Good evening! I'm Mike Lubelfeld, superintendent of schools @dps109 now through 6/30 and then @NSSD112 7/1 I work in Northern Suburbs of Chicago favorite ed tech resource is @Twitter Welcome to #SuptChat
Tonight's tweets are part of a Twitter Chat called SuptChat and part of my professional growth.
Nancy Wagner, Superintendent from River Trails School District 26, Mt. Prospect IL
Favorite Ed Tech Resource - Twitter! #suptchat#rtsd26learns
A1: I talk about this a lot with faculty. We have so many innovative teaching and learning going on, why not use this resource to empower others who teach right along side us? PL is everyday, constant, readily available. #suptchat
A1 We have been very excited to see results from staff directing their own professional learning to meet the needs of the students in their classrooms.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A1: Professional learning continues to evolve and change in our school systems...but I don't know that it's enough to keep up with the change of our Ss needs. We have to continue to monitor and reflect on this. #suptchat
A1: Specialty support positions now in place to support the desire to personalize learning for educators. Professional Learning vs Professional Development. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A1: Professional learning certainly has changed. I think schools are moving away from "shot-in-the-arm" type PD and committing to professional learning that takes time to implement and invest in #suptchat
A1: I’m all about building capacity from within. We have so many awesome leaders within each district let’s utilize them for authentic, ongoing, applicable PL. it doesn’t have to be formal-I conversation at the coffee machine can go a long way!! #suptchat
Hello and good evening everyone! Currently in the edtech field and taught for about 10 years in PA. Have possible aspirations of administration and wanted to learn and grow in the PLN. Thanks. #suptchat
Hello and good evening everyone! Currently in the edtech field and taught for about 10 years in PA. Have possible aspirations of administration and wanted to learn and grow in the PLN. Thanks. #suptchat
A great strategy to "keep up" with the ever-evolving needs of professional learning is personalizing PD to make sure it's relevant and meaningful. @PersonalizeDISD has a great competency system for this: https://t.co/Q7y1arIJVS#suptchat
A2: AR, VR and mixed-reality could extend and enhance learning experiences which will more deeply engage. Sts will virtually experience events that are impossible in reality #suptchat
A2 AR and VR can bring reality to the classroom. Just saw some cool educational tools from @AppleEDU that will provide students with coding experiences that really look like you are directing robots on the moon.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A2: This is allowing Ss to "see" the world in ways we couldn't previously...and giving Ss more opportunities to explore, learn and experience #suptchat
A2: Virtual reality will provide students with the opportunity to experience every corner of the world. We need to make that happen AND make sure our students can access the jobs that VR, AR, and MR will create in the future. #suptchat
A2: I think there is a window that is opening for AR and VR. If jobs are trending that way for some- so will the education and programs we are involved in. #suptchat
Katie, you bring up a great point. It starts with utilizing what great people and resources you have within your building. It’s important to share with all the amazing things they are doing as well. #suptchat
A2: I think they will continue to stretch organizations to stay cutting edge- we are still trying to launch a STEM program- one step at a time #SuptChat
A2: what a question. I have often pondered this and can't even imagine the possibilities. I feel like, when used effectively, it will open up real world opportunities that were impossible before. Think field trips, biology, robotics, etc. #suptchat
A2: Opportunities for Ss to demonstrate their understanding. Important to build their digital skills so they can demonstrate learning in environments such as @cospaces_edu! #Gaminig#suptchat#MiddieRising
A2: We are building a VR/AR course to offer students this fall. Happy to share our concept. Happy to hear your experiences in courses you may offer. #suptchat#MiddieRising
#suptchat A2: I see AR, VR & MR impacting education in different ways. I know multiple people in my PLN using it regularly to others who work in districts that aren’t ready to showcase it at all. Each district/school needs to balance their own journey with those tools.
#suptchat A1: If Ss are asked to put their learning into actionable steps such as collaboration & creativity, we need to create pathways for professional learning as well.
