Certainly a debate between coaches on our own staff. With how good DL are with their hands, I struggle telling my kids to get their shoulder involved too much. Fit hands first. #hogfbchat
I don’t mean to make him blush but I have to give @CoachShiffman a huge shout out for the unreal turn around he led in his first year as a HC! Well done sir... #hogfbchat
My pleasure Coach and I know the other moderators feel the same way. At 58 & 30 years into it - it is time to pay it forward like those that mentored me -when I though passing was cool - LMAO #hogfbchat

Pre #hogfbchat the wife & I got some fried seafood in a close town.
Wife asked what kind of fish was in one basket, lady behind counter says "Well... they TELL me it's catfish but idk"
Me:
A1. Not really. But we made it work. As far as OL goes... once the five are set. They are never touched. They are only OL men. To much coaching goes on between drives for them to be on the field other than emergency situations. #hogfbchat
A1 we were really thin up front we had a lot of guys playing a lot of football on the line. By the end of the season we tried to trim that down a little bit I started a freshman at LT the last few games of year #hogfbchat
No. I had 3-4 that only played OL but also had 3-4 that played both ways. DL coach and myself would talk every week about how we would do rotations to keep everyone fresh. #hogfbchat
A1: we didn’t. We were one of the smallest 4a’s in the state. Moving to 3a next year and numbers will be up should be more 2 platoon next year! #hogfbchat
A1. We did not. Dressed between 25-30 kids for most varsity games. Only had 6 varsity O-linemen the whole season. Had to use some quicker FB/TE type guys on the D-line to keep OL healthy. #hogfbchat
A1 #hogfbchat We ended up there, but didn't start out that way. Ended up allowing to get a ton of quality reps for the young guys who will be leading the way next year
A1: We didn’t unfortunately. Our total numbers were around 45, 9-12. Up from the 25 the year before I took this gig. Would love to be able to eventually platoon. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT RhodesFootball: I don’t mean to make him blush but I have to give CoachShiffman a huge shout out for the unreal turn around he led in his first year as a HC! Well done sir... #hogfbchathttps://t.co/nbeX6RXaJk
A1: Yes and no. Starters on the OL were subs on the DL and visa-versa. Me and our OL coach had a good rapport about who was in and who we each needed at certain times. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1: guards played OL only. Center and both tackles rotated with others on DL. They we 2/3 players on Defense and all the time on offense. DL coach rotated well.
A1. Worked at a smaller private school this year and for the most part we two platooned the OL/DL. I worked with 7 guys on the OL and two of them rotated in on the DL at times. #hogfbchat
A1 -We went all summer with guys training both ways and drafted after camp. With the exception of a few snaps we stayed two platoon all year #hogfbchat
A1: Full 2 platoon, but 2-3 kids will get a few snaps on both sides. Practice 10-12 together; 13 paid varsity coaches...all varsity asst also coach position on JV #hogfbchat
I don’t mean to make him blush but I have to give @CoachShiffman a huge shout out for the unreal turn around he led in his first year as a HC! Well done sir... #hogfbchat
A1: we had decent numbers early but our DL has a high rotation which includes some of our OL guys. Good rotation by our OL/DL coach worked just as well as 2 Platoon
#hogfbchat
A1: we two platooned some guys, but injuries didn’t allow. Had maybe 6 guys that practiced OL all time and rest would switch back and forth. Had some 2-way starters, so developed some younger guys in that 6. #hogfbchat
A1: actually at the beginning of the summer we had a ton of bodies, unfortunately injuries and things outside of our control limited those numbers. Ended up moving our top TE to RG and he did a great job #hogfbchat
I am in college now, but while in HS it was difficult to 2 platoon. Sometimes the best player at 70% is better than the other guy at 100% be smart and sub at optimal times. #hogfbchat
A1: Yes. We divide the kids after their freshman season into either an offensive or defensive position. Majority of kids play that position the rest of their HS career #hogfbchat
A1 Did not. By the end of the year a few younger guys developed enough to where we could let a couple guys take more defensive reps situationally. #hogfbchat
Danny Allan, Lecanto High School, Florida checking in. We tried to two platoon the best we could. It led to a whole lot of Sophomores playing and making a whole lot of Sophomore mistakes. #hogfbchat
A1: We tried. Really tried. And the impact was huge when we were able to. But alas, low participation & a few injuries kept us from being able to fully platoon our line #hogfbchat
A1: Coached here for 17 years and only was able to two platoon a handful of times, during our best years OL & DL were playing one way. Seems to be more line type kids in rural woods I guess. 28 players this year at 2A school 1 or 2 players only -1 way #Hogfbchat
A1: We two platooned with the exception of about 3 guys who were just too good to take off the field. It made a huge difference and we want to eventually go full two platoon #hogfbchat
A1) #hogfbchat we were able to go 1way across the board on O and D line this year. Was very beneficial took over the second half in multiple games on both sides.
We try and find the strength of certain players and personnel certain plays or schemes to fit them! When you have playmakers you have to find a way to use them. #hogfbchat
A1. Dream of a day when we can platoon. So much we could teach if we just could focus on one side of the ball. All my hogs played both ways. #hogfbchat
Sorry I’m late! Robert Ortiz, OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator at Mount Miguel HS in beautiful San Diego, CA. Your favorite coach’s favorite coach #hogfbchat
A1: we two platooned with the exception of offensive tackle / de who started and played both ways. Linemen are a hot commodity, every one has guys that can run and catch. #hogfbchat
We’re large enough to two platoon. Usually we have a standard 5 guys with maybe 2 to rotate in strictly on O-Line. Try to take best 5 lineman in general for OLine. #hogfbchat
The #hogfbchat is a great way to expand your Professional Learning Network! Be sure to follow your fellow coaches! Spreading knowledge about the most important position in the game of Football. The Offensive Line!
