Current fave game: Apples to Apples!
Hi #ditchbook ! Happy Thursday! I'm Jen, a MS Sci Teacher and #EdTech Support Specialist in MO. My favorite analog game is Settlers of Catan... digital game is MarioKart...on SNES. fo sho! ;) #classic
A1: I love any games that involve a clicker or phone to answer a question! Means ya have to be paying attention to the screen and as teachers we know who has and hasn't answered the questions! #ditchbook@bedesemsclass
Hi, my name is Walter. I am a sophomore SESS major at #gccedu. I am excited to participate in the #ditchbook chat tonight in conjunction with the #pstpln challenge! My favorite game is Stratego!
Tweeting to #ditchbook tonight from the phone in the car (not driving!).
My wife's school just won first tennis sectional championship in school history. Impromptu pep rally in the courthouse square as they came back. Love small schools!
Hey #Ditchbook! My name is Nathan Perry and I teach 8th grade US History just outside of KC, MO. My favorite game is Monopoly Deal or Exploding Kittens!
A1: Games are all about a challenge for me. Is it challenging? Does it make me crave more? IF so- I am motivated to push forward and OWN that game/lesson whatevs. Students do the same! What can we do to help boost inquiry? #ditchbook
A1 Gamification keeps kids engaged! Kids (and adults) love the added elements of gameplay in the classroom!
๐ Point scoring
โน Competition
โ Rules
๐ Badges
It's fun! #ditchbookhttps://t.co/U0C8zd5Ffl
A1: #ditchbook Games foster engagement through healthy friendly competition and/or collaboration! Ss learn problem solving and teamwork skills as well as the content.
#ditchbook In response to Q1, I think games that involve critical thinking and a multitude of senses can be useful toward engagement. Do you think the games should be geared toward technology or stay tech free?
Good evening, #Ditchbook! Adrian from SoCal here โ love teaching and games! The #PSOne defined my teen years โ so totally looking forward to the @PlayStation#Classic! ๐๐ป
A1: Games provide a medium that transforms critical thinking, strategy, and cooperative play and reveals the truth that ANYONE can win, regardless of test scores. #ditchbook
#ditchbook My Foundations of Teaching class (shoutout to @DrJMChapman) did a breakout game today based off of a video powerpoint we watched, and it was a fun way to solidify the information we got from the video!
A1: Game elements such as ways Ss can power up or level up, the unexpected curveball, some constraints, and the winning of points or money to spend in the "game" are always popular elements. #DitchBook
A1. @mrmatera puts it beautifully: โTheme, Teams, & Tasks.โ
A good THEME sets the stage with a narrative backdrop (aliens, zombies, superheroes, etc.).
TEAMS give a friendly sense of competition.
And all teams work on TASKS simultaneously to get the highest score.
#Ditchbook
A2: Gamification makes a lesson different and innovative by allowing students to use logic and problem solving to understand a lecture that might otherwise be boring. #Ditchbook
A2: I donโt think it always makes it innovative.. Itโs different because the students are expecting it. Itโs different because you are making the experience real for them by making it a challenge. Challenges help students grow into critical thinkers. #ditchbook
A2: It's just automatically more fun. The word "game" even will lift the heads of the students who are dozing off! Competition plays a big part too! Helps make the lesson more engaging right off the bat. #ditchbook@bedesemsclass
Games are awesome for learning!
Check out this @greatbigstory video about the learning power of games ...

Honored to be interviewed to talk about Clash of Clans's effect on my classroom!
#ditchbook
A2: By incorporating elements of games Ss love, Ts can push the boundaries on lesson design and move into the realm of creating experiences. This makes it very different and innovative. #DitchBook
#ditchbook A2 I think gamification adds another dynamic to the classroom by keeping the students engaged and alert due to the change of pace. It calls their attention and requires them to test their knowledge while being competitive.