A2 I think that immersive environments can create paths go learning that were inconceivable just a few years ago - tech gets better every year / but still needs IMO a fab relational T to help kids connect dots #suptchat
A2: We are building a VR/AR course to offer students this fall. Happy to share our concept. Happy to hear your experiences in courses you may offer. #suptchat#MiddieRising
Andrew you bring up a great point. A question to ponder is "How might we prepare our teachers to properly be prepared to educate and support our S’s for an ever changing future?” #suptchat#designthinking
A3: Our Life-Ready Graduate (PoG) is helping us align our programs, practices and feedback loops toward this new north star! Best thing we did to communicate vision! Check it out at https://t.co/s5V6rf3OEJ#suptchat
A2: Virtual Reality allows students and staff to participate in experiences that they might not be able to participate in as a result of time and costs. For example, visit another country on the other side of the world or participate in a surgical procedure. #suptchat
beautiful opportunity for @iste and others to help bridge gap from knowledge/skill/application - coaching, mentoring, opportunities from industry into education #suptchat
Andrew you bring up a great point. A question to ponder is "How might we prepare our teachers to properly be prepared to educate and support our S’s for an ever changing future?” #suptchat#designthinking
A2: Oh my, ¡que pregunta! The possibilities are endless. Our students and innovative teachers will drive the use and implementation of AR/VR. Let's make it happen! #suptchat
A3: Our district creates unique career pathways. By providing work ready credential opportunities and robust dual credit and advanced placement courses, we are charting multiple roads to success for our students. #suptchat
Sorry jumping in late. Ben Lamp, Art Teacher in chilly WI; pursuing Ed. Leadership. Interested in new technologies and their impact on learning
#suptchat
A2: I foresee greater vertical alignment opportunity with middle school exploratory courses and high school electives that lead to careers in the STEM field. #suptchat
A3: Academic minded, resilient, problem solvers armed with the digital skills and the ability to effectively collaborate and communicate. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A3: D13 students leave with no fear of failure, the wealth of cultivated relationships that have encouraged and promoted their growth, and with great confidence #suptchat
A2. AR, VR, and XR will create the most sticky of learning environments. Students can more fully become creators as part of learning with less consumption based learning. The wow factor can increase student motivation and then turning passive learners into makers! #suptchat
#suptchat A1 Professional learning has, or should have changed by including Professioanl Learning Networks, individual virtual PD and multi-level PLC’s
A3: Been working with a number of IB Schools to connect the learner profile to desired attitudes, traits & values going beyond academic success to imply commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others & the world around them #suptchat
A3: Our district is beginning our "profile of a graduate" and we've been discussing a lot more than just academics in what it means to be future ready - empathy, collaboration, entrepreneurship, etc.
#suptchat
A3: My high school uses a Project Based Learning model. Students graduate through being evaluated on five 21st Century Skills. Knowledge & Thinking, Oral Comm., Written Comm., Collaboration, and Agency. #suptchat
#suptchat A3 More of our graduates are entering vocational post graduation programs. Grads are taking advantage of community colleges and enrolling in cetification programs.
A3: @LGMS_HCS has a great system for learner profiles that aim to build student self-awareness and allow teachers and families to holistically understand learners: https://t.co/U71Hm43EHa#suptchat
A4 Artificial intelligence will impact education. It will force us to continue to develop lessons that support our students thinking critically and creatively to do what computers can't.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A4: Once Alexa has ALL of the answers - the importance of education will fully shift away from recall of knowledge to creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. #suptchat
#suptchat A3: I believe our district truly supports the mission of “igniting passion and discovery in every student.” We continue to explore on how we can grow to support our S’s. Student First with an emphasis on SEL learning.