A1 had some injuries/other issues that let a frosh get tons of quality reps. Once we were at full strength he really gave us some versatility match up wise. #hogfbchat
A1: yes, had to pray to stay healthy at times but @7state7 does a great job keeping our guys healthy and gets those guys ready for a long season in our Champions Camp over the summer and offseason before that #hogfbchat
A1) i wish. When I took over the job in June we didn’t have enough to play the season. Recruited the hallways to 21 players and we made it all season. #hogfbchat
A1: No, we do not have the numbers to 2 platoon. We had mostly two-way players. Interesting topic, though, as I'd love to get some guys on one side of the ball and get a ton of reps early. #hogfbchat
A1: had about 6-7 guys that played. Moved a DL over to play tackle early in the year. Only graduating 1 starter. He was only one to play meaningful snap b4 this year. Had a Fr. start at RT. #hogfbchat
A1: Yes, But we had a couple skill guys play both sides. Had ‘Offense only’ practice while defense was doing Indy/Inside/Team. We would do some Indy, but it was mostly cleaning up plays/going over protections and film. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A-1: Yes, usually carry about 10-13 OL. Defense has their pick 1st. Then we build an oline after that. Works out. We have several packages that we bring in best DL, and run some heavy sets.
A1: had about 6-7 guys that played. Moved a DL over to play tackle early in the year. Only graduating 1 starter. He was only one to play meaningful snap b4 this year. Had a Fr. start at RT. #hogfbchat
Been in situations in the past where we should have 2 platooned up front but didn't. Some guys aren't built mentally or physically to handle it and play at a high level on both sides #hogfbchat
A1: 4 out of 5 were O guys only. RT spot was held down by our best player until others made it back from injury. Had roughly 40 total kids on team so we're lucky. #hogfbchat
A1: We had Varsity and Sophs practice together for 2 platoons. It was a good way to get the lower level to push themselves to be Varsity level and keep Varsity honest and hardworking #hogfbchat
A1 cont) while I would prefer to two platoon, and did at Murrieta Valley last year, some schools just don’t have the numbers. Forced me to maximize my time and definitely helped me improve as a coach. #HogFBChat
A1: We have not been able to 2 platoon the past 2 years I've been where I'm at. We may be able to for the majority of OL next year. I really like to keep my C off of defense but sometimes you have to roll with the best 5 on offense #hogfbchat#mtzmade
A2 we had a few guys get hurt we lost our C about 5-6 weeks in had to do some shuffling. In game me and my right hand @GrizzlyBeard78 worked well spotting and getting guys out who were struggling #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1 had a Husker d-line recruit at right tackle, and a probable walk on at left tackle. All others played one way. Couldn't keep the dudes off the field
A2: Unless someone got hurt or played aweful did not substitue! Guys wanted to play the whole game and couldnt say no! Only big sub all year was TE having to bump to Tackle because of poor play #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat we were lucky enough that only time we did substitutes this season was in blow out wins and a handful of minor dings and precautionary removals.
A2. Didn't have much of a chance for substitution. Had a few games where we only had 6 dressed. Injury bug plus low numbers hurt this year. A lot of tough it out from the big guys. #hogfbchat
A2 Triage, basically? 😉 Had 6 or 7 guys we were comfortable with getting game reps. A lot of shuffling around depending on who we had to replace. #hogfbchat
A2. We were pretty thin experience-wise this year, so substitutions weren't top priority. Made sure the top 7-8 played in non-district. Usually every 3rd series of a half I would make a substitution. #hogfbchat
A2 I like to have a C, G, and T ready at all times as back ups that can play... like to have an 8 man rotation... but in a perfect world I’d have 10 dudes that can play #hogfbchat
a2 #hogfbchat Only as needed. Tough to gel as a unit if it isn't the same guys out there all the time. Injuries change the game, but tried to stay away from it otherwise
A2: not much subbing went on. But when it did, it was usually due to a bad snap so I would move the C to G, bump a G to T and move the T to C. Welcome to 3A Oklahoma football #hogfbchat
Our depth made subbing very difficult. We only at times had 5 Varsity OL... moved two freshman up and played most of our games without any changes. Lost starting C with 3 games left and have a freshman thrown into fire and battle! #hogfbchat
A2: try not to sub since prefer to have those guys know each other. Only sub if injury or getting beat bad. However did sub this year a bit switching series and didn’t do well. #hogfbchat
A2: I switched out my RT each series to try and give them a breather. Both started on defense. About the same skill on offense. Had about 1 backup at guard, center and tackle. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_VanHorn: A1: we two platooned with the exception of offensive tackle / de who started and played both ways. Linemen are a hot commodity, every one has guys that can run and catch. #hogfbchat
Tried to keep the 5 in the whole game. Had 2-3 guys that could come in for guys that needed a rest after playing defense. Sometimes i would leave that guy in especially if the starter was more important defensively. All depended on the situation. #hogfbchat
A2: We try to not tinker - in other words let them grow accustom to each other's movements and techniques - they got to be a tight knit group up there. If we are subbing a player - we had better be doing it in practice as well #hogfbchat
A2: If any of the big guys needed a break they got it during KO, KOR, and defense for the most part. There was such a big drop-off from our 1s to 2s that we needed them to do their best to be on the field for offense #hogfbchat
A2: We were young up front and only had 8 OL. At times, we only took 6 to a game. I had a good SO that was my swing guy and played at all spots. If one went down, he slid right in and played well. #hogfbchat
A2 well, we only had 6 OL this year on varsity, but our guards and centers knew all the interior spots, our tackles new the guard spots as well, and we had one kid who knew all five. Also we had a LB who played FB/H on offense that we could put a 50 in we needed him. #hogfbchat
A2: had to shuffle a bit sometimes. Made for a rough scout team, especially when I had to play center with @MrTroxel. In game wasn’t bad, subbed when necessary and thankfully we were in decent shape #hogfbchat
We try our best to play the best 5. Particularly this year, we have a very young talented Sophmore class that through out the season got better. We started a Fresh, and 3 Sophs throughout the year. #hogfbchat
Q2. We rotated very little. A series or two a game we would rotate guards. We did run more unbalanced and extra OL packages than ever before which did add to experience for our young guys. (Shout out @CoachFreitag) #hogfbchat
A2: We rotated 7 OL at the beginning of the season as many as 4 of them played DL so it helped keep everybody fresh at times. Made sure we had somebody to rotate in at each spot at any given point. #hogfbchat#mtzmade
