A1 - Professional Development -DIP goals should not be to get "everyone trained" in something - it should be about implementing dynamic learning #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A1: the day of ppt presentations! with @nearpod@flipgrid and classflow, it's time to leave isolated presentations alone for collaborative activites #TXed
A1 - The use of myths of education in the classroom:
1. Learning Styles
2. The Learning Pyramid
3. Left/Right Brain
4. Brain Gyms
5. Only use 10% of Brain
#txed
Q1-In order to #ShakeUpLearning we have to change some of our old practices. What are some methods that you feel are out of date or need updating in education? #TXed
A1: Howdy #txed family from Barbara in Friendswood. I think that the old behavior charts and warning books are outdated; what behavior does public shaming help to shape? And for whom? Would we as teachers like that? Ugh. Kids deserve better. #kindnessmatters
Q2-In Chapter 3, @ShakeUpLearning asked, "What skills do students need to survive in our changing economy?" Share at least three things you feel students need to overcome our world's challenges. #TXed

A1: "I photocopied this page from the book. Answer the questions in complete sentences. Good job. You get 100. Now write your answer on the board. Is everybody paying attention?" #txed
Q1-In order to #ShakeUpLearning we have to change some of our old practices. What are some methods that you feel are out of date or need updating in education? #TXed
A2: Digital and social media literacy. You can't market yourself without it, and you need to market yourself regardless of your field of interest. It's arguably more important than being an effective communicator because it's about how you engage people, not how you spell. #txed
Q2-In Chapter 3, @ShakeUpLearning asked, "What skills do students need to survive in our changing economy?" Share at least three things you feel students need to overcome our world's challenges. #TXed
#txed A2: Communication skills, questioning skills, and motivation/drive/perseverance. We have to teach students to not give up. Keep getting up, keep trying... never give up on your goal/dream
A2: Children need to be loved, regardless of the economy and the changing times. They need to learn to love and to accept love. #SEL skills are more critical now than ever before because they've lost that F2F communication. #txed
A3: We must equip, empower, and get out of their way. The fixed mindset says there's only one way to get to a solution; the growth mindset says anything is possible. Go ahead, give it your best effort, we'll be there to catch you if you fall, to help you after the fall! #txed
A3: Give them more free play! (Especially elementary) It's amazing how students will learn to problem solve when they have to work together during play. #READ5305#txed
A3 Intern-type experiences, Allowing Ss to take own path, not the "test way" to get the answer, Failing Forward, Growth Mindset, Real-World connections to learning #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A3 kids have to have a voice in order for real life issues to arise... give them choices and when something g happens that isnât according to plan, model and work alongside them to how them! #TXed
A3: I love how @loveandlogic teaches us to ask students âWhat are you going to do?â even when they come to you for help. Give them time to process and solve their own problems. #txed
A3: We need to create an environment where mistakes are valued as productive struggle so they have the confidence to try new ways without fear. #ShakeUpLearning
A3 Give students a chance whether itâs through a free choice or solving a problem independently. Be there to guide and help but not take over. #ShakeUpLearning#TXed
A2: I think they will need to know:
**where to find reliable information
**how to discern which pieces of information are the most reliable
**how to use the information they found to solve problems or create products #ShakeUpLearning
A4: Does the technology make the learning better, deeper, more efficient or take the students somewhere they couldnât have gone without it? #txed donât add tech just for tech. Only with a purpose!
A4-We need to ask what is the purpose of the tech in the lessons. No reason to use it because it is there. Technology has to have a purpose in the lessons we teach #TXed
A4 - I ask these questions:
Does the tech do something that paper/pencil cannot do?
If yes, use the tech.
Does it decrease cognition or make learning/remembering easier?
If yes, do NOT use the tech.
#txed
A4: You need to make sure it is not going to become a digital version of non-rigorous work. Technology should be a vehicle for students to collaborate/communicate in meaningful/real-world ways or create products that show their understanding/learning #ShakeUpLearning#txed
A4: In counseling, there are some amazing apps now, in particular for #mindfulness and meditation!

We also use technology to show character clips, to spark convos about core values.

Q5-Two parts:
Share some old-school ideas/assignments that still create a high engagement with your students? What are ways we can rethink these or any assignments to shake up the learning for our students? #TXed
A5 - I think these are widely considered 'old-school', but retrieval practice, spaced practice, interleaving, dual coding, the use of concrete/abstract examples have been shown to increase retention of material. Teachers should 100% be using these learning strategies. #txed

A5: there is LOADS of research behind the effectiveness of the jigsaw strategy. I blogged about a way to #shakeuplearning by using this strategy to have STUDENTS create learning playlists for each other: https://t.co/tLnvhuxR9d. #txed
A5 Read alouds are a favorite. You can still read aloud through tech and have tech enhance the read too. Differentiation can be included with tech to even the playing field too. #ShakeUpLearning#TXed
Q6-@ShakeUpLearning states, "We must do everything we can to bring education out of the past, and light it up with the power of the future." What ideas or ways can you share that might help us on this path? #TXed

#txed A5: Silent Reading has been around for a long time. However there are now so many creative ways students can respond to their reading using endless technology tools (i.e @Flipgrid ) Technology can take silent reading/response to a new level
Agreed! We canât solve all the problems or students wonât know how to approach a problem or how to take the steps to solve it. #txed#shakeuplearning
A6-We have to lose the statement, "But we have always done it this way." Believing in this keeps you in the same place on the path and will never move you forward. #TXed
A6-As educators we have to develop grit and a #GrowthMindset The world is changing and we have to change as well if we want to help our students reach their full potential. #TXed

A6: Administrators need to come from "a place of yes" (right @StephanieRDavi1 ?) and create an environment where teachers are encouraged and comfortable with trying new things to step out of their comfort zone. #ShakeUpLearning . #TXed

A5: labelling and coloring maps. This can be replaced by having the kids complete interactive maps by incorporating @ThingLink it's a great tool! #TXed
A6: My school is starting with Genius Hour in August! Iâm excited to be able to give kids the freedom to explore their passions! #ShakeUpLearning#TXed