A4: AI will make it so everyone has the right information - the keys to the kingdom will belong to those with the skills to use that information in creative and innovative ways to solve problems and lead! #4Cs#LifeReadyEASD#suptchat
I'm beginning to wonder what is "artificial" about the intelligence ... it's impressive (sometimes intimidating) how prolific "AI" is ... automobiles, home comforts, air planes, refrigerators, and more! #suptchat
A4 Artificial intelligence will impact education. It will force us to continue to develop lessons that support our students thinking critically and creatively to do what computers can't.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
#suptchat, I had just tweeted that I convinced @PrincipalMKelly to help purchase Google home in my 8th grade classroom last year. This allows students to stick with PBL, group work, relevant problem solving, design thinking, etc and ask the Googlesphere DOK1 qs
A4: More PD with teachers will be needed about how to transform tasks and assessment to be more higher order learning. OECD PISA questions are a great start: https://t.co/1v9YWSfAyQ#suptchat
A4: Once Alexa has ALL of the answers - the importance of education will fully shift away from recall of knowledge to creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. #suptchat
A4: It will challenge our innovative minds to redefine practices. AI will allow us to create 100% student driven learning environments. #suptchat#MiddieRising
At home we have used Alexa (Amazon Echo) to "read" aloud to us (using Amazon or using Amazon and audible) - reading alongside the "artificial reader" ... powerful literacy approaches #suptchat
A4: The importance of teaching information literacy will continue to grow with the increased volume and ease of access to information that comes with AI. #suptchat
#suptchat A4 artificial intelligence will help students catapult into the technological age of learning with incredible resources. Students will transition from drill and kill activities to creative learning.
A4. AI can impact education by taking adaptive learning to the next level. Combine this with student directed pedagogy and students can overcome scaffolding or intervention barriers quicker than ever before. #suptchat
A4. Totally valid that recalling information is waning in value. But isn't the foundation of education "learning to read" which is a skill. A skill learned thru lots of practice and vocab-building to develop fluency. #suptchat
A4: Once Alexa has ALL of the answers - the importance of education will fully shift away from recall of knowledge to creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. #suptchat
A4: All students have access to the right answers quickly. Therefore, AI, is changing how we teach by allowing us to focus on the process of learning and developing deeper learning experiences. #suptchat
#suptchat A4: AI is more than just a quick reference tool to fact check. I believe the possibilities are endless. It is hard to pick a spot on where to begin. Building communication, S’s analyzing AI data responses, drive S’s to create a better AI product...
A5: We have sts complete an online course from built with Common Sense Media prior to getting device and have a great SRO and Principal who do parent trainings. Still so much more to do on this one! #Suptchat
A5: Leyden has a one-semester graduation requirement course called Digital Literacy - helping kids understand the importance of their digital footprint and become safe citizens in the digital world #suptchat
A5: We are leading efforts with our Ss through presentations and discussions, but also with our parents through a "Parents as Partners Tech Series" #suptchat
#suptchat A4: Giving Ss tools to understand, disseminate, differentiate, apply, recalibrate, and formulate in an ethical manner, I believe will always and continue to be essential skills in the learning process.
A5. The @CushmanSchool is innovating with #VR creation classes teaching students how to use new tech tools for activism and storytelling. Their local climate stories in VR were featured in @ArtWeekMA#suptchat
A4: Teachers as facilitators - asking big questions, encouraging curiosity, fostering collaboration across disciplines, facilitating healthy debate, rather than delivering as much content.
#suptchat
#suptchat A5 Using social media apps to connect with other for learning is teaching our students that there is more to social media than snapping pics!