Early in the year we play up to 8-9 guys in each game. Each got a series or two. We trimmed it down as the year went on and played best 6-7 guys. #hogfbchat
A2. Only having 7 main OL guys I tried to cross train as much as possible. So with the exception of my LT everyone else played meaningful snaps at all other spots. 4 guys will return next year and can play any spot up front. Should be a fun group. #hogfbchat
A2: From the pressbox made substitutions through HBC (which were very few) - at the end of blow out games I came down and coached up young guys from SL. #hogfbchat
With players going both ways, myself and the dline coach created a rotation to get kids off the field. Rotated about 7 total on oline. Kids knew rotation. Takes a ton of communication #hogfbchat
A2: we were lucky enough to not have to sub a lot up front our best were our best and seniors. When we had to in game it was usually due to injury and it was next man up mentality. Had some sophs step in and play some major minutes late in season. #hogfbchat
A2 was really hard to keep the same 5 from week to week, injuries and other things that popped up. Sucked at the time but also helped our kids adjust to adversity. Plus, valuable experience for the kids we get back. #hogfbchat
A2: Didn't sub much on the OL st all. Rotated an OL sub on the DL occasionally. Some drop off from starter to our back ups and thankfully stayed pretty healthy all season. #hogfbchat
Had 2 two way starters and rested them as needed, off-season and conditioning made it easy for guys to play both ways and depth helped in rotating #HogFBChat
A2: We had our 5 starters and a couple guys who were for emergency use only. The years where we have those five and two more that can play...those are good years. So short answer....we um, we didn't sub a lot. #hogfbchat
A2: We had 3 out of our 5 go both ways. They played Oline all game and in a perfect world the 3 guys that went both ways, rotated every other defensive series. Not always the case with injuries #hogfbchat
A2: we had predetermined lineups based on position depth that we worked on in practice. If we knew it wouldn't disturb continuity with the offense, we would rotate a kid in and put kids in new places. This was to plan ahead for injuries during playoffs #hogfbchat
A2: Don’t like too; O-Line takes synergy to run smoothly. Our O-Line usually only played one way and stayed in the game unless injured or making mental errors #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat we were blessed with health and didn't need to sub very much. Since I am Co DL, I was able to convince our DC to let me use the dudes more on O since we run a 3-4
A2: always ask "next guy" to be ready to go at any OL position. More like a 6th man. Maybe was exception at center, since QB-center exchange is too important. Lost 1 game b/c starting QB AND Center came out 1 play & next play was a turnover, on the goal line. #ouch#hogfbchat
A2: Our C and RG could play any position on the line, this allowed us to plug and play. We also had a reliable 6th man to help when we got gimpy down the stretch. #hogfbchat
A2 #hogfbchat
Our OL coach had 6-7 guys he could rotate, with a "core" of guys who were always on.
Rotators came on as DL starters got fatigued, or injuries that come from trenches. Thought he did well with it, & he always had reasons behind it- I'd pick his brain about it often
A2: Our offensive line didn't sub too much. They are well conditioned for our no-huddle offense. Especially when we lost a senior for the season in game 7. #hogfbchat
A2: I go week 2 week. Competition is VERY important. Guy has a bad game or bad week of practice then I will give the next man a shot. Live in fear of complacency.#hogfbchat
A2: Numbers didn't allow for much. Kids had to know a couple of different spots on the line. Had to pull up a JV center before a JV game cuz V guy went down in walk-thru. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A2: all 9 guys who might see varsity actioned played all positions in practice. "Shuffle the deck" approach. Made game time easy to "plug and play".
A2 injuries destroyed any potential cohesiveness by our o line this year. Moved our Y to T in week 5 and boy a little better but had to rob peter to pay Paul. #hogfbchat
A2) We don't really substitute very much. Try to determine the 5 best w/ a TE and roll with them consistently to build continuity. Of course we like to have 1 or 2 backups that can plug in at different spots but as far as just subbing in the middle of a game... nah #hogfbchat
Q2: A few key guys had to learn multiple positions. Also, we created personnel groups along the OL that were not necessarily formation dependent.
#hogfbchat
A2) Our center was the only full time two way guy, I subbed him on D. Couldn't really afford to sub him on O. The others were guys having a rough night. #hogfbchat
A2 we only had about 7 guys I trusted to play on OL tried stick with 5 starters unless injury or game was decided. Did sub a few times to give guys a rest on long drives. #hogfbchat
A2-Mostly subbed because of a helmet coming off. I like giving my guys as much game reps as we can. If I felt like a kid early could battle for a spot I would give him an opportunity to prove it in game situations. #hogfbchat
A2: TBH, we didn’t unless we had injury or close out a blowout...pretty much stuck with the same 5 all season. Once playoffs began, started developing a large freshman as a potential 6th, but didn’t play long enough to get him fully ready #hogfbchat
A2 had a frosh get reps at C, G, & T. Knew all the concepts well and was kind of our utility guy. Could plug him in confidently wherever by week 9. Really made our jobs easier as coaches. #hogfbchat
A2: OL gets rested on defense. Injuries forced us to shuffle guys around ended up having a backup TE having to finish a game at guard without ever playing or practicing there. By the time season was over he had started at both G and T #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A2 we were blessed with health this year, didn't have to worry about it much. Had a great "team first" Senior that could spell our tackles when they got tired from going both ways
A2: We have multiple guys who practice snaping. We have one sub who can play without us going in full meltdown. We don't have enough to play JV. #HOGFBCHAT
yes, though easier said than done depending on who is rotating and who isn't, in addition to the number of guys you have to work with. Would love for us to add the end zone shot to our Hudl package next fall #hogfbchat
A2: We had some guys that could rotate on both the O & D lines to keep each other fresh, had enough confidence in them that I let them rotate freely #hogfbchat
A2: would do a lot of shuffling. Have a sheet with who goes where in case any one of the five get dinged. All of our guys know they have to be able to play anywhere at any time. #hogfbchat
A2: this year’s group had the most depth of any group we’ve had in the past. Had a couple guys step in and spot start throughout the season due to injuries. Had our 5 starters, and another 3 get significant game experience. As well as rolling 2 H-Backs this year. #hogfbchat
A2: Built some good depth in the spring. Was a battle of intensity. Put someone in the ground or stand by me. Hoping 5 returners take pride in staying in this year but if not...
