what is on it.
A2 : Though I haven't done it, I think it's important to look for trends to ensure that we meet our students needs.
A2: I used to work on them in grade level teams to see how our kids were doing on similar curr. content.
That being said, we need more narrative feedback and less letters/numbers.
Good point! Where are the gaps that we need to fill and work on. :) https://t.co/moHtNJJ6R8
A2 : Though I haven't done it, I think it's important to look for trends to ensure that we meet our students needs.
Agreed! But still have to support new T's to gain insight on how to's.
personally, was not a fan of the numbers on report cards growing up. Letters service much better IMO
For sure. I would suggest and as resources on rethinking grading and reporting.
==>>Q3: What tools and strategies used to document student learning prove most useful during report card preparation?
A2: In my province we don't have a letter grade system, or a percent system. Use 4-point system. Focus what is needed 4 improvement
They could also check out a section in my book as well but that would be shameful of me to mention. ;)
A3: If possible, individual collaboration with each student throughout the year seems beneficial to me
A3 : Formative assessments like exit slips and linoit discussion can help immensely. Can point to a student's understanding
A3: As an encore T at the middle school level we don't get many parents. I like to have a convo about Ss growths & a success
Yep...that's the truth so need to suprt new T's to be equipped to do them so they can take ownership w/Ss. https://t.co/nlRDgjpQjW
In theory I agree, but in HS report cards matter until higher ed finds a better path.
A2: I've started giving more feedback on Google Classroom for the projects we work on, Ss have stopped asking "what's my grade?"
Love that! These are good ideas that will lead to authentic assessment. https://t.co/KCpIpFR3co
A3 : Formative assessments like exit slips and linoit discussion can help immensely. Can point to a student's understanding
A3: Conversing with and discussing subject area can be a good way to assess a student
A3: Student portfolios are common for documenting student learning. Digital portfolios becoming more and more popular.
I like the idea of using portfolios. Great way to have students directly involved. https://t.co/TlAGzFNumY

Lets jump quickly to==>> Q5: How can students be involved in assessing their performance/ contributing to the report card?
A5: Get students to pick assignments/projects that they are proud of.
A5:I give Ss rubrics b4 projects. When done Ss use a Google form w/ image of rubric & score themselves. Ss score group presentations
A5: Give students a short self assessment at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year to show progress
I love self-assessment. Grading their own participation and having an end-of-term teacher-student conference are 2 great ways.
A5 : I love self-assessment. Grading their own participation and having an end-of-term teacher-student conference are 2 great ways.
I need to get better about having those meaningful convos w/ Ss one on one
A5: By the students assessing themselves at the end of the year. It allows them to express their effort given throughout the year
This is great! We don't take enough time to involve Ss in the process.
A5: I teach band and use rubrics for preparation/perf. I will have them rate themselves in a different color than myself and we talk.
This is great! We don't take enough time to involve Ss in the process. https://t.co/7WR1TGYp0q https://t.co/6geRxAsZrY