#suptchat A5 Led a PD (PL) learning opportunity for T’s One resource I showed was this link. T’s were stunned by the idea of how long it would take an automated program to crack their passwords. Try it out: https://t.co/WrDT3nH6gJ Disclaimer: Don’t type your actual password
A4 AI can provide cognitive support potentially to learners beyond what we can imagine now but imo social emotional learning / how to learn will still be in our humanity wheelhouse #suptchat
#suptchat A student moderated Twitter chat is happening on April 19th 7 EST. Great opportunity to teach students that what they post matters! Jump in with us as students talk scholar athletes! #DEStudentVoice#delseapride
I really like this- I saw this on your website about a month ago- as a HS Supt- this would be a great document to have healthy transition discussions! #suptchat
A6: The world is smaller and closer w the improvements of technology We all live in this world, we must unite on behalf of humanity - we must live together in harmony We have much more in common #suptchat@npolyak@NESLI_AusNZ@NESLINthAmerica
A6 The Internet has made the world much smaller. Our students will interact with people from many different cultural backgrounds and they will need to find ways to understand and be understood.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A6: The fact that someone is on another physical space in the world is becoming more and more irrelevant - once every human is connected in another 5 years or so the strong cultural awareness and respect will become essential. #suptchat
A5: We are 1:1 in grades k-6. The older kids put together #digcit lessons for younger students. The presentations are interactive and engaging. #suptchat
A6: The futures of our students are not limited by borders and boundaries. The ability to culturally and linguistically #codeswitch along with developing strong soft skills will open many doors for students. #suptchat
A6: Our students need the skills and knowledge to compete globally, and (more importantly) the empathy to understand their role in the world. #suptchat
A4 I am taken with the phrase “moral imagination” which I heard in the doc “how to let go of the world ... “ and which I am reflecting upon given nation’s current frustrations w tech privacy issues as well as other areas of focus #suptchat
I love the use of older kids to work with younger ones. If I was king, this is one change I'd make. All kids should contribute from an early age. Efficient and maturing. #suptchat
A5: We are 1:1 in grades k-6. The older kids put together #digcit lessons for younger students. The presentations are interactive and engaging. #suptchat
A6: Technology has opened the world up & to succeed in this global community, Ss must have an understanding of the bigger picture - not just the borders/boundaries of their own building, state, country...#suptchat
A6: I don’t mean to make things political, but I believe we have to fight against a cultural belief that we have to beat other countries. MLK addressed this very same concept in his “Drum Major Instinct” speech. https://t.co/oip9X9LdfS#suptchat
A6: Passion...this question inspires me to think of opportunities for students to engage in passion projects on a global perspective. Anybody interested in collaboratinng on Passion courses? #suptchat#MiddieRising
A6: personal answer- for students like my youngest at San Diego State University who interviewed for a State Dept intership in Mexico City today- #suptchat
a5: I think this stresses the right angle. Everyone is a digital citizen within a school building and the best way to teach to the next generation is for all to model and support the process. #suptchat
A6: Learning with a global focus is vital for a world that's increasingly connected. With a global focus in school, students can make their focus on global learning into lifelong learning. @Lindsay_USD has some great lifelong learning standards: https://t.co/Qbjz9CYbOw#suptchat
A6: Our Ss are growing up in a world where technology is erasing traditional borders and interact with people all over the world; important to understand people from around the globe.
#suptchat
A6: Passion...this question inspires me to think of opportunities for students to engage in passion projects on a global perspective. Anybody interested in collaboratinng on Passion courses? #suptchat#MiddieRising
A6. Our students must be prepared to join a global workforce and understand the history and perspectives of everyone at the table. Effective leadership required authentic connection and communication #suptchat
A6: My daughter made friends w/ students from Greece, Spain, England, & Scotland on a trip last summer and has remained connected since. She plans to study abroad in Greece. Our Ss today are connected in ways we never even dreamed of at the same age. #suptchat
#suptchat A6 Businesses are constantly collaborating, communicating and creating with teams from across the world. We must prepare our S’s for when they will be working in that capacity someday.
A6: Passion...this question inspires me to think of opportunities for students to engage in passion projects on a global perspective. Anybody interested in collaboratinng on Passion courses? #suptchat#MiddieRising
A7: Giving control of the learning and the space to sts is key. By 12th grade sts should be primary shareholders in their learning. Admins need to model this in how they treat teachers and through shared leadership of the building and district! #suptchat
A7 I was inspired by @MarciShepard and building the district improvement plans from the student, to the classroom, to the school and to the district rather than the other direction.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A6 reading @dintersmith new book What School Could Be and honored to have #acps featured along with many many other progressive educators and learning spaces - worth the look #suptchat
#suptchat A7: allowing teachers to take a back seat, become facilitators, take risks within the curriculum, and quite honestly, make mistakes will foster an environment that is student focused. It is their classrooms, not ours.