#Hogfbchat
A2: tried to keep them at the same spots and were fortunate that we didn't have to shuffle around but a few times. Mostly it would be sliding a G to C for an injury, or sliding a T to G. Didn't have to flip sides. Right side stayed healthy #hogfbchat
Always practice with 2 huddles and multiple TE's during our inside run periods. If we don't have many TE's, we use backup Tackles, so we are always developing 12-14 guys with reps on our base runs. Invaluable. #hogfbchat
A2- Did not need to sub a ton this year but when we did, #2 at that spot was ready because of the two platoon. Had to deal with a few injuries this year and they stepped up well. #hogfbchat
A2. Plenty of injuries so it was who was healthy that week and your not coming out... lost our starting RT in preseason for 8 weeks and it just snow balled from there... 15 players out just for one week! #hogfbchat
A2) OL coach (also HC) had his backup interior and backup exterior near him at all times. Any issues and he could get them in as needed. If it was a substitution for a series, we just have the starter replace the backup in the rotation #hogfbchat
A2: Didn’t sub a whole lot. Usually 4th quarter in games or when nagging injuries came up. My two rotation guys (sophomore and Freshman Guards) got 2 starts and even alternated series in a playoff game. They balled out too. #hogfbchat
Center & QB are the two positions we work really hard at to play only on Offense for obvious reasons. Do not want my big booty center to lose to much weight on that booty. I want DL to take a day or two to run around it!
A2: i was also fortunate enough to have SkyCoach on the sideline to look at previous plays in endzone view. When oline was off for defense i was able to talk to them and make adjustments based on what we were seeing. They could relay that to defensive players as well #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat We played a team that would move their stud all over. Pull him, run behind him. Center, guard, tackle. He was a center early in the season, but an opponent cut him every play. They didn't think that maximized his abilities. Tried to figure it out to determine tendency.
A3: I would say we did. Since we started some younger kids, our older kids were usually the next man up and that extra experience helps when injuries happen. #hogfbchat
We were fortunate this year. Had same o-line for nine games. Lost 1 starter for one game. His backup played very well was ready for the challenge! #hogfbchat
A3: The 2s didn't get as much reps as the 1s during practice but enough to be ready for whenever their number was called. Only problem was going from a senior starter to a freshman backup at certain positions. #hogfbchat
A3: Hate seeing injuries, but you have to plan for them. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Important for backups to steal reps in inside and team. Using two huddles can usually help with that. #HogFBChat
A3 had a couple times this year where we had to plug kids in due to injury. Felt pretty confident when putting them in. In exit meetings my rotation guys all said they felt good about reps, knowledge, etc #hogfbchat
A3 #hogfbchat 1/2
Felt confident every position had at least one backup ready to step in. Lots of hungry players that wanted to prove themselves. My "3rd" OLB played majority of one game & proved he could've started (if the guy he was behind wasn't such a gamechanger)
A3: fortunately my 6 and 5 had very little separation. We had one gaurd go down for two weeks and 6 played with very little change - however if we needed to find 7-8-9 it could have been realllly fun #hogfbchat
A3: This is kind of bittersweet but a lot of kids were baptized by fire early on and they also played JV so I felt better plugging them into the 5 when the injury bug was biting #hogfbchat
A3: i felt confident at guard spot but not at tackle. Got to a point that of we lost a tackle we didnt know who to use. Not a great feeling. #hogfbchat
A3: maybe not as much as I would have liked early in the season. But by mid season we were able to bounce guys around and not hinder play calls. Fast paced practice with tons of reps helped us get those guys in during practice #hogfbchat
A3: I feel like we did prepare well, but had a hard time with schemes this season and when new guys went in, missed assignments. Took it personal and had walk throughs during practice of plays. Not usually one to sacrifice scheme for tech. #hogfbchat
A3 Our C got banged up in the playoffs and missed some time, his backup was a Sophomore and struggled replacing an all state player but I expect big things for him the next two years #hogfbchat
This year was the 1st year i felt that way. Able to pull from JV as well. Both guys i pulled up mid year started the week they came up. Didn’t miss a beat. #hogfbchat
I moved my stud DLineman all over. Mostly DE to the field. Sometimes found an OLineman to win matchup. He got doubled a lot. Chipped by RB. Advice on that? We blitzed opposite him quite a bit. #hogfbchat
A3. It hit us hard after week 6. We rep the technique hard all year. I felt we were okay even when we pulled a JV kid up for week 10 we still did okay . #hogfbchat
A3: We felt comfortable through our top 7 lineman. We were put in thar scenario this year due to injuries. Our others were almost all freshman. They were Monday night players, not Friday night players. Not yet at least. #hogfbchat
A3: Yes. See A2 (substitutions). Built depth that way and prepped for all situations. @Eaglemountie1 did a great job of brainstorming ways to manufacture depth and time to work on a player's second position.