#ditchbook
#ditchbook Gamification can often help the students remember information more than a normal lesson would because it attaches the information to a fun memory. it also requires collaboration which brings different ideas and viewpoints into play.
A1: Games can boost engagement in class by taking a break from the repetitive methods of the standard classroom. It greatly boosts cooperation when working with teammates, and a friendly competitive spirit will likely be displayed by students. #ditchbook
A2- Ss have a purpose and are on a mission to solve the game. I love how gamfication fits different personalities (Socialisers, Explorers, Achievers, & Killers)
#DitchBook
Gamification doesn't make lessons better. After all, notification badges on your iPhone are a type of gamification. Keeping score alone doesn't enrich learning.
Being more thoughtful about the constraints your students need (and one's they don't) is more important #ditchbook
A2 - Gamification allows students to work collaboratively in an active, engaging, competitive environment. Similarly, students can earn badges. #ditchbook
A2 Students are used to going to class, sitting through a lecture and doing worksheets. When you use a game, students are surprised at how the class is being run for the day and are excited for what is to come next. #ditchbook
A2: Gamification allows students to be creative and work problem-solving skills. Students take an active role in their learning and get to immerse themselves in the content. #ditchbook
A2: We always talk about meeting kids "where they are" with our instruction. Since they play games, we can turn to games to make lessons innovative. Make the kids come up with ways to gamify the lesson to get them even more involved! #ditchbook
Going back to Q1 the features that shine for me are improvisation and collaboration. Too many edtech gamification tools focus on simply adding points. The best games are ones without leaderboards, IMO #ditchbook
A2: I think it's the collabortive piece that makes gameification work. Ss love to both work with (team) and/or have competition with peers. The natural tendency to not want to let down a team or to "win" lends itself to the success of gameification #ditchbook
A2. Narrative sparks the imagination. Teamwork inspires collaboration and shared commitment to achieve. And competition lights a fire to outplay your rivals to earn bragging rights! #Ditchbook
It speaks to kids, plain and simply. When kids are bored theyโre detached, when theyโre detached thereโs no learning happening. While not easy, I have this conversation almost daily with @AlanToddWHS โ heโll come around, Iโm investing everything Iโve got into that! #Ditchbook
#ditchbook one of my friends told me that one time their assignment was to make up a game to teach the class that was related to the topic they were learning!
A1: There are countless skills that students can develop through game playing (e.g., critical thinking skills, creativity, teamwork, and good sportsmanship). It's a win-win for both teachers and Ss.
Teachers get engagement
Students get to play fun games
#ditchbook#edchat
A2: It makes S's explore, learn more than the minimum requirements, and learn to try without fear of failure. It means more than just a "learning target" to them. #DitchBook
Hi I'm Priscilla from NJ! I teach Tech, STEM, & GiftedEd grades 1-4. One of my fav games is the daily @set_game just introduced it to my new 3td grade group. #Ditchbook
Hi, everyone! My name is Rachel Rowland and I am a freshman at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. I'm majoring in Pre-K - 4 Early Education and can't wait to teach in my own classroom. This is my first twitter chat and I am eager to learn and share! #pstpln#ditchbook
A2: Gamification infuses lessons with intrigue and allows Ss to perceive content in a manner that delightfully challenges their expectations in how they expect to encounter learning. #ditchbook
A3- Use Google Sheets to create an ongoing leaderboard.
Use that leaderboard to play games like @quizizz and @GetKahoot to help ss stay motivate because they are not reaching for the high score but beating another ss based on the leader board. ex- #6 plays #23 for more #DitchBook
A3: There are lots of ways/tools for this, but it depends some on your theme. I am doing a Marvel's Agents of Shield theme, so side missions for agents will be in the form of QR codes all over campus. Sneaky ways to get learning in outside of class time. :) #DitchBook
For every one teacher I know crafting an 'experience' for learners, I can find a dozen putting up Kahoot. When we #ditchbook let's ditch the old ways along with it
After a good mathematical discussion, we can determine if itโs better to keep your original door or switch. Itโs not a guarantee but playing the odds #Ditchbook
#ditchbook My personal favorite tool is Kahoot! We use it a lot in my college classes as a way to test our knowledge. Also, the anonymity of it allows students to freely answer without fear of judgement.
Actually replaced a test with a scavenger hunt. I loved it. The kids enjoyed it. An admin did an observation during the hunt and gave it two thumbs up! #ditchbook
Must teach Ss these qualities & practice them. Even as adults we can be obsessed with winning over learning. I wonder how Ss would define โhealthy competitionโ?-great lesson idea #ditchbook

Q3: I've even used Google Classroom "Question" assignments and had Ss reply to their favorite peer responses with "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner". Student with the highest votes wins #ditchbook

A3: I love to use @quizlet for individual studying and interactive methods of testing yourself. Also, there are many games to use in a group setting as a review for a test to engage students in reviewing for exams. #ditchbook
I agree with you, why not use markers and the white board to as accessories for gamification and student engagement. Thank you for pointing this out #ditchbook
A3: I use Slides to create games such as a "Price Is Right" game for the metric system, Use Drawings to make Bingo Boards, And Forms to create photo scavenger hunts! #GoogleGames#ditchbook
A4- I love @mrmatera
book, website, and podcast!
I love going to game stores or playing games I always get ideas collaborating with friends.
#DitchBook
@jmattmiller: 'GAMIFICATION -- How can you bring elements of games to class?
Let's chat -- and share resources and ideas -- in tonight's #DitchBook chat!
7pm PDT / 8pm MDT / 9pm CDT / 10pm EDT ... A fast and furious โฆ https://t.co/Q47NYl2zQq, see more https://t.co/Xk6Q2RVWNu
A3: You can also use @googleearth for scavenger hunts or @nearpod to great effect since it is a versatile platform! So many awesome possibilities! #ditchbook
A4: Some resources that help us make gamification creative and hands-on for students include quizlet live and mystery skype. (shhoutout to @baileyhenson_ed) #Ditchbook
Looking for more of these! Love the ones I have in quizlet and kahoot, but would love to try some escape rooms and breakouts. @EduCaptAmerica led a fantastic session on those at a conference! #Ditchbook
Q4: I had students last year who wanted to make their own badges for tasks they completed, to encourage higher-performance and competition with the other classes #ditchbook
I like to call this "ninja teaching". The kids think it's just a fun game and don't realize I'm collecting very authentic data on their learning #ditchbook

A4 Have the students help you with the creativity! Plan a game one day. Make the rules and how it will work. Then play it the next day! Also the other teachers! Your best resource is human beings! #ditchbook
I once replaced tests and marks with a points system. The overall grade on report card would reflect the amount of points the students received. #ditchbook

A2: Add the word "game" & it's on! My Ss love to work together & compete. Throw in a theme & some pirate hooks & it's an all out learning experience! Hint hint I have one coming up! #Ditchbook
#ditchbook A4 I do not actually know many games other than Kahoot because I did not experience gamification in my high school classes. However, I did hear of one teacher who had his/her students create their own games. I am curious about other gaming options though!
Hello everyone! Iโm Marcia Carrillo, from Atwater CA, Central Valley near Fresno; (2 hours from the beach ๐ข) Induction Mentor/Coordinator #ditchbook
#ditchbook A4 Split the classroom into two sides who compete against each other in an almost jeopardy game focusing on class content and as an incentive the winning team may even receive bonus points.
A4: Well, any tool can be used, depending on your game "plan" and desired outcomes. I like Google Slides (for most everything) , @flipgrid@RecapThat@gimkit , QR codes, @AdobeSpark , @RWTnow (trading card lesson), and more! #DitchBook