A5: My high school is a Democracy School through the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Our student leadership team members collaborate with other foundation school members on civics activities, and implementation, fostering digital learning communities. #SuptChat
A7: We are turning our former industrial tech lab into a STEM lab- Morris students will take Math/Science in an integrated environment- the county vocational center will also offer an Engineering program- great collaboration #suptchat
A6 I also often go back into @HessEdward Humility Is the New Smart as a go to reference in considering how education outcomes will change in coming decade #suptchat
A7: As it is critical Ss to take ownership of their learning, allow them to take ownership of their learning modality by offering a variety & blend of print & digital resources #suptchat
A7: Student-centered learning is key. If students see value in their work, have voice in what they do, & pursue goals that are meaningful, the outcome is so much more positive. Cisco ISD has strategies around student goal-setting & reflection: https://t.co/gqFsHJwctQ#suptchat
#suptchat A7: In the Gov class I teach, we are having S's complete a civic action project. The purpose is to provide all of our S’s to be informed citizens on the local government process.
A7: By taking time to learn from the students you serve: they are anxious not only to show you what they've accomplished, but also to show me how I can do it too. #suptchat
A6 reading @dintersmith new book What School Could Be and honored to have #acps featured along with many many other progressive educators and learning spaces - worth the look #suptchat
#suptchat incredible chat tonight The focus of the chat is 2018 hottest topics in Ed Tech from @ISTEhttps://t.co/V0yECJ8rmQ Let's talk about that! #suptchat Q8 is coming up in a few minutes - archive will be posted soon after
A7: We have had some great experiences with design challenges - giving the authority to sts to creat a new media center and maker-space! They always exceed expectations when we provide an authentic challenge! #suptchat
Q8: Some say the jobs of the future will require knowledge of computer science and algorithmic logic - in what ways are you engaging your learners in computational thinking? #suptchat
Thanks Tamara I often go outside education space to find that which connects me to learning through a diff path - it’s an amazing documentary and worth the full watch #suptchat
A8 We are making sure all of our students get experiences coding, starting in pre-k in developmentally appropriate activities and expanding from there.
#suptchat#rtsd26learns
A8 We have STEAM/Communication Media Arts classes 6-8, STEAM K-5 and @kodable at one of our schools, we also have best library information specialists in the world in @dps109 who do other coding w/kids #suptchat
A8: From maker spaces to AP computer science (and everything in-between) - all students need to become confident problem-solvers for success in the future. #suptchat
A8: We have a massive Coding contest every year, launched during the Hour of Code that involves over 600 sts completing open ended challenges on their OWN TIME! The Expo now take 3 nights to share them all! #suptchat
Thank you so much for joining #suptchat tonight we had active tweeters from IL, OH, MO, PA, GA, VT, TN, CO, WI, MA, MS, VA, NJ, FL, and SC - and even more behind the scenes @npolyak and I say THANK YOU!
A6 embed and immerse learners in stories, movement, images, tool use, design, play, modeling, internships together and alone in caves, campfires, wateringholes of schools and community #timelesslearning#suptchat
I like this. Shared leadership provides a culture of responsibility of learning among teachers and to students. WE can all take ownership of the learning process and trust each other to work together. #suptchat
#suptchat A8: Our district is offering S’s a Tech Internship course where S’s are learning and making an impact on our district with a variety of computer science skills.
A8: Coding is a great platform to learn CS - but more so computational thinking, trial and error, resilience, risk-taking and collaboration! Focus on the process and learning more than the product with sts and they will blow you away with what they produce! #suptchat
A7: Being a school that has Project Based Learning curriculum setting, the students drive their learning in my high school. The learning environment is centered on our students. #suptchat
A8: #suptchat RIDDLES. Use a ted talk ED riddle from Youtube like this one. https://t.co/rz57IAaF4i. I played this "game" every first days of the year. Great problem solving, Computational thinking, group work, algorithmic ideas. etc.
Archive tonight’s #suptchat will be shared soon! Thank you for joining the International Chat for superintendents and eduleaders @npolyak Thank you @participatechat