#hogfbchat
A3: Yes. I knew who would go in at each spot and felt comfortable with each. Most of our injuries this year were to our skills kids. Secondary got sketchy depth wise #hogfbchat
A3: Not this year Senior heavy and very few Juniors on squad. Sophomores are a year away and this is why season ended in first week of playoffs #hogfbchat
A3: as long as we were within the top 7 of our rotation we could function and run any play in the offense. After that there were a few times things got a bit shady by inserting DL who were limited in play execution. #hogfbchat
A3: We were very fortunate that no major starter went down. Our backups were pretty well prepared though to go in and fill If needed. Our center is a warrior and played most the season with a broken finger on his snapping hand. So he snapped with his other. #hogfbchat
A3: When injuries happen we had a next man up mentality and blessed to have it work out even found a guy we knew had potential got his opportunity and never gave it up #HogFBChat
A3 - we were incredibly lucky to not have any major injuries. As I️ said last answer only had 5 suited up for half the games. We had a RB that changed numbers that had a general idea of what to do. #hogfbchat
A3) Blessed to have a D-I DL that was my utility guy on O, so absolutely. Even if I didn’t have him, I had positional versatility without a doubt. #HogFBChat
A3 we did a great job with this. Speaks to our kids, they were always ready. Even had our TE ready to jump in. It’s a cliche, but they really had the “next guy up” attitude, even when we’d have to get creative with depth. #hogfbchat
A3: Not at first, had a G blow his knee out wk2.. we were still trying to find an identity up front, guys worked hard & became confident in guys to rotate
A3: we felt like they were as ready as they could be, we were one injury away from having 4 sophomores out there. You can’t teach Friday night game speed until you see it. We just tried our best to get them there #HOGFBCHAT
Q3: Honestly not really. Lost two RT's to injury in consecutive days. Was not confident in third option. Just plugged in our starting MLB and he was able to hold fort down until players recovered. #hogfbchat
Thankfully we did. Me and @CoachRmcD60 weren’t sure at the beginning of the year but were eventually able to have 6-7 guys we were at least somewhat comfortable having in there
A3: Our back-ups where the ones that ended up with injuries so luckily we were able to plug in new OL as the back-ups and used them if needed. #hogfbchat#mtzmade
A3) #hogfbchat based on injuries this season we were able to get a gifted freshmen some reps and 2 sophomores reps. Had some positives. Some growing pains. Overall will be beneficial for their growth for 2018
We try having 2-3 guys who are interchangeable. Really helped this year. Had lots of injuries but we were able to shuffle people around accordingly #HogFBChat
A3: We had 1 backup at C,G,T we felt would not be a huge drop off. A couple guys that could fill in multiple positions. Luckily wasn’t much of an issue up front. #hogfbchat
A3) Luckily for us we were able to get through the year with mostly no real injuries but I felt like we had a couple of guys who were ready to step up if their name was called #hogfbchat
A3. Felt pretty comfortable. Helps when you mix it up at practice. Had our "Armageddon O-Line" in practice where everyone played a position they never actually played. Helped out...especially when I lost a starting RG the day before a game!#hogfbchat
A3 #hogfbchat 2/2
At OL we had 2 ready to plug in at any time, & some very solid kids to go to after that- most of whom rotated on our DL.
Also had 2 freshman who would get PT at most schools our size that we got to keep on JV and play all game long. We'll be solid next few yrs
A3: Continued, but I can say our back up QB had to start a couple of games, very first game he started this year he went 17-19 in passes and had 4 TD’s. Athlete was just a Sophmore bright future #hogfbchat
A3: For the most part yes. There were a few times we were stretched so thin we had to force some young guys in before they were ready and without much practice #hogfbchat
A3: Absolutely. I had 4 out of 8 OL that played C at some point in JH/HS. Luckily, I only needed the swing guy to fill in late in blowouts. Next season, he slides in to the starting C spot with no problems. #hogfbchat
A3- Assignment wise, yes! Strength and experience wise, no! Tough to throw Sophs in vs some of the Bigs we see in the metro. They always surprise me, though. #hogfbchat
Knock on wood...we didn’t catch the injury bug this year. We had more depth on the OL this year than in the past. Changing our offense to the SW allowed us to give the second group more practice reps which made them ready to go if needed. #hogfbchat
A3: The biggest fear is the center going down. Always have to have a guy ready to snap. We do a pretty good job teaching everyone everything needed to hop in wherever they need to. If there's issues, we go by the "ask the guy next to you" method. #hogfbchat
A3. Have to be better at this with the Soph level. Had to tap into opposite lineman during the game that took out some really explosive plays.
#hogfbchat
A3) We only dressed about 30 kids total and started 1 freshman on the OL. Our backup interior kid was also a freshman and our backup exterior was a sophomore. They were as ready as we could make them, but inexperience was a huge issue. Should be better as 5 of 7 return #hogfbchat
A3. Yes and no. Had one extra guard and one extra tackle. Could run basic stuff but the more advanced adjustments were put on hold. Felt like we had to go back to square one every other week. #hogfbchat
A3. We felt good about inserting our back up, he had played some last year and got plenty of reps in practice. Offense was fairly simple so not a lot of thinking for him. #hogfbchat
A3: Luckily I was 8 deep, so I felt rather confident about filling in players as needed. Only issue was making sure I was on the same page as the OL coach as to who was in on O that didn't need to play both ways. #hogfbchat
A3-We had an injury bug mid season but our guys responded quickly! I love how my guys prepare themselves week in and week out. They really push each other in film and in practice the competition didn’t stop when we slated the starting line up. #hogfbchat
A3 cont. This young man played on our JV line, and held his own week 10 when injuries forced us to move him up. In a prefect would he would play H, but he played guard for his team. So much respect! #hogfbchat
No see answer to A2 was getting ready to suit the equipment manager on champ day. Had to have a pass rush specialist (undersized guard) swap jersey w/ineligible guy to sub in for an injury long enough to apply tape in champ game #hogfbchat
The unit will only be as good as their worse OL so it’s important to coach up those young guys who you may have to rely, especially at a small school #HogFBChat
A3: we spend a lot of time making sure that the guys that we think can get varsity reps are ready to roll. When we do team we shuffle guys every few plays to simulate need for subs. Our guys know what they are doing or they don’t play. #hogfbchat
A3: those guys get plenty of work in practice: Indo, Run Hull, Team that they would be ready but we were lucky to not have to extensively test that theory unless the game was we were up big #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat We should probably do a better job of having our prominently DL be ready to play OL. At least mostly ready. And vice versa. So they can have awareness of the other side of the ball, too. A DL who knows what OL does is better at DL.
