A1: Tabb Middle School has a strong legacy and rich history that the community, students, and teachers are very proud of. Ts even refer to “the Tabb way”. TMS loves to give back. For example I am so proud of the fact that I currently teach where I myself went to ms. #ycsdchat
YES is special because we get to play with all kinds of Science, Math and Technology in Project Lead the Way #pltw, we believe that #ReadingIsOurSuperpower, and we have an amazing staff that has each other's backs 110%. #ycsdchat
A1: #ycsdchat School spirit! There is so much buy-in for Falcon Pride! We are the home of the Skydiving Principal, after all! It’s incredible how much the kids get into homecoming and spirit days and pep rallies!
A1: One thing that really stood out to me was how tolerant, accepting, and friendly the student body is to each other. Popular students at YHS are well liked because they go out of their ways to help people. It’s an amazing school culture of which I’m proud to be part. #ycsdchat
A1: Tabb is family. These are be people I depend on at work and often in my personal life. They are people I’ve become friends with and count on. We also have a lot of staff members with young kids, like me, and it gives a whole new meaning to family. #ycsdchat
A1: There are many opportunities for the children to interact and get to know each other through extracurricular clubs; and community events that allow the parents to get to know staff as well. #ycsdchat
A2 Art students created a paper chain with positive sentances of how they can be a great student in 2019. The chain wraps around the main hallway.#ycsdchat
A2-showing monthly appreciation to colleagues with handwritten thank you cards for things I notice they do that goes above and beyond and send birthday cards to students each month just to let them know their valued and worthy of being remembered on their special days. #ycsdchat
A2: I have positively impacted the school culture by bringing laughter to my hallway and building. I think it’s important to love what you do and have fun doing it. I am always ready to help with technology & have tried to spread the use of Twitter this year too! #ycsdchat
A2: I give random fist bumps to random students throughout the day (now I've given away my secret) but I make a point to introduce myself to students that need to see my face. #ycsdchat
A2: I try to engage in conversation with other staff members intentionally. I love having sidebar conversations in passing and offering a joke, smile, or sentiment that is needed. #ycsdchat
A2: I try and build relationships with all of my students and colleagues. If students and staff feel important, the school culture will naturally be strong. #ycsdchat
A2: as one of our building’s new instructional coaches, one of my goals this year is to improve our climate & culture. We started #observeme.I am trying to encourage andshare all the great ideas and innovations our teachers have.I like to brag about how awesome they are! #ycsdchat
A2, Pt. 2: I also love getting goofy with the students (just ask @MisterPritchett about my epic dance moves at the Stick Parade last week), offering support to all students, and saying hello to all students I see in the hallway. #ycsdchat
A2: Working in the front office, I get to positively impact the climate of the school constantly by how I interact with students, staff, and parents. I feel fortunate to be able to create such a positive atmosphere in the building #ycsdchat
A2: As a first year teacher, it’s difficult for me to see how I’ve impacted YHS because I can’t compare my time to a legacy of previous years, but I’m being the most Roxana I can be, for whatever that’s worth. #ycsdchat
A2-I also always make it a point to greet students I see during my daily travels of the halls by name as well as smile, make eye contact and acknowledge all staff that's on duty or I pass in a day. Amazing how far a smile and a hello can go--It's that I see you factor #ycsdchat
A2: As an administrator, I think it's important to be relatable. An open door policy and willingness to share "your story" enables staff to feel comfortable with you. #ycsdchat
A2: Working in the front office, I get to positively impact the climate of the school constantly by how I interact with students, staff, and parents. I feel fortunate to be able to create such a positive atmosphere in the building #ycsdchat
A2 - I try to spread happiness with a smile and a friendly greeting for my students and colleagues. I also go all out on spirit days to show my support for TMS! #ycsdchat
A3-school spirit has that trickle down effect-when Ss are given a place where they are safe to be themselves and allowed opportunity to make it their own they are more apt to show pride and take care of the school and the people that make up its community #FalconFam#ycsdchat
A3: School spirit is the epitome of "it takes a village"... It shows how supportive and engaged in learning all stakeholders are. It shows pride and helps create a safe place to take risks and reach for new goals. Low morale comes from low spirit and s's can sense that. #ycsdchat
A3: When students take pride in their school it changes everything. From the way they walk in the halls to their motivation to make to succeed. #ycsdchat
A3 #ycsdchat People were upset when we rescheduled pep rallies after cancellations due to weather, but they have a palpable effect on school culture. We had almost 100% participation in the lip dub. Students are excited for powderpuff &work hard on routines: we love our teams!
