Overheard during Genius Camp (https://t.co/qeGTOfp15l) today from 5th grade "teacher" - glad there are so many bird nerds in here. She was teaching them to make bird "pop-out" art. #gtchat#StuVoice
A1) Students learn & develop through curriculum integration & active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that address needs in their community. #gtchat
A1) Service-learning for gifted students can be a starting point for a differentiated curriculum enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving skills and talents. #gtchat
A2) Gifted students should be provided “curricula with strong affective & process components that complement cognitive components; helping gifted adolescents become more sensitive to community problems and needs. (Passow 1989)
#gtchat
A2) Student readiness, areas of strength/weakness, level of maturity, and Ts ability to assist the Ss in making necessary human connections w/key decision makers... (e.g. contacting state rep, testifying during legislative session, depending on the tasks etc.)#gtchat
A2) Schools need to design/implement learning opportunities within the classroom & also identify learning resources/opportunities in the community to be integrated into the classroom. (Passow 1995) #gtchat
A2) A firm grasp of the standards across content areas to ensure curricula alignment is aligned, equitable, and rigorous. This may also help Ts communicate the "why?". #gtchat

A1: Service Learning is any curricular structure that emphasizes doing for others above doing for ones self. It’s teaching students to seek out ways to make their classrooms, schools, communities, and world a better place. #gtchat
A3) “Community action, most appropriate for gifted youth, involves a high degree of service that produces a broad community impact and the highest degree of learning.” (A.W. Terry 2008) #gtchat
A3) I think the forst key to effective collaboration is promoting an environment which builds self confidence. If students are comfortable with themselves they will be much more productive in group situations. #gtchat
A4) I wonder if this would be a good op to infuse Strengthsfinder 2.0 results or perhaps a True Colors Assessment to help kids develop appreciation for those that labor among them. We often do this with adults, but not w/ Ss #gtchat
A2: so many things. Time available, costs in $ and time, immediacyof the need, level of emotional intelligence in the students (you may need extensive training in empathy or receiving praise and gratitude with humility), safety both physical and emotional. #gtchat
A3) “Implementing service-learning programs in schools for our gifted may help nurture the development of more highly moral people.” (A.W. Terry 2008) #gtchat
A3: we have to give them chances to work in collaborative groups and we must model respectful speech when working with them and with our colleagues. #gtchat
A4) Higher levels of service-learning can provide opportunities for educational experiences that help gifted children develop socially, morally, and ethically. #gtchat

A) Definitely! I’m the sponsor of a student founded 501c3 that supports equity in education. (https://t.co/dl2oiIeaR6). As the students prepare goods to sell or performances for events, they engage a bit more with others around the world! #gtchat
A4: absolutely! When your “different” neighbor rolls up his sleeves to help just as you’re doing you tend to see more similarities than differences. It reinforces that, regardless of race, origin, or beliefs we really are all one. #gtchat
A4) By working in their communities, gifted students can come to a greater understanding of how others experience life different from themselves. It provides to path towards empathy. #gtchat

A5) I believe having mentors guide them in that direction is extremely important. Many see “community service” as something to check off and make sure they have x number of hours a year. With Aphelion, we encouraged our students to use their gifts to make a difference. #gtchat
A5) I think some people understand that as a result of the measure of abilities and talents that they have been granted to experience in their lifetime...it is simply good stewardship to impact the circle within their own community #gtchat
A5: because they can 😊 and because nobody told them that they couldn’t make a difference, or maybe someone did and they decided to prove them wrong. Gifted kids are naturally sensitive to the wrong in the world. It makes sense that some choose to help. I get why (cont.)#gtchat
Some don’t though. It can be overwhelming to think you are responsible for fixing the ills of the world because you have a gift. The balance comes when we teach kids that they don’t have to save the world, even a little bit can make a big difference. #gtchat#starfishstory
A5) While using their abilities in service to others, gifted students will increase their own “self-esteem, leadership, and a sense of mission results.” (B.A. Lewis) #gtchat
#A5) the reasons are, no doubt, varied but one reason could be intellectual, motivated, and creative people can do things that do or will make a difference, creating a more positive world. #gtchat gtchat
A6) Successful service-learning will emphasize that it is an ‘open-ended’ endeavor; one which appeals to gifted students who abhor predetermined outcomes. It allows for the expression of creative solutions. #gtchat
A6) Service-learning should address real needs; be made a requirement; include student involvement; provide mentorships for students; require demonstration of a final product; and self-assessment. #gtchat
A6) Just jumping in but a powerful method is to find a local problem and have learners solve it and present to stakeholders. Work with local orgs to design projects. @PikeRoadSchools@MrsKennyPRS has some incredible examples of this! #gtchat
A6: Is suggest coming at it from a civics education approach. Rights and responsibilities of citizens...open the door to discussing what needs they see in their circles and incorporate choice and respectful discourse along the way as often as possible. #gtchat
A6) Tools to research charities, mentors to help share their stories. If interested, I have a presentation that my students have given “So Much to Give, But Where? But How?” that I could share with individuals. They gave it at TAGT twice and at SENG. #gtchat
A6) How about offering them a team of supports—signed off by a teacher, counselor, parent—and empowering them to set SMART goals and a plan for achieving them? #gtchat
A6. #gtchat starting with student interest to create passion projects is important. Also, having students evaluate their project from their consumers point of view is helpful in keeping their audience in mind.
Our next chat will be on Thursday February 8th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 9th February at 2 PM NZDT/Noon AEDT/1AM UK. Our topic will be “Ability Grouping and Self-Esteem of Gifted Students.” #gtchat