A3: Had some 5’11 guys that practiced hard but couldn’t beat out my 6’5 guys. Was secretly excited when my back ups got a shot to show what I saw in Indy.
#hogfbchat
A3) Thought we did a good job with this. Always had another OL working in getting reps. We were fortunate that we didn’t have to dig deep in the depth chart though. #hogfbchat
Q3: As ready as you can be, we ended up starting 7 different dudes. But we show our backups base and blitz reps in practice. We had a freshman enter game 1 midway after our guy went down. He did a heck of a job! #hogfbchat
A3 negative. We did not do a good job offensively of having a next guy up mentality, relied too much on guys who weren’t around or could not be trusted but had a little more talent... live and you learn. #hogfbchat
A3: we had 2 that would interchange starting based on best week of practice. Another who knew what to do and where to go. Had another FR ready toward the end of season if needed. I only got a little nervous abt injury at C (only 1 sub) #hogfbchat
A3: Yes. The only difference was physical ability. We coach the hell out of the mental side and effort. Everyone gets the same Indy and small group work. Starters get most team reps. All know game plan, watch dim, etc. #hogfbchat
A3: Yes...2 huddles/2 TE during inside run, 2 or more groups of 1 on 1 pass rush...we maximize reps in practice. And we use @TAttackAcademy as an online class/resource to teach, assess, and hold our players accountable. #hogfbchat
A3: Yes, we were fortunate to have good numbers and the ability to two-platoon. Valuable ‘offense only’ time helped those guys. Had both juniors and seniors that stepped up when their name was called. #hogfbchat
A3: I’d love to say YES! 💪
Reality is sometimes the guy behind is not ready. Your job as a coach is to prepare the next man up & not put him in a position of failure. Put him in a position of success as much as you can. #hogfbchat
A2: didn’t this season, OL coach handled that. In the past, for me, you need to be injured or dead because if you come off you aren’t going back on
#hogfbchat
A3 continued: with all that said- our starter at RT for the last 9 games of the season was a sophomore C on the JV that was a sponge and learned all 5 positions, worked is butt off to prep and it paid off #hogfbchat
A3: I’d love to say YES! 💪
Reality is sometimes the guy behind is not ready. Your job as a coach is to prepare the next man up & not put him in a position of failure. Put him in a position of success as much as you can. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A. I focus on getting my 5 starters most of team reps. Depth guys get their work in Indy/Group time. If someone goes down in a game we have a swing guy to get thru the game and then coach em up next week. I'd rather have 5 with great chemistry then a bunch who are ok.
#hogfbchat A3some days I'd have the boys for over a half hour and get pissed when they wanted them back for practice😂 "none of that other crap matters!"
A4: Most of the guys learn multiple positions and you have 1 or 2 guys that are backups but know boths Tackle spots or Guard and Center. Starting guards have to be able to know both guards and rules of same side tackle! #hogfbchat
A lot of my Indy we would hit bags or dummies. Leave the contact for team periods. I found doing that kept my guys fresher throughout the season. #hogfbchat
A4: We played the best 5 we could and rested the guys when we could. Sometimes the only time the big boys came off the field was special teams. #hogfbchat
A4: make sure to talk with guys during kickoffs or punts to see what they seeing or make adjustments. If have one Guy that doesn’t go both ways, he is liaison to rest of group in huddle if I can’t talk to them. #hogfbchat
A4 - honestly it’s just the way things are here. Always have been. Our scout team on both sides of the ball was our JV. The problem is you rarely get to go against other varsity guys. #hogfbchat
A4) Maximize reps, minimize full contact in practice to an extent. It’s not easy, but you just have to maximize time without wearing the guys down. #HogFBChat
A4 We tried to keep our OL fresh by rotating a lot of guys on the D-line. Also rotating our guys around to get one a blow here and there. Many times we just had to play through fatigue with the low numbers #hogfbchat
A4: Slowed the tempo of our no-huddle. Our guys were weight room studs, so they were durable. RT was also DE. Better defensive player, but D rotated more to keep him fresh. We didn’t have that luxury. #hogfbchat
Q4 we have had to convert a tight end to tackle before, make the best and adjust based on what you’d have. Put guys around youth to vest help them out. Communicate everything like a mad man! Coach like your hairs on fire. :) #hogfbchat
A4: didn’t change a thing. First thing when I took over was bring tackling. Oklahoma still and bull moose. Get our buffet beaters knowing they are the baddest men on the planet. They bought in and we got lucky with injuries being low. #hogfbchat
Cost effective, communication, time management. I can "meet" with my guys without meeting at school. Can test kids online with video and still shots. And we can keep tabs on lower levels by teaching them the same things we do on the varsity. Game planning...a breeze. #hogfbchat
A3: Early in the season, no. We had a lot of soph’s in 2-Deep on OL so there was a lot of learning still going on. We will return all but 1 on our 2 deep though so that’s exciting. Bc of injuries lots of guys got starting experience.
#hogfbchat
A4 really tried to go into each game with a plan regarding groupings. Wanted a plan in place for every scenario. Mentioned before, got really creative in games where we knew depth would be an issue. #hogfbchat
A4: What We did that helped a lot was a constant rotation of our DL, which alleviated pressure from some of our O-Lineman. Gave them time to talk to our OL Coach. If we had a DL in a groove we let him or them roll as a unit. #hogfbchat
A4: On both sides of the football we really dumbed down what we were trying to accomplish. It was rough with kids who have never played and that were freshmen. They improved! #hogfbchat
A4. Had LB type kids playing DE and DT some helped a bunch this year. Also had some spots where guys worked in to give rest to those who were playing both ways. Tough with only 23 total dressed at times. #hogfbchat
A4: wasn’t an issue in games. Where it really hurt was practice. We started the season with 19 OLinemen, and there are some days for practice we would have 7. Just use them in practice and scout would be other kids. We two platoon so not much both sides. #hogfbchat
A4: We try to limit the schemes we run. Try and keep it simple so we can be efficient. They get double reps OL/Scout team, so we are pretty fresh. #hogfbchat
A4 any of the O guys playing both ways were subbed on Defense. We also tried to turn up practices a little bit in terms of tempo for the players to get used to the reps they would be playing. @GrizzlyBeard78#hogfbchat
A4: Actually we did have somewhat lower numbers on the OL this year. We combatted that by giving more reps to younger players than we normally would. Thankfully they were down for the cause #hogfbchat
A4: we split practice time varsity had defense time first while jv frosh had offense time with us offense coaches. Then we would flip. Had about 50 minutes each way. Not always enough time. Starters end up getting most/all the reps. Not really creating a great 2nd team #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4: simple schemes, buy into "shuffle the deck" and pride in the "plug and play" concept. Used cans, med balls, and sled to drill in place of live contact. DL coach handles subs.