A3: “School climate appears to be a really promising factor associated with academic success, regardless of where a school is and the types of students a school serves,” said Adam Voight, lead author of the WestEd study. #ycsdchathttps://t.co/yKWhpzPZvF
A3: One word: Connection! We are sometimes reminded that it is often the events, clubs, or special teacher that motivates our students to attend school. #ycsdchat
A3 a positive and inclusive school culture helps give students a feeling that they belong and are important. This increases their motivation and engagement. #ycsdchat
A3: A school with great spirit is a fun place to be. It creates a positive culture and in turn increases student success. It doesn’t feel like work when you love it. #ycsdchat
I think its important for our students to see us being silly with our fellow co-workers. That way they can see we enjoy what we do and each other. That spirit is contagious! #ycsdchat
A4: At this point, students have settled into routines in their classes. I think we need to keep our teaching relevant to the students and vary the strategies we are using so class doesn’t become predictable and redundant. #ycsdchat
A4: Staff need to feel appreciated. As the school year carries on, stress rises, demands increase, and morality declines. When staff feel appreciated, their energy is renewed which in turn trickles into the kids who then perform better #ycsdchat
A4 Our school secretary ignites the energy every morning with her excitement in her voice. Tina gives fun facts and even makes the lunch menu sound awesome.#ycsdchat
A4: The spirit week TMS is having this week has reignited the Ss and Ts. Small things like spirit weeks and pep rallies can make a huge difference. #ycsdchat#teacherslovepajamaday
A4: It can be hard to reignite that feeling of a new school year. Especially during high-pressure times like the end of the quarter when deadlines are creeping up. For students, they need excitement and energy, so I muster that up as often as possible. #ycsdchat
A4: I think time is necessary for teachers to reenergize. They need days off, like MLK Day and more importantly, teacher work days, coming at the end of January, to catch up, collaborate, and research. #ycsdchat
A4--anything that resets expectations or redefines common goals--launch a new hashtag, introduce a new incentive to recognize and reward those promoting positive school environment. #ycsdchat
A4: Maybe have SCA and PBIS team meet monthly to plan activities that would boost school spirit. Anything we do to get students involved can help boost performance. #YCSDchat
A4 it is important as the progresses that teachers have opportunities to engage in team building activities. This is as busy time and sometimes we need to step away from our workload to have fun and breathe. This will help us be more patient with students #ycsdchat
A4: It doesn't take much to spread a little joy. I had no idea how much it would mean to them, but last year for Teacher Appreciation I made each teacher into a superhero and printed a comic page for them to hang outside their door. Lots of smiles for that surprise! #ycsdchat
A4: it’s so easy to get worn down by the end of the first semester. Students are tired. We are tired. I like the idea of having students set new goals for second quarter to give them something to work towards. #ycsdchat
A4 #ycsdchat Unlike most, I don’t like the beginning of the year. I thrive on building relationships, inspiring students,&seeing growth. I don’t need “rejuvenation,”as I’m happiest by this time in the year.Expectations are set (&exceeded), and I love that energy created by growth!
A5: Over the summer I listened to a few episodes of the podcast "School Culture By Design" by @philboyte There were a lot of great ideas shared and it really made me think about culture and spirit in our school #ycsdchat
A5: I usually turn to @iamkidpresident for help with motivation for the students and for me. @Joe_Sanfelippo has amazing ideas for igniting school culture in his #hackingleadership podcast and talks all about building culture in 30 seconds. #ycsdchat
A5: I just love this summary: “Culture is the soul of an establishment and should be treated as such. It is the essence or embodiment of all that is seen and unseen...It takes a great deal of time and energy to create and maintain a positive culture...” #ycsdchat