A4: About midway through the season, we had 2 or 3 significant injuries on the O-line. We as a staff sat down and decided on no more 2-way guys on the line. Led to a Sophomore with bad technique, a first year Senior, and a converted WR playing on the d-line #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Our offense does a good job of having the second group run the play the varsity just ran. With the scout D, I try to give the same look they just saw. Hard to keep JV/second guys ready for whatever could come. Varsity guys care more because they have to. Had DBs ready.
A4: Go double tight and make offensive line play the cornerstone of your program. Sell your offense as a meat grinder. Culture will build numbers.
#hogfbchat
A4: 6 guys rotating along the line during team / inside. Also used those same 6 for scout team O every day. They hated it, but it made them better and also made defense better. #hogfbchat
The only special teams our Oline saw was PAT/FG. They got to use any special teams time in practice for walk through or Indy. Saved their legs! #hogfbchat
A4: We Have couple “utility” guys that know the offense well & can play any spot so that helped with not much depth. Guys rotated to stay fresh when playing both ways. Our O& D staff work well together to keep guys fresh on both sides #hogfbchat
A4: We rotated 7 OL to help keep the guys that play DL fresh then later in the season due to injuries we just had to roll with the starting 5 #hogfbchat#mtzmade
A4: cross-train guys at multiple positions. Keep concepts simple and figure out the best teaching-language to use on those concepts. If they do go both ways, I like to have primary and secondary position days with a "crossover" period built in. #hogfbchat
A4: Been very lucky, just finished my 9th year and we’ve had the luxury of being two-platoon each year. I’m curious for some of these answers, as this won’t always be the case with HS football. #hogfbchat
A3) We had to start 3 different “backups” this year because of injury, all did a very good job through the season at different positions for us. Credit goes to the “starters” ability to communicate pre snap and in the huddle #hogfbchat
A4: Try to spell them as much as possible. We can usually plug guys in a little easier to our DL then our OL. So the rotation for defense was much more frequent then offense. And not many play special teams. #HogFBChat
A4: Honestly difficult situation, had a guard and center who played nearly every meaningful snap both ways, blessed to not have any injuries but hard to get kids rest and stay competitive #hogfbchat
A4: Everybody gets quality Indy focused on footwork and technique. Good meetings and film study prepared everyone like a starter. Guys that could handle it learned multiple positions. #HogFBChat
#hogfbchat Q4. We evaluate young guys who can make the jump. We also cross-teach DL guys that we feel have the potential to help us out. Gotta always think of the worst possible scenario.
A2 - cont - In games we would give them a break every once and a while on def. We really prided ourselves on conditioning this year so we were better prepared for the lack of depth. #hogfbchat
A4) We had a guard who could play either side. That helped quite a bit cause our best guard also played DT. Had our Center only play on OL. Both DEs played just DL. Tried to keep guys as fresh as possible. #hogfbchat
A4: you have to keep it simple as possible and let them play ball. Football is already a complicated game and knowing two positions well enough to excel at both can be tough. #HogFBChat
A4: we would take our foot off the gas from a tempo stand point and/or briefly sub as well to accommodate a two way starter. Tried to constantly keep water in his hands between possession changes. #hogfbchat
I feel like anytime a name came up in meetings about this guy or that guy playing DL - I’d comment “remember he starts LG etc.” And especially when guys who just play DL need breathers in games and OL has to go in for them. Drove me nuts. #hogfbchat
A4: all of our TEs were OL this year (TEs didn't fit our scheme because hybrid players were better) so we mad the best of it. Last resort was moving a DL and give him a wrist band as a cheat sheet. #hogfbchat
A4. Heavy rotation on the DL.. even if its a skill guy like an unused TE or FB, back up LBs. Even had a back up safety down rushing at one point. #hogfbchat
A4. Was an adjustment going from a big 5A to a smaller school with reworking my Indy drills due to lower numbers. Took me a week or two to find the right mix of drills to deal with the numbers. #HOGFBCHAT
A4: Welp, you walk around the hallways and recruit every kid over 200 lbs and tell them football is fun as hell and they could really get a lot out of it. Then, when you get lucky enough to get a few of them, you make it fun as hell and a great experience! #hogfbchat
A4: All players practice both sides. We do our best to have fun imposing our will on people and Hope the kids buy in and have fun doing it also. #hogfbchat
Q4 At a school with low numbers it's always the next man up, made sure during the week the younger guys where coach up well and got lots of reps. We would only go live one day a week to help with minimizing injury's. #hogfbchat.
Late to the party
A1 we had numbers. On some weeks we would send defense to one end and offense on other for Indy and situational around 40 min then have some good on good for 30 min with offensive emphasis then 30 of good on good with defensive emphasis. #hogfbchat
A4: Not many guys so they worked hard during the week and were conditioned for the games. We also lifted twice per week to keep our team strong and stressed flexibility during the spring (track) and summer which helped keep our injuries down. #hogfbchat
A4: We crossover our younger guys to help develop depth and also so when they get on Varsity they know other positions. But once on Varsity we try to keep them in same spots #hogfbchat
A4: (cont’d) We have been fortunate to have overall smart lineman, in the classroom & on the field. Academic All-State kids have been lineman. We force our kids to know almost every position up front. If you have rules up front this can happen. #HOGFBCHAT
A4: our guys play all snaps on offense. Then we rotat which guys get a series off on defense. Guys averaged probably 3 out of 5 series on defense but played every snap on offense. It worked well for us. Sometimes hard to make in game adjustments. #hogfbchat
#flexbonehschat is live tweeting Army vs Navy this Saturday. Todd Spenser (OL Army)vs Ashley Ingram (OL Navy). Two of the best OL coaches in the country. Will be a great game. #hogfbchat
Coach Putt Stuart Cramer NC, A4: We played a freshman at shade, a first year FB player at 3 (some college will get a steal) and converted a LB to DE (He became a veer killer) #hogfbchat
A2 we have a junior heavy group and managed to get several in from week to week but mostly it was after things were in hand. Only had one guy we felt was a starter that wasn’t in. We moved him in once per half. Could have been more but wanted continuity. #hogfbchat
Post-Season Player Interviews: 100% of athletes interviewed said they learned more football and felt more confident because they used Team Attack Academy to learn our offense and learn the intricacies of their position more thoroughly. #hogfbchat

A4 We were lucky enough to have 10 full time OLine and 8 full time DLine with about 15 guys that flipped O and D each day. Shooting for 40+ HOGS next year. #goals#hogfbchat
A4 cont: How do you make it fun as hell? Up tempo practices. Fly around all over the damn place! Crank the tunes up. Be "that guy" who is super excited to be out there. Love coaching them so much that they can't help but buy in and love being at practice. #hogfbchat
A3 I don’t know that I would say talent wise we felt good but scheme wise we always did. Having smart kids helps. Keeping things simple helps. Keeping scheme consistent at each level is a must!!! #hogfbchat

Oklahoma running GT Counter here is a thing of absolute beauty.
A good tape for any O Lineman to watch. The way the whole left side of the line fires off the ball and opens the hole up is incredible. The TCU D had no chance here.
#All22Daily
Big thanks to @CoachDingus for being the best cohost around. We are still looking for official sponsors if anybody is interested in getting their name out. DM myself or @CoachDingus for details #hogfbchat
Main 5 played with 2-3 subs if I felt comfortable putting them in. Had 1 senior who could play all 6 positions if te is considered line and another that could play 4. Of the 5 ok players, 3-4 started on dline also #hogfbchat
A4 our numbers were pretty strong this season. That said, we rotate kids on Monday nights pretty even Steven at every position. This way we keep them as happy as possible. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Q4: how did you handle lower numbers along the offensive line? How did you manage your players playing both sides of the ball? #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT FlexboneHSChat: #flexbonehschat is live tweeting Army vs Navy this Saturday. Todd Spenser (OL Army)vs Ashley Ingram (OL Navy). Two of the best OL coaches in the country. Will be a great game. #hogfbchathttps://t.co/2SVglj4Uog
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: And like that, we’re done for the night! Thank you all so much for participating tonight and making our Monday’s so much fun! #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: But I can't forget the BIG NEWS! The second annual #Hogfbchat Clinic has an official date! March 10th, 2018 at RhodesFootball in Memphis, TN! Registration will be up as soon as possible but MARK YOUR CALENDARS! I hope to… https://t.co/pUvuTLs6sG
Don’t forget if you have any topics or questions you’d like discussed on the next #hogfbchat DM those to myself or @CoachDingus as well and we will get them addressed ASAP
A4: We decide where our kids play and we treat our linemen like Stars in an Exclusive Club, so despite our numbers we coach and create linemen #hogfbchat
Coaches Glad that you all interacted on the #hogfbchat tonight! Next week we will be discussing technique! Please spread the word and mark your calendars for the #hogfbchat clinic on March 10th!
Athletes/Parents pay for access. $5-6 a month...less than Netflix...less than 2 Monster Energy drinks. We also have programs that foot the bill, but when kids pay, we feel they have more skin in the game and they are more engaged and accountable. #hogfbchat
Let me@introduce@myself first... Coach Kevin Sabo. Owner/Operator of the best damn line company in IL! A4: I have one utility player that gets reps at ALL positions. Then I get kids reps at positions they are the best at! #hogfbchat
A4) Tried to make sure they were not on the field more than 4 series in a row max. 4-on, 1-off... Off, Def, Off, Def, Rest, Def, Off, Def, Off, Rest, Rinse&Repeat #hogfbchat
Splitting up kids in practice to get reps vs. Some actual competition as much as possible. As I said earlier try to rotate as much as I could defensively. #hogfbchat
Loved the veer/midline stuff you guys did - it’s tough out of WB. We tried to run it, but Q couldn’t read it. Makes it easier when you have one less to block. #hogfbchat
You're damn right they do! Other than hugging my kid in the morning when he wakes up, being on the practice field is the best part of every day from August-November. They need to know that you're having a freaking blast coaching them every day! #hogfbchat
A2. Nightmare had 3 available but not very ready and 2 were lost 2 grades, lost strongest returners week one got back week before playoffs. Lost staring center week before champ game. 2 guys in normal pos champ day was a long long day #hogfbchat
Absolutely!!! They can always feel how you are ‘feeling’. So no matter what’s going on I always try to be flying around the practice field. If I’m not running, why should they??? Lead by example!!! #hogfbchat
A3: I actually felt very confident throwing three of my back ups in the game. They knew their assignments. They just weren’t quite prepared physically. They were young dudes and were pups in the weight room #hogfbchat
A2: We started season with a backup center. Finally established a seventh guy a few games in, who became the sixth guy. Almost had to call up a couple big freshman. Short answer, as best we could.
A2: we really didn’t sub. My same OL played all game unless they were injured or screwed up and needed to be corrected. Then, once they were good to go I sent them back in. #hogfbchat
A1: we tried our best to 2 platoon. If we had to start one both ways he got plenty of breathers on the DL. We had enough guys there for a solid rotation. #hogfbchat
Please tell me your Google account email if you're interested in contributing to a small Google Team Drive for South Dakota coaches to have resources to help them grow in their careers. I'm trying to boost coaches throughout our state. Thank you very much. Share away. #hogfbchat
